QUOTE OF THE

DAYDelhi to get 205 dedicated lanes for emergencies

The Delhi government is all set to notify dedicated stretches in the city that will be reserved for emer-gency vehicles in case of a disaster. The stretches will be similar to the lanes that were reserved during the Commonwealth Games 2010 for athletes and of-ficials. The decision has been taken to ensure am-bulances and fire tenders do not get caught in traffic jams during any emergency or a disaster. To ensure people leave the disaster management lanes empty, a siren will be used to inform commuters. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) will also carry out extensive awareness campaigns to ensure people are educated about these lanes. The scheme which is a joint effort of the Delhi Disaster Manage-ment Authority, transport department and the Delhi traffic police will come into force soon. According to Delhi government officials, there are a total of 205 lanes that will be reserved for emergency sit-uations across the city. Confirming the move, Del-hi transport minister Gopal Rai told HT: “We are in the process of issuing a notification and it will come into force soon.” To ensure people are able to identify these roads, they will Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg Press Enclave Road, Saket MB Road Extreme right lane of roads will be reserved for emergency situations Ring Road, AIIMS to Moolchand Savitri Cinema Road Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) August Kranti Marg (Siri Fort) be painted blue with ‘disaster lanes’ written on them and signages will be put up too. Officials said that mock-drills too would be organised to ensure people are made aware of the system. “A one kilometre stretch would have four such markings to ensure people get to know about these lanes,” said a senior Delhi government official. To begin with the agencies will ensure people are made aware of the lanes and the benefit of reserving them for emergency vehicles during such situations. However, to ensure people follow this rule a fine will be imposed on vehicles if they enter the reserved lanes during any emergency situation, under the Mo-tor Vehicles Act 1988. Transport department likely to notify these lanes. These lanes will be painted blue with disaster lanes written on them so that they are easily identifiable. According to senior Delhi govern-ment officials, roads that have been identified are near to fire stations, police stations, deputy commissioners office, SDM’s office and hospitals. It is not uncom-mon to see an emergency vehicle getting caught in a traffic snarl on Delhi’s roads. “Generally people don’t give way to ambulances and other emergency vehi-cles. It is not only the PCRs and ambulances that need space. Disaster can come in any form and sometimes when there is a building collapse, even equipment such as JCBs have to be travel from once place to another. Due to this precious time is also lost when ferrying the injured from one place to another,” a se-nior Delhi government official said. The Emergency was a conjuncture of different complexes. Individual elements of these complexes are always with us.

Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor cele-brated his 30th birthday today. The ac-tor was born on June 26, 1985. Arjun Kapoor is one of the smartest young actors to have debuted in the recent times. With just six movies old, Arjun has been successful in making a serious mark in the Bollywood industry. His performances make the audience feel that he is not a new entry and rather is a nuanced performer. We saw the actor prove his mettle by giving stellar perfor-mances in movies such as Ishaqzaade, Aurang-zeb, Gunday, 2 States, Finding Fanny, Tevar. And now that actor is geared up to show his performance in the forthcoming film Farzi. He will also be seen in a yet to be titled R Balki movie opposite Ka-reena Kapoor Khan. Speaking some facts about the ac-tor, Arjun Kapoor used to weigh 140kg in his teenage years, but under Salman Khan’s guidance, the actor lost weight and appeared with his fit physique in his debut film. The actor had already faced a bad phase with his father Boney Kapoor marry-ing Sridevi. Don’t discount the impor-tance of good beginnings. The first 20 minutes of Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho is anything but a model of clarity. The following happens in that period: Pradhan (Annu Kapoor), an influential Khap Pan-chayat member, searches for his missing wife, in a village fair, who’s secret-ly gone to meet her lover, Arjun (Rahul Bagga); the same fair’s also hosting a beauty pageant for, erm, buffaloes; Arjun and his friends bump into Pandit Ravi Kishanas Bheema

(Sanjay Mishra), a cross between a priest and a quack, who is trying to convince the onlookers that the teenage girl sit-ting decked up on stage is an avatar of almighty. Pradhan then goes to the same charlatan later in the night to find a cure for his impotency; in be-tween, there’s also a scene featuring a shopkeeper selling bras to women, who don’t know their bra size, by hesitantly look-ing at their breasts. These disconnected scenes share one common characteris-tic, though: they try hard to be funny. And this is

a common refrain of the film, too; its attempts at be-ing a comedy are strained, because that end is often reached by compromis-ing common sense, a log-ical story and convincing characters. So early in the film, we know that Arjun is having an affair with Pradhan’s wife, Maya (Hr-ishita Bhatt), but instead of meeting secretly to avoid her husband’s wrath, they roam freely together, quite literally, in broad daylight, like two teenagers recently hit by puberty. The two of them are caught, and an ex-tended sequence is forced out of this plot point.

SPORTS ROUNDUPDhoni’s under pressure to Kohli’s gone missing: Takeaways for India from series against BangladeshAgency | Mirpur

India’s tour of Bangla-desh came to an end as Mashrafe Mortaza lifted the ODI series trophy in front of the joyous Dha-ka crowd on Wednesday. The past few months have been a dream for these fans and the play-ers with the World Cup quarter-final appear-ance and a dominating series win over Paki-stan. This tremendous performance against India is the icing on the cake, arguably. So what did we learn about this Indian team from

this series? Amidst the myriad issues that sur-faced during this series – like Dhoni’s captain-cy, Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane’s place in the team, India’s fast bowling etc – the Indi-an vice-captain’s barren run has flown under the radar somewhat. After the century against Pa-kistan in Adelaide, he is yet to register a score of 50-plus in 10 match-es, averaging a shade above 30 for his 247 runs. For a man who has set lofty standards for the last few years, those

Sony has launched its 2015 flagship phone, the Xperia Z3+ at an event in New Delhi today at a price of Rs 55,990. While in the past we have seen Sony launch two Xperia flagships in a year, this time around Sony has launched only one so far. The Sony Xperia Z3+ houses the Qualcomm Snapdrag-on 810 SoC which has an octa-core processor along with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 430 graphics solution. The metallic frame around the Z3+ is slimmer than the Z3 and the phone is compara-

OnePlus has been quite disruptive in the tech startup and mobile devic-es space. After a success-ful launch of the OnePlus One flagship device and an exclusive agreement with Cyanogen, OnePlus is trying out new and in-novative ways of mar-keting its next flagship – the OnePlus 2. In a post on the OnePlus Forum founder Carl Pei said, “We’re excited for the future. As a tech startup, our goal is to push the en-velope, look for new op-portunities, and strive to perfect them. Virtual re-ality holds a monumental amount of potential. With cutting-edge technology, we can explore corners of the world like never

before. We already know that VR will change the face of the entertainment industry, but we’re here to try something new.” The post adds, “A VR launch lets you stand right next to our team and our fans as we unveil our new flagship. You’ll be able to look around as you check out the phone in a new way and maybe even find a few hidden Easter eggs. It’s a new way of thinking about a product launch. After being hit by a mas-sive earthquake and mul-tiple after shocks which ravaged the en tire Hima-layan Kingdom, Nepal is slowly but surely getting up on its feet. Amongst the many people who are lending a healing touch to the tragedy-struck coun-try is Mumbai’s physio-therapist and sports med-icine expert, Aijaz Ashai. The physio has been roped in by the Nepal cricket team in its endeavour to make it to the World T20, which will be held in In-dia next February. From

July 10, Nepal will jostle spotlight with 12 other teams in the World T20 qualifiers to be held in Ireland and Scotland. Six of those teams will make the cut. For the record, Nepal had also qualified for the previous edition held in Bangladesh last March. Ashai, who has enjoyed stints with the Mumbai and Delhi Ranji Trophy teams, and also with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, was impressed by the Nepal cricketers during a 15day camp in Dharamsala last month. “They played two match-

es against Himachal Pradesh and bowled out the opposition for 60 in one of them. It’s a young lot with the average age being 25. They can throw their bodies around. They can have the capacity to pull of brilliant catches and effect run outs. Plus they have a bowler-Som-pal, who clocks 138 kmph, at 21, which is too good for his age. The cap-tain is leading from the front, the coach is han-dling the team well, there is professionalism in the side, and I can see them improve.”

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to sched-ule a bowling assessment test for all-rounder Mo-hammad Hafeez in Chen-nai. According to a source in the board, the PCB has written to the ICC to carry out a bowling assessment of Hafeez as soon as pos-sible. Hafeez, a batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin, was reported by match officials for having an illegal bowling action

for the second time within a year during the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle few days ago. Under ICC laws, he has to undergo a bowling assessment test at a ICC accredited lab-oratory within 14 days and can continue to bowl during this period. If he fails the ICC test he can be banned from bowl-ing for 12-months. “The PCB is concerned with the situation with Hafeez and wants the test to be held as soon as possi-ble in Chennai. Because they want a clear picture

of where he stands,” the source said. He said in-ternally the PCB hierar-chy or the national team management were not very hopeful that Ha-feez’s bowling action will be cleared in the lat-est ICC bowling assess-ment test. “It seems Ha-feez will have to focus on his batting a lot more in the coming months to remain in the national team,” the source said. Hafeez is likely to miss the third Test in Sri Lan-ka because of the bowl-ing assessment test.

The comparisons are in-evitable but perhaps not exactly deserved... yet. China’s Yao Ming stands at seven feet and six inch-es to Satnam Singh’s sev-en foot two inches and he was an established star even before he came to the NBA. He was the third Chinese player to make it into the NBA, but the first to make it big in the league. He dominated the Chinese Basketball Association (averaging a 32.4 points per game in his final season with the Shanghai Sharks) and was the first player picked in the 2002 NBA draft unlike Satnam, who was the 52nd draft pick. And he also went on to become an eight-time NBA All-Star. His rise to fame in the NBA league

are staggering numbers. But forget the numbers for a moment. The three dismissals in this se-ries tell their own sto-ry. The first match saw him play at a ball on

the sixth stump outside off, with feet not going anywhere and eyes see-ing the cover boundary and not the ball. He was beaten by a harmless straighter one from a

part-time off-spinner who mostly just bowls straighter ones, to get trapped leg-before in the 2nd ODI. The last match saw him play the ugliest of slogs to a well-flighted Shakib al Hasan delivery. All three dismissals were the mark of a man short on confidence – and that is something you would never associate with Kohli. Leaving aside all that, a long, tiring sea-son is no excuse to rock on the back-foot and nudge the ball to the point fielder off a FREE HIT.

An Asiatic lioness, which strayed into a Shiva tem-ple in rain-ravaged Am-reli district and attacked two women devotees, was rescued and released into the jungle after a 15-hour-long operation by forest officials. The incident took place yesterday in Ingrola village when the local women reached the temple to offer prayers and spotted the lioness inside, M R Gurjar, Dep-uty Conservator of forest, Amreli division. As soon as the two women entered the temple, the lioness at-tacked them, leaving the duo injured following which they were admitted to a nearby hospital, the official said. It is not every day that you get to watch mov-ies that are made with so much passion and reality that you simply cannot get them out of your head for a long period of time. Once you go for this mov-ie titled Uvaa, you are sure to remember it for quite a long period of time, (lon-ger than you imagine right

With this recent trend of making movies that are close to real life and are very unconventional is in-creasing with every pass-ing day. I am sure it was a challenge for Mr. Director here to express something

so overwhelming and sen-sitive with so ease and in a way that can be under-stood and related by most of the youngsters. Not all have this talent of bring-ing art in such a way that can be accepted, admired and respected by all. The treatment given to the en-tire concept and the idea is amazing and the story is narrated in a very smooth and a convincing manner.

Many prides of lions are usually seen lazing on the banks of the river, said Gurjar. According to him, the animal was rescued after a 15-hour-long operation by a team of forest officials in the wake of torrential rains lashing the area making it difficult to mobilise men

and material for such an operation. Roads leading to the temple were com-pletely submerged after the district received 22 inches of rainfall, he said. However, around 1.30 AM today, forest officials overpowered the lioness and tranquilised it, ending the operation, Gurjar said.
