QUOTE OF THE

DAYRemembering APJ Abdul Kalam, the problem-solver

My association with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam began in 1967 when I joined the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station, Thiruvananthapuram. Through the years, he had been my guide and mentor. I learned about the technology behind rockets and project man-agement from him. We worked together for nearly 20 years — first at Thumba and later on the satellite launch vehicle (SLV-3) project. I owe all my achieve-ments to this great personality. Kalam was a real task-master and used to set impossible targets. At the same time, he used to be our motivator and facilitator. He used to check that we were on the right track and if any mistakes occurred, he would help us analyse and resolve the issues. He saw to it that we achieved suc-cess in the shortest possible time. Kalam never blamed anyone for a mistake or failure. He used to encourage people to put in their best. One of his biggest con-tributions was seeing through the successful progress of the SLV 3 programme in the 1970s. When we got into the SLV programme, we had only been launching small rockets that would go to an altitude of 10 km. Kalam envisioned launching a huge 20-tonne rocket with a spacecraft that would orbit the earth. We had no hope of getting this technology from outside. It was Kalam’s leadership that enabled this to happen. The basic technologies in a rocket system are com-plex and elements are integrated into future missions. The technology for the rocket, control system, naviga-tion system, etc that were developed during the SLV 3 time have formed the foundation for Isro’s PSLV and GSLV systems. One of the remarkable things about Kalam was his intuitive decision-making. He had a knack for spotting trouble well in advance. We en-countered many failures in the SLV programme and he always used to say that failure is the stepping stone to success. Today, Isro’s project management system stands out as one of the most purposeful in the world because of his efforts. After leaving the space pro-gramme, he took up the challenge of providing a mis-sile shield for the country. Prithvi, Agni, Akash, etc are his brainchildren. Later on, he worked on weap-ons systems. When the weapons system was realised, I asked him why we were developing it and he said that only strength can draw the respect of others. He looked at the entire thing as a deterrent. I will not clas-sify Kalam as a pure scientist. He was not the kind of person to write a thesis or solve equations and things like that. But he knew the critical issues in develop-ment programmes, whom to tap — a senior scientist, technician or professor. He had high respect for the professors and teaching staff at our leading science institutions and always used to tap their wisdom. He was able to synthesise the knowledge of hundreds of people to solve a single problem. There is practically no other person who has successfully completed so many missions in such a short time.

“A.P.J. Abdul Kalam backed the nuclear deal India inked with the United States in 2005 and it is a “total canard” that the then president (Kalam) was reluctant to appoint Sonia Gandhi as the prime minister”

- Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said.

Gold prices in India may even dip to Rs 20,500 per 10 grams, a level last seen about 5 years ago, in case of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve lat-er this year, according to India Ratings and Re-search.Maintaining the negative outlook on gold prices for the current fis-cal year (2015-16), the rating agency said do-mestic rates may decline and range between Rs 20,500 and Rs 24,000 per 10 grams if the US cen-tral bank hikes interest rates, as widely expected. It also added global pric-es of the precious metal could drop and stay in the range of $900-1,050 per ounce.“Till such time the uncertainty around glob-al growth is reduced, the chances of international gold prices falling below

$900 ounce correspond-ing to pre-2009 levels are remote,” India Rat-ings said. The prices of gold, which is considered a hedge against an eco-nomic uncertainty, may weaken with the expec-tation of an increase in the US real interest rates. “US real interest rates and gold prices have also more or less remained negatively correlated, similarly gold prices and the dollar index histori-cally have a negative cor-relation, but there have been occasional bouts of a positive correlation for a short term,” it further said. On demand side, the rating agency said China and India form close to half of the total world de-mand for gold and they have been maintaining their pace of purchases around the 2011-2012 levels.

The visitors say they will relish the challenge. It was amidst inquisitive stares and sudden bursts of ‘clicking’ generated by the shutterbugs that he ar-rived at the practice ses-sion, his gait confident, unaffected by the awk-wardness that self-con-sciousness imparts. Un-wittingly, Virat Kohli had made himself the focal point of hype ahead of the second unofficial Test between India ‘A’ and Australia ‘A’. If any-thing, the announcement that he would feature in the game, beginning on Wednesday, to gear up for next month’s tour of Sri Lanka has only ac-centuated the sense that the current series is be-ing viewed as little more than a dress rehearsal. And bowling coach Paras Mhambrey did not say anything to change this perception. Asked about

Alastair Cook came into the third Ashes Test des-perate to avoid another 3-30 start. Presumably that did not extend to inflicting it on the oppo-sition, as they did on the opening morning at Edg-baston. David Warner, Steve Smith and, most concerningly for the Aus-tralian hierarchy, captain Michael Clarke were all back in the pavillion with-in the first hour as Jimmy Anderson regained his new-ball aura and Steve Finn gave an emphatic early endorsement of the

decision to pick him for the first time in two years. The captain’s departure for 10, having been com-prehensively bowled by a Finn yorker, extended his barren run of form. In his 15 innings since his courageous 161 not out in Cape Town in March last year, when he withstood a fractured shoulder caused by a buffeting from South Africa’s Morne Morkel, he as only once reached 50: in last summer’s Adelaide Test, when he made 128 in his first in-nings since the death of Phillip Hughes. If Clarke does not score at least 48

before his next dismissal his average will fall be-low 50 for the first time since Australia’s April 2012 tour of the West In-dies. Because of the poor start Australia were given more cause to be grateful Chris Rogers recovered sufficiently from his head blow at Lord’s to retain his place at the top of the order. But even he was not immune to the threat posed by England’s bowl-ers. He almost nicked the first ball of the match, and later cut a Stuart Broad delivery just out of reach of Ben Stokes at back-ward point.

The BCCI on Wednesday made it very clear that it was not having second thoughts on revoking the ban on former India pac-er S Sreesanth, Mumbai spinner Ankeet Chavan, and Rajasthan off-spin-ner in the wake of a Del-hi Court dropping all charges against them in the IPL 2013 spot-fixing case. All the 36 accused persons including Sree-santh, Chavan and Ajit Chandila were discharged in the IPL 6 spot-fixing case by the Patiala House Court last week but the Indian board had refused to lift their ongoing ban.

The Kerala Cricket Asso-ciation had made a plea to the BCCI for allowing Sreesanth to play again but Thakur said there will be no rethink on the life ban of the two cricketers. Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported that Chavan had written a letter to the Mumbai Cricket Associ-ation (MCA), requesting his ban be revoked and he be allowed to resume his cricket career. The MCA was set to meet on August 2 to discuss the request. “The earlier decision of BCCI’s disclipinary commitee ban on this case will stay on,” Thak-ur told reporters. “Disci-plinary proceedings are

different, criminal pro-ceedings are different. The action taken in the past were based on the disciplinary action for the indiscipline of these players, reports subm-mitted by the the an-ti-corruption unit. So the same decision of ban will continue on these play-ers,” he added. All the three accused cricketers had to spend time in jail during the course of in-vestigation. Of the three, Sreesanth and Chavan are currently serving life bans imposed by the BCCI after the scandal shook the high-profile league, while Chandila’s hearing is still on.

Sri Lanka will look to prevent a clean sweep by Pakistan on the cur-rent tour when they clash in two Twenty20 internationals in Co-lombo tomorrow and Saturday. Pakistan won the preceding Test series 2-1 and also clinched the one-dayers 3-2 to earn a double triumph in the is-land nation for the first time since 2006. But Sri Lanka, the reigning World Twenty20 cham-pions and the top-ranked side in the shortest for-mat, get a chance to sal-vage pride in the two end-of-tour games at the Premadasa stadium. Both sides wear a fresh look under new cap-tains, with sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga leading Sri Lanka and veteran Shahid Afridi taking over at the helm for fifth-ranked Paki-stan. While Malinga has retired from Test cricket and played in four of the five one-dayers, Afridi has quit the other two formats and will make his first appearance on the tour. With the next

World Twenty20 in India just eight months away, both sides have blood-ed new players to give them experience in the nuances of T20 crick-et. Sri Lanka’s 15-man squad includes five un-capped players in bats-men Shehan Jayasuri-ya, Dasun Shanaka and Dhananjaya de Silva, fast bowler Binura Fernan-do and leg-spinner Jef-frey Vandersay. Test and one-day regulars Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have been

The way I look at it is that you have young fast bowlers who are clocking speeds of 140 and above. “They are wicket-taking bowlers. At times, they’ll go for runs. But as long as they come

in and do the job required — that’s bowl fast and pick wickets — as a cap-tain, I think he’ll be hap-py.” He reflected on the plight of the pacers in the first match saying: “There wasn’t enough purchase for the seamers. The ball wasn’t coming on, and it was pretty hot out there.” “In terms of the way we bowled, I think they played their roles. That’s what we wanted, and I’m pretty happy with that.”

At least 14 persons died after heavy rains battered several districts of north Gujarat on Tuesday, throw-ing normal life out of gear, cutting off power supply to over 2,900 villages, shutting down schools and leading to rain-re-lated accidents. Lakhni taluka of Banaskantha re-ceived a phenomenal 21 inches of rain during the day. Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Reserve Police (SRP) and Bor-der Security Force (BSF) were deployed for rescue operations. Twelve vic-tims who died are from

Banaskantha — one of the worst-affected districts — while two others died in rain-related incidents in Ahmedabad and Kheda districts. “Twelve persons have died in Banaskantha district,” said Banaskan-tha resident additional collector N D Mistry on Tuesday evening. Six bodies have been recov-ered while the authorities are searching for others who went missing in the flooding caused due to heavy rains in Dhanera, Lakhni and Vav talukas of the district. “Banaskantha district received 15 inch rainfall overnight since Monday, of which Lakh-

ni alone had a rainfall of 21 inches,” Mistry add-ed. In Ahmedabad, Ran-jitsinh Thakor (30) died when a tree fell on an au-to-rickshaw opposite No-bel Nagar police station around noon on Tuesday. Chief minister Anandiben Patel held a high-level meeting to take stock of the situation in the north. Last month, a flash flood claimed nearly 70 hu-man lives in Amreli. It also claimed a dozen li-ons and hundreds of blue bulls. In the meeting, it was decided to keep the schools and anganwadis in these districts closed for 2-3 days. The chief

A repairman from Gujarat has successfully designed ‘an AC sofa’ which can be used even at outdoor events and consumes less electricity than the tower air-conditioners. Gandhi-nagar resident Dashrath Patel, who repairs ACs, came up with the idea some years ago. He was helped by the Nation-al Institute of Design in developing the product. “I first thought of install-ing air-conditioner in a sofa in 2008 and started

working on it. But the first sofa I made weighed around 175 kg, which was way too heavy,” Patel. “Then I heard of ‘Design Clinic Scheme’ of MSME ministry and I approached them. They provided me a designer who modified the design and changed the materi-al, reducing the weight to 35 kgs,” Patel said. The design clinic scheme of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium En-terprises is being run in collaboration with NID since 2010, said Kumar-

The sting of the mosquito is already getting sharper with the rising number of dengue cases stok-ing fears of a possible outbreak in the coming weeks. Since July 1, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run VS, LG, and Shardaben hospitals have together registered 92 dengue cases, against only 16 last year. Vari-ous private hospitals in Gurukul, SG Highway, Thaltej, Rakhial, Sola and Memnagar regis-tered 190 cases this July.Even as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation

attributed the spike in the number of patients to intermittent rain, doctors said this is only the be-ginning as the monsoon has just gained momen-tum in the city. “We’ve seen 50 dengue cases this month,” said Jayesh Trivedi, MD, internal medicine. “The condi-tions have become con-ducive for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. In fact, there will be more cases once rain activity subsides as mosquitoes will breed in stagnant pools of water.” Not only has there been a sharp rise in the cases, but dengue is also more virulent this time.

Despite heavy rain, Pati-dar community members trickled to Vijapur in Me-hsana district on Tuesday morning to take out a rally demanding reservation for Patels in government jobs and education. The rally was peaceful and ended after a memorandum was submitted to Vijapur mam-latdar. On the ground, lead-ers threatened that peaceful protests will turn violent if administration attempts to intimidate Patidar leaders or police attempt to arrest them. Hardik Patel, conve-ner of Patidar Anamat An-dolan Samiti, Gujarat, said, “Our peaceful protests will turn violent if any of our taluka or district leaders are threatened or police at-tempt to arrest any conve-ner of the stir. Gujarat will see never-witnessed-be-fore violence for which the party in power (BJP) and opposition (Congress) will be responsible.”

A division bench of Gu-jarat high court com-prising Justice Mohin-der Pal and Justice R D Kothari on Tuesday began hearing the ap-peals in the 2002 Naro-da Patia massacre case. Refusing to give pref-erence in hearing to the appeal filed by former minister Maya Kodnani, the bench said it would hear appeals filed by all the accused, the SIT and the witnesses together, and move ahead with the proceedings step by step. Thirty-two convicts, in-cluding Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi, have appealed

against their conviction by the special SIT court for their role in the kill-ing of 97 persons, main-ly women and children on February 28, 2002. The Supreme Court-ap-pointed SIT has sought enhancement in punish-ment and also challenged the acquittal of 29 per-sons. The witnesses, too, have questioned the ac-quittals. Earlier attempts to hear the appeals had attracted controversy af-ter three judges declined to hear them while a for-mer judge’s willingness to hear them despite the opposition of some wit-nesses, took the matter to the Supreme Court.

Even as the nation mourned the loss of for-mer President APJ Ab-dul Kalam, who passed away on Monday evening while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, his ties to Gujarat and many of its institutions endeared him to the state, which he visited frequently over the years. Speaking about Kalam’s penchant for Gujarat, IIM-A gold medalist and adviser to Kalam for six years, Sri-jan Pal Singh, says, “Few people know that Ka-lam’s tryst with Gujarat began with his fascina-tion with state’s agricul-tural growth at 8.9 %. In fact, during my MBA at IIM-A, I had made a pre-sentation to him on the ‘Gujarat model of agri-culture’. The book Tar-get 3 billion that I co-au-thored with him has 14
