Reports claimed on Tues-day that the Congress has finally taken a decision on bringing in Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to cam-paign for the party across Uttar Pradesh for the crucial Assembly Elec-tions next year. Several media outlets, including India Today, reported that the party is expected to make a formal announce-

ment regarding the same in the next 48 hours or latest by the end of this week. This is confirmed that she has agreed to be-come the lead campaign-er. This will be formally announced by the AICC (All India Congress Com-mittee) in a day or two, an informed source said. The reports came even as party spokespersons refused to say anything

on the speculation going on in the media regard-ing Priyankas expanded role something which analysts see as Priyan-kas entry into full-time politics. We refuse to indulge in speculation. If and when a decision is taken regarding the role of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, we shall be happy to share it (with you), Congress spokesman RS Surjewala had told the media earlier in the day. Congress leaders have so far remained tight-lipped over reports that Priyan-ka Gandhi would be the partys star campaigner in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh and also on the issue of elevation of Rahul Gand-hi as the party chief.

An-upriya Patel, the Apna Dal MP from Mirzapur in Ut-tar Pradesh, is the daughter of party founder Sone Lal Patel, she has been veer-ing the Uttar Pradesh party towards the BJP in the run up to the elections. There is widespread speculation that the party will merge with the BJP before the

elections. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is hoping to attract Other Backward Castes (OBC) votes by inducting Apna Dal MP from Mir-zapur Anupriya Patel into the Modi cabinet. Howev-er, Apna Dal has its prob-lems: it is in the throes of internal turmoil due to a feud between Anupriya and her mother, Krishna Patel. While Krishna had expelled Anupriya from the party in May 2015, both Krishna and Anupri-ya still claim to be national

president of Apna Dal. The rift in the party, which has two MPs and is BJPs ally at the Centre, surfaced in October 2014 when An-upriya had said that her mothers decision to make her elder sister Pallavi Pa-tel the partys vice-pres-ident was illegal and ar-bitrary. Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar was promoted to the Cabinet rank in the latest reshuffle of the Na-rendra Modi government. He took oath today at a function at the Rashtrapa-ti Bhavan. Javadekar had earlier held the Information and Broadcasting portfolio also, but Finance Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was handed over this ministry.
