As against the decision of the Labour Minister-headed Central Board of Trustees’ to provide 8.8 per cent rate of interest on PF deposits for 2015-16, the Finance Ministry has approved 8.7 per cent interest rate, which has implication for over 5 crore subscribers of the Employees’ Prov- ident Fund Organisation (EPFO). “The (EPFO’s apex decision-making body) CBT, at its meeting held in February 2016, had proposed an inter- im rate of interest at 8.8 per cent to be credited to the accounts of EPF subscribers for 2015-16. Trade unions including RSS-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) have lodged their pro- test against the Finance Ministry’s decision of lowering the interest rate approved by the CBT. “BMS strongly con- demns the cut in EPF in- terest rates and will hold demonstrations at EPF offices on April 27,” BMS General Secretary Virjesh Upadhyay said, adding the Fund is managed by the CBT, an independent and autonomous body. Their arrest had triggered widespread protests. The campus has been made out of bounds for two for- mer students -- Banojyot- sana Lahiri and Draupadi -- while hostel facilities have been withdrawn for Ashutosh Kumar for a year and Komal Mohite till July 21. A high-level committee constituted by the university to probe the February 9 event found ABVP member Saurabh Sharma, who had object- ed to the event, “guilty” of blocking traffic on the day of the event and penal- ised him with Rs 20,000. Surprisingly, Aishwarya Adhikari, whose name was not mentioned in the report, has also been im- posed the same penalty. “Based on the report of the high-level committee which arrived at its con- clusion based on depo- sitions, perusal of video clips (provided by JNU Security and authenti- cated by forensic tests), and examination of doc- uments on record, the university has decided to rusticate three students,” a senior university offi- cial said. “While Anirban Bhattacharya has been rusticated till 15 July, he will not be able to pursue any course or participate in any activity on campus for next five years, Umar Khalid has been rusticat- ed for one semester and Mujeeb Gattoo for two semesters,” the official said. He said financial penalty has been imposed on 14 students including Kanhaiya who has been penalised with Rs 10,000. While Umar and Anir- ban were found guilty of triggering communal vio- lence and disrupting com- munal harmony on cam- pus, Mujeeb was found guilty of participating in the sloganeering. The re- port of the five-member panel had also pointed out lapses on part of ad- ministration and taken into account the role of outsiders into the event. However, no action has been taken against any administrative official. “As per the committee findings, application for holding this event ‘cir- cumvented’ the ‘permis- sion process’ and ‘the organisers disobeyed the instructions from the ad- ministration’ not to hold it and that amounted to ‘willful defiance’,” the JNU official said. He said disciplinary measures have been taken for not following university pro- cedures, providing mis- information to the uni- versity, misconduct and indiscipline, causing and colluding in the unautho- rised entry of any person into the campus, putting up objectionable post- ers, arousing communal, caste or regional feelings and creating disharmo- ny, blockade or forceful prevention of any nor- mal movement of traffic and violation of security, safety rules notified by the university. QUOTE OF THE

DAYIndia does not need Salman Khan at Rio Olympics 2016 ?The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) works in mysterious ways, its wonders to perform. The choice of film actor Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador for India at the Rio Olympics has pre-dictably set a cat among the pigeons, with the IOA justifying the choice and many sportspersons ques-tioning it. The post itself has been created for this sporting event and prima facie there seems to be no case at all for the actor to be cast in this role. His only claim to sportsmanship is that he plays a wres-tler in the movie Sultan, but then again there have been many actors who have essayed the role of sportspersons in movies, notable among them Far-han Akhtar as the great sprinter Milkha Singh. Mr Khan is undoubtedly a cine superstar with legions of fans. But his role as goodwill ambassador in no way adds lustre to India’s presence at the event, rather it will be the tally of medals and the conduct of our participants that will attract attention. If an ambassador is at all required, there are a number of eminent sportspersons who could be chosen. The star is hardly a role model for young people, given his track record. He has been known to be violent to the women he has had relationships with and is an accused in the shooting of a black buck. Instead of prolonging this controversy, it should be the en-deavour of the IOA to make sure that our sportsper-sons are in the best shape they can be to participate in this highly competitive event. Our sports infra-structure leaves much to be desired and this should be a source of worry to the IOA. It is these nuts and bolts issues that should be tackled, not just for Rio but also in the long run and not choosing ambas-sadors to generate goodwill. Mr Khan’s presence could actually impact adversely on India if some-one were to delve into his past. This is certainly not the sort of publicity that India should court. In recent times, young Indian sportspersons have shown some promise in different fields. The effort of the IOA should be ensure that they perform to their maximum potential at Rio and increase our so far unimpressive medal tally.

“Modi has become a global leader now and he is going across the world as the Prime Minister of India. People of this country are reeling under drought and are dying of hunger and thirst. The feeling among the people is that he should stay in the country and worry for the people,” - An editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said.

Hrithik Roshan has just finished shooting for Mohenjo Daro. He’d bulked up for the film and now that the shoot is over, he has relaxed his

diet and is ready to go back to his original form. The actor has never been on a vegetarian diet and

has decided to try it out now that he is not shooting for some time. Anyone who is into body building

understands the importance of protein (chick-en, fish and eggs) in their diet, so the actor could not try this change earlier.

After giving a string of hit films like “Tanu Weds Manu” “Tanu Weds Manu Returns” and “Raanjhanaa”, filmmaker Aanand L. Rai is all set to work with superstar Shah Rukh Khan for his next film and says “nobody understands or-dinariness better than him. Rai also shared that the “Chennai Ex-press” star is an experi-enced human being and has “seen life not just as an actor but as a per-son”. “Yes (he is play-ing a dwarf)…We (me and Shah Rukh) have to start working. Right now we are scripting. But meeting that man makes you believe that nothing can beat expe-rience. He is such an experienced hu-man being. He has seen life not just as an actor but as a person,” Rai said. “He is such a large hearted and intelligent man,” he added. The filmmaker also shared that the “Dilwale” star knows how to make a person “feel important”.

“He has a great understanding of human beings…I am in love with that man.” Rai says he is “really looking forward to work with him”. This is not the first time the 50-year-old star will be playing a challenging role. Shah Rukh, tagged as the “King of romance” by his fans, has played such roles in films like “My

Name Is Khan”, “Kal Ho Naa Ho” and “Fan”. Asked how

did he come up with a sto-ry of a dwarf, Rai said: “For me, it was a story of a man who is just three feet one inch tall. That is it and nothing beyond it.” What made

him cast the “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…”

star as a dwarf in his yet un-titled film? “Mr. Khan… for this is

purely because nobody understands ordinariness better than him. I needed somebody who looked very confident and sure. The kind of person he is…he puts his heart and soul in a charac-ter,” said the co-producer of recently re-leased film “Nil Battey Sannata”.

Pratyusha Banerjee Suicide Case: Rahul Raj Gets Anticipatory Bail

Agency | Mumbai

The Bombay High Court today granted anticipato-ry bail to producer Rahul Raj Singh, accused of abetting the suicide of ac-tress Pratyusha Banerjee, after observing that prima facie there is no evidence to show that the accused “instigated or intended” the suicide. “From the statements of witnesses, it is clearly seen that harass-ment and disputes were there between the appli-cant accused (Rahul) and the victim (Pratyusha). But prima facie, there is nothing on record to show abetment,” Justice Mridula Bhatkar said. The court was hearing the application filed by Mr Singh seeking pre-ar-rest bail after the sessions

court rejected his plea. The High Court, while granting his application, directed Mr Singh to ap-pear before the Bangur Nagar police, which is probing the case, thrice a week for two weeks. “For an offence to be made out under section 306 of IPC (abetment to suicide) there should be instiga-tion, intentional aid or an intent that the person should commit suicide. It is necessary to show whether the accused had mens rea (intention),” the court said. It added that harassment or disputes can be a reason for a per-son to not like another person and take steps to end his or her life. “For that person, the behaviour of the other person may be the cause of his or her

death. However, for an offence of abetment to be proved, there should be evidence to show insti-gation, provocation and intention,” the court said. Justice Bhatkar further said that how a person will react to the situation is unpredictable and sen-sitivity differs from one person to another. “Under such circumstances, un-less the intention of the person held responsible for the suicide is brought on record prima facie, it cannot be said that it is abetment,” the judge said. The court in its chamber during the day heard the last telephonic conversa-tion between Rahul Raj Singh and Pratyusha ba-nerjee recorded on April 1 an hour before the ac-tress committed suicide.

Katrina Kaif to give Cannes film festival a miss

Katrina Kaif, who made her debut at Cannes Film Festival last year, is skip-ping this year’s edition of the prestigious event due to her film commit-ments. The 32-year-old ‘Fitoor’ star walked the Cannes red carpet in a scarlett gown last year, earning praise for her look. “Cannes is a fab-ulous platform for any artist to attend, and I really enjoyed the expe-rience last year. While the brand invited me

to attend Cannes again this year, I have had to regretfully decline the opportunity due to prior commitments. ”This has been an enormously busy year for me so far, and I am working on some amazing projects which are really keeping me on my toes. Nevertheless, although I will be giv-ing Cannes a miss this year, I wish the lovely L’Oreal Paris ambassa-dors who will proudly represent India the very best and hope to attend

next year,” Kaif said in a statement. The actress has recently wrapped up the shooting of her up-coming love story ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ and is cur-rently gearing up for the filming of sleuth drama ‘Jagga Jasoos’ opposite former boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor. The Cannes In-ternational Film Festival is scheduled to be held from May 11-21. Aish-warya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor will be representing the brand at event this year.

Roshan’s legal teamIn the ongoing war between Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut, the “Bang Bang” star’s legal team on Monday (April 25) claimed that the actress withheld truth from her lawyer. “It is quite obvious that his client has withheld the truth from him, and he has not been privy to the evidences until now,” Hrithik’s lawyers said in a statement. After Kangana’s emails to Hrithik

Deferring 4G rollout to delay RIl credit metrics improvement

Are you wondering what the best diet to prevent heart diseases is?

Agency | New Delhi

Significant delay in commercial launch of 4G tele-com services of Reliance Industries will impact expected improvement in the companys credit metrics, Moodys Investors Services said today. “The commercial launch of Reliances telecom ser-vice (Jio) has been delayed from our expectation of early 2016. Significant delays in commercial rollout will defer ebidta generation, which in turn will impact the expected improvement in cred-it metrics,” Moodys said in a note on RILs FY16 earnings. While RIL remains committed to com-mercially launch telecom service in 2016, Moodys said it did not “expect the telecom business to gen-erate positive cash flows for the next three years, as it will continue to require further investment over

the same time frame.”

The Mediterranean diet is your best bet against heart problems as a recent study suggests that it can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes in cardiovascular disease patients. The research of over 15,000 people in 39 countries around the world also showed that eating greater amounts of healthy food was more important for these people than avoiding unhealthy foods, such as refined grains, sweets, desserts, sug-ared drinks and deep-fried food - a “Western” diet. The study showed that for every 100 people eating the highest proportion of healthy Mediterranean foods, there were three fewer heart attacks, strokes or deaths compared to 100 people eating the least amount of healthy foods during nearly four years of follow-up from the time the participants joined the study. However, he warned that this did not mean that people could eat unhealthy foods with impunity.

Gearing up for his maid-en middleweight con-test, British professional boxing star Amir Khan today said that after the much-anticipated WBC title contest against Mex-ico s Canelo Alvarez, he is keen to take on Vi-jender Singh in the Indian bigwig’s own backyard. Speaking to Indian media from San Francisco ahead

of his fight against Alva-rez, scheduled in Las Ve-gas on May 7, Khan said he had to move up from welterweight as he just could not find a suitable opponent. The Olympic silver medallist and two-time world champion, will be up against an opponent who has been defeated just once by Floyd May-weather in his 48-fight career, and would be de-

fending his middle weight title for the first time since he won it last November. “This is my first challeng-er fight and I am training very hard to take on Cane-lo Alvarez on May 7,” said Amir when asked about his thoughts on the fight.“I had to increase my weight category by two levels to fight for the middleweight title as there weren t any boxers left to fight in my earlier category, and when Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao refused to fight with me the only choice left to me was to take on boxers at different levels,” he added.

Gujarat Higher Education Council Bill: Attempt to take away autonomy of varsities, roll it back

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Teaching and non-teach-ing staff of Gujarat Uni-versity (GU) and other universities in the state on Sunday held a discussion over the controversial Gujarat State Higher Edu-cation Council Bill, 2016, which was passed by the Assembly in the Budget Session. They demanded rollback of the Bill, al-leging it was an attempt by the BJP government to “snatch” autonomy of universities. The discus-sion was also attended by former vice-chancellor of Gujarat University and advisor to the govern-

ment on higher education A U Patel, who was chair-person of the committee tasked with drafting of the Bill. In his address, Patel assured the audience that their apprehensions and grievances would be ad-dressed once the govern-

We could have chased 200 as RCB’s bowling is weak, says Dwayne Smith

Sunvilla News | Rajkot

Gujarat Lions opening batsman Dwayne Smith says they would have faced no difficulty even chasing down a 200-plus target since the Royal Challeng-ers Bangalore attack lacks teeth. “Their bowling line up is not as strong and even a target of 200 runs could have been chased against them on this wick-et,” Smith said after Lions beat RCB by six wickets, chasing 181 in Rajkot on Sunday. “We won the first three matches and then lost a match against Sun-

risers Hydrabad, I am hap-py that Lions team has got back on winning track,” he added. The West Indies

batsman made quick-fire 32 off 21 balls with three fours and two sixes while opening the batting with Brendon McCullum (42). Skipper Suresh Raina (28) and Dinesh Karthik (not out 50) made useful con-tribution with the bat in Lions’ victory. Smith said Kane Williamson’s over in which he fetched 25 runs was turning point of the match.
