QUOTE OF THE

DAYLieutenant emperor ‘Jung’ has slammed CM

Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has slammed chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying his open let-ter’s reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “inappropriate” and “deeply disappointing”. “I must say that the tone of your letter leaves me deeply disappointed. Such inappropriate references vis-a-vis the Prime Minister do not reflect well on the chief minister of a Union Territory,” Jung said in a letter to the chief minister. “Your letter, being in public domain, leads to unsavoury and avoid-able comments not just within the country, but also overseas. I speak with a concern about national honour and pride,” he said. Jung was responding to Kejriwal’s letter on Thursday in which the Aam Aadmi Party chief had alleged the LG was working at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to weaken the Delhi government. “The reality is the LG is not doing this on his own. He is doing all this at the instance of the PM. Even the home ministry is increasingly become helpless before the prime minister’s office,” Kejriwal had said. The Kejriw-al-led AAP flattened the opposition in the Febru-ary polls but has been embroiled in a turf war with Jung after he appointed several senior bureaucrats against the wishes of the chief minister and over-ruled many Delhi government picks. The latest spat between the two men has been over appointment of AAP leader Swati Maliwal appointment as chief of the Delhi Commission for Women. With yet an-other letter to the Delhi government on Wednes-day, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has sparked one more confrontation with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The pretext this time is the appointment of the chairperson of the mostly ineffectual Delhi Commission for Women. Two days after the gov-ernment appointed Swati Maliwal to the post, the lieutenant governor annulled the appointment cit-ing a violation of the rules. This time, he has also — outrageously — asserted that he was “the gov-ernment of Delhi”. As in all the earlier instances — transfer postings in the Delhi bureaucracy, the appointment of the Delhi home secretary and of the Anti-Corruption Branch chief — Jung’s decision has given the Aam Aadmi Party an excuse to shift from governance to agitation, something it is far more adept at. The lieutenant governor has clearly overstepped his brief in discharging his duties as the administrator of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and continues to do so. He is bringing into disrepute not only his own office but also the Union government and specifically the ministry of home affairs under whose supervision he functions. Jung is among the few Congress-appointed governors who were not asked to go by the Narendra Modi government when it took charge.

“Those who question Yakub Memon death penalty can go to Pakistan, I think those who cannot respect this nation, the national flag, Constitution, & the judiciary such people do not have the right to live in India.”

The Dark Horse hitmaker waded into a war of words between her long-time ri-val and rapper Nicki Minaj over the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominations and in a thin-ly-veiled attack suggested Swift, 25, is a hypocrite, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The 30-year-old shared her thoughts on the dis-pute on micro-blogging site Twitter on Wednesday, writing: “Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women ar-gument about as one un-measurably capitalises on the take down of a wom-an...” Shortly afterwards, Minaj, 32, favourited the tweet. The brunette beauty and Swift have been em-broiled in a feud, which is believed to have inspired the latter’s latest track Bad blood, for some time. The spat between Swift and Minaj erupted on after the hip hop star bemoaned being nominated for just

three VMAs, with her An-aconda video being over-looked for the top prize, Video of the Year. “When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination,” she tweeted. “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year. “I’m not al-ways confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it (sic),” she further added. But Swift - who received nine nominations in total - felt the tweets were aimed at her and hit back saying she has loved and support-ed Minaj. “I’ve done nothing but love & support you.

It seems like that this is doppelganger week. Af-ter Virat Kohli’s Pakistani lookalike started to do the rounds on the internet, we now have a desi version of the Captain Jack Spar-row, the swashbuckling, effeminate pirate played by Johnny Depp. While Jack Sparrow earned a living by looting and pil-laging (though we didn’t see him doing too much of that in the movies), his doppelganger is a rickshaw-puller in New Delhi. The Jack Sparrow

lookalike was spotted by Meynell Arora who put up the picture on her timeline. Captain Jack Sparrow, played by John-ny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was actually supposed to be a side character; while the main focus was on William Turner and Eliza-beth Swan. In fact, studio bosses were very skep-tical about Depp’s inter-pretation of the character who thought he looked ‘drunk and gay’. a stinging criticism, for-mer India captain Sunil Gavaskar today said that young left-arm spinner Axar Patel was not Test cricket material and was at best “a roller of the ball” who was very much predictable. Ga-vaskar said that 21-year-old spinner was “not the next big thing of Indian cricket” and could not be considered as a special-ist spinner in Test crick-et because he does not turn the ball. “No, Axar Patel is not an alterna-tive spinner India should be looking for. He just rolls the ball, he does not have the flight and his deliveries are very much predictable. He does not turn the ball unless the pitch is favourable. He is slightly slower than medium pace,” Gavaskar said when asked whether the youngster could be

a potential Test spinner who can do well for the country. “Yes, Ashwin, Harbhajan, Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma are the spinners India can look for but certainly not Axar Patel,” Gavaskar. as he analysed India’s Test team for the tour of Sri Lanka. Patel has played 18 ODIs and two T20 In-ternationals after making his international debut last year. He has so far taken 23 wickets in his 18 ODIs for an average of 26.60 and economy rate of 4.59. He took two wickets from as many matches in the ODI se-ries against Bangla-desh last month and five scalps in three games in the just-concluded ODI games in Zimbabwe. The former captain rued that India has not produced many quality bowlers in the last few years and he partly blamed the pitch-

es offered in the Ranji Trophy for this. “For the past few years, we have struggled to find qual-ity spinners. One rea-son could be the kind of pitches we are offering for Ranji Trophy match-es. We leave a lot of grass on these Ranji pitches and that does not help quality spinners come through,” he said. “We need to make these pitch-es level playing for both bat and ball. There may be grass but not a lot of grass. Early in the game, the spinners should be able to use their flight and drop the flight on the second and third days. We should prepare pitch-es like this,” he added. Gavaskar described Test captain Virat Kohli’s de-cision to play a India ‘A’ match in Chennai ahead of the Sri Lanka series next month as a right one.

He is expectedly happy to have made a comeback into the Test squad but Amit Mishra said that “he does not need” to look at Pakistan leg-spinner Ya-sir Shah’s recent exploits to get a morale booster ahead of three-Test series against Sri Lanka. “You don’t need someone’s (referring to Yasir Shah) performance to necessari-ly boost your confidence. I am always confident about myself when I bowl well. I am in good form and performing well, so I am confident. But yes, what is important is to adapt to the conditions quickly,” Mishra told me-diapersons on the side-lines of the first ‘unoffi-cial Test’ between India A and Australia A. Mishra however was dismissive about pressures of mak-ing a comeback into the longer format after a gap of four years. He had last played a Test match at the Oval against England

in the disastrous Summer of 2011. “I do not want to put unnecessary burden on myself about good performance. I want to go with a free mind and try to play to my poten-tial. If I have got an op-portunity, I will give my best. I am happy with my comeback. Of course, it’ll b a tough tour. They are good players of spin bowling, so no doubt it is going to be tough. “But will see what can be im-

proved. Will try our best. The selectors have al-ways trusted me and they have given me chance once again it feels good. I have also added variety in my bowling. I have started varying the pace of my deliveries.” Mish-ra termed Kohli as a very good captain. “Virat is a good captain. Whether it is ODIs or anything, he will do a good job. I am celebrat-ing in a great way. All my friends are congratulat-ing me,” Shubham said. “It was all because of my family’s support, my coach, my school which helped me in the US, that’s why I could speak to you actually and my golf club DGC for giving

me all facilities for play-ing. Especially my dad supported me through my life and it has been a great journey. “I am re-ally happy that Shubham has won his second world title in a row,” Jaglan’s mother Anjali said. For-mer golfer Nonita Lall Qureshi has been training Shubham since he was seven-years old. He was five years old when he started golf, practicing in an agricultural field. He has already won over 100 tournaments.

The Mumbai-born player who was bagged by Roy-al Challengers Bangalore for 50 lakh for IPL 8, had impressed with his fear-less performances in the tournament. Last year, Sarfaraz was omitted from the list of probables for the zonal Twenty20 league after he had al-

legedly made an obscene gesture to the selectors during a Cooch Behar Trophy (U-19) game. He was still selected in the squad after issuing an apology but his match fees for the 2014-15 sea-son were withheld. There is a possibility that this might have acted as cat-alyst in Sarfaraz’s deci-sion to make the switch. But Naushad denied that MCA’s move had anything to do with the switch to UP.

Finally, the city police has swung into action to crack down on the men-ace of gangs operating in eastern parts of the city, especially in areas like Khokhra, Odhav, Amrai-wadi, Ramol, Naroda and Vatva. City police chief Shivanand Jha has asked the cops to take strict ac-tion within seven days. The police action will be imitated under the code name of “Operation Rak-shak”. Jha on Thursday summoned all senior po-lice officials of the city including deputy commis-sioner of police, (crime

branch) Dipen Bhadran and directed them to act against the gangs of east-ern Ahmedabad and also drug dens in Patva Sheri area of the walled city. It is noteworthy that more than nine gangs are operating in some of the areas of eastern Ahmedabad. “The most notorious of them are the Fracture gang, Kanchinda Gang, Madrasi Gang and Sittu gang” said a police official. Senior police officials said the use of the firearm in Odhav in which gunshots were fired on the office of a former member of Fracture gang and the recent incident of

shootout in Patva Sheri of the walled city is a worry-ing factor. Jha said he has asked his subordinates to crack down on gun run-ners who bring firearms from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and sell it in the city. “I have given a deadline of seven days to the police to give me results. Gangs and hooli-gans will not be allowed to have a free hand to cre-ate menace in the city” added Jha. The Gujarat high court on Thursday issued notice to concerned authorities at the Centre and the state government in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) demanding restric-tion on publication and telecast of false, deceptive advertisements. One Gan-pat Parmar from Visnagar has filed the PIL through advocate Jugal Dave seek-ing restrictions on certain claims made in adver-tisements. The petition argued that companies create false impression about the quality and per-formance of products in order to attract more con-sumers and sell their prod-ucts. The petition says that unethical ways are used to promote products with claims which are not real-istic. The PIL has sought directions to the govern-ments to introduce a mech-anism to filter false claims made in advertisements of beauty and nutrition prod-

ucts. Any new health and nutrition claim has to be approved by a body and the companies should be permitted to run only those approved claims. The PIL has also sought guidelines for the same. The petition-er has sought establish-ment of a committee or board (similar to the film censor board) to will pre-view all advertisements for approval. It has also demanded implementation of a code of conduct for print media and any per-son violating the norms by publishing false and mis-leading ads should be pun-ished. The PIL has sought a ban on cosmetic compa-nies from using special ef-fects and production tech-niques to show the effect of their products because they mislead consumers by exaggerating their ef-fects. There is also a de-mand to prohibit surrogate advertisement of banned products like tobacco and liquor.

The officials recovered several docu-ments during the search. “The evidences gathered by our officials during the searches indicate that the goods were imported by declaring it as Eugenol which contains a mixture of Eugenol and Caryo-phyllene. But the goods were actually clove oil and not Eugenol,” said a DRI official. According to officials, the firm had used this method in order to evade higher payment

The pro-testers first clashed with police when only five persons were allowed to enter the deputy collec-tor’s office to give their application. However the matter was controlled within a few minutes. The rally was part of a series of several demonstrations held by youth of the Pa-

tidar community in the cities of North Gujarat and Rajkot in Saurash-tra, under the aegis of a group called Sardar Patel Sevadal (SPS). The com-munity is considered one of the most prosperous in Gujarat. But President of SPS, Lalbhai Patel, said, “It is a wrong perception that Patidars are wealthy. Thirty per cent of Pa-tidars, despite getting

good marks, do not get admission in prestigious courses.” However, so-ciologist Gaurang Jani raised questions over the group’s demand. “OBC means Socially and Ed-ucationally Backward Class. Patidars are nei-ther socially nor educa-tionally backward…So, either they don’t know what SEBC is, or this is an attempt to mobilise the Patidar community or raise questions over reservation policy (as a whole)… Suppose, Pa-tidars are included in OBC list, then also most of them will not get the benefit as they would be part of creamy layer,” Jani said.
