QUOTE OF THE

DAYStop killing people in the name of Islam: is Islam the

religion of peace..?“Stop killing people in the name of Islam”, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday as she vowed to do everything to eliminate terrorists from the country after 20 foreigners were killed in an attack on a cafe in Bangladesh claimed by the Islamic State ter-ror group. Announcing a two-day state mourning for those killed in the worst terror attack in the country, Hasina asked all, including the general public, to get united to resist a “handful of terrorists”. Bangladesh endured its own Mumbai-like suicide attack over the weekend when heavily armed terrorists targeted a bak-ery frequented by foreigners and took them hostage before being were gunned down by security forces. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility; whether or not the group that has ravaged Syria and Iraq was involved in the Dhaka attack will be established in the days to come but this conscious targeting of foreigners appears geared to exacerbate the conflict between the State establishment and extremist forces that have long waged a bitter and bloody battle. The Sheikh Hasina government’s counterterrorism policies will be under a lot more international pressure following this attack. That sort of scrutiny does occasionally helps as with the case of the Lashkar-e-Toiba after the Mumbai at-tacks, when the Pakistani establishment was forced to rein in the violence of the group if not its infrastructure. Ms Hasina’s government unfortunately has nowhere that kind of leverage as a range of Islamist groups have been relentlessly challenging the authority of her gov-ernment, and have, over the last year, launched several brutal, often unspeakably violent attacks on bloggers, atheist activists, publishers, Hindus, Shias and foreign-ers. Extremism and terrorism have proved almost im-possible to tackle in Bangladesh as they themselves are a product of the deep dysfunction in the country’s poli-tics and State institutions. Ms Hasina’s Awami League party and government is both a product and a driver of that dysfunction. Created via a bloody civil war in 1971, Bangladesh has a very violent political culture and a gridlocked politics dominated by two warring parties and, as pointed by the International Crisis Group (ICG), it has extremely partisan State structures where-by institutions like the civil service, police and judicia-ry are manned or manipulated by party faithful. Hasi-na’s government is opposed to violent Islamists but it has also presided over widespread repression of oppo-sition parties like Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami. This and the partisan nature of the criminal justice system has bred alienation and enhanced the appeal of extremist organisations and terror groups. Furthermore, as a politically-freight-ed bureaucracy is too invested in the continuation of a regime and prone to overreach, the Hasina gov-ernment has also cracked down on the media and sections of the civil society, further undermining its legitimacy. Bangladesh is experiencing a crisis of public institutions of which terrorism is one mani-festation. The focus now will be on finding the con-spirators but the country desperately needs a new form of politics and a sequence of steps that will manage social tensions. Right now that sounds like wishful thinking.

‘Generalising and blaming’ the entire Muslim community, especially at times when several suspected terrorists have been arrested by the NIA, ‘should not happen’, I will continue to condemn ISIS, it is a terrorist organisation. This is everyone’s stand in the community,” - Condemning the acts of the extremist Islamic groups such

Actor Varun Dhawan has claimed that his up-coming action-drama Dishoom features Bolly-wood’s most expensive chase sequence ever. The film, also starring John Abraham and Jacque-line Fernandez, assures a lot of adrenaline-pump-ing action scenes, out of which its helicopter chase sequence is said to be the most expensive and the longest in the history of Bollywood. SRK and Salman’s bond hit a rough patch at one point of time, but all seems well now. They have shared the frame in films like Karan Ar-jun, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Horror comedy is the new Sambar in Tam-il cinema. It’s present everywhere. There’s at least one horror comedy running in the theatres all year round. And, Sundar C. and Raghava Law-rence, have their own ‘Aranmanais’ and ‘Kan-chanas’ that keep com-ing with the sole purpose of damaging our brain. Yes, some horror films are lovely and some comedies are a delight. When the two genres are combined, they make a great pair. But the mak-

Jackson Durai stars father – son duo Sathyaraj and Sibi along with the regular comedy guys Karuna-karan, Rajendran, and Yogi Babu. drags on till 158 minutes, mostly filled with adul-terated jokes. Though the movie is certified U/A, which requires parental guidance for minor audi-ence, the so called com-edy (double meaning) is purely tasteless even for a sensible adult to even laugh at them. The only relief is the presence of talented actress Radhika Pandit, and surprisingly

senior actor and director Kashinath who is usually accused for his trademark double meaning dialogues in his films. Lifting the plot straightway from the 55-year-old Hollywood classic, the story revolves around two advertising executives working in ri-val companies, and their escapades which follow for more than two-and-a-half hour.

SBI secures $625 mn from World Bank for solar programme

Small cities in India to benefit from air travel boom

Reserve Bank of India should also be audited, says CAG chief

State Bank of India has inked agreements with the World Bank for a $625 million (around Rs 4,200 crore) facility to support grid connected rooftop solar programme in the country. This will help SBI in financing grid connected rooftop solar photo-voltaic (GRPV) projects at very competitive rates, the country’s largest lender said in a statement today. “This in turn will catalyse the market and support the government to faster achieve its target to generate 40 GW of electricity from widespread installation of rooftop solar photo-voltaic panels,” it said. The eligible beneficiaries under the facility would be developers, aggregators and end-users, who wish to set up solar PV projects mainly on commercial, industrial and institutional rooftops. Through this initiative, at least 400 MW solar ca-

pacity will be created across the country.

Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Shashi Kant Sharma suggested that the Reserve Bank of In-dia also be audited. Currently, the RBI is not audited by CAG, but by auditors appointed by the Centre, Kant said at an Assocham event in Delhi. Sharma said that in light of the rising number of instances of financial fraud, the audit should examine the fi-nancial sector’s risks and vulnerabilities, and regu-lators’ abilities to mitigate such cases. He also added that in a country that is largely financially illiterate, the possibility of fraud was much higher. “The emerging international trend of the oversight of the regulators, in order to provide a higher level of as-surance, is an interesting development that must be watched to inform our own system of oversight and assurance,” he said. Sharma said there needed to be a “comprehensive strategy” to deal with fraud com-mitted against banks, and that regulators needed to work together to improve the capacity to deal with

such cases.

India will push to get 90 new airports up and run-ning over the next 12 months, under a government plan to service smaller cities that have missed out on the country’s air travel boom, officials said on Fri-day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to accel-erate growth in the world’s fastest expanding avia-tion market while encouraging airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet and Jet Airways to fly more people to and from smaller, often poorer cities. Scores of new air-ports have been built around the country but many are yet to open because airlines do not see sufficient demand as ticket prices are too high for the majority Indians. That has raised worries the government is building infrastructure few can afford to use. Civil aviation ministry officials, however, said on Friday that the government has identified 30 recently built airports, and another 60 nearing completion, that it

says it can get airlines to start flying to soon.

Usain Bolt’s Rio Olympics participation in doubt as he injures hamstring

Usain Bolt’s Olympic quest is in doubt, after the sprint superstar left his country’s national championships with a hamstring injury shortly before he was going to run the 100-meter final. And that was just one part of a bizarre night at National Stadium. Bolt’s longtime rival Yohan Blake won the 100 title and formally qualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olym-pics — but only after a false-start disqualifica-tion call against him was overturned after review. But even after Blake re-grouped and prevailed, all the buzz was about Bolt and his status going forward especially since the national meet serves as the Jamaican Olympic trials. He’s not out of the Rio Games, but his status hinges now on how he

Gareth Bale’s dream of winning Euro 2016 with Wales remains very much alive after he and his teammates dug deep to send Belgium packing in remarkable fashion in Fri-day’s quarter-final. Wales recovered from Radja Nainggolan’s missile-like opener in the 13th minute to win 3-1 in Lille but it was unsung captain Ash-ley Williams, striker Hal

World number one and defending champion No-vak Djokovic was facing Wimbledon humiliation on Friday before rain saved him from his worst defeat at the tournament since 2008. Three-time winner Djokovic, who is halfway to the first cal-endar Grand Slam in 47 years, dropped the first two sets of his third round clash against American 28th seed Sam Querrey

7-6 (8/6), 6-1. But after just 73 minutes of action, rain sent the pair running for cover off Court One, giving 12-time major win-ner Djokovic welcome sanctuary before play was called off for the day. By the end of Friday, which had seen just three hours of action on outside courts, only 15 of the scheduled 32 ties had been complet-ed. That led organisers to decide that for the first time since 2004, and only the third time in history,

play will take place on the middle Sunday Djokovic, who has an 8-1 record over Querrey, has made at least the quarterfinals on his last seven visits to Wimbledon since losing to Marat Safin in the second round eight years ago. In contrast, sev-en-time champion Roger Federer had the advantage of playing under the Cen-tre Court roof and became the first man in the fourth round thanks to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Britain’s Daniel Evans.

Australian swim-mer Cate Camp-bell has broken the 100-meter free-style world record at the Brisbane Grand Prix. For-mer world cham-pion Campbell clocked 52.06 sec-onds on Saturday, eclipsing German Britta Steffen’s previous mark of 52.07 at the 2009 world championships. It came during Campbell’s final competi-tion before the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Campbell says “it happened when I least expected it ... people have been asking me when am I going to break a world record for the last three years. Now they will stop asking me the question.” “We present your new new world record holder in the 100 free,” tweeted the Australian Swim Team, confirming the 52.06 second swim which eclipsed German Britta Steffen’s old mark of 52.07 set in 2009.

Bolt said he was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring tear — the most mild sort — and that the discomfort began presenting itself in his quarterfinal race on Thursday night. “I have submitted a medical ex-emption to be excused from the 100m final and the remainder of the Na-tional Championships,” Bolt said in a statement released through Jamai-can officials. “I will seek treatment immediately and hope to show fitness at the London Anniver-sary Games on July 22 to earn selection for the

Olympic Games in Rio.” Blake, who finished sec-ond to Bolt at the London Games in the 100, said he was confident that the world-record-holder will be in Rio. “No doubt, no doubt, no doubt,” Blake said. “It’s just a caution measure. He’s good. Just being cautious.” Blake won the 100 final in 9.95 seconds, 0.01 ahead of Nickel Ashmeade. Je-vaughn Minzie got third in 10.02 seconds, which figures to send him to Rio — though his role could depend on how Bolt’s hamstring recovers. “I’m just smiling,” Minzie said.

With his par-ents watching, Bale had an influence on proceed-ings but such a spectacu-lar victory owed more to a huge collective effort. Wales did not reach the quarter-finals by being a one-man team, but they could not have made it this far without Bale.
