QUOTE OF THE

DAYIs Greece an offender or a victim? The Greek debt drama continues with a considerable dose of political rhetoric. Alexis Tsipras, the Greek prime minister who was elected to office in January this year on an anti-austerity plank and a promise to renegotiate the bailout package with lenders, has reported to have accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of “criminal responsibility” for the cur-rent state of Greece. The country has to pay back €1.5 billion to the IMF by the end of this month, which will not be possible if fresh bailout money is not released. An agreement, which will unlock funds, has not been reached so far because the Greek government is unwilling to raise taxes and cut ex-penditure, as demanded by its lenders. There have been arguments and counter arguments from both sides. Briefly, the lenders argue that economic re-forms and austerity are necessary to bring Greece back on track, while the Greek government’s argu-ment is that it wants to implement reforms but the demanded pace is hurting its economy and its peo-ple. “Greece’s creditors insist on even greater aus-terity for this year and beyond—an approach that would impede recovery, obstruct growth, worsen the debt-deflationary cycle, and, in the end, erode Greeks’ willingness and ability to see through the reform agenda that the country so desperately needs. Our government cannot—and will not—accept a cure that has proven itself over five long years to be worse than the disease,” argued Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek finance minister, in a column on Project Syndicate. Varoufakis is also upset with the way international media is covering the issue and quot-ed a Financial Times column by Philip Stephens to highlight this. Stephens had noted that the rest of the euro zone is of the view that Greece is unable and unwilling to implement economic reforms. The col-umn further noted, “…The problem is not so much the debt, nor even the pace of deficit reduction, but Syriza’s (the political party that Tsipras represents) refusal to embark on reform of the state. The words most often spoken to describe governance in Greece are clientelism, corruption, rent-seeking, special in-terests and favouritism. Without radical overhaul of the nation’s political and administrative capacity, no economic programme can work.” These arguments reinforce the general impression that fault lines of the crisis are in Athens. However, the Greek narra-tive also has intellectual support. “The folly of con-tinuing to pursue this program is particularly acute now, given the 25% decline in GDP (gross domestic product) that Greece has endured since the begin-ning of the crisis. The troika badly misjudged the macroeconomic effects of the program that they imposed… Greece’s voters were right to demand a change in course, and their government is right to refuse to sign on to a deeply flawed program,” said Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz in his 5 June column on Project Syndicate. So, is Greece a victim of harsh conditions being imposed by the rest of the union and the IMF or an offender for not doing enough? A brief view of history will help.

“It is apparent that the country’s education minister is lying about her own education. What will happen to the future of millions of children in the country. Irani has no moral, constitutional or legal right to continue in her post for even a day,”

WhatsApp has added voice calling support to its Windows Phone of-fering. Facebook-owned WhatsApp first took aim at mobile operators with the launch of voice calling in April, making it available via its Android and iOS apps and subsequently to BlackBerry 10 users. The firm has now made the feature available for users of its Windows Phone app in the latest update. “Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in anoth-er country,” the updated app description reads. “WhatsApp calls use your phone’s internet connec-tion rather than your cel-lular plan’s voice min-utes.” While voice calling is supported on cellular connections, WhatsApp recommends an unlimited data plan if you can’t stick

It also ad-vises users that they can-not access 911 and other emergency service num-bers through WhatsApp Calling. were infected with mal-ware when they connected to Facebook,” said Trev-or Pottinger, a Facebook security engineer. “In these cases, we present a cleanup tool that runs in the background while you continue using Facebook, and you get a notification when the scan is done to show you what it found.” Pottinger said the program uses “a combination of signals to help find infec-tions and get the malware off of your computer for good, even if the malware isn’t actively spreading spam or harmful links.”

Joe Root’s purposeful half-century lifted England to a 56-run victory over New Zealand in a one-off Twenty20 international on Tuesday to end to a rivet-ing contest between the teams in all forms of the game. Root’s determined 68 helped England set New Zealand a testing tar-get of 192, which proved too much for the tourists who collapsed from 89 for three to 135 all out in 16.3 overs at Old Trafford in Manchester. New Zea-land made a flying start with Kane Williamson hit-ting 57 from 37 balls, but wickets fell regularly and

when he departed at 131 for seven, England swiftly wrapped up the tail to seal victory. The result contin-ued England’s resurgence in white-ball cricket after they secured a superb 3-2 victory in a pulsating and run-filled one-day series on Saturday. A fluctuat-ing Test series between the sides was drawn 1-1. “Now we have won this game and the ODI series it reinforces to the guys that, it might not always come off, but we can beat the best in the world in any game of cricket,” En-gland captain Eoin Mor-gan told Sky Sports. He had man-of-the-match Root to thank for setting

up England’s victory after the right-hander came to the crease with his side on 25 for one. Root scored 68 runs off 46 balls, including eight fours and a six, be-fore he mistimed a slow-er delivery from Mitchell McClenaghan to Martin Guptill in the deep having steered England to 157 for six. Late hitting from Ben Stokes helped England set the tourists an imposing total, but New Zealand came out with all guns blazing. Captain Brendon McCullum smashed 35 from 15 balls, including four sixes, before a yorker from Mark Wood forced him to edge the ball on to his stumps.

India’s domestic circuit is set to see some high profile names switching teams before the new do-mestic season. Virender Sehwag is considering a switch from Delhi, ac-cording to reports. Mum-bai’s Wasim Jaffer, the highest run-getter in Ran-ji history, will join Vidar-bha after 19 years with Mumbai. According to reports on ESPNCricin-fo, Jaffer’s move is all but confirmed with the president of Vidarbha Cricket Association wel-coming Jaffer’s expertise. The batsman himself is yet to confirm the move

but is set to join Subra-maniam Badrinath and Ganesh Satish as Vidar-bha’s three professional players. If Jaffer joins Vidarbha, then Rakesh Dhruv is likely to be re-leased from the squad. The addition of Badrinath as skipper worked well for Vidarbha who quali-fied for the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy after a long wait. Virender Se-hwag too is mulling his options and reports sug-gest that the 36-year old is considering the move in a bid to make room for youngsters in the Delhi team. Calling them technical-ly good, FIFA’s referee development officer for Southeast Asia Farkhad Abdullaev today said In-dian referees need to be “courageous” in order to be in sync with the high standards. “Indian refer-ees are technically very good but comparing an evolving species with an evolved one makes little sense. However, the ref-ereeing bar has been set very high in the world and if Indian referees are to compete, they need to be courageous,” Abdullaev said. The official from Uzbekistan was speaking on the sidelines of FIFA MA assistant referees course, being conducted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). “The development of the refer-

ji season but a national comeback seems far off right now. Sehwag is said to have received offers from a number of state associations but is yet to take a call on the same. Sehwag’s Delhi career has stretched to 17 years now and with his career in the twilight stages, it seems that the batsman wants to go out and enjoy his cricket. The 37-year old Jaffer is close to be-coming the first batsman to score 10000 runs in the Ranji Trophy. Along with Badrinath, his experience will be of immense val-ue for a young side like Vidarbha. “Wasim will obviously bring in loads of experience and exper-tise. His presence will not only be handy in the batting department but also with regard to help-ing young batsmen from Vidarbha hone their skills and take their game to the next level,” Prakash Dix-it, the VCA President, was quoted as saying.

India is the sole excep-tion where FIFA is con-ducting courses for ref-erees, assistant referees and women’s referees. “This is a rare privilege which India enjoys given its vastness. In that sense, Indian referees are fortu-nate enough and the re-sults would be visible in due course.” The course

is being attended by 35 assistant referees. Abdul-laev said future of Indian referees is good. “The future looks good for In-dian referees and with the AIFF taking many initiatives it is bound to bloom. The results will be evident in given time and the progress has been commendable so far. But going forward, we need more elite referees from India,” he said.

City crime branch sleuths suspect the involvement of one Naresh, a Gandhi-nagar-based man, in orga-nizing the fake National Investigating Agency (NIA) raid on a city-based businessman, Mukund Patel, and extortion of Rs 60 lakh from him. Sourc-es said that the three men involved in the fake raid — Devilal Vaishnav, a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on dep-utation to the NIA, his son Suresh and Shankar Shekhawat — had been arrested but till Tuesday evening, the crime branch officials said they were still searching for the three accused. MD Chaudhari, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said they were still searching for the three accused in the case and denied detention or arrest of any of the ac-cused. “We have got clues and we are still working

on them,” he said. Sourc-es in the crime branch said Naresh knew about the work of Mukund Patel and about the BSF per-sonnel, Devilal. Hence he came up with the plan to send Devilal and others as NIA officials to extort money from Patel and others who Naresh knew would have some cash on hand because of the na-ture of their business. “It was Naresh who planned the raid and also kept a close eye on it. He had promised money to all participants,” said a crime branch official. Officials further said that police are trying to recovering of the money that was extorted and said that over 70 per cent recovery has been made as on Tuesday. On June 20, two of the three accused had barged into the office of Mukund Patel, a resident of Urmi Bungalow in Shahibaug, located at Samrat Com-plex on CG Road.

sources in railways said. JICA has completed its feasibility study for the much-awaited Mum-bai-Ahmedabad bullet train project and submit-ted its preliminary report to the Railway Ministry earlier. Under a memo-

randum of understanding (MoU) signed between India and Japan, the study is being jointly funded by both countries. Earlier, a pre-feasibility study was also done by RITES, an arm of railways. The bul-let train is expected to run at speeds of around 300-350 km/hour. Ac-cording to sources, the cost of the ambitious project has now been estimated at Rs 90,000 crores from Rs 63,000 crores. After the study of the financial feasibili-ty of the line, JICA feels that the fare of the bullet train between Mumbai

and Ahmedabad may be somewhere around one and half times more than the fare of the first AC of Rajdhani Express and it would be around Rs 2800. It is estimated that by 2023 around 40,000 passengers are expected to avail this service ev-eryday and accordingly it would be a financially vi-able service. JICA is like-ly to submit the final re-port next month. Besides JICA, SNFC of France has already carried out a feasibility study of the route and has submitted the business model to the ministry.
