QUOTE OF THE

DAYModi can leverage foreign policy, to repair his domestic image

You never let a serious crisis to go to waste,” said Rahm Emanuel, the then White House chief of staff, as a financial disaster threatened America at the dawn of Barack Obama’s presidency. We don’t know whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aware of the “Rahm Theorem”. But he appears conscious of the need to alter the political narrative after the elec-toral debacle in Bihar. A week, it is said, is a long time in politics. If the Bihar results seemed to dimin-ish Modi’s standing, the PM has reasons to bet that he can engineer an early turnaround. Might foreign policy be of some help to the prime minister? There is no dearth of advice on a possible new course. The political part of it suggests that the PM must crack down on the extremists of the Sangh Parivar, who have eroded Modi’s support in the mainstream. The economic part suggests an acceleration of re-forms and concentration on a few major delivera-bles that can credibly improve the PM’s chances for re-election. While Modi’s ability to push through big legislative change has been undermined by the Bihar results, there is much the government could do through executive action. We have seen some initial moves on reform already on liberalising the rules for foreign direct investment. More is expect-ed to follow. But what about diplomacy? Foreign policy rarely figures in domestic political strategies. Whether it is the advanced nations or developing ones, the wallet always matters more than the grand themes of world politics. But diplomacy does offer some political opportunities for leaders who find the going tough at home. Walking the global stage may not get you many votes, but it certainly helps boost the PM’s political image. Diplomacy also helps leverage external opportunities for more rapid in-ternal economic development. While the gestation time can be long, the sense of concrete movement on major transformative projects can boost national economic sentiment. In some contexts, critical ex-ternal partnerships help improve domestic political standing. Recall Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s em-brace of the Soviet Union as the Congress party split in 1969. Moscow helped her win the support of the Left in the country to fend off her Congress rivals on the right. Resuming the peace process with Pakistan might seem a lot more difficult. It is worth recalling though that PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whom Modi cites quite often in relation to Jammu and Kashmir, made consistent efforts under lot more difficult cir-cumstances to improve ties with Pakistan at the turn of the millennium.

or terrifyingly different? Each part, filmed by a different eye and sensi-bility, should have creat-

ed an intriguing jigsaw. But the execution fails the ambition of this film : ‘X’ plays out as a dis-

jointed stutter, rather than a seamless progression, its backing-and-forthing more choppy and con-

fusing than anything else. The director, who is the central figure, remains the same. That is, he is played by the same actor. Ans-human Jha, as the young man, and Rajat Kapoor as the older, greying man, still in search of himself. The journey takes him through his past, and ten former girl-friends, whom he encounters at differ-ent stages : he turns out to be a real number, this K, with his slippery grin and side shuffle, hidden behind dark glasses, and a permanent state of drift.

Or he would have, if this film had actually turned out to be one. But except for one segment, right at the end, which has Swara Bhaskar and the young Jha, and a sense of time and place, the rest have practically no weight, nor heft. They just go past in a blur, without any real markers. The lines sound forced, and Kapoor says them without investing anything in his charac-ter. Did he find an outline which he wanted to fill, or was he left, like us, look-ing for one?

then for the film Tevar, “it was a niggling thought that I had to do this.” So, is an album on the cards? “Yes, it would be the most natural thing to do,” said Sonakshi. The actress, who has done her first female-oriented film, AR Murugadoss’s Akira, said that after constantly be-

ing badgered for doing performance-oriented roles she felt that ‘this is my answer.’ And on the question of pay parity, the actress said, “Yes, there is talk of gender equal-ity and if an actress to can rake in the same box office collections as the hero than why not.”

As the film is set in the World War II era, there were no electronic rollers avail-able during that time to make things easy. SPORTS ROUNDUPRicoh Theta S 360-degree Camera Launched at Rs. 39,995

CBdT lays out roadmap for pullback of exemptions, deductions

Vodafone users in Delhi can now choose their mobile number

Ricoh India just launched its latest 360-degree camera called the Theta S at a price of Rs. 39,995. The camera is available for a pre-order price of Rs. 7,199 through Ricoh’s online store and will begin shipping in December. A note of caution here; the pre-order price can be easily mistaken for the final price when you view the product by category, as the price break-up is only mentioned in the ‘View De-tails’ page. Apart from this, there’s no mention about the remainder amount to be paid anywhere even after checkout, which can be misleading. The Theta S is the size of your average air-conditioner remote con-trol and is fairly light too, at 125 grams. The entire body has a rubberised coating making it easy to grip. The highlights of the camera are the two 12-megapix-el fish-eye lenses placed on either side to give you an

instant 360-degree picture or video.

In a move that could see India’s tax environment becoming more conducive for investment, the gov-ernment on Friday came out with a roadmap for phasing out exemptions and deductions availed by companies on levies to eventually rationalise the corporate tax. This is in line with the finance min-ister Arun Jaitley’s announcement in his Budget speech of bringing down the current corporate tax rate of 30% to 25% over the next four years. The various suggestions proposed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) include gradually ending profit-linked, investment-linked and area-based deductions for both corporate and non-corporate tax payers, termination of sunset dates by March 31, 2017 for commencement of activity and ben-efit claims, doing away with weighted deductions on specified businesses from April 1, 2017, among others. “This is a step towards simplification of tax laws, which is expected to bring about transpar-ency and clarity,” said the statement issued by the

An official of the company said for post-paid customers, first 4 digits are fixed and for pre-paid, first 5 digits are fixed, rest of the combi-nation can be chosen by the customers. “Our cus-tomer research also indicates that there is a deep interest amongst the mobile users to have numbers aligned with some significant event in their lives,” Vodafone India Business Head (Delhi and NCR) Apoorva Mehrotra said.

Jos Buttler’s re-cord-breaking century and a more routine one from Jason Roy fired England to an 84-run win over Pakistan in a high-scoring final one-day international in Dubai on Friday and a 3-1 victo-ry in the series. England piled up 355 for five thanks to Roy’s maiden ODI hundred and But-tler’s magnificent 116 not out off 52 balls. Pakistan

scored quickly in reply but lost wickets steadily and were all out for 271 in the 41st over. Buttler’s extraordinary knock came after being promot-ed to bat at number four at the end of a year in which he often struggled for runs. His century off 46 deliveries broke his own England record and he hit eight sixes — an-other national best — and 10 fours. It was the joint seventh fastest hundred in one-day international

Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Edu-cation Board (GSHSEB) has received a record 3,000 complaints in con-nection with the science stream exams for semes-ter I and III in class XI and XII respectively. Stu-dents, parents and experts sent complaints regarding the recently published provisional answer key. Board officials have ap-pointed a panel of experts to look into the issue and prepare a final answer key after rectifying the errors. Examinations for these two semesters end-ed on November 7 after which board officials put a provisional answer key on its website. In no time, the board’s mailbox was flooded with complaints primarily regarding the

chemistry, biology , physics and mathemat-ics papers. Sources said that around half the com-plaints relate to the biol-ogy papers, where five to seven marks will be affected. “In the biology paper, three questions had two answers that could be termed correct whereas in two questions all the mul-tiple choice options were incorrect,” said sources. As each mark in science stream affects the final results of class XII and ultimately students’ ad-missions, the stakehold-ers are in no mood to take chances, they added. This is why a panel with four experts each from Gu-jarati and English medi-ums has been formed by the board and is looking into the matter for the last three days.

Five persons from the Muslim commu-nity have been arrested under the Pre-vention of Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006, by Gaikward Haveli police sta-tion. The accused — husband of the mi-nor, three witnesses and the priest (Kazi) who performed the nikah (marriage) — were later granted bail. The develop-ment comes following a Gujarat High Court’s directive on September 23 that allowed police to take action against the accused under the Act, noting that “the provisions of PCMA would prevail over

Muslim personal laws”. “As per the court’s order, we have booked the five persons in the case on Thursday and re-corded their statements. They were ar-rested and later released on bail. We are probing it further,” said senior police inspector V M Selar of Gaikwad Haveli police station. Those arrested have been identified as Yunus Usman Shaikh, 28, a resident of Raikhad, who married the minor 12 years younger than him, Gu-lam Mohammed Aslam Safi Malek, 48, a resident of Jamalpur Chakla who al-legedly performed the nikah.

This time, the BJP has given tickets to over 500 Muslim can-didates. It’s the highest tally after the party al-lotted around 300 tickets to Muslim candidates in

2011, soon after Modi started his Sadbhavana mission to promote har-mony. “BJP did not have an office anywhere in Ju-hapura. If the party put up a poster, people used to tear it down. Such was the anger among people who could not forget the 2002 riots,” said Munirkhan Pathan, 40, who joined the BJP three years ago.

“But in this local body elections, the BJP has sprung a surprise by pre-senting Muslim residents as a political alternative,” Pathan added.
