QUOTE OF THE

DAYArun Jaitley is the Manmohan Singh of the BJP...?

In many ways, Arun Jaitley is the Manmohan Singh of the BJP. Like Singh, he was a successful and much-admired professional before he became a member of Parliament and Union minister. Like Singh, he has a calm demeanour, and friends across the political spectrum. Like Singh, he sees the Rajya Sabha as his natural parliamentary home — like him again, he was once persuaded to fight a Lok Sabha election and lost, confirming the aptness of his own preferred choice. Finally, like Singh, Jaitley has a reputation for honesty and probity. These compar-isons are strengthened by the recent controversies that Jaitley has found himself in. In the 10 years that he was prime minister, Manmohan Singh retained his individual reputation for integrity. No one could accuse him of having diverted a single paisa of pub-lic funds for personal use. However, all around him, nepotism and cronyism flourished. In 2011-12, as the corruption scandals gathered force, the PM came increasingly under the scanner, not because he was personally involved, but because he was head of a cabinet some of whose members were seen as hav-ing a hand in the till. It has been claimed that the UPA government of 2004-14 was the most corrupt in the history of independent India. And it is widely known in cricketing circles that, even when judged by the lamentably poor standards of our sporting bodies in general, the Delhi and District Cricket As-sociation has been deeply mired in cronyism, nepo-tism and corruption. It is among the worst managed cricket associations in India. No evidence has thus far emerged that, in his long tenure as DDCA pres-ident, Jaitley financially benefited from the various scams the association is now accused of. Yet all around him, men in the DDCA were on the make, on the take. If Singh could not escape culpability or re-sponsibility for the misdeeds of A. Raja, S. Kalmadi, et al, can Jaitley entirely escape culpability or respon-sibility for those charged with allowing these reported instances of malfeasance in the DDCA? If the buck for the misdeeds of Union ministers stops with the PM, surely the buck for the misdeeds of the DDCA’s officials stops with the DDCA president? The cam-paign against corruption in the DDCA has been led by the now-suspended BJP MP, Kirti Azad. The DDCA is a private body, not an arm of the government. The oversight or complicity he is charged with happened under his watch as DDCA president, not as finance minister. That said, as with Singh and 2G/ 3G/ CWG, Jaitley’s reputation will never be the same again.

“BJP almost begging me for an apology. Sorry. I won’t oblige them. Let Jaitley ji be cross-examined in defamation cases. Let truth prevail,” - Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal hit back at the BJP on Monday over the party’s demand that he apologise after the probe panel did not name Arun Jaitley in its 237-page report on the alleged irregularities in the DDCA.

Actor Farhan Akhtar, who will be seen as investiga-tive officer in “Wazir”, says the movie is a heart-warming emotional dra-ma rather than the thriller people think it is going to be. “There is little bit of the thriller aspect in the film because there is an investigation in the mov-ie. But if you ask me, this movie is all about emo-tional drama,” Farhan said in an interview here. “The emotional thrust of this film is the most ef-fective thing and that is something which will re-

main with you. There is a love story and drama of two friends that is some-thing you’ll remember about this film once you watch it,” added the ac-tor, who stars in the mov-ie with veteran star Ami-tabh Bachchan. “Wazir”, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Bejoy Nambiar, also fea-tures Aditi Rao Hydari and Neil Nitin Mukesh. The film tells the story of two unusual friends — one a paralysed chess grandmaster and another a grief-stricken ATS of-ficer — brought together by a peculiar twist of fate.

Actress Priyanka Chopra chose to stay mum on speculations that she has been approached for a pro-posed biopic on Kalpana Chawla, an Indian-Amer-ican astronaut. “There are bunch of films that have been offered to me, I can’t commit which one I am doing. There are few real-ly amazing scripts. I have a lot of choices, but not much time,” Priyanka said when asked if she would be part of the Kalpana Chawla biopic. It acknowledged the grow-ing market share of Indi-an films and its leading actors. Forbes began its article with this line: Am-itabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar–never heard of them? They earned more than

Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Johnny Depp, all with-out being US household names. Here the keywords were ‘without being US household names’. It is in-deed the case with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, not so much with Amitabh Bachchan though. Salman and Akshay are part of an industry that has struck a balance with the outside advertising world.

Japan’s Toshiba Corp may need to curb its ambi-tions in nuclear power even as it looks set to win a deal in India, battling both competition from emerging market rivals and the impact of its own deteriorating finances, industry experts said. A se-nior Indian government official told Reuters ear-lier this month that the country expects to seal a contract with Toshiba’s U.S. nuclear unit Westing-house to build six nuclear reactors in the first half of next year. The deal, estimated to be worth as much as $2 billion per reactor, is a blessing for Toshiba as the laptop-to-nuclear conglomerate overhauls its loss-making consumer electronics division in the wake of a $1.3 billion book-keeping scandal. Yet industry experts say it is far from securing its goal of building 64 reactors over the next 15 years - an ambitious plan announced in November and even more bullish than its outlook before the 2011 Fukushima disaster that spurred a nuclear phase-

out among developed nations such as Germany.

Reliance Jio finally launched its next generation 4G services on Sunday, albeit only for its employees, after postponing the network services launch across the country for a while. Jio, which will be rolled out for consumers in March 2016, will use a technology called VoLTE or voice over LTE (long-term evolu-tion) that offers faster internet speeds and better voice quality on calls among other things. However, Jio will be launched along with an array of services and its brand of smartphones called ‘Lyf’ in an attempt to build an Apple-like ecosystem around its services. Jio Infocomm is in possession of 2300 Mhz spectrum across the country, 800 Mhz spectrum in 10 circles and 1800 MHz spectrum in six circles. The compa-ny has made a total investment of Rs. 34,000 crores. Jio’s network is currently present in 29 states of India and also covers 18,000 towns and cities across the nation. The company aims to cover 80% of India’s population by the year-end and plans to have com-plete national coverage within the next 3 years.

Martin Guptill flirted with a world record then had to settle for a New Zealand one as he demolished Sri Lanka’s bowling to guide his side to a comprehen-sive 10-wicket victory in the second one-day inter-national in Christchurch on Monday. Guptill, who had moved to 46 off 13 balls, had AB de Villiers’ record of 16 balls for a half-century in his sights before two yorkers from Nuwan Kulasekara end-ed the bid. He brought up his 50 off 17 balls, with five boundaries and four sixes, as New Zea-land chased down Sri Lanka’s 117 off just 8.2 overs. Eyeing their second title win in the tournament, a confident Delhi will take on a spirited Gujarat in the day-night ODI cricket final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at the Chinnas-wamy Stadium, here on Monday. If Delhi, who won their only Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2012-13, have banked on their bowlers all this while then bowling all-round-er Axar Patel has given Gujarat the much-needed impetus in crunch times. For Delhi, Shikhar Dha-wan, who was unable to muster enough runs in the recently-conclud-ed South Africa tour and

also in this tournament, will be determined to make a statement before embarking on India’s tour to Australia, especially against the most success-ful bowler Axar, who has taken 19 wickets in the season. Captain Gautam Gambhir will be heart-ened by his bowling at-tack led by Ishant Shar-ma and Pawan Negi, but he knows that individ-ual brilliances apart his batsmen have been far from consistent. Unmukt Chand’s unbeaten 80 in the semi-final against Hi-machal Pradesh brought welcome cheers for the Delhi team before the summit clash. Dhawan,

Gambhir, Chand and Ishant will be the play-ers on whom Delhi will banking on to see off the Parthiv Patel-led Guja-rat. Gambhir’s side will go into the match with an advantage of having played their quarter-fi-nal and semis matches at this venue, unlike Guja-rat who played their pre-vious matches at Alur, better-known as a batting wicket. Gujarat may find it difficult to adjust to these conditions because of the two-paced movement of the track as some balls are keeping low and some others scooting off the deck, which makes batting that much difficult.

Australia amassed a for-midable 459-run lead over the West Indies and were heading for a series vic-tory with two days left in the second Test in Mel-bourne on Monday. After dismissing the outgunned tourists for 271 and a 280-run first innings lead, skipper Steve Smith did not enforce the follow-on, preferring to recharge his bowlers and bat a sec-ond time. By close on the third day, Smith had led the Australians to 179 for three with his virtuoso un-beaten knock of 70 off 70 balls with the under-used Mitchell Marsh, elevated to fifth in the order, chip-ping in with 18. The Aus-

tralians have been far su-perior and seemed intent on constructing a huge overall lead and bowling out the Caribbean visitors for a fourth time in the one-sided series. Australia crushed West Indies by an innings and 212 runs in the first Test in Hobart and have lost only 10 wickets for 1,313 runs in three in-complete innings. Smith had Sunday’s third Test in Sydney and the extra bowling workload in mind when he decided not to put the West Indies back in to bat. The Australians went about chasing quick runs and lost wickets along the way. Both openers were gone by the 11th over as the West Indies bowlers

enjoyed their best spells of the series. Skipper Jason Holder, sharing the new ball with Jerome Taylor, had first-innings centuri-on Joe Burns caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at sec-ond slip for four. Debutant Carlos Brathwaite fol-lowed up with the prized wicket of David Warner. Warner attempted to steer a lifter behind the wicket only to be well caught by Holder in the gully to miss out again with 17 follow-ing his 23 in the first dig. First-innings centurion Us-man Khawaja played some improvised shotmaking for his breezy 56 off 61 balls before he was caught be-hind attempting to paddle Holder behind the wicket.

India’s top singles player Yuki Bhambri on Sunday withdrew from the Chen-nai Open as he is yet to recover from his elbow injury. Yuki had enjoyed a lot of success in the season 2015 as he broke into top-100, winning two Challenger level sin-gles titles. After winning the Pune Challenger, he was forced to withdraw from his last event of the 2015 season due to

the same injury. He had about six weeks to re-cover but could not and was advised more rest by his Delhi-based doc-tor. “I have been training and exercising all these weeks but I have not started hitting. My physi-cian has asked me to rest for one week so I had no option but to pull out of the Chennai Open. I have played in Chennai in all theses years and was to play main draw for first

time. I did not want to miss this but things are like this only,” Yuki said. Yuki, who is ranked 93, hopes to be in good shape before the Austra-lian Open, the first Grand Slam of the 2016 season. It was a good chance for Yuki to play in a quality field that has two-time and defending champion and world no. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka, world no. 12 Kevin Anderson and 19th ranked Benoit Paire.

ute) and skipper Sunil Ch-hetri (68′) found the target for India. However, India were in for a shock when Nepal took the lead as ear-ly as in the third minute of the match through Bi-mal Magar’s strike. Con-trary to the result, it was Nepal which started on a positive note as Magar handed his side the lead in the third minute. Ro-hit Chand’s ball forward saw Nawayug Shrestha

get beyond Augustin Fernandes. Shrestha’s shot comes off the far post and lands in front of Magar who slotted the rebound into an empty net to stun the Indians. In the 14th minute Magar had a another shot on target but a feeble one. In the first 16 minutes, Nepal were the dominant side on display as they had four shots on target against none by India.

fore umpire Richard Il-lingworth mentioned it. “Richard Illingworth said something like I was get-ting close with a couple of balls to go and then I got a couple of yorkers in there,” Guptill said in a televised interview. “I am pretty happy with the way things are going (but) I’ll take a 90 not out and the win rather than the fastest 50 and getting out.” Guptill ended 93 not out, from 30 balls, while

Tom Latham was on 17 as the hosts finished on 118 without loss to achieve victory before the sched-uled lunch break. It was the second successive heavy defeat for the vis-itors at Hagley Oval, af-ter they were bowled out for 188 in the first game on Saturday, with Gup-till and captain Brendon McCullum putting on a century stand in 10 overs to set up the seven-wicket victory.

Wind turbine maker, the Suzlon group today said its S97-HT DFIG 2.1-MW wind turbine has achieved a 35 percent plant load factor over the last 12 months since its launch in November 2014. The pro-totype was commissioned on June 9, 2014, at Nani Ber district of Kutch, Gu-jarat, the company said in a release. The wind turbine has received “encouraging response” from custom-ers across segments and reflects in the 350 MW of orders received. “By offer-ing a product that can opti-mise and harness wind re-sources at higher altitudes, Suzlon has proved that even low-wind sites can be made attractive. Con-sistently achieving and maintaining 35 percent PLF will help in reducing

the levelised cost of en-ergy,” said Suzlon Group Chairman Tulsi Tanti in the statement. The S97-HT DFIG is the world’s tallest all-steel hybrid tower -- with a height of 120 metres -- the design of which combines both lat-tice and tubular structures designed indigenously to harness the enhanced availability of wind re-sources at higher altitudes, making low wind sites vi-able. It increases energy output by 12-15 percent over other turbines of same capacity at a height of 90 metres. The combination of lattice and tubular gives enhanced tower strength at a lower cost. The three-di-mensional lattice struc-ture can support heavier weights due to the broad base and reduces the steel requirement, apart from being logistic-friendly.
