QUOTE OF THE

DAYThe BJP appeared poised for the politics of ideas in 2015

Democratic politics takes place before our own eyes and yet often deceives us as to the real contestations. A casual look at competitive politics during 2014 would thus tell us that this was a year of setbacks for the BJP. This assessment, of course, would not be wrong. Af-ter all, the BJP failed to win both Delhi and Bihar. In Delhi, it had been the major opposition for the past de-cade and a half, and given its parliamentary sweep in Delhi, it was all set to come to power there. In Bihar too, Narendra Modi had dented the image of Nitish Kumar during the parliamentary elections a year ago and annexed smaller parties as allies. Yet, in both elec-tions, the BJP failed to gain a majority. But let us look at it from a different angle. Elections are crucial to a party’s existence and prospects, but electoral victories constitute only one part of the ambitions of parties like the BJP. Gaining governmental power is not the end it would be satisfied with. It nurtures the larger ambition of shaping a new hegemony. The Hindutva project in general, the RSS as an organisation and Modi’s 2014 electoral campaign, all represent this larger ambition. The catchy slogan of “Congress-mukt Bharat” has not been adequately understood by Modi’s critics (and much less by the Congress itself). That slogan repre-sented the ambition — not merely to replace the Con-gress but to constitute a new public reason. So, electoral upsets notwithstanding, how did the BJP move towards this larger goal? This year could easily be described as the year of the ideological offensive by the BJP. Only by doing so can we make sense of the various disparate developments and understand the implicit link between the maverick extremist fringe and apparently sober el-ements of Hindutva. Four seemingly unconnected de-velopments during the outgoing year represent the of-fensive. The year was dominated by the cow and beef issue. This closely followed the emphasis on yoga and occasional demands to promote the Gita. From Gita to gaumata, each scripted a new set of cultural mores. Each one was marshalled to raise the Hindu conscious-ness with all the ambiguities involved in the complex network of religion and civilisation. It is not that the BJP and Hindutva organisations have discovered the cow only now, but that at the current juncture, we wit-ness an effort to popularise new cultural mores, make them dominant through these symbols and markers. At one end, there is intimidation against the consumption of beef; at another, there is a shaping of the new culture that determines and dictates what to eat or wear, what and how to celebrate, and so on. Thus, for the so-called fringe, the debate was literally about cow and beef.

“Everyday through the media, they keep creating controversy. Like human beings can’t live without oxygen, AAP government can’t live without controversy,” - Taking a dig at the AAP government, Union minister

Kiren Rijiju today said the city government can’t live without controversy.

The Maharashtra govern-ment on Tuesday allotted a prime plot in Andheri to actor and BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Hema Malini at a nominal price to set up a classical dance school and a cul-tural complex. The land, measuring 2,000 square metres and estimated to be worth more than Rs 20 crore as per the ready reckoner rates, is situated in the western suburbs. It

has been allotted to Natya Vihar Kala Kendra char-ity trust headed by the actor. The decision to al-locate the land came after 19 years as Hema Malini had applied for the land to the Maharashtra govern-ment back in 1996. State revenue minister Eknath Khadse announced the decision on Tuesday. He even handed over the or-der copy to the actor at his official residence. Ac-cording to Vinod Sampat, president, Registration

Fee and Stamp Duty Pay-ers’ Association, the total cost of the land would be around Rs21 crore. “As per the current ready reckoner rate, the cost of the land in Ambiva-li, Andheri, works out to around Rs1,01,400 per square metre. Going by this, the total cost of the land works out to around Rs21 crore,” he said. But, the charitable trust does not have to pay the cost of the land as per the exist-ing ready reckoner rates.

Actor Salman Khan’s controversial decision to name his online venture khanmarketonline has split traders at Delhi’s posh Khan Market down the middle, with some shopkeepers backing the Bollywood star and oth-ers fuming over a sup-posed attempt to benefit from the high-profile des-tination’s reputation. Akshay Kumar gives re-alism a suave twist in the upcoming biggie Airlift, and the superstar gave a glimpse of his all-new avatar when he arrived on the set of the popu-lar stand-up roast show Comedy Nights Bachao, to shoot a special episode to promote the film. Ac-companying Akshay was

co-star Nimrat Kaur, who returns to the Hindi screen after her much-feted role in The Lunchbox. Nim-rat shed the middle-class homemaker image she portrayed in that globally awarded film, and opted for a pretty glam make-over in a printed dress. The show is known for its irreverent humour and a rich stock of talented co-medians who love taking

In the modern times, where potato chips, choco-lates and bacon double cheeseburgers are waiting to lure the taste buds, people often gobble on food without being hungry. In contrast to people in tradi-tional societies, who are far away from such temp-tations, people in contemporary societies often eat not on account of hunger, but because tasty food is available and beckoning at all hours of the day. In a recent study, researchers found that the tendency of today’s consumers to eat when they are not hungry might be less advantageous for health than eating when they are hungry. The results of the study that involved 45 undergraduate students showed that in-dividuals who were moderately hungry before the meal tended to have lower blood glucose levels af-ter consuming the meal than individuals who were not particularly hungry before consuming the meal. These findings suggest that it might be healthier for individuals to eat when they are moderately hungry

than when they are not hungry.

The government on Wednesday issued a new ad-visory to all Indians travelling to the US following the deportation of a number of Indian students for providing information “inconsistent with their visa status”. “The US government has conveyed that the decision to deny entry to these (Indian) students is not because of the corresponding institutions being ‘black-listed’ but based on the assessment made by the US immigration authorities of individual applicants,” the external affairs ministry said in a statement. “According to the US government, the deported persons had presented information to the border patrol agent which was inconsistent with their visa status,” it added. Earlier this month, 14 Indian students who had gone to join the Silicon Valley University at San Jose and Northwestern Polytechnic University at Fremont -- both in Cal-ifornia -- were deported by the US authorities. In a statement, national carrier Air India said it re-ceived a communication on December 19 from the Customs and Border Protection that the two uni-versities were under scrutiny and the students who arrived in San Francisco were not allowed to enter the US and were deported back to India.

The year 2016 brings Olympics with it and India’s chief national badminton coach Pulle-la Gopichand said Saina Nehwal’s bronze medal in London 2012 was the best thing to have happened to Indian badminton. “For me personally, the medal we won in London was one of the biggest mo-ments for Indian badmin-ton. To better it (in Rio de Janeiro) would be great.

Even otherwise, to have a bigger contingent gives us a chance of a medal be-cause I believe all of our players who qualify will stand a (good) chance to win a medal,” Gopichand said here on Wedenesday. Gopichand, however, re-fused to comment on the kind of pressure Saina might be facing as she gears up for Rio Olym-pics. “I don’t want to re-ally comment on that. She has a different coach and I would let them handle

that,” said Gopichand. Gopichand guided Saina to India’s lone badminton medal in Olympics till date but since the second half of 2014, the world No. 2 women’s singles player has shifted base from Hyderabad to Ben-galuru to train with Vimal Kumar at Prakash Padu-kone Badminton Acade-my. He added that while there is still time for the Olympics, it would not be wise to take any medal for granted.

Uncapped fast bowler Hardus Viljoen was add-ed to South Africa’s test squad on Thursday after Kyle Abbott felt tight-ness in his left hamstring during the team’s defeat in the first test against England on Wednesday. “With a short turnaround between the first and sec-ond tests, we’ve included Hardus in the squad as a precautionary measure to cover all our bases,” said Cricket South Africa con-vener of selectors, Linda Zondi. A prominent farm activist has called upon the Maha-rashtra government to pro-vide immediate relief to Vidarbha’s cotton growers by emulating the ‘Gujarat model’ and declaring bo-nus for the produce sold through Cotton Corpora-tion of India centres. The Gujarat government re-cently declared a bonus of Rs 650 per quintal on the produce sold through CCI centres. “Cotton-pro-ducing farmers are already facing an economic bur-den due to crop failure for the last two years. On top of it, market rates of cotton are also sluggish, nearing the minimum support price (MSP) lev-el,” Kishor Tiwari, who has now been appointed director of the state gov-ernment’s Vasantrao Naik Shetkari Swavlamban Mission (VNSSM), said. “Thus, the state govern-

ment, as a healing touch to these farmers, should declare a bonus for them, taking cues from the Gu-jarat government.” Tiwari said he has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, stating that the condition of farmers in Maharashtra is worse than in Gujarat, asking him to consider giving a bonus on the lines of an advance bonus payout for cot-ton, which existed before 1997. He cautioned that by the time results of gov-ernment flagship schemes like ‘Jalyukt Shivar Abhi-yan’ and loan waiver of farmers make their mark at the ground level, it might be too late. He suggested that the government can at least help cotton farm-ers with temporary relief until the long-term mea-sures bear fruit. The exer-cise could benefit one lakh cotton growers and is esti-mated to cost the govern-ment around Rs 300 crore.
