QUOTE OF THE

DAYEknath Khadse accused in land deal, Is the BJP not a corrupt party?

At a function last week to mark two years of his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the changes ushered in since the NDA came to power in May 2014 through good governance while promising to root out corruption. But the con-troversy involving a senior minister of the BJP in one of the largest states where the party is in power threatens to take some sheen off this claim. The case involves purchase of a three-acre plot near Pune by Maharashtra Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse’s wife, Mandakini, and son-in-law, Girish Chaud-hari, on April 27 this year for Rs 3.75 crore. The charge the minister is facing is that even while a case was pending in the high court, the land was sold to Khadse’s family and that the minister himself had held a meeting with officials of the state agency, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, and from his own department, on the compensation to be given to the original owner under the state Land Acquisition Act in the third week of March, weeks before the transaction, as a report in the En-glish daily Newspaper has revealed. Shockingly, Khadse has admitted to having convened the meet-ing while going on to defend himself saying that as long as the deal was legally sound, he and his family members were within their rights as private citizens to purchase the land. But the minister has erred, and gravely at that, in participating in a matter which has a material impact on his family’s interests — a clear conflict of interest. In most countries, this would have invited penalties and led to a course correction. Khadse is brazening it out but surely this should at-tract action from his party beyond just a rebuke. In-deed, he should be asked to quit. That’s because the minister, who is already facing multiple charges, did not even recuse himself or make his interests public in the interests of transparency — a virtue his party has been highlighting as an achievement in its two years in office. This comes on top of earlier cases of conflict of interest involving at least six ministers in the Maharashtra government — three of whom were forced to quit their positions on the boards of private firms after a report published in this newspa-per in March this year. The callous attitude on conflict of interest issues featuring politicians, civil servants and corporate India is worrying. India currently has a model code of conduct which says that any minister within two months of assuming office should sever all connection with the conduct and management of any business in which he previously had an interest.

“Over 2,000 people have reported to have been infected with hIV while getting blood transfusion in the past 17 months in the country,” - NACO on Wednesday said, refuting reports, based on its RTI reply,

Is Kareena Kapoor Khan pregnant?

Well well! Rumours and speculations about Kare-ena Kapoor Khan being pregnant have been do-ing the rounds for quite some time now. And they might just turn out to be true! However, Bebo tried putting an end to all the speculations and rub-bished such gossips last month but all in vain. The rumours seem to have been surfacing yet again. According to Spotboye.com, the Jab We Met ac-tress is likely to be three and a half months preg-

There hasn’t been any official confirma-tion regarding the same from any member of the family as none of them chose to respond on be-ing contacted. If the supposed rumours turn out to be true, Kareena will soon be embracing motherhood in all its glo-ry. Meanwhile, watch out this space for more!

Former England captain Ian Botham has said that the current Three Lions skipper Alastair Cook has enough time at his disposal to challenge Sachin Tendulkar’s re-cord. On Monday, Cook became the youngest to join the 10, 000 runs club in the nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street. Cook needed five runs in the England’s second innings to reach to milestone. While he is nowhere near Tendulkar’s all-time mark of 15921 runs, Botham thought Cook was the man to chase the mammoth record. “I

Mystery surrounds the sudden departure of Pa-kistan’s banned Test leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria and his family to India although his brother claims they have gone to perform some religious rituals. Kaneria, his wife, children and his mother flew out to India on Sun-day night and are present-ly said to be in Kochi but speculations are rampant

that the banned player might have gone to India to seek a livelihood and settle down there. “My family is in India to per-form some religious ritu-als which will take around 10-days. Our return dates are not confirmed as yet,” Kaneria told a television channel from India. how long he wants to play for,” Botham said. The former great may have a case. Tendulkar breached the 10,000 run barrier when he was 31 years and 10 months old. Speculations have been rife over the real purpose of the visit to India as Danish Kane-ria had earlier this year reportedly said he would have got more justice in India being a Hindu by faith. Fed up with the non-cooperation of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Danish had caused an up-roar in Pakistani cricket circles when he said that if he had not been a Hin-du his case would have been handled differently by the cricket board. The leg-spinner was also dis-appointed when he got no response to a letter he wrote to Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif in early April about his case.

Venus Williams was un-able to join her sister in the French Open quar-terfinals, failing in a bid to get back to that stage at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament for the first time in a decade. Fi-nally back on court after her fourth-round match was postponed twice because of rain, the No. 9-seeded Williams lost to No. 8 Timea Bac-sinszky of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday. Williams, a seven-time

major champion, start-ed well enough, taking a 2-0 lead before dropping eight games in a row. She managed to produce only six winners in all, while committing 24 unforced errors. Williams was the runner-up to young-er sibling Serena at Ro-land Garros in 2002, but her most recent trip to the quarterfinals in Paris came all the way back in 2006. Wasting no time at all after waiting two days to play, defending cham-pion Serena moved clos-er to her record-equaling

22nd Grand Slam title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over 18th-seeded Eli-na Svitolina of Ukraine in only 62 minutes. The match originally was scheduled for Monday, but showers forced can-cellation of an entire day of play at Roland Garros for the first time in 16 years. Then, on Tuesday, more rain allowed for a total of only 2 hours of play around the grounds, and all fourth-round matches on the top half of the women’s draw were pushed back again.

Gafa dam on Ghelo River near Jasdan, western Gu-jarat, has allowed farmers to grow crops round-the-year and increase their earnings. The income of about 158 households have nearly tripled after a dam on the Ghelo river near Jasdan, Rajkot dis-trict, helped irrigate over 221 ha of land. Reliance Foundation facilitated the construction of the Gafa dam near Jasdan town, Rajkot district, in 2014. With a total water har-vesting capacity of more than 5.5 lakh cubic metres of water, the dam ensures availability of water round the year available to ir-rigate 64 ha of land, thus benefitting 158 farmers who, on an average, own 1 acre* of land each. Reliance Foundation builds Gafa dam in Gujarat; income of farmers trebles

the dam has made a sig-nificant difference to the lives of the poor farm-ers and their families in the nearby villages of Sompipliya [population 2462/households 434] and Fuljhar [population 2471/households 428]. The impact of the dam can be gauged from the fact that even though Jas-dan received just half its average rainfall last year, crop production increased

by 60%. The availability of water throughout the year enabled the farmers to now grow Rabi and Zaid crops, in addition to the regular Kharif crops, thus increasing their an-nual farm income from Rs 54,000 to Rs 1,50,000. The dam has also facilitat-ed non-agricultural liveli-hood activities including animal husbandry. Water in the dam serves a source of drinking water for the

wildlife in the adjoining Hingorgarh sanctuary, even when there was a drought. The variety of flora has increased ever since the Gafa dam came up. An existing dam on the Gafa Stream (Ghelo river), constructed years ago by the state Forest Department, had broken down 10 years ago. The villagers lacked the re-sources and the knowl-edge to reconstruct the

dam. In 2013, Reliance Foundation set up a Vil-lage Association (VA) in Fuljar village. The VA members agreed decided to reconstruct the Gafa dam. Reliance Foundation facilitated the construction by obtaining the necessary clearances from the Forest Department. An 11-mem-ber committee monitored the construction of the dam, which was complet-ed within three months.

Consid-ering the fact that Kandla import huge quantity of imported wood, Gadkari also announced plans

for furniture cluster and automobile cluster here. Gadkari proposed con-version of Kandla hospi-tal into medical college in future, an engineering college, tree plantations in Gandhidham, wind and solar power pro-ducing units to supply cheaper power to Kandla complex and desalination plant to convert sea water into potable one. Gadkari also visited Adani group operated Mundra port.

Keshubhai Patel. Rupa-la was made state BJP president when Modi was Chief Minister. Again it was believed that this was Modi’s decision. Rupala has been unsuccessful in winning elections in his base Amreli district of Saurashtra region. There are not great chances that he can win Amreli again, mainly due to the fact that he belongs to Kadva Patel community and his former constituency is Leuva Patel dominated. Rupala therefore shifted to organizational side in previous decade with en-try in Rajya Sabha. Rupa-la is considered good ora-tor who can attract people to campaign meetings. In fact this is his biggest plus point over other leaders. His impression is macho and bold. Sometime he is considered arrogant due to his this style. His sense of humor is considered best in Gujarat politics af-ter Vajubhai Vala. Unlike most BJP leaders Rupala can connect very well to literature and folk music artists and events. In fact he was once seen sing-ing a song in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation event at Tagore hall on request of others.
