QUOTE OF THE

DAYAmit Shah’s re-election, testing times in his second term as BJP president

While the Congress is still uncertain about who will lead the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the BJP has taken a head start. With the re-election of Amit Shah as BJP president, it is clear that the Na-rendra Modi-Amit Shah team will lead the party in 2019. Shah’s personality traits tilted the decision in his favour — a man of few words, he is committed to the ideological rooting of the party, balances the party-government equation unobtrusively, and enjoys the confidence of the RSS. With the BJP under Shah, Modi has complete freedom to implement his gover-nance agenda. Even as the Modi government com-pletes a third of its term in office today, Amit Shah begins a new inning as the BJP national president. The party heads for elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puduchery assemblies in the next few months, after suffering humiliating defeats in Delhi and Bihar. The BJP had initially sensed a vic-tory in Bihar, only to be outsmarted in strategy and campaign by Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar. Shah’s skills as an organiser and strategist will be tested in the poll-bound states, especially in Assam where the BJP has seen spectacular growth and fancies its chances. Success in these elections will also influence the out-come in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, which votes in 2017. Shah’s ascent to power coincid-ed with Narendra’s Modi’s rise to power. His election management was credited as one of the reasons for the BJP’s unprecedented success in the 2014 general election. Wins in Maharashtra and Haryana followed and Shah grew in influence and stature. The BJP ben-efited from the momentum derived from the general election outcome and anti-incumbency in these states. Delhi marked the tapering of the upward curve. The success in Jammu and Kashmir apart, the party and the government have not had much to celebrate in recent times. The economic slowdown, agrarian dis-tress and controversies triggered by fringe groups and second-rung leaders have overshadowed the politics of hope Modi wishes to ride. With Modi’s leadership unchallenged, Shah could become the fall guy if the party falters. The evident discontent among party se-niors towards his leadership could spread in the event of more electoral failures. In his last term, Shah talked about a Congress-mukt Bharat and started an aggres-sive campaign to make the BJP the largest cadre party in the world. The party claims membership has risen from 30 million to 110 million under Shah’s watch.

Director Sudha Kongara Prasad, who spent near-ly six years of her life on forthcoming Hindi-Tam-il bilingual sports drama “Saala Khadoos”, says she and her team went through “hell” to make the film. “We faced roadblock after roadblock, went through hell to find someone to blindly believe in our film. We literally struggled to get this film made,” Sud-ha said. Hope came in the form of actor R. Madha-van, recalls the director. She approached him with the script in 2011 when he was shooting for his Tam-il film “Vettai”. “He told me he would tell me in 48 hours if he would do it. But I told him I didn’t have a producer and I wanted the film to reach out to people and for that to happen, we should take it to the right people.” “He told me, ‘Sudha, you’ve given me the best script and see where I take you’,” she said. Madhavan was instrumental in bringing on board his “3 Idiots” film-maker Rajkumar Hirani, who has produced the film in Hindi. “Without Raju-ji, this project would have been a small film. Our last producer literally dumped us midway and when things were going from bad to worse was when Rajuji stepped in,” Sudha said. Hirani’s association with the project came as a big boost, she added.

Gujarat issues fresh notice to ex-IPS officer Rahul Sharmathe then chief minister Narendra Modi, for de-partmental “misconduct”. The notice, according to a Home Department official, was issued on January 12, days before the Central Administra-tive Tribunal last Friday held that the chargesheet against Sharma for keep-ing with him crucial CDs in the 2002 riot cases was “tainted by mischief” and “coloured by malice and mala fides”. The tri-bunal had scrapped the chargesheet. While, Shar-ma remained unavailable for comment, a top Home Department official said, “The showcause notice has been issued, but he doesn’t remember the de-tails.” Additional Chief Secretary, Home, P K Taneja did not comment over the matter. Accord-ing to sources, the Home Deportment officials while “going through the files of Sharma” came to a conclusion that in 2012 there have been several instances where he allegedly violated ser-

vice rules. In one of the instances, cited as “mis-conduct” by the govern-ment, Sharma while on leave remained in Gand-hinagar and kept his of-ficial vehicle, the driver and the gunman with him. The government pulled up Sharma for staying in Gandhinagar, despite the fact that he had an official work in Ahmedabad. He was then posted in Rajkot. The notice stated that for police officers posted in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad is considered as a link city. But, Sharma was posted in Rajkot and after an official work in Ahmedabad, he stayed on in Gandhinagar. “Thus by travelling from Ahmedabad to Gandhi-nagar, he misused the gov-ernment vehicle and burnt fuel unnecessarily,” the notice stated.
