QUOTE OF THE

DAYSuperpower’s superbombSeventy years after the United States waged what to this day remains the only instance of nuclear warfare in history, Americans persist in subscrib-ing to the view that the atomic bombings of Hi-roshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, whatever the moral perils of such an undertaking, were jus-tified by exceptional circumstances. It is taken as an unimpeachable fact that the nuclear attacks on the two Japanese cities saved lives; on this argu-ment, the invasion of Japan would have energised its fanatic residents to a renewed defence of their country, and the war might have stretched out for several more months, or even longer. The propo-nents of this view have advanced an apparently noble kind of moral calculus, whereby the atomic bombings not only saved American lives but the lives of their very antagonists, since a protract-ed war would have decimated what remained of young Japanese men. If this argument be stretched a bit further, the US was animated not merely by the desire to preserve the lives of its own youth but by reverence for all human life. Further, Ja-pan’s unconditional surrender, which the US had insisted on as the condition for bringing hostili-ties to an end, is described by those who justify the bombing as having been wholly precipitated by the picture of utter devastation unleashed upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki. An obdurate country, slavishly holding itself in subjection to the writ of the emperor, had no other recourse. It is also characteristic of the US that, on every anniversary of the bombing, a supposed “debate” is thought to take place among Americans vigorously argu-ing in support of, or in opposition to, the atomic bombings. Certainly, some arguments resonate more strongly now than they did in 1945 or in the years immediately thereafter. The end of the war had brought forth a new adversary in the Sovi-et Union, one reason among others why German war criminals tried at Nuremberg were, barring the first set of some 20-odd Nazis who had oc-cupied the highest positions in the Third Reich, handed down insignificant prison terms when they were not simply acquitted. If a demonstration had to be furnished to Stalin of the immense and un-matched military prowess of the US, nothing was calculated to achieve that effect as much as a new super-bomb that was immeasurably greater than anything witnessed thus far. If war-time rape of enemy women is merely the way in which rapists convey messages to enemy men, the nuked cit-ies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, by this reckoning, were intended to show to an emergent world pow-er under the dictatorship of Stalin the probable consequences of embracing the enmity of the US.

‘Srimanthudu’ review: Mahesh Babu shines in the film despite a predictable plot

Like Albert Camus’s pro-tagonist in ‘The Outsider’, Harsha (Mahesh Babu) doesn’t quite understand himself in ‘Srimanthu-du’. Forthrightly he tells his father that he’d like to earn some respect which means he’s not interest-ed in what his family has earned in terms of wealth / stature. In wanting to capture the role of an out-sider, Mahesh stands with his hands hanging in the air most of the time, and

unbeknownst to himself, wears a smile. He’s also a true Superstar when it comes to the way he car-ries himself; be it a suit or a lungi, he knows what works. A chance meeting with Charuseela (Shruti Haasan) makes him ac-cept himself and urges him to go to Devarako-ta, a village ruled by a bunch of goons. One of the bosses happens to be a khadi-clad politician or-dering his men from New Delhi to look after the burgeoning empire. Just

before the appearance of the interval board on the screen, everything falls into place. I knew what Harsha would achieve by the end of the film, I knew the fate of Mukesh Rishi and Sampath Raj (the money-eyed broth-ers who unhesitatingly bury whistleblowers); still I was sure that Ko-ratala Siva wouldn’t al-low mediocrity seep into the narrative. But the film unnecessarily eats up around fifteen minutes in the climax.

Asked how does she rate the modernisation of bridal wear in terms of its silhouettes and fabrics, Sonam said, “Yes it’s a good change. Since we have so many weddings outside India, the bridal wardrobe is also chang-ing according to the cli-

mate condition. People also want to do some-thing different for their wedding.” The actress will be next seen in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which will see her teaming up with Saawariya co-star Salman Khan, and the bi-opic on braveheart Indi-an flight attendant Neerja Bhanot. “I will not speak anything about my films right now,” she said.

‘Dabangg’ star regard-ing her films. “I do take his advise as he knows the best. He knows what works, he understands the audience well. He also told me that whoso-ever’s advice I take, ulti-mately final decision has to be mine,” Jacqueline said. The ‘Roy’ star said after ‘Kick’ she signed three films this year and is looking forward to shoot five movies next year. “After ‘Kick’, this year I did three films. Next year I will be hope-fully shooting five films. ‘Kick’ has taken me where I had wished to be.. It is because ‘Kick’ happened, I got the op-portunity to work every day,” she said. ‘Kick’ producer Sajid Nadiad-wala and Salman would be teaming up again for the sequel ‘Kick 2’ but without Jacqueline. “I would miss being part of ‘Kick 2’. But the great part is I was part of the first project and no one can take that away from me,” the 29-year-old actress said. Jacque-line will be seen next in ‘Bangistan’, which hit the screens today along-side Riteish Deshmukh and Pulkit Samrat, and opposite Akshay Ku-mar in Karan Malhotra’s ‘Brothers’.

Google has an innovative way of getting millions of users to focus on an event, occasion or festival. It’s the best way to celebrate the day and it’s sig-nificance in history through effective visual com-munication. Today, the Google Doodle celebrated the 229th anniversary of the Mont Blanc ascent. Compared to the several Doodles done by Google so far, today’s Doodle is rather plain and simple. But before we could write it off, we wondered what all the hype was about. According to Google, “Capped by snow and shrouded in mist sits Mont Blanc, the highest point in the Alps. Its summit, forever white, towers 15,000+ feet above Europe’s sea level. Lord Byron called it “the monarch of mountains.” And for centuries, no human had ever reached its peak. Until 1786. That year, armed only with alpenstocks and measuring equipment (the trek was for scientific purposes), Frenchmen Michel Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat set foot at the top. Now, 229 years later, thousands of hopeful hikers annually descend upon the Alpine towns of Chamonix, Saint-Gervais, and Courmayeur to recreate this exceptional feat, and take in this incredible view.

Fast bowler Ishant Shar-ma who has been sin-gle-handedly responsible for making India lose several matches over the years wrecked havoc in Colombo against the Sri Lankan Board Pres-ident XI’s camp, as he claimed 5 wickets in his opening spell of 4 overs. Fans who were present to witness Ishant’s fiery spell of bowling rubbed their eyes and dismissed his entire performance as a dream. Even Ishant Sharma couldn’t believe that he had bowled so well. He apologized pro-fusely for his unbeliev-able spell and said, “I have betrayed the trust of my fans who are so used to seeing me give away matches to oppo-sition teams on a silver platter. It is quite weird to see everyone praising me than shouting slogans in my names, which is usually the norm. This is not the kind of legacy I want to leave behind and I will go back to working hard in the nets so that I can plunder runs again.” Fans who had grown up watching Ishant getting hit all over the park were feeling distraught after his latest bravado. “Is-hant bowling so well in reality is akin to a gov-ernment employee doing his work without slack-

Captain Usman Khawa-ja and his opening part-ner Joe Burns smashed scintillating centuries as Australia A thrashed a hapless India A by a massive 119 runs in the second tri-series cricket match in Chennai on Fri-day. Khawaja and Burns continued their top form as they sent the Indian bowlers to a leatherhunt in their knocks of 100 and 154 respectively, sharing 239 runs from 35.5 overs in their open-ing stand, to help Aus-tralia A post a mammoth 334 for 4 after electing to bat at the M A Chid-ambaram Stadium here. India A would look to get their act right in all departments of the game and open their account when they lock horns with South Africa A in the home team’s second tri-series cricket match on Sunday. Playing their first match of the series on Friday, India A were soundly thrashed by Aus-tralia A at the MA Chid-ambaram Stadium. The 119-run defeat notwith-standing, coach Rahul Dravid is confident of a turnaround. But for that to happen, the Indians will have to execute their

plans better. The Indian medium pacers -- Dhaw-al Kulkarini and Sandeep Sharma -- did not give enough width to the Aus-tralian opening batsmen Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns initially but, as they settled down, the two batsmen carted the bowlers, especially the spinners, to hit 15 sixes in the innings while put-ting on 239 runs. At the net sessions on Saturday, Dravid was seen spend-ing a lot of time with the players and urged the bowlers to bowl wick-et to wicket. With the pitch playing slow, his

message to the batsmen was to play a little late and stick around in the middle. Unlike the game against the Australians, it will be vital for the Indian batsmen to build partner-ships in order to put up a big total. While skip-per Unmukt Chand and Kedar Jadhav posted 50-plus scores, others like Mayank Agarwal, Man-ish Tiwary and Karun Nair failed to impress getting out for low scores against Australia A. They will have to come up with an improved performance against the Proteas on Sunday.

Ahead of Team India’s selection for tour of Zim-babwe, the Indian crick-et team selectors had to drop their plans to name Suresh Raina as the lead-er of the team. It is learnt that the selectors had to name Rahane as Team India skipper after Suresh Raina’s name popped up in Lalit Modi’s email to ICC, alleging the Chennai Super Kings trio of Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo accepting favours from a real estate tycoon. According to a report in ‘The Indian Ex-press’, following the alle-gations from Lalit Modi, the BCCI top brass was not in favour of Raina leading the ODI side in absence of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Hence, in a last-minute arrangement Mumbai-batsman Ajink-ya Rahane was named skipper for India’s series against Zimbabwe. Con-troversial former IPL

ing or asking for a bribe. It obviously happened in a dream and Christo-pher Nolan should in-clude this in Inception’s sequel because this will stun everyone beyond belief,” an Ishant Shar-ma fan who had even copied his hairstyle said. This brilliant display of bowling by Ishant has made people believe that nothing is impossi-ble. Sonia Gandhi could

hardly contain her ex-citement and said, “If he can produce a master spell after years of get-ting whacked all over the ground, maybe there is hope for the Congress party too. There is still a chance that Rahul Gand-hi might become a vi-sionary leader, or may-be I am just being too optimistic. There is no way Rahul can amount to anything in this life.”

Commissioner Lalit Modi had alleged that two lead-ing Indian cricketers and a West Indian player had been bribed by an Indian real estate tycoon, who is also a bookmaker. He told Richardson that he could pass the same to the anti-corruption and secu-rity unit of the ICC if he thought so fit. Modi had stated that he had been informed by “reliable sources” that the tycoon had paid in cash and kind to the three players. He concluded by saying that

“I hope this is not true but if true it could mean more are involved.” “The ICC confirms that Mr Mo-di’s confidential e-mail, which was received in June 2013, and which has recently been published on Twitter, was provided to the ACSU at the time. The ACSU handled that information in accor-dance with its standard operating procedures, which included sharing it with the BCCI’s anti-cor-ruption unit,” said the ICC statement.

as their bowlers were first steamrolled by Kha-waja and Burns during the Australia A innings and then the home team batsmen fell far short of reaching the stiff tar-get of 335 as they were bundled out for just 215 in 42.3 overs. The Aus-tralians maintained their wicket to wicket bowling and the impatient Indian batsmen paid the price of chasing short-pitched deliveries. The wicket

appeared to offer good bounce throughout the day but the hosts bats-men were to be blamed for failing to make a mark as the majority of them were out due to wrong shot selections. The bowling frailties of the home side were ex-posed badly as Khawaja and Burns made a mince-meat of them, scoring runs almost at will and denying the Indians any success till the 36th over.

Is the Gujarat govern-ment’s notification for compulsory voting a draft notification or final notifi-cation? It is the final noti-fication. We are not going to invite suggestions and objection. What is the ra-tionale of making voting mandatory? What does state government want to achieve by this law? The objective is to make de-mocracy mature. Every citizen has the right to vote. But in every elec-tion, 40 per cent to 50 per cent citizens do not exer-cise their franchise and later complain about their representatives. They should exercise their fran-chise at appropriate time. Franchise is a powerful right in democracy and they should use it. They should shoulder their re-sponsibility. Principally, compulsory voting will strengthen democracy. Where did the idea of making the voting com-

pulsory come from? Does the government hope to improve voters’ turnout in local body elections by this law? The voting per-centage does remain low in local body elections. We want to ensure 100 per cent turnout. This is the reason we have enact-ed a law. To bring about the law, we had passed the Bill way back in 2009. But we started giving it a serious thought over the last two years. There are 12 provisions in the Gu-jarat Local Authorities (Amendment) Act, 2009, exempting people from compulsory voting. Do you think these exemp-tions defeat the purpose of compulsory voting? Our government is prac-tical. The government knows very well that no-nagenarians, octogenar-ians or the elderly who are 75-year-old proba-bly cannot come out and vote. If somebody is ill or in hospital, he may not go for voting. If a student is
