THURSDAy, SEPTEMBER 17, 2015

QUOTE OF THE

DAYThe door is still not openIn the wake of Hardik Patel’s theatrics demanding reservation for the prosperous Patel community in Gujarat, there has been a concerted appeal for a re-view of the policy of affirmative action, based on the well-worn arguments that reservation has hardened caste identities; that discrimination against Dalits is a thing of the past; that reservation is eroding efficien-cy in administration; that Dalits are now empowered and have a sizeable share of government posts, etc. Convoluted, impractical methods to recalibrate the reservation calculus are being trotted out. Baijayant Panda, a BJD Lok Sabha MP from Odisha, invoked a 2013 analysis by The Economist on the debatable benefits of reservation to endorse the view that mak-ing government service representative rather than capable “makes it hard to remove the dysfunction-al or corrupt”, thereby smearing the beneficiaries of reservation with the most odious attributes. The unmistakable subtext is that reservations must be scrapped. Casteism in this country has never needed props and it is a mistake to blame the reservation policy for strengthening caste identity. Caste con-sciousness is integral to our everyday lives; we are all scarred by it. So ingrained is caste in our collec-tive psyche that even a Dalit who converts to Chris-tianity or Sikhism or Islam is hobbled by her social origins. An irrational belief in Dalit inferiority is embedded in our culture. Recognising the social ex-clusion and oppression faced by Dalits, our founding fathers ensured that the Constitution had provisions such as Article 46, which says: “The state shall pro-mote with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections… and in particular of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and shall protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation.” More than six decades later, we are nowhere near fulfilling this pledge. For purveyors of the myth that discrimination against Dalits is no longer a social problem — the “look at Mayawati” argument — reports from the last few days must be discomfiting. Dalit families in Yellaram village in Telangana recently allegedly faced a social boycott because some of them had been in the vicinity of two temples. As retribution, they were not offered work and their children were denied milk. In another incident in Karnataka, upper castes reportedly im-posed a penalty of Rs 1,000 on four Dalit women for entering a temple. According to home ministry estimates, thousands of atrocities against Dalits are committed every year. In 2013, there were 39,408 registered cases of atrocities against SC/ STs. Many more went unreported.

It’s a story that we’ve be-come more than slightly accustomed to reading over the last couple of weeks. Yet another ru-moured Bigg Boss 9 pos-sible has denied being on the reality show leaving the number of confirmed contestants on the new season at exactly zero. The latest Bigg Boss no-show is adult actress Mia Khalifa who has not only rubbished the rumours but also said that she’s never going set foot in India. Last week, reports that the Lebanese-Amer-

ican star of X-rated films would do a Sunny Leone and appear in the new sea-son of Bigg Boss caused a ripple of excitement. Now, 22-yeaar-old Mia can be crossed off the list as well, along with ac-tress Shweta Basu Prasad, producer Uday Chopra, controversial godwoman Radhe Maa and comedi-an Gaurav Gera. The only person who has so far admitted to having been approached by Bigg Boss producers is Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, whose film MSG - 2: The Messenger releases this Friday.

Bigg Boss Season 5 con-testant Pooja Missra was caught in a controversy when her video of beat-ing and abusing some hotel staff went viral on social media. As ap-pears in the video, the ac-

What’s more strange is the way she linked Sona with the incident. He plays a house hus-band in “Ki and Ka” op-posite Kareena Kapoor Khan and actor Arjun Ka-poor says he complete-ly endorses the idea of a spouse supporting his ambitious wife. “There is nothing wrong being a house husband and I do believe there is some-thing right about it. their own reasons and un-derstandings…,” Arjun told PTI in an interview. Directed by R Balki of “Cheeni Kum” fame, the Delhi-set relationship saga deals with the fine nuances of a relationship between a house husband and his ambitious wife. Arjun, 30, who is current-ly shooting for the film in the capital, said the city plays an important role in the unique love story. “The film is based in Del-hi. So, it’s an important aspect. It will be unique and quirky in typical

The film is not just about the song, dance and fun,” said the actor, who has shot the film in Hauz Khas, India Gate and Pu-rana Qila. The “Tevar” star feels romance is one such genre in Bollywood which has been re-invent-ed frequently with time and “Bobby”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Jab We Met” are the best ex-amples of this changing phase.

talking about them be-cause I am comfortable with whatever they do.” Krishna also spoke to a Bollywood webiste and said the photoshoot was just for fun. “It was ba-sically just a photoshoot that my best-friend and I did for fun in my bedroom with nobody to share the experience with except ourselves. My friend is a photographer who is building her portfolio to further her career. The two of us like to have fun with the camera and just shoot whatever the mood of the moment…And since I like to put up aesthetic pictures for my private Instagram page it’s a win-win situation for both my photogra-pher friend and me. As simple as that!” she said.

Facebook has revealed that it is planning to pub-licly test a dislike button. According to the Verge, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook said during a public Q&A session that “People have asked about the ‘Dislike’ button for many years and today is a special day, because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it”. Mark Zuckerberg also says that Facebook’s goal is to implement the button in a way that makes it a tool to ‘express empathy’, to ‘Dislike’ a sad moment that a friend shared than a way to hurt someone. Mark Zuckerberg further says that they do not want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. That does not seem like the kind of community that they want to create, the users do not want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to them in their day and have someone down-vote it.

Disney working on Linux-based LEDs that ‘talk’ to each other - Disney researchers are working on a new project called Linux Light Bulb that com-municates data using visible light. The researchers have created networking technology that makes it possible for LED lights not only to communicate with each other, but to do so in a way that is com-patible with the internet and its technical protocols. These advances could give Visible Light Commu-nication (VLC) an important role in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) ? the idea that objects can communicate with each other and share informa-tion to create smart environments, according to Stefan Mangold, Head of Disney Research?s wire-less research group. The researchers used off-the-shelf LED light bulbs that they modified so that they could send and receive visible light signals. These modifications included a VLC controller module with the protocol software, a System-on-a-Chip running the Linux operating system and an additional power supply for the added electronics.

Cricket icon Sachin Ten-dulkar, who co-owns In-dian Super League (ISL) franchise Kerala Blast-ers, said on Wednesday that he has a hugely tal-ented side. The Blasters were impressive during the inaugural ISL sea-son last year, eventual-ly finishing runners-up. The team’s jersey was unveiled in the presence of Chief Minister Oom-men Chandy and the of-ficials of the Muthoot Pappachan Group, who continues to be the prin-cipal sponsors for the sec-ond year in succession.

After unveiling the yel-low-coloured team jersey, Tendulkar said he always believed in the colour yellow. The entire Kochi Blasters team was also presented on the stage. “In the inaugural season last year, none of us knew when we played how it would go. As the games began and went forward, we had the full confidence that we could fill any sta-dium,” said Tendulkar. “Slowly we started to win the hearts of people be-cause of the way we car-ried forward. We have a hugely talented side and I have no doubt that this season our confidence levels are high after the

training and the results will show.” “Please con-tinue to support and love us. We are going to give our best and this time we are going to better our performance and we will continue to get better,” added Tendulkar who arrived here on Wednes-day afternoon and left immediately after the event. Chandy thanked Tendulkar for holding Kerala in high esteem. “We are also indebted to him as he was the good-will ambassador for the National Games that was held here early this year and also for his role in the Kerala Blasters,” said Chandy.

India ‘A’ won their first one-day match against Bangladesh ‘A’ by 96 runs in Bangalore on Wednesday. After post-ing 322 /7 on the board, India ‘A’ bowlers, led by five-wicket haul by Gur-keerat Mann, bowled out Bangladesh for 226. The home side posted 322/7 batting first with opener Mayank Agarwal getting a half-century up the or-der. A middle-order col-

lapse saw India ‘A’ slump to 125/5 before Sanju Samson (73) and Mann (65) shared a 102-run stand for the sixth wicket. Mann was LBW by Arafat Sunny but new batsman Rishi Dahwan smashed a 34-ball 56 to lift team’s score to 322/7. Chasing the score, the visitors were 34/3 with pacer Arvind Sreenath removing Ban-gladesh top-order. Dha-wan then picked up two wickets as first change

bowler to reduce Bangla-desh to 84/5. Litton Das and Nasir Hossain built a 120-run partnership to save some pride for their team but once Hossain was removed by Mann, no Bangladesh batsmen showed any fight and the team was all out for 226. Mann picked up the last five wickets as Bangla-desh lost those wickets for just 20 runs. Mann fin-ished with figures of 5/29 in his 7.3 overs.

India football coach Ste-phen Constantine might have expressed issues with the timing of the 2015 SAFF Cup but All India Football Federation (AIFF) General Secre-tary Kushal Das has dis-missed the notion, stat-ing how the Briton was part of the entire process and that there is no issue as far as the scheduling goes. Following the In-dia v Nepal international friendly in August, Con-stantine had said that he was not looking forward to this year’s SAFF Cup draw because he had concerns regarding the timing of the biennial event. His argument was that since the Indian Su-per League will end on December 20, it would mean he will not be able to select those players

who make it to the semis of the competition, for the SAFF Cup. Howev-er, on Wednesday, speak-ing to TOI Sports, Das said: “Mr. Constantine was part of the entire scheduling process and was consulted on what will be the ideal window for the tournament. The tournament was sup-posed to take place by December this year. So there’s no problem at all.” While speaking to the media, when asked

what the Indian football team could learn from a rapidly improving Af-ghanistan - who come into the tournament as the defending champi-ons - Das said: “Afghan-istan players are able to regularly play in Europe (German 2nd and 3rd divisions) which Indian players cannot. So that helps them a lot. Certain things vary from country to country. But full cred-it to them for putting up strong performances.”

Two minutes later, it was 1-0 in favour of FC Goa with Jofre finding the back of the net through a deflected free-kick. The ISL side kept up the ante but Narayan Das was deemed to have fouled an Al Shabab player inside the box, and as a result of the converted penalty

both teams walked into the lemon break with the scoreline reading 1-1. Crossing over, it was more of a battle for au-thority at the center of the park despite a couple of efforts made by FC Goa to move ahead. The BJP government is in a fix as it prepares the reply to a notice by the Supreme Court which stayed the munic-ipal elections on techni-cal grounds earlier this month. The government could have file a review plea in the apex court, but it chose to reply to the notice, weighing the political fallout of hold-ing local body at a time when BJP is facing an-ger of the Patidar com-munity over OBC quota demand. The elections to seven municipal corpora-tions, district and taluka panchayats are due soon. The government, which is likely to file its reply in a day or two, stands suf-ficiently warned by the

recent incidents of polit-ical leaders being chased out of public events, and even signboards coming up in Patidar neighbour-hoods, barring entry to politicians. The Patidars, so far, have been BJP’s most loyal votebank, and it cannot afford to ignore anger among the community members. Recently, BJP MLA from Unjha Narayan Patel sat on a fast to protest al-leged police atrocities on the Patidars during the August 25 violence, and even former chief minis-ter Keshubhai Patel did not hesitate to “bless” Hardik Patel hours be-fore the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti leader was to meet Chief Min-ister Anandiben Patel on Monday.

In what could be just a tip of the iceberg, a shocking case of alleged theft and sale of medicines meant for patients has come to light at UN Mehta In-stitute Of Cardiology & Research Centre. The al-leged theft was reported by the son of a 75-year-old patient who was ad-mitted to the hospital with cardiac problems and lung infection. The accused nurses are likely to be suspended or ter-minated if the hospital’s inquiry committee finds them guilty. Ramilaben Pandya, 75, was admitted to the hospital on August 26 with lung infection. On Monday, her son Ak-shay Pandya bought med-icines worth Rs 2,500

from a nearby pharmacy and handed them over to the nurses of the ward. The same afternoon, he received a call from the owner of the medical store who informed him that a nurse had come to sell the medicines he had bought in the morning. Appalled by such insensitive and unethical behaviour, Ak-shay submitted a written complaint to the hospi-tal authorities against the nurses. “On September 14, around 8.30 am, we were given a prescrip-tion for medicines that we purchased from Dev Chemists. We placed it on the table kept near the patient’s bed as has been the routine. We were told to leave the room. Around 9.30 am, we were asked to

hand over the medicines but found them missing from the table. We told the nursing staff that we had placed the medicines on the table. We, along with the staff, immediate-ly launched a search for the missing medicines but they had vanished with-out a trace. We also called up my sister-in-law who was the one to place the medicines on the table. Finally, we had to pur-chase the medicines from the same store at 10.30 am,” stated Sadhana Pan-dya, the patient’s relative, in a detailed complaint to hospital authorities. The complaint further stated that around 2 pm, two nurses were trying to re-turn unused medicines to a medical store.

Babubhai Patel, a re-tired government ser-vant arrived early at the bank in his village of Kherol in North Gujarat today, ready to make a withdrawal. Chief Minister Anandi-ben Patel has said that the state cannot rework its policy to create room for the Patels among the castes that benefit from affirmative action.
