QUOTE OF THE

DAYCutting out the censor, The board is out of step with the times

With Udta Punjab, India’s tryst with censorship has reached a point where artistic and creative freedoms have to pass muster with both official and unofficial moral policing. The implications of this are far-reach-ing. The message that will go down to filmmakers, playwrights, artists, writers, and even ordinary citizens is that every word uttered, every sentence written, every scene painted, every film that is canned, or every book that is published, must be accompanied with extreme circumspection. Caution is, arguably, a reasonable at-titude, but where free expression becomes hostage to fear, we have much to worry about. Today, filmmakers are complaining that movies cannot be made by antic-ipating what the censor board would ultimately clear. We also have the unofficial censors — religious, cultur-al and political groups — who take offence to creative expression, and prevent film screenings, vandalise art exhibitions, and issue physical and verbal threats. If, tomorrow, artists decide to shelve projects for fear of tripping under the censor’s subjective, and shifting, standards, the culprit is the political leadership. The ground has shifted from the fundamental right to free speech to the enforcement of the reasonable restric-tions on free speech, both sanctioned by the Consti-tution. After the regional office of the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) sought 89 cuts in Udta Punjab, the revision committee has now reportedly sought that the “Punjab” in the title and all references to the state must be removed. For a film that claims to have realistically depicted Punjab’s drug problem, the charge that it will misguide young and impressionable minds is a strange and laughable proposition. Under Pahlaj Nihalani, the CBFC has taken upon itself the job of enforcing a social morality that attempts to arrest the onward drift towards greater political and cultural liberalism. With the internet emerging as the primary source of media distribution and with no scope for cen-soring internet content, such attempts at censorship are merely symbolic. With elections around the corner in Punjab, there is little doubt that political imperatives have governed the censoring of the film. It is no sur-prise that the Akali Dal has been vociferously protest-ing against the film, while its opponents, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, back the film’s release. The film’s co-producer, Anurag Kashyap, has not minced words by taking on the political establishment and the censor board. He said that those opposed to the film are “actually guilty of promoting drugs”, and equated the censor board’s dictatorial and oligarchic actions to the North Korean state.

“Pahlaj Nihlani’s statement makes it amply clear that he has stopped the film on BJP’s instructions, What else could one expect under Modi regime.” - delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tweeted statement came after

the CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani claimed that he has heard co-producer of udta Punjab - Anurag Kashyap - took money from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Indian cricket has re-cently been flooded with one question. A question every Indian fan debates about, a question ev-ery media house around the world is asking, a question every possible person at the Board of Cricket Control Cricket (BCCI) is probably try-ing to avoid: Is it time for the most successful Indi-an captain in history, Ma-hendra Singh Dhoni to step aside and hand over the baton to Virat Kohli? The Indian captaincy is one of the most covet-ed and high-profile jobs in the cricketing world. There are moments when you are worshipped and

Indian stars Saina Ne-hwal and Kidambi Sri-kanth registered compre-hensive wins to advance to the second round, while PV Sindhu suf-fered an opening round upset at the $750,000 Australian Badminton Open Superseries here on Wednesday. Apart from Srikanth, World No 37 Sameer Verma also ad-vanced to the next round but qualifier RMV Guru-saidutt failed to cross the first round hurdle. Sev-enth seed Saina dominat-ed the proceedings from the start as she thrashed local challenger Joy Lai 21-10, 21-14 in just 29 minutes. A player is often type-cast in cricket. Breaking that image isn’t easy for any individual. Ask KL Rahul and he will agree. Bracketed as a Test player before IPL-9, the Karna-taka batsman turned out to be one of the biggest finds of the season in the shortest format of the game. Having impressed with his solidity in Test cricket, Rahul translated his success in T20 cricket by scoring 397 runs in 14 games in the IPL, which earned him a spot in the India limited-overs team for Zimbabwe. “I spent time with Virat (Kohli) and AB (de Villiers) and asked them questions about what they thought I should do to improve my

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Por-tugal tower above their rivals and should ease into the knockout stag-es at Euro 2016, but the illustrious team cannot underestimate a blossom-ing Austria side. Ranked eighth in the world, Por-tugal cruised towards a sixth straight appearance at the finals -- in Group F against Austria, Hungary and Iceland -- by reeling

off seven straight qualify-ing wins after an opening defeat to Albania. But 12 years after the losing the final to Greece on home soil, Ronaldo’s hopes of landing an international title appear remote unless his supporting cast can deliver where they have failed in the past. Por-tugal lost on penalties to Spain in the semi-fi-nals at Euro 2012 and then crashed out in the group stage of the World

Cup in Brazil. Ronaldo, slowed by a knee inju-ry, was then a shadow of the player who won that year’s Ballon d’Or. “If he is so important in Madrid, just imag-ine he’s the same if not more so with Portugal,” coach Fernando Santos told Spanish sports daily Marca. “When you have a player who scores 50 or 60 goals a season, and can always score, they are vitally important.

If all cricketers dream of playing at Lord’s, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Pere-ra has more reason than most to hope he’s select-ed for Thursday’s third Test against England at the spiritual home of the game. The 25-year-old endured a potential-ly career-ending spell on the sidelines after he

was suspended from all cricket during Sri Lan-ka’s tour of New Zealand last December, when a laboratory in Qatar, ac-credited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), said he had produced a positive re-sult in an out-of-compe-tition test. Cricket South Africa (CSA) have overcome their initial hesitancy and confirmed on Wednesday that the third and final test of the tour of Aus-tralia will be a day-night fixture at Adelaide Oval starting on Nov. 24. The Proteas had been reluc-tant to be involved in a day-night match having

never played with a pink ball but with two warm-up matches under lights planned for the Octo-ber-November tour, CSA said they were now will-ing to play the fixture. “Following careful con-sideration and engage-ment with all our test players, and acknowledg-ing the need to exploit the potential of playing day-night test match cricket,

Despite a long Test season ahead, Rahul said his sole aim is to do well in the ODIs in Zim-babwe. “I’m not going to worry about Test matches. This is my first ODI se-ries with the Indian team, so I will focus on doing well there and figure out how I will be successful in

Zimbabwe. It will be defi-nitely challenging for the opening batsman and it’s a responsibility that I have enjoyed to go out there and give a solid start to my team,” he said. Rahul said he has always believed in sticking to the basics and would be doing just that in Zimbabwe, much like he did during the IPL. I did not have time to pre-pare for this IPL because I was coming back from an injury.

I am pleased to announce that we have agreed with Cricket Australia to pro-ceed with this fixture,” CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our Proteas were initial-ly hesitant to play such a key test match without previous experience and adequate preparation but after working through all their concerns and the possible options to pre-pare sufficiently, there is new-found excitement for this novel test match.” South Africa captain AB de Villiers added that the major concern for the players was having ade-quate preparation with a pink ball.

then there are moments, when you are cursed. There have been major burning issues regarding team selection and cap-taincy in Indian cricket before as well. One can easily refer to the Sourav Ganguly-Greg Chappel tiff or to the time when Yuvraj Singh was not selected for the Indian World Cup squad back in 2015. Yuvraj was play-

er-of-the-tournament in the 2011 World Cup and scored three consecu-tive first-class centuries against Haryana, Maha-rashtra and Saurashtra weeks before the 2015 World Cup squad was announced. Yet, that did not earn him a place in the squad. But, neither can match up to the hype the Kohli-Dhoni captain-cy issue is creating.

round. But it was curtains for World No.10 Sindhu, who lost to World No.40 Kim Hyo Min from South Korea 15-21, 19-21 after a 55-minute bat-tle. Youngster Tanvi Lad came back from a game down to sail into the sec-ond round. Tanvi set up a face-off with fourth-seed-ed Yihan Wang after reg-istering a brilliant 18-21, 21-14, 21-11 come-back win over qualifier Tif-fany Ho of Australia in 52 minutes. Other big names in the women’s

singles draw, Li Xuer-ui of China, Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and Chinese Taipei’s Tai Yzu Ying also moved into the second round. In men’s singles, World No.12 Sri-kanth took just 32 min-utes to register a 21-16, 21-12 comfortable win over World No. 11 NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong. But Verma had a tough contest against In-donesia’s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa before winning 22-20, 15-21 21-15 in a 53-minute contest.

BJP leader Ram Mad-hav said that the Con-gress promotes just one “surname” and ignores the contribution of other leaders in the party, and hence, it is continuing to lose power in one state after another. Asked about the resignations of two senior Congress leaders Gurudas Kamat and Ajit Jogi, Madhav said that as a BJP mem-ber, he cannot comment on internal affairs of the Opposition party. “How-ever, in my individual

capacity, I criticise the Congress which con-siders only those with a particular surname (a reference to Gandhis) as their leader and does not recognise the contribu-tion of other leaders in the party.” Congress has received severe drubbing in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP General Secre-tary said that the party is losing power in one state after another because of this. RSS Sangh Sanchalak Dr. Jayenti Bhadeshiya said, “RSS leaders had not changed the dress but the Swamiji who is tak-ing care of the school had change the dress of lord Swaminarayan idol.” The uniform was reportedly given to the school by the RSS at the conclusion of the camp. Sunday was the
