QUOTE OF THE

DAYyakub Memon deserves no compassion, 1993 blasts victims doIt was a Friday. As usual, Mumbai, then Bombay, was bustling with activities. But everything came to a standstill at 1.30 pm when the Bombay Stock Ex-change (BSE) was hit by a powerful explosion. It was a car bomb that went off in the basement of the BSE building. More than 50 people were killed. Many more were injured. In total, there were 13 bomb explosions in the city, leaving 257 people dead and more than 700 injured. Zaveri Bazaar, Air India building, Hotel Sea Rock, Hotel Centaur, Hotel Airport Centaur, Katha Bazaar and the passport office were all hit. After 22 years of that bloodbath in Mumbai, one of the ac-cused, Yakub Memon, was finally found guilty by the TADA court on April 29 and was sentenced to death. Last week, Memon, who is to be hanged on July 30, moved the Supreme Court and asked it to stop his ex-ecution on the ground that the death warrant issued by the lower court was illegal. The Supreme Court will hear the plea of the convict today. Earlier, a three-judge SC bench had rejected Memon’s curative petition, say-ing the grounds raised by him did not conform to the principles laid down by the apex court in 2002. The case has re-ignited a debate on capital punishment and there are many who have called the practice ‘barbaric’. Way back in 1978, Barrington Moore, an American so-ciologist, wrote a book Injustice in which he argued against capital punishment. Many here are demanding that the news of ‘hanging’ should not be publicised and the execution should be kept a secret till the job is done. But may I ask what kind of pain and anguish the families of those murdered must have gone through? What was the crime of those who were attacked? They were innocent people who had nothing to do with the demolition of the Babri masjid. The operation was fi-nanced by smugglers in Pakistan. Funds were provided by underworld kingpins. Logistics support was given by criminals in Bombay. The argument that Memon did not execute the attacks and that he did not have grenades and bombs in his hand does not hold water since he helped the planners execute the blasts. Instead of showing compassion for Memon, those who speak against his death sentence must show compassion for those who lost their own in the 1993 blasts. If Shah Rukh Khan is the aw-shucks boy-next-door Archie Andrews of Bollywood and Aamir Khan is the smarty pants Jughead, Salman Khan has built his career on be-ing the affably brawny Big Moose. Shah Rukh might occasionally let off steam about being Muslim in India or at an American airport but Salman’s Muslim identity is safely restricted to that bumper Eid release. Aamir Khan is morphing into the nation’s carefully calibrat-ed conscience keeper but Salman exists in a candy-co-loured dreamworld where the Bajrangi is also Bhaijaan who flies kites with Narendra Modi while professing his love for Congress MP Priya Dutt. He has found his happy home in what is largely an opinion-free zone.

“It is a shame that there are certain people who are opposing Yakub Memon’s hanging. Those who are opposing are traitors. Irrespective of any party affiliation whoever is opposing it is a traitor and should go to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia,”

- Arshad Alam, national secretary of the BJP’s Minority Morcha, told reporters in Kolkata.

Gold climbed above $1,100 an ounce on Monday as a weaker dollar helped it distance from its lowest level since 2010, although investors are not con-vinced that a meaningful recovery is at hand amid a looming hike in US in-terest rates. The Federal Reserve will hold a two-day meeting that ends on Wednesday at which policymakers are like-ly to send more signals pointing to a rate rise lat-er in the year as the US economy strengthens. Spot gold was up 0.4%

at $1,102.95 an ounce by 0642 GMT after falling for a fifth straight week last week, the longest run since late 2012. The dollar sagged against a basket of currencies af-ter a drop in US stocks and bond yields, making dollar-denominated bul-lion cheaper for holders of other currencies. Bul-lion lost more than 3% last week after a rout on Monday accompanied by big volume in New York and Shanghai that sparked more sell-offs and pulled the price as low as $1,077 on Friday, its cheapest since Febru-ary 2010.

Do you really think Sreesanth didn’t do any-thing?’ Asked in response to a Delhi court drop-ping all criminal charges against Sreesanth, the question was simple enough -- the answer, however, is anything but that. The key word here is ‘think’ -- not what the facts are; not what was presented in court; but what I ‘think’ is the an-swer. To my mind, per-haps the best answer is another question. Do you believe Ajay Jadeja didn’t do anything? In January 2003, Justice J K Mehra, the arbitrator appointed by the Delhi high court, set aside the five-year ban imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Ajay Jadeja for his alleged involvement in match-fixing. An inquiry commission headed by K Madhavan had earli-er endorsed the Central Bureau of Investigation report indicating Jade-ja’s involvement in the match-fixing controver-sy and that in turn, led to a five-year ban. Howev-er, after a few hearings in the high court, Jadeja agreed to take the mat-ter to arbitration and the court appointed Justice Mehra. There are few cricket re-cords which literally have lasted a century or even more. Records are bro-ken almost every game these days, but a few have passed the test of time and still stand strong. Cricket, being the game of num-bers, has been a delight for statisticians and number crunchers. In its long histo-

ry, many records have been made and many have been broken. Some records are dearer to Indian fans than others, especially when they are set by Indian crick-eters. Sunil Gavaskar’s record-breaking effort of surpassing the legendary Sir Don Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries with his career-best score of 236 not out against West Indies in Madras in De-

cember 1983, remained the stuff of historical folklore for Indian crick-et fans. It took a genius of Gavaskar’s status to surpass the record which stood for almost 35 years. Gavaskar, who went on to reset the number to 34 tons, held the record for nearly 19 years before another Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar broke it in December 2005.

la, Cuttack and Kolkata. This will be South Af-rica’s first Test series in India since early 2010, when a short two-match series was square 1-1. The two teams last met on Indian soil in ODIs during the 2011 World Cup, with South Afri-ca narrowly winning by three wickets in Nagpur. They have never played a T20I in India. South Af-rica are currently No 1 in the ICC rankings for Test teams, with India at fifth. I am delighted to confirm, together with the BCCI, the Proteas’ itinerary for our tour of India later this

year,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “This will be the longest tour that we have undertaken to India and the first time we will play a four-Test series. Both countries are now work-ing to develop this into an icon series. Another first is that we will be playing our first T20 Internation-al match against India in India. “Of note will be the second Test match to be played in Bangalore where the Castle Lager Proteas previously se-cured our only ever Test Series win over India in India in 2000.

If you read the Madhavan report as I did, specifically Jadeja’s statement (which can be found here, here and

here) -- his guilt by asso-ciation is indeed proved beyond doubt. So despite what the courts ruled, that feeling remains ever present. When a person is prosecuted for a crim-inal offence in the court, the prosecution has to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and to the complete satisfaction of the judge.

Jus-tice Gokani adjourned the hearing till August 4. SIT lawyers requested the court to conduct the matter on a daily basis. The court said it would decide on the next date.
