QUOTE OF THE

DAYJNU controversy: Can Rahul revive Congress on the campus

Three back-to-back issues – FTII row, Rohith Vemu-la’s suicide and now JNU controversy – have infused fresh energy to the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Congress party’s student wing, which has been struggling to regain its space in campus politics. The last two have also prompted the NSUI to reach out to Left, Dalit and other organisations in a bid to launch a united front against its arch rivals Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). And at the forefront of the NSUI revival efforts is Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who joined the students twice at the University of Hyderabad to protest the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula. Gandhi also backed the agitating Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students who were protest-ing the arrest of their leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Ku-mar has been booked under charges of sedition over a protest organised in the JNU campus on February 9 against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. The Congress vice-president had earli-er visited the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) at Pune to express solidarity with students protesting against the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as its chairperson. The intent is clear – the Congress is desperately trying to win back not only the support of the Dalits, who have moved away from the party over the years, but also the youth and student community which, to a large extent, had de-serted it in the wake of a series of corruption scan-dals during the UPA rule. While the half of India’s population of 1.25 billion is under 25 years of age, 65% people are 35 or under. Their disillusionment with the Congress saw groundswell of support for the anti-corruption movement launched by Anna Hazare in 2011. The NSUI had lost the Delhi Uni-versity polls for the second consecutive year in 2015 and its presence remains negligible in JNU campus. “This will certainly help NSUI to reconnect with the student community. ABVP is creating trouble in every university. They (ABVP) have got a protective umbrella in the form of central government and are using it to their advantage. The Congress revival is also linked to NSUI resurgence,” CP Bhambri, polit-ical analyst and a distinguished scholar at JNU said. However, the NSUI has tried to make a clear distinc-tion as far as the JNU row is concerned. It has strong-ly condemned the “eulogising” of Afzal Guru and at the same time maintained that any attempt to label the institution as “anti-national” was “unacceptable”. “We respect the verdict given by the Supreme Court and there is no second-guessing that he was a terrorist and it should not even be a subject of discussion.

“Bollywood always tries to give a good message and it is not right to blame films for the ills in society. At the end of the day, we always show that truth triumphs”

India’s trade deficit narrowed to an 11-month low in January due to a sharp decline in the imports of petroleum products and electronic items even as exports continued to contract for the 14th month in a row amid tepid global demand and a volatile global currency market. Data released by the com-merce ministry on Monday showed merchandise exports contracted 13.6% in January while mer-chandise imports shrank 11% leading to a trade deficit of $7.6 billion. In the same month, China’s exports fell 11.2%—the seventh straight month of decline, while imports tumbled 18.8%—the 15th month of decline, both far worse than expected, data released by the Chinese General Administra-tion of Customs showed on Monday. It seems like Apple Store isn’t the only facility Apple plans to open in India. The first offshore technology development centre at Hyderbad is in the works. Following Google and Microsoft’s foot-steps, Apple is showing greater interest in the Indi-an customer with plans to set up a 2,50,000 square feet technology development centre at the Tishm-na Speyer’s WaveRock facility in Hyderabad’s IT corridor. The facility is expected to open in June. It is expected to be operating in full swing by the end of 2016 and create 4,500 jobs. “It’s a very pos-itive development as Apple has not looked at cities only in India, but across many places in Europe and other parts of the world. Their decision to have the facility in Hyderabad is a strong endorsement of the city as a major IT hub in the country,” Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary to IT department in the state of Telangana said.

By the end of this week, the Pakistan Cricket Board could get the nod from its government to travel to India for next month’s World Twenty20. Another development which only strengthens this possibility is the fact that on Monday the ICC announced the schedule for the warm-up matches for the tournament and Pakistan’s matches are scheduled in Kolkata, where they play their first league match on March 16. “We had ap-plied for the clearance about eight-ten days back. We are waiting, but we are very positive,” Amjad Hussain, director, media coordination and implementation. How-ever, another key PCB

Spanish tennis stars Rafa-el Nadal and David Fer-rer insisted they were not worried by Brazil’s Zika virus outbreak as they prepare to compete at the Rio Open ATP tourna-ment this week. “I’m not at all afraid,” Nadal, 29, told a press conference. “I go out at night, and I know there’s a risk, but I’m just happy to be back in Rio de Janeiro again. “If I get sick well then that’s just bad luck,” insisted the 14-time Grand Slam winner. I can see for myself that

people in Rio de Janeiro are going about their busi-ness as if everything was okay, so things can’t be that bad. “People are go-ing to the beach, going out for walks, having dinner in restaurants,” the world number five continued. Ferrer, ranked sixth in the world, said he had been re-assured by Brazil’s efforts to wipe out the mosqui-toes which carry the virus. “We’ve been told that ev-erything possible has been done so that there will be no mosquitoes, which is comforting,” he said.

“We’ve been wearing long trousers at night but I’m not getting obsessed by the whole thing.” Bra-zil has been most affected by the outbreak that has spread rapidly through Latin America and the Caribbean, with 1.5 mil-lion people in the country infected since early 2015. While it causes only mild flu-like symptoms in most people, scientists suspect when it strikes a pregnant woman, it can cause her baby to be born with mi-crocephaly, or an abnor-mally small head.
