Dharamsala gangrape complaint found false, police say complainant’s motive being probed Agency : Dharamsala An alleged incident of gangrape that triggered student protests in the picturesque Himachal Pradesh town was a rumour circulated via social media, police said on Thursday. The news of the gangrape had gone viral on social media. But police called the allegation false as the complainant said during questioning that her only sibling was a brother, thereby ruling out the premise on which the rape complaint was made. The girl, named as the victim by the complainant, was identified and it was found that the two were not related, police said. The alleged victim told the police that no such incident happened and the complainant might have spread the rumour to malign her. As protests continued in the hill town on Thursday, the district chief of police issued a statement clarifying the matter. “We want to confirm that no such incident has taken place in Dharamsala,” Kangra superintendent of police Kapil Sharma said. DAY

“My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist,”

In a blatant case of religious discrimination, a Mum-bai-based diamond export company has rejected the job application of a business management graduate on the grounds that he is a Muslim, prompting the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) to take up the matter. Zeshan Ali Khan posted a screenshot of the “regret” email from a senior executive of the company on his Facebook page, which led to a na-tional outrage. “Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Mus-lim candidates,” read the mail sent by Hare Krish-na Exports Private Limited company, which enjoys global presence. Later lawyer and activist Shehzad Poonawalla filed a complaint to the NCM, Union Home Ministry and Chief Minister of Maharash-tra, seeking justice for the alleged case of discrim-ination. NCM chairperson Naseem Ahmed has ac-knowledged receipt of the petition. “If it is true, it is really unfortunate. We have received the petition this morning only and as per our set procedure, we will call for the comments of the respondent compa-ny and based on their response, we will decide the course of action,” Ahmed told Gulf News. The Modi government has taken notice of Zeshan’s case. “The Constitution of India forbids discrimination on the basis of religion or caste. A company can hire or fire anyone on the basis of merit, not on the basis of re-ligion,” Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Thursday. Hitting out at the Modi government, Zeshan told Gulf News over phone, “our Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about inclusive growth, but the reality is that private companies do not care about it. The compa-ny could have rejected me if they found I was not qualified enough. But they have rejected me simply because I am a Muslim. Sounds like a joke.” “At a time when PM Modi is visiting foreign countries and inviting them for investment and pushing ahead the ‘Make in India’ campaign, the leading export houses are rejecting local candidates for their religion,” he emphasised. Zeshan added that he will not accept a job from this company. “The executives of the com-pany called me today and said it was a typing error. They want me to believe it was a mistake. How can there be a mistake of such nature. I will never accept a job from this company,” he averred. Reacting to this, Zeshan’s father Ali Ahmed said that Muslims have been left behind in the process of development. “Religion cannot be a criterion for rejection from job. Only merit and demerit is the criterion. I never thought we will be treated in this manner. This is a clear cut case of religious discrimination. They always say Mus-lim families do not educate their children but I did. We condemn the policy of that company not allowing Muslims to work for them,” Ahmed said.

Telling tales via journeys: Bollywood’s latest routeAgency : New Delhi

Be it a train journey in “Chennai Express”, the National Highway journeys in “High-way” and “NH10”, a father-daughter jour-ney from Delhi to Kol-kata in latest entertainer “Piku” or a cruise trip in the forthcoming “Dil Dhadakne Do” - Bol-lywood filmmakers are telling fresh tales set around journeys, mode notwithstanding. This has also helped them to move away from studios and explore real locales. A case in point is the ab-

solutely splendid shot Rohit Shetty took of the Dudhsagar Falls in Goa. Then, there are shots of places like Varanasi which Shoojit Sircar has captured in “Piku”. This adds a distinct look to their stories and a wel-come change is the fact

that they are mostly looking within the coun-try for their locations. Of course, exceptions like “Queen” and Zoya Akhtar’s “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Dil Dhadakne Do” are al-ways there. They’re en-tertaining, nevertheless.

Jacqueline Fernandez: Good to learn new stuff Is Ranbir Kapoor feeling insecure after Bombay Velvet debacle?Agency : New Delhi

It seems actor Ranbir Ka-poor is still rattled by the failure of Bombay Velvet, his third flop in a row after Besharam and Roy. In an interview to NDTV, Ka-poor bared his heart on his state of mind post the film’s release. “There’s a sense of insecurity that’s starting to trend inside of me. I’m feeling a sense of friction where I really don’t know what’s happening with my career. I know what’s hap-pening with my work but I don’t know what’s going to happen with my career.”

Bombay Velvet, which was expected to hit the jackpot at the box office, failed miserably. It garnered Rs 5.20 crore on the first day of its release and recorded a meagre Rs 20.97 crore in its first week. The film’s bud-get was said to be in excess

of Rs 100 crore. Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming films Tamasha and Jagga Jasoos are also big budget films, and thus the pressure on him to deliver a blockbuster is going to remain the same in the coming months as well.

De Villiers, Mandeep star in Bangalore’s easy win against Rajasthan in IPL Eliminator

Agency : Mumbai

AB de Villiers com-bined with Mandeep Singh for a game-chang-ing partnership as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) eliminated Rajas-than Royals (RR) from the 2015 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a splendid 71-run win in Pune on Wednesday.De Villiers hit a brilliant 38-ball 66 and shared a match-win-ning 113-run stand with Mandeep Singh (54 not out) as Bangalore re-covered from a sluggish

start to post a challenging 180 for four after elect-ing to bat.Rajasthan had the proceedings firmly under their grip but they leaked 86 runs in the last six overs to let it slip.De Villiers’ 66 came off 38 balls with four six-es and as many fours while Mandeep took 34 balls for his unbeaten 54, which had seven fours and two sixes.Rajasthan never looked convincing in their chase as they kept losing wickets and even-tually folded for just 109 in 19 overs, built around Ajinkya Rahane’s fight-

ing 42.Rajasthan’s sur-prise capitulation reduced it to a lop-sided affair and their total was the low-est in the IPL playoffs.Bangalore will now play against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the sec-ond Qualifier on Friday, the winner of which will lock horns with Mum-bai Indians (MI) in the summit clash on Sunday. Rajasthan lost in-form Shane Watson (10) and Sanju Samson (5) cheap-ly and the onus was on Rahane and skipper Steve Smith to bring the side back in the contest.

New India coach should be able to take charge of Virat Kohli’s temperament: Bishan Singh Bedi

Agency : New Delhi

Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi feels that BCCI needs to ap-point a “strong coach” to guide the temperamental Test captain Virat Kohli, who has courted a lot of off-field controversies in recent times. “I believe Virat needs a good coach, who will be an able guide. That coach should be able to take charge of his tem-perament. He (Kohli) is so impulsive and it needs to change. Crick-et is not kabaddi or kho-

kho. If you want to play the game for a long time, you should be in control of your temperament,” the legendary left-arm spinner during an inter-action on Thursday. Bedi is not too happy with a section of media eulogis-ing Kohli’s “aggressive attitude”. “Media creat-ed this image of Kohli and media will destroy him also. He needs to be very careful. Every move of his will be monitored consistently. Wheth-er he is holding the fork in the right or left-hand

will also be scrutinised,” said Bedi, who is known for expressing his frank views. Asked whether there are strong person-alities who can comple-ment Kohli’s aggression and in-your face attitude, Bedi did not give a direct reply. “Look how Ravi Shastri and Sourav Gan-guly look at Kohli, might be completely different from how Sachin Ten-dulkar and Rahul Dravid look at him. Look cricket is a sport that teaches you humility and a lot of good values,” said Bedi.

IOA ticket blunder: Sad that no one from a nation of 120 cr will cheer us at Rio 2016, says Yogeshwar

Agency : New York

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A beautiful city in a beau-tiful country that is filled with tourists around the year. The city, which is hosting the next Olym-pic Games in August next year, naturally becomes a perfect holiday destina-tion for sports fans who like to travel. Tough luck, if you are from India though. In a gaffe that is sure to disappoint sports fans across the country, the Indian Olympic Asso-ciation (IOA) has failed to reserve their quota of tickets with the interna-tional body for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The tickets won’t go on sale in India, as reported by Headlines Today, since the IOA missed deadlines to complete the paper-

work with Internation-al Olympic Committee (IOC), despite their re-peated reminders. While the fans are at an obvious loss, the athletes are af-fected too. 2012 Olym-pic Bronze medallist, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt is extremely disappoint-ed by this IOA blunder. “It’s a sad thing. It makes a lot of difference when our own people come and

cheer us in the stadiums,” Yogeshwar told Firstpost. “We will feel sad if there is no one in the stands. A nation of 120 crore and no one from India to cheer is sad. When there is no support, it surely af-fects our performance.” Yogeshwar also said that there was a need for bet-ter administration from the IOA in face of this shocking lase.

Cook Agrees with Decision to Bar Pietersen from England Team

Agency : London

Alastair Cook denied Wednesday he gave an ul-timatum to England man-agement to relieve him of the captaincy if Kevin Pi-etersen was recalled, but agreed with Pietersen’s extended exile from the team. Cook’s comments at Lord’s, on the eve of the first test against New Zealand, were his first in public on the recent tur-moil in English cricket. Former captain Andrew Strauss was appointed di-rector of cricket and im-

mediately sacked coach Peter Moores, and told Pietersen, discarded since the 2013-14 Ashes se-ries, that he would not be considered until after the summer campaign. “I do agree with the decision,” Cook said of barring Piet-ersen. He declined to say why, with some despair. “This has been going on for 15 or so months. We’ve got to start really looking forward, we have to really, really focus on what’s important to us (as players).

Allround Mumbai Indians blow away Chennai Super KingsAgency : Mumbai

Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga all sparkled today as Mum-bai Indians continued their stunning turnaround in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015 and sealed their spot in the final of the multi-starrer tourna-ment. Simmons gave his side the perfect start, lay-ing a strong foundation which Pollard capitalized to the hilt. The allround-er slammed a blitzy 41 to give his side a daunting total of 187/6. Defending the total and with a noisy Mumbai crowd support-ing them, MI started well, but needed a superb spell from Harbhajan, including the dismissals of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni off consecutive

deliveries, to take full control of the game. Ma-linga ensured there was no fairytale comeback by CSK towards the end as he wrapped up the game with two quick wick-ets. Mumbai went on to claim a comfortable win - by 26 runs - and earn a deserved four-day break ahead of the final. Chas-ing 188 to take the direct

route to the final, CSK suffered an early blow when Dwayne Smith was at the receiving end of a horror LBW call in the very first over. Mi-chael Hussey and Faf du Plessis scored brisk-ly to put their side back on track, but Vinay Ku-mar accounted for the Australian to give MI to edge again.

80% in India think businesses are corrupt: EY surveyAgency : Mumbai

India has been ranked at No. 6 in a survey of 38 countries on unethical business practices, with 80% of the respondents in the country saying bribery is widespread. Interestingly, 66% of Indian respondents in the survey conducted by EY Fraud Investiga-tion & Dispute Services, said bribes in the form of gifts or cash were acceptable to win busi-ness. A full 35% of the respondents said adher-ing to anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies would harm their com-petitiveness. The survey of 3,800 employees in Europe, Middle East and Africa, apart from In-dia between December 2014 and January 2015 showed corruption is most rampant in emerg-ing markets. Business-es in these regions are under tremendous pres-sure to perform despite the market volatility,

geopolitical instability, oil shocks and econom-ic sanctions. The report said more than half of all managers across the globe were under in-creased pressure to look out for new revenue op-portunities, leaving them with few options. This has resulted in actions that expose businesses to significant fraud and bribery risks. In India, 59% of respondents said local companies manipu-late financial statements to show better perfor-mances. While 67% said economic growth was slower than expected, 81% felt managers were under increased pressure to identify new revenue opportunities.

Teaching workload of faculties in engineer-ing colleges increased by two hours a weekSunvilla News, Ahmedabad

RThe Gujarat state gov-ernment has increased the teaching hours of faculties by two hours in a week in govern-ment engineering col-leges. The action has been taken in view of the shortage of teachers in the state’s engineer-ing institutions. About 40 per cent of teaching posts are currently ly-ing vacant in all the 16 engineering colleges in the state. While the workload of princi-pals has been increased from existing four to six hours, those of pro-fessors from six to eight hours, associate profes-sors from 12 to 14 hours and assistant professors

from 16 to 18 hours. It includes teaching in classrooms and practi-cals in laboratories. A senior professor in LD College of Engineering, oldest engineering in-stitute of the state, said that their duty hours were from 10.30 to 6.10 p.m. and increasing the teaching workload by another half an hour did not matter. He said that teaching was complete-ly a different profession in which the teacher has to come to the class pre-pared beforehand. “It is not like an adminis-trative job where you don’t require to open books or read at home,” explained the professor seeking anonymity.

VMC to shift Butterfly Park to Ajwa GardenCorrespondent, Vadodara

Six months after the VMC awarded the work order for the construction of the controversial Butterfly Park inside Sayajibaug, popularly called Kamat-ibaug garden, a proposal before the Standing Com-mittee this week requests a “change of place” for the park to Ajwa Garden. The proposal seeks that the butterfly park should be allowed to move to Ajwa Garden instead of Sayajibaug as the project has seen much opposition from people, including morning walkers of Ka-matibaug. The proposal states that it is necessary to construct new gardens for the benefit of the cit-izens. “The Butterfly

Park in Sayajibaug was approved for a sum of Rs 6.83 crore, and M/s Satyam Constructions was awarded the con-tract in November 2014 for his tender worth Rs 6.36 crore. Accordingly, the contractor also com-menced work on the site. Currently, the work is in progress to construct the concrete walls that would be the boundary of the Butterfly Park. After

the contractor began his work, there were sever-al protests from morning walkers, senior citizens and political leaders in the city who submitted their petitions to the VMC.” The proposal states that a special meeting was called by the Municipal Commissioner on Febru-ary 25, in which a deci-sion was made to shift the Butterfly park to another location.

water use and so on. With the Indian government’s ambitious plan to build 100 smart cities, ex-perts are deliberating on ways to make the dream come true. The three-day TechSymp 2015 or-ganized by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on the theme of internet of things (IoT) got concluded on Friday with the promise to bring a white paper on

technology for smart cit-ies. The participants advo-cated inter-operability of technology and standard-ization as two major areas needing attention. Dr Anil K Roy, general co-chair of the event, said IEEE is already working on stan-dards such as architectural framework for IoT which will form the backbone of the smart grid for smart cities. “A panel will work on formulation and de-velopment of standards for cities. It will also help grading these smart cities - higher the grade, smarter the city. For smart cities, we have to integrate the system in the infrastruc-ture itself,” he said. He added that a white paper would set the ground for technology standardiza-tion for the industry.

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The Agriculture Produce Market Committees (AP-MCs) have decided to hold a meeting on May 31 to discuss the fallout of the state government notifica-tion that allows farmers to sell their farm produce di-rectly in the open market. The notification was is-sued on Tuesday. The noti-fication gives the farmers a free hand to decide where

they want to sell their veg-etables and fruits and this will allow them to decide the prices for the produce. Now, the farmers can di-rectly go to the shop own-ers and sell their produce. They will, however, have the option of going to the APMCs. The government is also planning to give special permission to the APMCs to the set up retail counters in various parts of the cities where they

operate. On May 31, AP-MCs discuss who would benefit the most in view of the government decision. He said even the traders in the APMC will suffer and hence if required they will make a representation to the state government. “We may be from the same par-ty but when it comes to the farmers, we will definite-ly inform the government of the ground reality,” he said.

Congress to focus on “corruption under BJP” in local polls: Solanki

Correspondent, Rajkot

The “failure” of Gujarat and Central government in “reducing corruption” will be the main plank on which the opposition Congress will contest the forthcoming local bod-ies elections in the state, a senior party leader said here today. “We are go-ing to highlight the state and Central governments’ failure in reducing cor-ruption in the local bod-ies elections scheduled to be held in next two months. This will be the prime issue to be raised by Congress,” the party unit president Bharatsinh Solanki said here.Without taking the name of Chief Minister Anandiben Pa-tel, Solanki alleged that

the state government was following the “legacy” of former Chief Minister Na-rendra Modi “who had do-nated huge (tracts of) land to industrialists.” “BJP government at Centre had made several promises, but failed to fulfill them. Congress workers will submit a memorandum to district collector and ask BJP MPs to prepare a re-port card of (their perfor-

mance) in last one year,” he said.Solanki and the party leaders were in the city to attend a state-lev-el event organised to pay tribute to former PM Ra-jiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary.“Con-gress has decided to orga-nise state-level functions in various districts and to-day’s programme was part of this policy,” the Con-gress leader said.

‘Saffron’ Makeover for Bus Stands Riles Opposition in Gujarat

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

A dash of saffron in Guja-rat has opposition parties seeing red. Bus stands across the BJP-ruled state are being repainted in a shade that parties like the Congress allege is politically loaded. Over two dozen bus stands in Ahmedabad and Gandhi-nagar, which used to be red, have gone saffron and the state-run road transport corporation says many more will follow over the next few days. Besides government re-sources, this makeover

is also using money from the constituency develop-ment funds of lawmakers. “By putting saffron on all bus stands the BJP gov-ernment is promoting its communal agenda. They are appeasing the prime minister (Narendra Modi) by painting the town saf-fron,” said Congress lead-er Manish Doshi. He also alleged corruption and favouritism in contracts. The state government has rubbished the allegations. It says the choice of co-lour was not driven by ideology but logic.

Road Widening Snaps Power in Bodakdev

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s apathy has left residents of Bodak-dev fuming this summer. The road widening project has been forcing residents to go without electricity for hours on end in this scorching heat. According to the residents, the work-ers dig up the road in such a manner that it damages the power supply lines along with telephone and

water lines. Pratik Ba-nerjee, secretary of Yash Towers, filed a complaint with the AMC against the contractor on Wednesday for repeatedly damaging electricity, water and tele-phone lines, and putting the residents to unneces-sary hardships. The res-idents say they had even drawn the attention of the contractors to the negli-gent attitude of the work-ers, but to no avail.
