DAYPosters in Delhi: Shoot Kanhaiya Kumar, get a reward of Rs 11 lakh

Posters offering a reward of Rs 11 lakh to anyone who shoots dead JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who was released on bail two days ago, have surfaced in the national capital. The small posters bear the name of the Purvanchal Sena, an organisation which claims to work for the people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and its president Adarsh Sharma and were seen at various places in New Delhi. “Whoever shoots JNUSU pres-ident and traitor Kanhaiya Kumar will be rewarded Rs 11 lakh from the Purvanchal Sena,” the posters in Hindi read. Sharma said on Saturday that they do have faith in the judiciary but want to deliver ‘quick’ jus-tice. “We want the traitor dead. He has insulted mother India and raised anti-national slogans. We have faith in the court but it takes a long time for a judgement to come. We want to ensure there is a quick decision and hence, we have announced this prize money of Rs 11 lakh to be given to whosoever kills him,”. Kumar, Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union president, was arrested on February 12 for allegedly raising an-ti-national slogans inside the campus during an event to mark the third anniversary of Parliament attack con-vict Afzal Guru’s hanging on February 9. Sharma said they have put up posters in the national capital to an-nounce their decision. “He is a traitor and this is what should be done to him,” he added. “We work for the people of UP and Bihar. Kanhaiya’s house is just 10 km away from my home in Bihar. Our land does not produce such anti-nationals. This is why I have decid-ed to do this,” he said. Police officers said they have taken note of it and initiated an inquiry into the matter. “Action will be taken against persons who have put up such posters that incite violence. A case will soon be registered. We are looking into the matter,” a senior po-lice officer said. Delhi Police have also asked universi-ty officials to inform them about Kumar’s movements outside the campus. In a letter to JNU authorities, DCP (south) Prem Nath wrote that the SHO of Vasant Kunj (North) police station should be informed well in time about “the movements and visits of Kumar outside the campus, including nature of visit and travel mode, so that necessary security and preventive measures may be tak-en to prevent any untoward incident”. The move comes in view of a court directive after the attack on Kumar at Patiala House court complex on February 17, which said police must ensure that none of the students arrested in connection with the sedition case suffer even a scratch.

The ticket win-dows showed no promise with the film managing a decent fare only in the

Plus, it had an open window with only Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja running at plexes which also has completed its two weeks run and has faced a drop in its collections.

But cricket has drastically changed since the introduction of the fastest format of the game. As the tables turn in a matter of 2-3 overs, the modern-day captains pre-fer having a plan B and C ready: what if the team’s pace spearhead bleeds runs or what if the cap-tain’s go-to bowler fails to provide a breakthrough? The men in blue have an upper hand in the T20 for-mat when it comes to hav-ing the extra bowling op-tions. MS Dhoni doesn’t

Australia swashbuckling batsman Aaron Finch has called on his side to play ‘smarter’ cricket when facing spinners, follow-ing their three-wicket loss to South Africa in the opening Twenty20 of the three-match series in Durban. Despite making a solid start, Australia failed to sustain momen-tum as the tourists were reeling at 104 for six in the 13.2 overs, thanks to an incisive spell from South African leg-spin-ner Imran Tahir (3-21) and frugal fast bowling in the middle overs. The AIFF has slapped a fine of Rs 50 lakh on FC Goa for boycotting the prize distribution cere-mony following their 2-3 loss to Chennaiyin FC in the final of the second edition of Indian Super League football in De-cember 2015. Zico’s FC Goa alleged that the game was fixed and therefore ran into trouble following the rant. The AIFF had a meeting of its disciplinary committee and said in a statement that the fine amount should be paid within 10 days by FC Goa. “FC Goa has been fined Rs 50 lakhs (which is to be paid within 10 days) for not attending the post match Presentation Cer-emony of the Hero ISL Final 2015,” the All India Football Federation said

Central trade unions on Saturday announced their decision to go ahead with a proposed nationwide strike on March 29 citing failure of talks with Coal India’s management and the Ministry of Coal over auction of blocks of the dry fuel to private companies. An estimated 3 lakh permanent min-ers and 1.80 lakh private outsourcing workers of Coal India collieries would go on strike in protest against auctioning of coal blocks to private compa-nies, General Secretary of Rashtriya Colliery Maz-door Sangh (RCMS) A K Jha said here. He made the announcement after a meeting of Joint Front comprising central trade unions INTUC, AITUC, CITU and HMS. Mr Jha said three rounds of talks last month with officers of CIL and ministry of coal could not resolve the issue. “Coal India director personnel (DP) made positive response at bipartite meeting but the management did not issue notifica-tion. So recognised central trade unions resolved to

stick to their decision of strike,” he said.

China’s leadership tried to quell anxiety about its slowing economy following financial turmoil and rising labor unrest as it cut its growth target Sat-urday and promised to open the oil and telecom industries to private competitors in sweeping in-dustrial reforms. Premier Li Keqiang announced a growth target of 6.5 to 7 percent in a report to the national legislature on Beijing’s plans for the year. That was down from last year’s “about 7 percent” and reflects the ruling Communist Party’s marathon efforts to replace a worn-out model based on trade and investment with more self-sustaining growth driven by consumer spending. Li, the country’s top economic official, warned that China faces “more and tougher problems,” including weak export de-mand. But he expressed confidence that commu-

nist leaders can maintain stable growth.

Jewellers on Friday decided to continue their strike till March 7 against the proposal to impose 1 per-cent excise duty despite the government’s assurance that it will look into the issue and clarification on the applicability of the levy. Jewellers have been on a strike since March 2 protesting against the proposed excise duty imposition on non-silver jewellery items made in the Budget 2016-17 as well mandatory quoting of PAN by customers for transaction of Rs 2 lakh and above. Representatives of All India Gems and Jewellery Federation (GJF) today met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to press for their demands. Af-ter the meeting, GJF said the Finance Minister has assured that he will look into their grievances but still the Federation decided to extend the protest till March 7. A photograph posted by a Bangladeshi fan has been at the centre of a huge controversy in social me-dia ahead of the Asia Cup final between India and Bangladesh on Sunday. The image shows Bangla-deshi fast bowler Taskin Ahmed carrying the sev-ered head of the Indian limited-overs captain MS Dhoni and it has caused majour outrage among the Indian cricket fans. This isn’t the first time

that a Bangladeshi fan has resorted to such tac-tics on the social media to target the Indian Cricket Team. In 2015, after the Indian batsmen struggled against Mustafizur Rah-man, who had made his debut during that series, a Bangladeshi newspa-per posted a photo of half-shaved heads of the Indian players, in order to show the after effects of Mustafizur’s ‘cutters’ or slow deliveries. The rivalry had taken a fierce

Stakes minimal and virtu-ally nothing to play for, Sri Lanka and Pakistan enter-tained a turnout of over 10,000 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, striking form with the bat. Batting had been their bugbear, run-ning into this final group league game of the tour-nament. They had already crashed out of the Asia Cup. Pressure gone, en-tertainment became the buzzword. Not that a flat track had been laid out, but the batsmen didn’t have the fear of failure. In the end, Pakistan won

the match by six wickets with four balls to spare. Tillakaratne Dilshan led the entertainment pack af-ter Pakistan won the toss and sent the opposition in. He was the star of the show, carrying the bat and making 75 not out off 56 balls. The 39-year-old was finally in his element, countering the dangerous Mohammad Amir with aplomb. Not that he tried something out of the box against the Pakistan quick. Dilshan mostly stayed on the front foot – even the pull shot he played to the deep square leg fence was

off the front foot – and looked for the scoring opportunities. It put Amir under pressure, which re-sulted in a terrific contest between bat and ball. It was Dilshan’s approach that stood out. He scored 23 runs off the 17 deliv-eries he faced from Amir and always showed posi-tive intent. So far, the bats-men’s treatment – save Vi-rat Kohli – to the left-arm fast bowler had bordered on reverential. Dilshan changed that, just ahead of the World T20, and the Sri Lankan team management would be happy.

booster for upcoming T20 World Cup to be held in India. They will be look-ing to find a perfect mix in the side before going up against the in-form Team India. The openers of Bangladesh have looked shaky and inconsistent in this tournament throw-ing away their wickets in powerplay and unable to provide a blazing start

to the innings. Tamim Iqbal’s return lifted the spirits of Bangladesh fans but he failed to make any impact when he was dis-missed off Mohammad Aamer’s bowling while trying to go for a big hit. A lot is expected off him against India and most importantly he should try and not lose his wicket in the first six overs.

MS Dhoni doesn’t like to chop and change the team, which was evident in the recently concluded Twenty20 International (T20I) series Down Under

like to chop and change the team, which was ev-ident in the recently con-cluded Twenty20 Interna-tional (T20I) series Down Under. And the reason is justifiable: his preferred 11 includes eight bowl-ing options. As the Mirpur pitch has gradually lost the grass, the Asia Cup T20 2016 final is expected to be a high-scoring thrill-er. And the final will be an

ideal preparation for the ICC World T20 2016 in India. With the scorching heat drying up the Indian wickets, the bowlers will find it difficult to contain the meaty blows. If India’s potent new ball pair of Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah leak runs in the batting powerplay, Dhoni has the option of giving an over or two to Hardik Pandya.

form when Rohit was giv-en not-out when he was caught off this delivery in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup quarter-final. Rohit was caught off what some believed to be a le-gal delivery, whereas the umpires had ruled it as a ‘no-ball’ for being above waist height. Rohit went on to score a hundred in that game and India defeated Bangladesh to proceed to the semi-final of the World Cup. Some members of the Bangla-deshi fraternity, it seems, are still upset with an inci-dent that happened almost a year back. Thereafter, Bangladesh defeated In-dia 2-1 in a bilateral ODI series at home, wherein, Mustafizur Rahman tor-mented the Indian bats-men with his subtle vari-ations and pace.

Upleta and Dhoraji towns of Rajkot remained shut on Friday to mourn death of a youth who had al-legedly committed suicide in a guest house “in sup-port” of the ongoing Pati-dar quota stir on Thursday. Markets remained partial-ly shut in Dhoraji, the town where Prakash Shaani (36), a Patidar youth had allegedly ended his life by consuming poison the pre-vious day. Shaani, a resi-dent of Moti Paneli village in neighbouring Upleta taluak, had checked in a guest house in Dhoraji in the morning and allegedly committed suicide by con-suming pesticide. He was found dead in his guest house room at 5:30 pm. Upleta town also observed a bandh while its major villages like Bhayavadar and Moti Paneli remained shut as well. While book-ing the room in Dhora-ji, the youth had told the

guesthouse management that he was going to Jun-agadh to take part in the annual Shivratri fair and that he wanted rest for a while before resuming his journey. He had asked the guest house staff to wake him up after 4:30 pm. “We recovered a four-page sui-cide not from his room. His brother has confirmed that the handwriting in the note is that of Shaani’s,” Dhoraji police inspector JK Zala said on Friday. n the suicide note, the youth lamented that Patidars had to launch a stir to seek quota even though “they were the ones who form government” in the state. In the note addressed to Saurashtra PAAS con-venor Lalit Vasoya, the youth writes: “With sal-utation to India, I hereby sacrifice one more life to the government. Much to the chagrin of smart city enthusiasts in the Gujarat government, the Government of India has officially admitted, with specific reference to Ahmedabad, that it does not have any fixed defini-tion of smart cities, which it wants to set up at 100 different urban locations across India. In reply to a political activist based in Ahmedabad, who wished

to know from the Govern-ment of India why only a particular area located next to the Gandhi Ashram has been included in the smart city project of Ahmedabad, and whether there were any real estate interests be-hind it, the Union Ministry of Urban Development’s Smart Cities division said, it is not prescribing “any particular model to be ad-opted by the smart cities.” Roshan Shah, in his query to the Ministry of Urban
