QUOTE OF THE

DAY

Editors’ Picks

The rise and fall of ex-IPL czar Lalit ModiThough tough to imagine, back in the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) lived in a cluttered two BHK apartment. Its South Mumbai ad-dress might have impressed those who correspond-ed with it, but not the postman who climbed those dark, dingy stairs leading to the file-filled rooms with peeling walls. Typical of those wily kinds with old money, they were low-key and conserva-tive. And then Lalit Modi came along. He got the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the Interna-tional Management Group and subsequently, more worrying acronyms — ED, CBI — would follow. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves in this story of how cricket couldn’t handle money and fame. Those were interesting times, the early days of Modi. The old-timers hated him. He was seen as an upstart. His Twenty20 venture bred mistrust. The maidan cricketers-turned-administrators in safari suits were slowly getting replaced by Armani-clad MBAs. The World Cup veterans of 1987 and 1996 — the age-ing administrators who had greased palms, sought countless permissions from governments, worked on shoestring budgets from cubby holes to success-fully host cricket’s biggest tournament — were seen as misfits in Modi’s project, IPL season one. They sulked silently. When they spoke, they bad-mouthed Modi. But the whispers would die soon as the IPL brought money, serious money. Franchise teams got sold for $725 million, and the television deal was worth $1 billion. Not far from its old modest abode, the BCCI was now housed in a sprawling building next to the Wankhede Stadium, called Cricket Cen-tre. When IPL stakeholders would meet Modi at the new headquarters, Bentleys, Mercedes and Rolls Royces sat in the parking area. The team owners had demands, some old, some new. While asking for passes for their celebrity friends and parking tickets for their VIP friends, they would casually inquire if the stadium had a helipad. Many would fly in from SoBo and be air-dropped at the training ground at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to see the Rajas-than Royals win IPL 1. Cricket’s good old political takeover, which seemed unshakeably permanent for eternity and beyond, was now threatened by a corpo-rate coup. Power equations, rules, culture and even the BCCI constitution — nothing was untouched by change. Cricket was in a tearing hurry, thanks to the Twenty20 format. The aesthetics of the game were sacrificed on the field. In the BCCI’s corridors, due diligence and institutional ethics were alien words. There was no time to sit and brood. It was time to make quick millions, virtually everyday. Even Mo-di-baiters were enjoying the new perks. They had plush offices and revised travel allowance/ dearness allowance at the end of business-class travel.

We have taken inspiration from the locals — how they dress, how they talk, the kind of tattoos they have, etc. In the film, Ak-shay has a Jesus tattoo on his arm and a cross on his wrist. a physics teacher, he looks like an ordinary man. But when he takes his shirt off, his tattoos depict a story of a vio-lent, turbulent and trau-matic past,” Karan adds. SPORTS ROUNDUPWe need to improve our conversion rate: Sardar Singh

Agency | antwerp

India captain Sardar Singh said his team must improve on its conversion rate ahead of their Hockey World League Semifinal opener on Saturday. “Till now, everything is going fine and we have achieved satisfactory results in our training sessions and practice matches. It is unfortunate that we lost to Belgium in our prac-tice match but we have learnt many things about our strategies from that match, which will help us.

We are now focussing on our finishing and convert-ing our attacks in goals,” said Sardar. “With the ad-dition of new and young players, the team com-bination becomes more flexible, which is helping us to create more options in drawing new strate-gies. The weather is very cool here and best suited to playing hockey. We are looking forward to the first match against France,” he added. The women take on Belgium in their open-ing match. Speaking post

a practice session, captain Ritu Rani said: “The tour-nament is very important for our team. After the Incheon Asian Games, we have been preparing for this tournament and we have tried out various new strategies as well as team combinations in the Hawke’s Bay Cup and our preparatory camps and practice matches. In the match against Japan, we have learnt new aspects of our team combinations and we are working on our mistakes.

India vs Bangladesh: Dhoni’s back as focus switches to ODIs after rain-hit Test and gruelling IPL

It will be a fresh begin-ning for a full-strength In-dia in limited overs crick-et after the World Cup semifinal exit as they face a buoyant Bangladesh, who have more to gain then their famed neigh-bours, in the three-match ODI series starting on 18 June. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back at the helm, along with six other ODI specialists to take on a side that made the cricket world sit up and take notice by reach-ing the 2015 World Cup quarterfinals, where they were knocked out by an

in-form Indian side. The series is a platform for the hosts to exact revenge for the World Cup defeat, which had turned ugly after the then ICC Pres-ident Mustafa Kamal of Bangladesh accused the umpires of favouring In-dia. As far as the Indian team is concerned, even a 3-0 result against the hosts will not be enough for the second-placed side to claim the number one spot in the ICC rank-ings, while a favourable outcome for the home team will boost its qual-ifying chances for the 2017 Champions Trophy.

Sergio Aguero scored early in the second half to give Argentina an import-ant 1-0 win over defend-ing champion Uruguay in the Copa America on Tuesday, moving the ti-tle-favorites into strong position to advance past the group stage of the South American tour-

nament. Aguero scored the winner with a diving header in the 56th min-ute, leaving Argentina in first place of Group B along with Paraguay, which earlier Tuesday de-feated Jamaica 1-0. Both teams have four points from two matches. Uru-guay has three points and Jamaica has zero. A draw against Jamaica on Sat-

urday will be enough to secure Argentina a spot in the tournament’s quarter-finals. Uruguay will need to beat Paraguay on the same day to guarantee a place in the next round and keep its title de-fense alive. The top two teams in each of the three groups advance, plus the two-best third-place fin-ishers.

Anish Giri of Holland was the other big winner on the open-ing day at the expense of Alexander Grischuk of

Russia. Playing white, Giri launched a fine king side attack and sacrificed a couple of pawns on the other flank to distract Grischuk. The Russian lost his queen for two pieces and the resulting position was child’s play for Giri. Maxime Vach-ier-Lagrave of France continued with his good form from the blitz tour-nament to beat Levon Aronian of Armenia. It was a tenacious defense by Aronian in a slightly worse position but the Frenchman was remorse-less as he carried out his plans to perfection.

There are a few monuments in state like, Patan, Modhera, Junagarh
