QUOTE OF THE

DAYA new Bretton WoodsChina’s ability to set up the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, overriding the objections of the US, and the BRICS bank, which aims to start lend-ing next year, are just two signs of how some earlier multilateral agency charters do not properly repre-sent current global power equations. If we go back in time and evaluate how some of these agencies came about, it is wise to ponder on a piece George Orwell wrote in the Tribune in 1944, which was given the title “History is Written by the Winners”. The point that Orwell made in his article, where he took the specific instance of German claims about bombing London in 1941-42, when the Luftwaffe was busy in Russia, was that if Germany had won the war, that inaccurate assertion would have become historical fact. What Orwell does not mention in his thought-ful piece is that not only history but also the global institutions that are formed at such a time bear the full imprint of the winners. Once formed, these insti-tutions continue to largely reflect the original power structure. A country’s power is reflected by its eco-nomic, military and cultural might — by GDP size, per capita income, the size of its army and weaponry (especially its ownership of nuclear weapons) and finally its ability to exercise cultural and moral pow-er. After World War II, three important institutions were created — the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The charter of each of these institutions clearly reflected the results of the war. The primacy of the US was established. Germany, Japan and Italy were ignored. The five na-tions that formed the permanent members of the UN Security Council were the US, UK, France, the Rus-sian Federation and the Republic of China (Taiwan), brought in by the US as a check on the Russians. This position was maintained until 1971, when the People’s Republic of China replaced Taiwan. The Russians did not join the IMF and the World Bank af-ter the Bretton Woods Conference, and so the prima-cy of the US and Europe was established there. The president of the World Bank is always from the US and the managing director of the IMF, from Europe. Even in the IMF, the US has over 17 per cent of the voting rights. Japan and Germany were later allowed to join these institutions. Both Japan and Germany joined the IMF in 1952, Japan joined the UN in 1956 and Germany joined the UN in 1973. It is hard to get countries inside the club to vacate their spots, even if their positions have weakened dramatically since the original charter. Nor is it easy to get other countries to get into apex positions. For the 50 years post World War II, the original structure held up quite well. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the influence of the US became even sharper, but the Russian nuclear stockpile kept it in the Security Council. Over the last 15 years, however, the economic map of the world has been undergoing sharp change, and institutional structures are increasingly less reflective.

Filmmaker S.S Rajamou-li‘s magnum opus “Baa-hubali: The Beginning“, the first part in a two-part war drama, has set the cash registers ring-ing by grossing approx-imately Rs.60 crore on the first day worldwide.

“It’s a phenomenal start. Early estimate suggests that the film has grossed about Rs.60 crore on re-lease day worldwide. This way, it may even reach the Rs.100 crore club over the weekend,” trade analyst Trinath said. The film, which is about the battle between two

brothers for an ancient kingdom, stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anush-ka Shetty and Taman-nah Bhatia, Nasser and Ramya Krishnan in the lead roles. In US alone, “Baahubali…” collected a whopping Rs.15 crore. Produced by Arka Media Works, the film released

in over 4,000 screens in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. “The Telu-gu version did extreme-ly well. The Tamil and Hindi versions did decent business too. In Kerala, since the film managed to release in only 50 screens, it couldn’t open big,” said Trinath.

In an interview, Kanga-na Ranaut admitted in front of her peers that sometimes she takes up a movie purely for the sake of money. “It might not be a great performance or may be something I wouldn’t want to be in,” she said. I Love NY (it’s New Year not New York) surely looks like one of those projects. It’s the sort that Ranaut’s grow-ing fan base, if they could, would have obliterated. And they have good rea-son to too. I Love NY is a mind-numbing watch. It sees Kangana opposite an actor with whom she has zero chemistry despite her laboured attempts to show otherwise. He hap-

pens to be Sunny Deol, whose own attempt to do a Saif Ali Khan and be a romantic-comedy hero for a change is unforget-table for all the wrong reasons. (Deol’s rein-deer-print boxer short, seen in one of the post-ers, is the fashion faux pas of the year to beat.) The biggest flaws of the film, which was report-edly shot in 2011 and nobody wanted released until Ranaut struck big, are its shoddy screen-play, bland characters and unfunny jokes. The age difference between Ranaut and Deol - three decades according to a simple Google search - doesn’t help in making the love story believable.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has an-nounced that there will be a new product launch on July 16. Speculations have it that Mi5 and its bigger variant Mi5 Plus will be unveiled at the event. There are reports emerging now that the new MI5 will be launched on July 17. In a teaser post that was made on Weibo and the image that was shared, the company has con-

firmed that the event will have the launch. The image that was shared was that of the side of a phone, which is believed to be Mi5, which had the letters ‘PK’ imprinted exactly at the middle of the image. Right now, it is unclear whether the phone to be launched is the Mi5 or a newer phone. The biggest fac-tor that is confirming this speculation is the fact that Xiaomi launched Mi4 last year on July 22.

Billionaire Anil Agarw-al-led mining firm Ve-danta Ltd today said it is hopeful of restarting iron ore mining in Goa from October. “We have resumed mining in Kar-nataka in February and we’ve been granted an interim capacity of 5.5 million tonne of saleable ore in Goa and mining is expected to recommence after the monsoons, hopefully from October, after getting the required approvals,” company chairman Naveen Agar-wal told shareholders at the 50th annual general meeting here. He said that the company will resume mining even

though the global iron ore price are on free-fall.The iron ore industry in the state has been closed since 2012 after a Su-preme Court order. The ban was lifted in 2014 but operations are yet to resume. Mr Agarwal also told the sharehold-ers that the company will be shifting its reg-istered office from Goa to Mumbai. “As a glob-al resource company we are now in the process of shifting the registered office to Mumbai. This is a natural shift of location as the company has a large shareholder base of over 3.5 lakh based out of Mumbai,” Mr Agarw-al added.

The only one who hit his stride from kick-off was Indian Super League (ISL) auctioneer Charlie Ross. His buyers took a while to warm up. But by the time Rino Anto’s fu-ture came to be decided, the pedals were moving at a furious pace. From a base price of Rs 17.5 lakh, Anto went to champions Atletico de Kolkata for Rs 90 lakh after Mumbai City FC and FC Goa kept raising the stakes for the right-back who was at Mohun Bagan seven sea-sons ago and who said he is playing his best football after moving to Bengaluru FC. “Being

chosen by the champi-ons makes this special. And you get the maxi-mum crowd in Kolkata,” said Anto. Hurt by Den-zil Franco’s injury last term, Atletico de Kolkata seemed determined to get the India defender, more so because Franco’s still recovering. “We had to get one more player in that position. I am very happy with how the draft and the auction went. Now, it’s time to start work,” Atletico coach Antonio Lopez Habas told HT. Anto’s price was an exception on a day midfielders did the brisk-est business with 18, the largest, being picked from the auction and the

draft. Thoi Singh, who sat stony-faced at dinner on Thursday as his agents wondered what his future held, had a base price of Rs 39 lakh but went for Rs 86 lakh. And before Sunil Chhetri, the most expensive player of the day with Mumbai City FC spending Rs 1.2 crore to get a frontline part-ner for Nicolas Anelka, it was a midfielder who broke the crore-barrier. The faith six franchis-es showed on Eugene-son Lyngdoh meant they were willing to treat his early substitution against Guam in the World Cup qualifier as an aberration and concentrate on his Bengaluru FC form.

Serena Williams made Wimbledon history as the world number one became the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Garbine Muguruza in Sat-urday’s final. Williams was never at her overpow-ering best, but she recov-ered from a slow start to see off the Spanish 20th seed in an 82-minute Cen-tre court triumph that will be remembered more for its historic implications than the quality of the champion’s performance. At 33 years and 289 days, Serena surpasses Martina Navratilova as the oldest player to win Wimble-don, and any of the oth-er three Grand Slams, in the Open era. Serena’s sixth Wimbledon crown brought with it a slew of

other remarkable land-marks that underline her credentials as one of the greatest female athletes of all time. The American’s 21st Grand Slam crown and 68th tour-level title earned her a cheque for £1.8 million ($2.7 million, 2.5 million euros) But it is her legacy rather than her bank balance that con-cerns Williams these days and she now holds all four Grand Slam titles at the same time -- the rare ‘Sere-na Slam’ she last achieved in 2002-03. Serena is the first woman to land the French Open and Wim-bledon back-to-back since she last won that difficult double in 2002. Lifting the Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time since 2012 also leaves Serena need-ing only to defend the US Open to become the first

woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to claim a cal-endar Grand Slam. She is just one major title behind Graf on the Open era lead-erboard and within three of all-time record holder Mar-garet Court’s tally of 24. She is the first player since Graf in 1988 to win Wim-bledon and the Australian and French Opens in the same year. Given Serena’s 39-1 record in 2015 and her astonishing streak of 28 consecutive Grand Slam match victories, few would bet against the American making more history in New York in August. Re-gardless of her defeat, Mu-guruza, 21, has emerged as one of the brightest young stars on the women’s tour after a bravura display in her first Grand Slam final appearance that often left Williams rattled.

A day after Indian foot-ball team captain Sunil Chhetri was grabbed by the Mumbai City FC for a whopping Rs 1.2 crore at the inaugural player auction of the Indian Su-per League (ISL), the star striker shared his hopes and expectations for the second season of the foot-ball tournament during his maiden visit to Indore on

Saturday. Chhetri was in the city to inaugurate the All-India IPSC Football Tournament (boys) for the U-14 and U-17 categories at the Emerald Heights In-ternational School. “The league will play a crucial role in developing the game in the country of a billion (people). I missed the first season, but wit-nessed how people extend-ed their support and made the league successful, and

I’m sure this season will be no different,” the ace striker said. As a veteran footballer and Indian cap-tain, Chhetri knows things won’t change in favour of the sport in a country ob-sessed with cricket over-night. He, however, hopes the ISL will kick things off by generating buzz around the world’s most popular sport. The Indian team will also up its game if it is to draw fans.

Pushed to the brink be-fore managing a nar-row win in the opening ODI, India will have to quickly sort out its mid-dle-order batting woes when it takes on a spirit-ed Zimbabwe in the sec-ond one-dayer in Harare. The visitors huffed and puffed to a narrow four-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. They will now be keen to clinch the series by tak-ing an unassailable 2-0 lead. The Zimbabweans showed why it wouldn’t be all that easy for Ajink-ya Rahane’s men to walk away with wins despite being pre-series favour-ites on paper. The Indi-ans have much to worry about on the batting front

given that the middle or-der let the side down bad-ly. In fact, had it not been for career-best efforts by Ambati Rayudu and Stu-art Binny, even putting up a decent total on the board would have been quite tough for the tourists. Rayudu, whose previous best score was 121, dis-played tremendous ma-turity to steer India to the

250-plus score in the able company of Binny, who also made a career-best 7 off 79 balls. The likes of Murali Vijay (1), Manoj Tiwary (2) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane himself will have to come up with improved performances to ensure that India do not find themselves in anoth-er embarrassing position again in the series.

China. The team of 18 players have been se-lected basis the prepa-ratory camp which was held in New Delhi. The preparatory camp even saw new players getting added to the Nation-al camp and which was basis their good perfor-mance during the 5th Junior Women Nation-al Championship. The team all set to head to-wards Netherlands, will be captained under the guidance of Rani who has to her credit of being the lead striker for the Indian Women Hockey team. Her crucial goal in the match against Ja-pan during the FINTRO Hockey World League Semi-finals ensured the team to claim the 5th position in the important tournament.

After receiving flak for record low results in the secondary and the high-er secondary state board examinations that led to a series of brainstorm-ing sessions by the edu-cation department for a new roadmap, the Guja-rat Secondary and High-er Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has come out with a solution to avoid a similar situ-ation in the future. As a token of appreciation to schools scoring 100 per cent results, the GSHSEB has decided to “reward” those with schools scor-

ing below 30 per cent re-sults under its “adoption” policy. As per the latest decision, a total of 646 schools — both second-ary (Class X) and high-er secondary (Class XII) with 100 per cent results in the 2015 board exam-inations — have to adopt the nearest schools up to Class X, having a history of “poor” results (below 30 per cent). Orders for the implementation of this scheme from the cur-rent academic session has been recently passed to all the district education officers by the GSHSEB. This would be applied to the government as well as

the grant-in-aid schools. Though this adoption scheme started at a low-scale in Bhavnagar by its district education officer (DEO) S L Dodiya last year, it was noticed by the GSHSEB after there was a marked improvement in the schools that were ad-opted. “While discussing various measures to im-prove the results, some-body informed about this adoption scheme being introduced in Bhavnagar. When details were sought from the DEO on its im-plementation and the re-sults, it was decided to replicate it on a larger scale across the state.

Conflict of interest is now a household phrase. Mainstream media (MSM) and the Congress party are the flag-bearers of this newfound morality in public life. The Congress criticises and MSM (particularly English TV) hyperven-tilates and endorses. The main theme of this Congress monologue is that the BJP is just as corrupt as they were (they certainly don’t deny that they were very corrupt!). As proof, evidence is provided about conflict of interest “relationship” of two BJP leaders — Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje — with a former BCCI official, Lalit Modi. As readers of this column know, politicians of both major par-

ties, the Congress and the BJP, have had a long-term cosy club (the CC in BCCI) relationship with the BCCI. I have always believed that invoking the BCCI in your morality defence is a stupid, self-defeating strategy. It is bound to backfire. And the Congress is using this conflict of interest as the prime reason to try to hold up Parlia-ment and prevent discussion of crucial in-the-interest-of-the-nation bills. A pot should not call a kettle black (what is the politically correct phrase in these challenged times?) and people in glass houses should not throw stones. But no point in telling the Congress that. In 2011, the UPA’s sports minister, Ajay Maken, decided to introduce a draft National Sports Development Bill.

Does your child have high fever with white patches on tongue and red rashes on the body? If yes, then he might be suffering from a strange viral fever that has raised its head in the city. The city has reported 218 such cases in last two weeks. Since June 24, pediatri-cian Dr Mona Desai has seen 15 cases where kids aged between 3 and 5 were down with high fe-

Even if the fever subsides a bit, it strikes back after a few hours. This is quite baffling,” Dr Desai said. Pediatrician Dr Nidhish Nanavati has been exam-ining almost 24 similar cases per day for the last one week.

Justice Z K Saiyed of the Gujarat High Court (HC), refusing to grant bail to a Muslim man who had al-legedly posed as a Hindu to marry a woman, on Fri-day rebuked him saying he should not have done that being a “Saiyed”. Justice Saiyed was hear-ing the bail petition of one Ashmatali M Saiyed, who is in judicial custo-dy on charges of domes-tic violence and cheating. Ashmatali is accused of marrying a woman from the Hindu community by faking his identity. It is alleged that Ashmatali, who was already married and has children, did not reveal his religion to the woman before his sec-ond marriage. ”How can

I allow this petition? You (petitioner) are a married person. I will book you for your offence. You are a Saiyed and I am also from the same commu-nity. Saiyeds are gurus of Muslims,” said Justice Saiyed in the open court. He asked Ashmatali’s lawyer about the first wife of the petitioner and the lawyer replied that she was living with her in-laws. Not satisfied with answer, Justice Saiyed expressed his annoyance. Following the argument, Ashmatali’s lawyer said that he would prefer to withdraw the plea. Justice Saiyed, however, said: “I would oblige you by mak-ing an observation in the order.” The court later al-lowed Ashmatali’s lawyer

The crime conference held at the Police headquarters on Friday had to be cut short as rumors of kidnap-ping of three children from a school in Bapunagar and two groups of the same community clashing in the walled city area spread like wild fire in the city. The ru-mors created a major hav-oc in the eastern part of the city that parents rushed to a few schools to take back their wards. However, the cops breathed a sigh of re-lief when it turned out to be rumor. Meanwhile City Police chief Shivanand Jha reprimanded the cops for dip in the crime detection rate. “He also came down heavily on the cops for being effective in curbing the rumor mongering” said a senior police official. There was special men-tion of the armed robbery incident at a jeweller’s shop in Ghatlodia. Four days after the incident took place, the cops including the city crime branch is not able catch the culprits. Ac-

cording to sources Jha ex-pressed concern about un-der performance of some of the Police inspectors and sub inspectors posted in the city crime branch. “He said nobody should take their place for granted any-where. He warned the sub inspectors and inspectors to perform or perish” said a police source. Jha asked senior police officials of the city crime branch to ad-vice and help junior police officers to improve their performance. Sources said Jha also came down heav-ily on Police control vans and hawk squads posted in different areas of the city, which proved in-effective in catching the Ghatlodia robbers. ACS (Home) PK Taneja on Friday evening suddenly landed up at the Police commission-er’s office in Shahibaugh.
