LOGISTICS COMPLETELY REDESIGNEDDillewijn Zwapak’s new logistics centre is all about intelligent auto-mation and robots. The role of the logistics employee has changed, but it’s still essential. Logistics Team Leader Rutger Vink is happy to tell us all about it.

A quick introduction. Rutger Vink (44) began work in the packaging sector stacking shelves in what was then the Victory cash and carry, after completing his Secondary Vocational Education in Leiden in 1995. He soon rose up the ranks to become Logistics Manager. Thanks to the merger with Basics & Trends and later the integration within Dillewijn Zwapak, he eventually found himself in his current role as Logistics Team Lea-der. In his spare time, Rutger likes to jump onto his motorbike and go touring. He’s also a big film fan.

What is the responsibility of lo-gistics within Dillewijn Zwapak?Rutger: “Put very simply, we are responsible for ensuring that all products are delivered to our customers on time and in good order. That starts with receiving and checking the incoming goods, which arrive from all over the world. Then the goods need to be kept neatly and stored in an organised way. The latter is very important, since we supply around 6,000 different items from stock. Last but not least, sold goods need to be delivered to the customer in good condition and on time. A whole process has to be carried out in order to achieve this, including

E ven voorstellen. Rutger Vink (44) is, na het afron-den van zijn Middelbare

Middenstand Opleiding (Leiden), in 1995 begonnen in de verpak-kingsbranche als vakkenvuller in de cash & carry van het toenma-lige Victory. Al snel klom hij op tot Logistiek Manager. Door het samengaan met Basics & Trends en later de integratie binnen Dillewijn Zwapak belandde hij in zijn huidige functie van Logistiek Teamleider. Rutger stapt in zijn vrije tijd graag op de motor om te toeren en is een fervent filmkijker.

Wat is de verantwoordelijkheid van logistiek binnen Dillewijn Zwapak?Rutger: “heel simpel gezegd zijn wij er verantwoordelijk voor dat alle producten op tijd en in goede orde bij onze klanten geleverd worden. Dat begint met het ontvangen en controleren van binnenkomende goederen die overal ter wereld vandaan komen. Vervolgens moeten de goederen schoon en overzichtelijk opgesla-gen worden. Met name dat laatste is erg belangrijk als je bedenkt dat wij circa 6.000 artikelen uit

voorraad leveren. Last but not least moeten verkochte goede-ren netjes en op tijd bij de klant worden afgeleverd. Daar gaat een heel proces aan vooraf. Denk aan de verwerking van orderbonnen, het verzamelen en inpakken van goederen, het samenstellen van vrachtdocumenten en het in-plannen van transportmiddelen.”

Begin 2019 is Dillewijn Zwapak verhuisd naar een nieuw kantoor met een groot modern Logistiek Centrum. Heeft dat te maken met de groei die het bedrijf de afgelopen jaren heeft doorgemaakt? “Zeker, we verkopen artikelen aan de gehele branche van kweker tot bloemist en hebben daarin een sterke positie als marktleider. Daarnaast maakt onze webshop een stormachtige ontwikkeling door, wat natuurlijk fantastisch is, maar ook een keerzijde heeft. Klanten verwachten dat als zij 24/7 kunnen bestellen, de goede-ren ook binnen een paar dagen worden geleverd. In de oude situatie waarbij de voorraden verdeeld waren over 3 magazij-nen werd snelle levering steeds lastiger. Om maar niet te spreken over al die niet bepaald duurzame vrachtritjes tussen onze locaties.”

Een magazijn bemand door robots. Is het werk daardoor veranderd?“Dat is het verschil tussen dag en nacht. Voorheen was één mede-werker met één order bezig en handelde de order compleet af. Nu pakken medewerker en robot ieder een gedeelte van het order-proces en handelen dat af. Het pallet vervoer binnen het magazijn wordt nu allemaal door robots verzorgd. Dit heeft veel voordelen, een robot is 16 uur per dag inzetbaar en artikelen worden niet meer op verkeerde locaties weggezet etc. Uiteindelijk profiteert de klant door vlotte en correcte leveringen. Het mooie van robotisering is dat de mens altijd nodig blijft binnen het

In early 2019, Dillewijn Zwapak moved to a new office with a large, modern Logistics Centre. Is that because of the growth that the company has seen over recent years? “Absolutely, we sell items to the entire sector, from growers to florists and we have a strong position here as market leader. Our webshop is also undergoing rapid development, which is fantastic of course, but does have its flipside. Customers expect to be able to order everything 24/7, and for the goods to be delivered within a couple of days. In the old situation, where the products were divided between three separate warehouses, speedy delivery was becoming more and more difficult. To say nothing of the freight trips between our locations, which weren’t exactly sustainable.”

A warehouse manned by robots. Has that changed the way you work?“The difference is like night and day. It used to be that one employee would be busy working on one order and completed that order in full. Now the employee and the robot each handle part of the order process and complete that. The transportation of pallets around the warehouse is all carried out by robots now. This has a lot of advantages, a robot can operate for 16 hours a day and items are no longer stored in the wrong locations etc. In the end, customers benefit from smooth

Hoeveel ga je verhuizen? Is alles deugde-lijk ingepakt? Zijn alle data goed ingevoerd? Hoeveel vrachtritten plan je in? Hoeveel weken heb je nodig voor de fysieke verhuizing en kun je tegelijkertijd orders blijven uitleveren? Daarnaast moet je natuurlijk aan de slag met een nieuw automatiseringssysteem.

What would you like to say to companies who are on the brink of a similar logistical operation?“I was involved in the project from the very start. Preparation is crucial. How much are you going to move? Has everything been packed properly? Has all the data been entered correctly? How many freight trips will you plan? How many weeks will the physical relocation take and can you continue to deliver orders at the same time? Of course you also need to start working with a new automisation system, and you can carry out as many simulations as you like beforehand but things will always go wrong, teething problems, bugs etc. That can be pretty frustrating and difficult at times, but if you just keep working you will get through it. You’ve got to put the effort in to see results.”

What will your role be in the future?“I will supervise the logistics employees, together with my fellow team leaders. We will monitor and manage the process closely. Today, we make sure that the process is running smoothly and from tomorrow we will be working to further optimise it. As long as we continuing to develop, I am a happy man.”

Zonder wrijving geen glans.” Jouw rol in de toekomst?“Ik stuur samen met mijn collega teamleiders de logistieke mede-werkers aan. We volgen en sturen het proces nauwkeurig. Vandaag zorgen dat het proces goed loopt en vanaf morgen weer verder optimaliseren. Zolang er ontwik-keling is, ben ik een gelukkig man.”

Dillewijn Zwapak besteedt heel veel aandacht aan de presentatie van haar collecties. Niet alleen om de verkoop te promoten maar ook ter inspiratie van onze klanten. Tijdens photoshoots zorgt het team van 20NU, Lucienne, Judith en Immy voor de styling van de set. In de weken daarvoor selecteren zij een geschikte fotolocatie, bedenken zij de verschillende settings en verzamelen zij attributen. Op het laatste moment kopen zij de bloemen en planten want die moeten natuurlijk super vers zijn! Onze studio ontwerpers foto-graferen overigens zelf. Het eindresultaat van de photoshoots vind je terug in bijvoorbeeld dit magazine en op onze website en social media.

Achter de schermen

Behind the scenes - Green-fingered stylists Dillewijn Zwapak pays a lot of attention to the presentation of its collections, not just to promote sales but also to inspire our customers. During photoshoots, the 20NU team, Lucienne, Judith and Immy, are responsible for styling the set. In the weeks leading up to the shoot, they select a suitable photo location, come up with different settings and collect props. They buy the flowers and plants at the last moment, because of course they need to be super fresh! Our studio designers also take their own photographs. You can see the final results of the photoshoots in this magazine, for example, as well as on our website and social media.
