QUOTE OF THE

DAYResumed India-Pakistan dialogue is welcome

The good news that India and Pakistan will resume their “comprehensive bilateral dialogue” should be greeted with careful expectations about the road ahead. The revival of the dialogue, which covers a multitude of issues, including counter-terrorism, economic and commercial cooperation, humanitar-ian issues, border arguments and the future of Kash-mir, was made in Islamabad on December 9, after a two- year hiatus. The announcement followed a series of quiet meetings between the leadership of the two countries in the last month. The key to the breakthrough appears to be a Pakistani commitment to move forward with bringing to justice the perpe-trators of the November 26, 2008 attack on Mumbai. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had promised Washington during his visit last month that Paki-stan would take action against the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the group responsible for the attack. Since the head of the LeT, Hafiz Saeed, operates openly in Pakistan and enjoys the strong support of Pakistani intelligence, many in India are understandably scep-tical that Nawaz can deliver. Let us see if he can. If Pakistan does take concrete and verifiable actions against the LeT, the burden will quickly move to try-ing to find some movement on the most contentious issue of them all, the future of Jammu and Kashmir. No one expects an early breakthrough on that score, but there are useful lessons to be learned by review-ing the one previous intensive eff-ort to resolve the conflict. That was in the wake of the 1962 Chinese invasion of India. In 1962, one of US President John F. Kennedy’s most serious challenges during the Si-no-Indian war was to keep Pakistan from opening a second front against India. Then Pakistan President Ayub Khan told Kennedy that he wanted “compen-sation” from India in Kashmir for Pakistan’s neutral-ity during the war. Kennedy made clear to Ayub that no such compensation would be tolerated, and that Pakistani intervention in the war in the Himalayas would be seen by Washington as a hostile act. After the war ended in November, Kennedy did encourage India-Pakistan talks on Kashmir that went on for six rounds through 1963. The lessons of this history are still relevant today. A territorial settlement between India and Pakistan remains a bridge too far. The fo-cus should be on much more tangible achievements aimed at improving the life of Kashmiris on both sides of the border, and de-escalating tensions. Here again, tangible action by Pakistan against the LeT and other terrorists should be a priority.

“Nothing has changed on the ground. Because we had said that terror and talks cannot go together, Whenever talks happen, that is based on trust….There is a need to bridge the gulf (with Pakistan),”

Twitter warning users against state-sponsored cyber attacks

Sensex ends 106 points up at 25,150 in a volatile trade; Nifty settles at 7,650

Have you felt like walking away from Facebook or to shut down your account swearing never to return, only to meekly log back in a week later? You are not alone. Researchers from Cornell Uni-versity have found four key reasons why people make the pledge not to log in to Facebook but ul-timately could not resist the allure of Facebook’s social network. “The first reason is perceived ad-diction. Those who feel that Facebook is addictive or habitual were more likely to return,” said lead researcher Eric Baumer. One participant described this habitual aspect by saying, “In the first 10 days, whenever I opened up an internet browser, my fingers would automatically go to ‘f.’” Another reason is privacy and surveillance. Users who felt their Facebook activity was being monitored were less likely to revert, while those who use Facebook largely to manage how other people think of them

are more likely to log back in.

Twitter Inc has alerted some users that state-spon-sored hackers may have tried to obtain sensitive data from their accounts, the first such warning by the micro blogging site. The notice said there was no indication the hackers obtained sensitive infor-mation from what it said were a “small group of accounts” targeted. It did not provide additional in-formation about the attack or possible suspects in its investigation. Twitter’s notice is the latest amid concern about cyber attacks by state-sponsored organisations. Government agencies, businesses and media have all been hacked. Recently, Goo-gle and Facebook also started issuing warnings to users possibly targeted by state-sponsored attacks. A story in New York Times had indicated that the federal department found out about those attacks

because of the alert system.

Reflecting on the stalled India-Pakistan bilateral series, the 49-year-old left-hander insisted that his country’s cricket can survive without playing against India. Akram admitted that the Indian Government had taken a lot of time to decide on the series but added that he still remains hopeful about the series taking place in the near future.

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has been banned from bowl-ing for 12 months by the International Cricket Council after undergo-ing testing on his action. It is the second ban for the 34-year-old, whose off-spin bowling is only used on a part-time ba-sis by West Indies. He was reported for an ille-gal action following the first test defeat against Sri Lanka in October and had testing at the ICC accredited testing centre in Brisbane earlier this month. “The assessment revealed that Samuels’ elbow extension ex-ceeded 15 degrees while bowling and, thus, he em-ployed an illegal bowl-ing action,” the world governing body said in a statement. “As this re-port constitutes the play-

natural heritage of the Northeast in the form of a rhino calf. “With tra-ditional and sporty cos-tumes, Tikhor would be playing all games and welcoming every new idea in sports,”he said. The highly endangered one-horned rhinoceros is also the state animal of Assam. Tikhor inciden-tally is a popular charac-ter in Assamese folk lit-erature, who figures in a story called “Tikhor aru Chutibai”immortalized

by Sahityarathi Lakshmi-nath Bezbaroa, the doy-en of modern Assamese literature in“Burhi Aair Sadhu” – the first col-lection of Assamese folk stories published more than 100 years ago. Pune will be given the choice to pick the players first because they were the lowest bidders (nega-tive bids) to buy the new team for two years in the draft to be held at the Mumbai Cricket Associ-ation’s recereation cen-tre at the Bandra Kurla Complex.

Earlier, PCB chief Sha-haryar Khan had said that they had decided to give up on the series after failing to receive a necessary reply from the BCCI and is likely to make the announcement about the same on Mon-day. A memorandum of understanding (MoU)

BJP’s percentage of votes has dipped to 43.97 from 50.26 in the 2010 elec-tions. There is a similar role reversal in the 230 taluka panchayats, where Congress’s vote share of 46% is higher than BJP’s

Last month, Hardik had applied for bail before the court and his supporters had started preparations for the rally in Varanasi. ABPNS had also approached farm-ers’ leaders across the country, including those from Gujarat, Maha-rashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and Ut-tar Pradesh, to attend the event. It had also invited

Bihar Chief Minister Nit-ish Kumar to address the mahapanchyayat along with Patel. ABPNS na-tional executive member Sushil Kashyap said, “As the court is yet to grant bail to Hardik Patel, the party, in a meeting of its national executive in Delhi on December 10, had decided to postpone the mahapanchayat in Varanasi. A fresh date for the mahapanchayat will be decided only after Hardik is released. The mahapanchayat will defi-nitely happen whenever Hardik comes out of the jail.” Kashyap belongs to Varanasi and was pre-

paring for the mahapan-chayat there. He admitted that Varanasi was chosen as the venue for the ma-hapanchayat as it is the Lok Sabha constituency of the Prime Minister and “the best place to target him and give a message to the Centre on farmers’ issues”. “ABPNS work-ers had started to invite the masses and farmers in eastern UP for the ma-hapanchayat. But we had not formally applied for permission from the dis-trict administration for the mahapanchayat, as we were waiting for the court orders on Hardik’s bail plea,” Kashyap said. He added that ABPNS had invited Nitish Kumar “be-cause he had challenged Modi’s Gujarat model and defeated BJP with his own development model in the Bihar polls”. “Hardik has to tell the masses that Gujarat was developed by Patidars but they were not given credit,” he claimed.
