We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services:

We welcome all visitors and pray that our wor-ship will provide an opportunity for you to expe-rience God’s love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.

Attendance Registration Books: Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.

Holy Communion: We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacra-ment are welcome to partake. Holy Com-munion is offered with both common and indi-vidual cups. If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Glu-ten-free wafers are available. Be sure to ask as you are being served. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.

Fellowship Between Services: Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!

Nursery and Infant Care Rooms: Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm. Both the nursery and infant care are in Room 218. Addi-tional changing tables are available on the sanctuary level in the family and men’s re-strooms, in the women’s restroom located in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.

INTRODUCTION On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table. Simon and Jude, Apostles We know little about these apostles. Simon is listed as “the zealot” or Cananean in New Testament lists. Jude, also called Thaddeus, asked Jesus at the last supper why he had revealed himself to the disciples but not to the world. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK October 28—Simon and Jude, Apostles Little is known about Simon and Jude. In New Testament lists of the apostles, Simon the “zealot” or Cananaean is men-tioned, but he is never mentioned apart from these lists. Jude, sometimes called Thaddeus, is also mentioned in lists of the Twelve. At the last supper Jude asked Jesus why he had cho-sen to reveal himself to the disciples but not to the world. A traditional story about Simon and Jude says that they traveled together on a missionary journey to Persia and were both martyred there.

October 31—Reformation Day By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran church-es celebrated a festival commemorating Martin Luther's post-ing of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of the abuses in the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the good news that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free.

November 1—All Saints Day The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints cele-brates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. We remember all who have died in the faith and now serve God around the heavenly throne.

November 3—Martín de Porres, renewer of society, died 1639 Martín was the son of a Spanish knight and Ana Velázquez, a freed black slave from Panama. Martin apprenticed himself to a barber-surgeon in Lima, Peru, and was known for his work as a healer. Martin was a lay brother in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and engaged in many charitable works. He was a gardener as well as a counselor to those who sought him out. He was noted for his care of all the poor, regardless of race. His own religious community described him as the “father of charity.” His work included the founding of an orphanage, a hospital, and a clinic for cats and dogs. He is recognized as an advocate for Christian charity and interracial justice.

CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME KU STUDENTS! We are so excited for you to be here, and we look forward to growing togeth-er in Christ! You will find out quickly that this is a friendly congregation that cares about you. Campus Min-istry’s theme for the 2018-19 academic year is “Real. Present. God.” and our verse is Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.” We invite you each Wednesday evening at 8 PM to gather in the Campus Ministry room next to the gym for fellowship, warm cookies, and to study the lives of men and women depicted in the Bible. God was real and present in their lives, and we want to discuss how God is real and present in our lives today. Pastor Randy will be the lead facilitator. Let’s have some fun this year as we grow in Christ together.

Please be sure to put your Lawrence address, preferred email, and telephone number on attendance sheet.

PARISH NOTES AND NEWS TODAY’S ALTAR FLOWERS were given by Tim Hetzler in Thankfulness for the Glory of God’s Blessings.

PRINTED COPIES of Pastor’s Randy’s sermons for the past month are available for your taking. They are located in the plastic rack on the front corner of the table in the church entryway. Today’s sermon is printed on white-colored paper

JUSTICE MATTERS: Whether or not you have signed up as a Network Member this year, you are invited to attend the Community Problems Assembly tomorrow night at 6:30 PM (that’s Monday, October 29) at the First Presbyterian Church. Here you can learn more about the issues Justice Matters will be tackling this year, with a special focus on the November vote on Proposition 1, a quarter-cent sales tax for mental health. Come and learn how you too can "do justice" (Micah 6:8) and how together we can become a powerful voice for “restoration” in Douglas County. If you have any questions, please contact Angela Signor, Ralph Planthold, Ann Hossler, or Virgil Dean.

OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH Did you know that October is officially Pastor Appreciation Month? The Elders of Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center want to let the congregation know that October would be a great time to let Pastor Randy and Nancy know how much you value you them.

What might be some ways to show your appreciation? Here’s a few ideas: 1. Invite someone to church to hear Pastor preach. 2. Pray daily for Pastor and Nancy. 3. Send a note of appreciation to them. 4. Volunteer to help with a task at church. 5. Share a pie or cookies or a special recipe with them. 6. Be creative to find a way to share your special talents in appreciation of all Pastor Randy and Nancy do for us at Immanuel. 7. Thank God on a regular basis for sending us such a wonderful team!

    — Barb Riley and Tim Hetzler, Co-Head Elders

FAMILY PROMISE: Immanuel’s next Family Promise rotation begins on Sunday, Nov. 18. Please seize this opportunity to help us share our food with the hungry and provide shelter to the homeless (Isaiah 58:7) during this special time for giving thanks. “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” (2 Corinthians 9:11). If you, your family, and/or your church committee can prepare a meal, stay overnight, or host for an evening, contact Ann Hossler (305-205-3136) or Virgil Dean (785-424-5115).

In the meantime, Immanuel will host Family Promise’s quarterly Network Council Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7-8:30 PM. Family Promise of Lawrence in partnership with Family Centered Therapy and Provider Supports (FCTPS) will present “Trauma Informed Care Training.” FCTPS is a local agency that provides “trauma-informed care and trauma -specific services to children, adults, families and the service providers who support them” (https://www.becauseyourstorymatters.com). All are welcome!

PRELIMINARY STEWARDSHIP RESULTS: As of October 21, 40 families pledged $164,556 toward Immanuel's 2019 budget, and 46 individuals completed a 2019 Volunteer Opportunities form. If you haven't made a 2019 Financial Pledge or completed a 2019 Volunteer Opportunities form, it's not too late! Extras are on the south table in the narthex--just put your completed forms in the labeled boxes on the same table. If we each do a little, together we can do a lot.

THANKSGIVING WORSHIP SERVICE We have received 40 responses from the Thanksgiving vote and 35 voted for wishing to attend a Wed. Nov. 21 evening service. Immanuel will plan to have the Thanksgiving worship service on Wed evening, Nov. 21 at 7:00 PM.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE IS IN NEED of a frost-free dorm-sized refrigerator-freezer. It should be rela-tively new, in good working order. If someone would like to donate one to the church, please contact Sharon Hettinger.

OFFERING COUNTERS ARE STILL NEEDED: We like to have 2 counters each week. Offering counting takes about 1 hour after the 11:00 AM service (30 minutes after special services). Training provided. Please sign up to count offerings for a Sunday in the 3-ring binder in the narthex. You can also talk to Cristi Hansen, send her an email ([email protected]), or leave her a text or voicemail on her cell phone (785-550-9001).

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music ministry. Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the designated gift enve-lopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put “new staff position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one year of salary in the account be-fore advertising for the position.

NEED A MEMBER’S ADDRESS OR EMAIL? We update the church directory on the first of each month on the website. Be sure you update the office with any changes in emails, phone numbers and addresses by the 25th of the month. You can view the most updated version of Immanuel’s Di-rectory of Members on our website: immanuellawrence.org. After logging in, go to Members Only (bar at top of page). Go to the Resources pull-down tab and select Documents. You will see a link there to Immanuel Lutheran Church Directory of Members. Call the church office if you have any questions. Thank you.

SAVE YOUR GROCERY STORE RECEIPTS FOR SCHOOL BENEFIT Hy-Vee and Checkers will donate a portion of the value of purchases to Lawrence schools that collect and turn in the receipts. You can place them in the basket on the narthex table. Receipts for purchases of groceries, gaso-line, or pharmaceuticals are accepted. The receipts can be taken to a different school each month. We will continue to collect receipts throughout the summer. They will be used throughout the school year. If you’d like to choose a month(s) to deliver receipts to a school of your choice, please contact JoAnn Siler, 331-5259.

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH WHOM TO SHARE SUNDAY LUNCH? Tired of eating alone? Want to get to know Immanuel’s family better? What better way than over food! If you desire to share your Sunday lunch plans with others, please meet in the Activity Center at 12:15 PM each Sunday. Contact Eleanor Woodyard for more information, 842-3092.

FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family mem-bers to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a surprising acci-dent, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision-making, IL-CUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s library, room 223.

GENEROSITY THOUGHT —Romans 3:20 –“For ‘no human being will be justified in his sight’ by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.” The Law of God is good; it is just that we sinners cannot save ourselves by the Law. Salvation is a free gift of God, be-cause that is the only way we ever could be saved. The Law shows us God’s holiness and thus our own sin. And now in Christ we can look at the Law and see it in a new light as well—as a guide for how to live a godly life in thanksgiving to God for God’s gracious forgiveness in Christ.

STEPHEN MINISTERS ARE THERE TO CARE Are you going through a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? Are you lonely, experiencing a crisis, or simply stressed by everyday life? You don’t have to suffer alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. To find out more, talk with Pastor Randy, Immanuel-University’s Stephen Leader.

THE LUTHERAN HOUR What if we get to heaven—and we don’t like it? Listen to The Lutheran Hour next Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on radio station WIBW 580 AM (Topeka), at 8:00 a.m. on KCMO 710 AM (Mission), or at 8:30 a.m.
