QUOTE OF THE

DAYIs Lalit Modi a fugitive? There is a serious crisis in the media. This has to do with presentation — sorry, shouting — of biased opinions. Consider the case of Lalit Modi as fugitive, as claimed by the Congress and most sections of the mainstream media. Indulging in a bit of hyperbole, former UPA minister Jairam Ramesh opined: “This has never happened in independent India before, where a former chief minister and leader of oppo-sition has batted for a fugitive.” Even BJP MP R.K. Singh confidently stated (and he should know, he was a former home secretary): “If anybody helps a bhagoda [fugitive], it is wrong. This is wrong legally as well as morally.” Leading journalists have joined the politicians in coming to extravagant conclusions. However, both decency and common sense require a prior question to be asked (sorry, but can you keep the stone-throwing till after you have heard the ar-gument?): What is the evidence that Lalit Modi is a fugitive? If he is, then no question that we should stone him and all who have supported him — if not, should we not stone the opinion-makers? External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj informed the Brit-ish government that the NDA government would have no objection to Lalit Modi travelling outside England; a clearance from the Indian government was deemed necessary because the UPA had denied Lalit Modi his citizenship rights of travel. Denial on what grounds? Unknown. Maybe a case of a man who knew too much. The UPA’s reason: Lalit Mo-di’s travelling outside England would “adversely af-fect bilateral relations”! Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje’s alleged crime was that she signed a letter, in 2011, in support of her family friend’s application for immigration to the UK. If Lalit Modi is not a fugitive, it is expected that friends would help him out. Even that is not necessary since the state should not be denying citizenship rights to any individual without cause. So was (is) Lalit Modi a fugitive, or is this just a figment of a fertile prime-time imagi-nation? The simple answer, from all available data, is “no”. The legal definition of a fugitive is “an in-dividual who, after having committed a criminal of-fence, leaves the jurisdiction of the court where such crime has taken place or hides within such jurisdic-tion to escape prosecution”. Hence the two prereq-uisites to being a fugitive are, one, being charged with committing a criminal offence, and, two, being unlawfully at large in order to avoid prosecution (or arrest or imprisonment). Was Lalit Modi charged with any crime? No — but three “fugitive crimes” deserve mention. First, he may have received illegal money; in this regard, he has been sent not one but 15 show-cause notices — but no proof, or judicial decision, to date. Second, one of his companies was involved in investment, loans and overvaluation of shares in Niyant Heritage Hotels, a company owned by Raje’s son, Dushyant Singh. These transactions occurred in 2008.

“If the Prime Minister is helpless in securing the resignations, he should tell people about his failure to ensure zero tolerance to corruption and offer his resignation,”

Sardaar Ji review: Diljit is a star, but where’s the story?

- Congress on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should step down if he was finding himself “helpless” in securing resignations of four women ministers who are under attack for alleged wrongdoing.

Avinash Arun’s incred-ible debut film explores unusual themes delicate-ly and expertly -- the frustration of not be-longing, the search for home, the weight of loss, the frustrations of sin-gle-parenting. After his father’s death, 11-year-

old Chinmay (played by Archit Deodhar) moves from Pune to a Konkan village with his mother (played by Amruta Sub-hash). Arriving with ach-ing grief for his lost par-ent and lost home, things takes a turn for the bet-ter when Chinmay finds a new group of friends and, after a rough inci-

dent, embarks on a jour-ney at a deserted fort. The killa is clearly a metaphor for Chinmay’s mind -- abandoned, des-olate, yet stoic in the face of a turbulent sea. The scene where he dis-covers and explores the fort is rendered in light and shadow, exquisite and unforgettable.

When a film opens with a close-up shot of a bra shop in a street market and when its first 10 minutes are dedicated to what the filmmaker thought was a joke on how women buy their undergarments in our vil-lages where they may not be aware of their sizes, you can pretty much guess what you are in for. All that crassness with no apparent connection to the narrative, in the name of creative license, is an affront to your sensibilities and that’s what Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho does to you. Without doubt, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho los-es its plot, and also its audi-ence in these first ten minutes. Come to think of it, this film leaves you bewildered, and wonder why did the Muzaffar-nagar khap panchayat (which

first announced a reward of 51 buffaloes for anyone who beheads the director and later warned theatre owners against screening the film) had to even bother giving the film unnec-essary publicity. If they had kept quiet, we wouldn’t have bothered wasting the time reviewing this film.Miss Tanak-pur Haazir Ho is about a man (Rahul Bagga) who is falsely accused by the village head (Om Puri) that he has raped a buffalo. The village head also gets the khap panchayat to pass a verdict that he must marry the buffalo, Miss Tanak-pur. Vinod Kapri, one more of those jour-nalist-turned-film-makers, claims that

The market for regional films is growing every year, driven largely by an enthusiastic overseas audience. A good chunk of this NRI market is made of Punjabis, known for their exuberance and an eagerness to keep in touch with home. This is one reason why we now see many popular singers -- from Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal to Honey Singh, Raftaar, Baadshah, and many more -- trying their luck in acting as well. Their albums and films inevitably feature foreign locations and bank upon the idea of patriotism. The same is the case with Sardaar Ji too. Diljit and Gippy escalated their game by featuring in full-length Punjabi films,

and very soon they will be making their debuts in Bollywood as well: Gippy in Second Hand Husband, and Diljit with Shahid Kapoor’s Udta Punjab. Given their stardom, it was only natural to look forward to Rohit Jugraj’s Sardaar Ji. But, is it as easy as it sounds? Let’s find out. First things first. Jugraj deserves all the credit for coming up with an interesting theme: Sardaar Ji is a ghostbuster who earns his livelihood by taming ghosts and witches (chudail) and traps them

in a bottle, more like a genie. (In case you want to cross-check Jugraj’s track record: He is the same director who made James in Hindi, and Jatt James Bond in Punjabi). So, our hero Jaggi (Diljit) is invited by a ‘vilaity’ couple (they live in London, where else) who is getting ready for their wedding in a castle. The queen is also expected to attend this high profile marriage, but there is a problem... a supernatural one. The castle is haunted by Pinky (Neeru Bajwa), a witch fondly called Pindky.

his movie is based on (and a ‘dramatised’ version, mind you) of true events. “There are

some stories which you cannot say in two columns or a half-an-hour time slot, some stories you need to tell with more de-tailing. It was about a boy who was sen-tenced five years of jail for raping a buf-falo. I got intrigued by the story and vis-ited the village in Ra-jasthan, met the boy, his family, the ac-

cusers, doctors, lawyers, veterinary doctors and interesting stories started to unfold,” he had earlier said in an interview. Star-ring Annu Kapoor, Ravi Kishen, Hrishitaa Bhatt and Om Puri in lead roles, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho is a social satire that aims to target false po-lice cases, misogyny and hypocrisy that passes off as rituals in our society. The sad part is that Kapri, who has also written the film, fails to tell the sto-ry even in this 135 min-ute-long movie. For all the satire he’s tried to pull off in this film, he only manages to use the lam-est, and the most absurd metaphors. Be it examin-ing the victim, keeping its identity secret to investi-

gation of rape cases and the arguments in a court, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho not only goofs up the metaphors everywhere, it even mocks rape sur-vivors and the trauma of innocent people be-ing framed in false cas-es. The ‘rape victim’ in the film is a buffalo and Kapri tries to weave this absurd world around this thin idea. The trouble is, while he’s at it, he also decides to throw in a bit of everything just to give the film some authentic-ity: So we have Kapri’s take on bribery to corrupt sarkari babus to even a spiel on how the wom-an is supposed to be the ‘family honour’.... You get the drift? This film is not going anywhere.

IndiGo is set to file a pro-spectus next week for a domestic stock market listing, which is expected to raise as much as $400 million, according to three sources with knowl-edge of the matter.Indi-Go, owned by hospitality and travel company Inter-Globe Enterprises, is aim-ing to win approval from the market regulator in August, before hitting the market later in the year, one of the sources said. The timing of the mar-ket debut will, however, depend on market con-ditions, the source said.

The sources declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media. In-diGo, founded in 2006, has used its low-cost model to stay profitable and become the country’s largest airline in a market enjoying strong growth in passenger numbers, but where most carriers lose money because of tough competition and high costs. IndiGo has picked Citigroup, Kotak Invest-ment Banking, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan Chase as lead managers for the listing, as well as UBS and Barclays , two of the sources said.

Telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that the government will soon come out with its re-port on the controversial issue of net neutrality, and the telecom department is waiting for the report from sectoral regulator Tele-com Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). “Report of net neutrality will be out very soon but we are wait-ing for Trai report on the issue,” telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters. The telecom de-partment, which had set up a panel to look into the net neutrality issue, submitted its report to Prasad earlier this month. Net neutrality implies equal treatment be accorded to all inter-net traffic and no priority should be given to any person or entity or com-pany based on payment,

which is seen as discrim-inatory. Apart from the six-member committee appointed in January this year by DoT, Trai had also invited stakeholders com-ments on issues such as net neutrality and regula-tion of OTT services like WhatsApp and Skype. The regulatory received over 10 lakh comments. In the meantime tenure of the then Trai chairman Ra-hul Khullar ended and the new head is yet to be ap-pointed. “Announcement (of new Trai chairman) will be made very soon,” Prasad said. Net neutrali-ty, a widely debated issue globally, has in the past few months caught India’s attention with politicians, corporate leaders and film stars taking to social me-dia sites such as Twitter and Facebook to debate on the issue.

Argentina have found goals hard to come by during the tournament and they contrived to miss chance after chance in a goalless encounter at the Estadio Sausalito, while David Ospina was in par-ticularly fine form in Co-lombia’s goal. The Arse-nal keeper’s heroics and Argentina’s profligacy meant the match was de-cided by penalty shootout and, after Colombia and Argentina missed three and two successive pen-alties respectively, Tevez held his nerve to convert his and send the Albice-leste through. Even though the sched-uled tour of the Indian team to Zimbabwe next month is yet to be offi-cially confirmed, the na-tional selectors have been told by the BCCI to pick the team in Delhi on June 29. However, no informa-tion over the availability, or otherwise, of the top players has reached the selectors thus far as spec-ulated in news reports, it was learnt. “So far no one has informed me about non-availability of any

player,” selection panel chief Sandeep Patil on being queried about the news reports. He, howev-er, confirmed that the se-lection panel is scheduled to meet next Monday in Delhi to pick the squad. News reports have indi-cated that because of the non-stop cricket schedule of a number of key play-ers over the last year or so, virtually a second-string team could be sent by giving a break to them. Normally, once being in-formed by the individual

players if they wanted to take a break, the secretary of the BCCI (in this case Anurag Thakur) who con-venes the selection panel meeting, informs the five-man committee about the fitness and availability of players for consideration. It’s not yet known whether Thakur, who is currently in Barbados, West Indies, for the annual conference of the International Crick-et Council, has been re-quested by some top play-ers to leave them out of reckoning for the tour.

The much anticipated Hockey World League (HWL) Semi-Final Pool A clash between tradi-tional rivals India and Pakistan ended in a 2-2 stalemate at the Brass-chaat Municipal Park here on Friday. Ramandeep Singh (13th and 39th) scored for world No.9 In-dia while his brace was matched by world No.10 Pakistan captain Muham-mad Imran, who convert-ed a penalty stroke and a penalty corner in the 23rd and 37th minutes respectively. India were the better team at the start with the players com-bining and coordinating well. They got the more

of the ball possession in the first quarter as Paki-stan took time to get into a rhythm. Pakistan got a great chance of going ahead as Shakeel Ammad set up Muhammad Waqas only for the latter to waste it. However, India got the crucial 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as Gurmail Singh drove the ball inside the Pakistan circle in a blis-tering speed and Raman-deep, lurking in front of the goal, made full com-mitment and threw his body to deflect the ball in. In the second quarter, Pakistan regrouped and bounced back strongly to make lethal circle pene-trations and threatening Indian goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh every time. The

best part of Pakistan was the way they managed the space in the field while it seemed India, af-ter getting the lead, were more focused on keeping their lead. Sparks flew thick and fast between the two Asian giants -- with a bitter history between the two coun-tries -- didn’t allow each other free space. Paki-stan got a penalty corner in the 23rd minute and skipper Muhammad Im-ran’s flick was saved on the goalline by Devin-dar Sunil Walmiki with a backstick, leading to a penalty stroke. Seasoned Imran stepped up to con-vert it to a goal even if Sreejesh correctly dived to his right.

Argentina should have taken the lead in the 25th minute when Pastore crossed for Ague-ro but Ospina saved the Manchester City striker’s angled shot with his legs before showing fantastic athleticism to return to his feet and keep out Lionel Messi’s point-blank head-er on the follow-up.

Who does not remember Rajesh Khanna wooing Sharmila Tagore riding in the toy train in the song ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani’ in Bollywood classic ‘Arad-hana’. The chugging steam engines of the Dar-jeeling Himalayan Rail-way (DHR) have been captivating the imagina-tion of Bollywood for de-cades. Now, the attractive toy trains and engineering marvel of DHR stations have fascinated architec-ture students from Cept University. The students recently travelled to 12 DHR stations in Siliguri, Kurseong and Darjeeling and recorded their heritage significance. Supported by

Unesco and the UK-based Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society (DHRS), their findings will lead to the publication of a mono-graph that will contribute to the conservation man-agement plan being pre-pared by Unesco. “Our students have found that 11 DHR stations between the plains of Siliguri and hills of Darjeeling en-counter a range of issues, from gradual decrease in passenger footfall to poor-ly-staffed railway person-nel. This has resulted in some stations remaining closed all the time. A lot of station rooms remain unused or unattended,” said Kamalika Bose, as-sistant professor, faculty of design, Cept.

A team of the Ahmedabad rural police’s local crime branch (LCB) caught four persons for the theft of two-wheelers and held two others for purchasing them, on Thursday. Police have recovered 18 of the 30 bikes the gang had stolen. Ac-cording to LCB officials, the police team received information about a gang involved in vehicle thefts and kept watch at Dhedhal Crossroads near Bavla on Thursday. When the team stopped a bike, the riders — Jignesh Chauhan, 25, and Anand Vaniya, 21, both residents of Bavla — did not have papers for the bike nor could they prove ownership. “Upon further questioning,

the duo confessed that the bike was stolen,” said A Y Baloch, sub-inspector of the LCB. “They named two others — Priyank Jadav, 20, and Harshad Solanki, 21, both residents of Bav-la — involved in the bike thefts. They were rounded up.” The group members confessed that over the past six months, they had stolen around 30 bikes from ar-eas such as Satellite, CTM, Naroda and Lal Darwaza in Ahmedabad city; and Dholka, Bopal and Bavla in Ahmedabad district. Police also arrested Dilip Vaghela, 21, and Irfan Ibrahim, 25, both residents of Bavla, for purchasing bikes from the gang despite knowing that they were stolen.
