QUOTE OF THE

DAYResults of local elections indicate that the BSP is regaining ground in uP

The BSP is back in the game in UP. The recent local bodies elections saw many BSP nominees winning at the cost of the BJP and the SP. In PM Narendra Mo-di’s model village in Varanasi, Jayapur, the BJP can-didate lost by over 800 votes. Candidates supported by the BJP could win only nine panchayat seats out of a total of 48 in Varanasi district. The BSP scored over the BJP in districts including Hathras and Aligarh. In Ambedkar Nagar district, the BSP won 25 of 43 panchayat seats. The results indicate that Dalit voters who did not back the BSP in the 2012 assembly polls or the 2014 general election are returning to the party. This win has boosted the morale of the BSP leader-ship, which is now gearing up for the 2017 assembly election. The Dalit base of the BSP had got fragment-ed after the 2007 assembly election, which the party won, for various reasons. The backlash to Mayawati’s sarvajan (inclusive) politics was a factor that caused the BSP’s defeat in the 2012 assembly election. Sar-vajan politics gave the impression that Mayawati was giving more importance to Brahmins and other upper castes than to Dalits. Sections of the Dalit communi-ty left the party and gravitated towards the SP ahead of the 2012 election. In 2014, many educated Dalits were attracted by Narendra Modi’s political agenda that mixed Hindutva and development. This section of the Dalit community is not happy with the BJP any more. Many Dalits who supported the BJP in 2014 feel that the party has not delivered development or created adequate employment. Besides, the plans and policies of the SP government have made Dalits wary of the Akhilesh Yadav dispensation. The callous atti-tude of the SP towards Dalit welfare issues, a total de-cline in the law and order situation, and the injustice meted out to Dalits by dominant groups are pushing the community towards the BSP. The single most im-portant reason for Dalit antipathy to the SP is the con-fiscation of their land by realtors. Dalits are also upset with the SP government’s decision to remove the pro-vision in the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act, 1950, that mandated that Dalits could sell their land to non-Dalits only after the ap-proval of the district collector. The SP government’s decision to remove fixed quotas in jobs designed for employment promotion among Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) has also made the Dalits insecure. Besides, the government took steps to demote promoted SC and ST officials in the state. The insecurity among Dalits due to these government decisions is gradually transforming into silent support for Mayawati.

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor’s relationship has been out in the open for a long time now. The cou-ple took a step forward in their relationship as they decided to live to-gether in an apartment in Carter Road, Bandra. Al-though the duo never re-ally shared their relation-ship status out in the open, they haven’t denied their relationship either. What better proof when talking about each other at events and always being together at parties! But well, while the rumours of them get-ting married are rife, the Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Ka-

A big proof of the same was learnt when the duo attended a party together which also had Ranbir’s father, Rishi Kapoor. Katrina sweetly greeted her beau’s father with a light peck on the cheek and asked him, “Hi Papa, how are you?” Well well, look at this! The couple may not confront about their future plans but this sure is an affirma-tive sign of how blissful their relationship is and where it might lead to!

Broadly speaking, re-makes are of two kinds. One that stays faithful to the original to the extent of becoming a frame to frame copy and the other where the makers take the core idea and give it a re-gional flourish. Cheekati Rajyam (simultaneously made as Thoongavanam in Tamil), adapted from the French film Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night), takes the original storyline and peppers it with asides that one has come to expect from a Kamal Haasan star-rer of late. In the middle of a sequence in a nightclub, a television channel airs a news clipping of a su-perstar’s film — Pancha-

vataram — running into rough weather. In the bar, a drunk character Subba Rao gloats that it was he who stalled the release and argues why should a superstar give ‘messag-es’ instead of sticking to song, dance and comedy. That argument is irrele-vant to Cheekati Rajyam’s plot but is a throwback to the time when Kamal Haasan’s own films had to cross similar hurdles. This reference to his real life is reminiscent of Uttama Villain, where references to his life and filmography were aplenty. At its core, Cheekati Rajyam has a simple plot of Diwakar (Kamal Haasan), a cop with Narcotics Control

Bureau, having to save his son from the clutch-es of cocaine peddler and nightclub owner Vittal Rao (Prakash Rao). In the process of doing it, he too comes under the scanner of fellow cops Mallika (Trisha) and Kishore. Busting the crime network and exposing corrupt cops is one part of the story. Within the framework of a thriller, the makers weave in back stories of pivotal characters. Tumultuous relationships come to the fore. There’s a divorced wife (Asha Sharath) who is still bitter and a son sulking at the workahol-ic father who doesn’t re-member if the boy plays football or cricket.

Former South African captain and administra-tor, Dr Ali Bacher, re-cently said that the key to South Africa’s suc-cess, and failure, are Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers. How heavily South Africa de-pend on the trio reflects in their team’s perfor-mance. The three came to India with Test av-erages in excess of 50. While Amla has man-aged to retain it in that region despite failures in the three innings this se-ries, du Plessis’s dipped below 50 following scores of 0, 1, 0. Only de Villiers has been among runs, scoring two

As South Africa coach Russell Domingo has said on more than one occasion in this se-ries, Amla is too good a player to fail repeatedly and that one big knock is not far away. Even Amla knows that. With their openers Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl not pro-viding the desired start, the onus is on the trio to shape the South African fate. “Nagpur is a differ-ent Test and hopefully that’s when it starts,” Amla spoke not only for himself but also for his team. “Opening is quite a demanding position to be in. Delhi Dynamos look like an unit that is breathing under manager Roberto Carlos. The former Bra-zilian and Real Madrid legend, has injected a new belief to the side as they beat FC Pune City 3-1 at home, in the ongo-ing Indian Super League 2015. Delhi’s three points in the kitty sees them overtake Atletico de Kol-kata, and take the second place. Carlos’ next idea

would definitely be to get more goals as they trail Goa on difference of the same. Carlos who is also their marquee player, has been productive in set-ting new ideas from hav-ing four skippers in the team, and also develop the team’s defensive unit. The Indian players too are playing well under Carlos and together the side are looking like an unit that mean business. Given the tight nature of the table, Delhi’s win on

Thursday have made the tally more interesting. After last year’s ordinary performance, Delhi have impressed this season and look like a force along-side FC Goa and Atletico de Kolkata. Carlos has been a winner at all fronts with both Brazil and club Real Madrid. The former galactico’s winning hab-it is a high boost for the Dynamos. Under Carlos, Delhi look fresher, and the players have respond-ed to their manager’s call.

corner. Raghunath made no mistake as he convert-ed it to restore parity as the teams went into the half-time break locked at 1-1. The Indians start-ed the second half at fast pace and clinched the lead when Raghu-nath smashed home from another penalty corner just before the end of the fourth quarter. The Australians pressed hard for the equaliser but the Indian defenders suc-

cessfully blocked all the rival attacks. However, a penalty corner giv-en in the 58th minute to Australia spoiled India’s chances of registering an important win, as the vis-itors converted it through Ciriello to level the score at 2-2. “It was an import-ant match, and we were tested on all fronts. The good news is that we have shown composure and we played with the hunger to win.

near as much as I would have liked anyway, but I’m feeling strong and fit for this game,” added the 26-year-old. “I’m ready for battle. I want to keep trying to give my best, to work hard and to help the team win.” Real surren-dered top spot to Barca

when they were beaten at Sevilla and another defeat on Saturday will see them drop six points behind their arch rivals after 12 games. Atletico Madrid, the 2014 champions, are a point behind Real in third ahead of their match at Real Betis on Sunday.

87th minute, successfully converting a penalty that was awarded to the hosts after Zodingliana Toch-hawng was felled by vis-iting player Govin Singh. Romanian marquee play-er Adrian Mutu lived upto the tag, scoring a conso-lation goal (90+5) in the added time from a beau-tiful freekick. The win, a much-needed one, takes the Dynamos to second place with 18 points from

10 games, while Pune City FC held on to their fourth place despite the reverse. Frustrated with the run of three draws in front of their home crowd, the Dynamos showed intent straight-away. The defence, led by the ever-reliable Ri-ise, and skipper Anderson Sebastiao de Souza, did not let the likes of Adrian Mutu and Kalu Uche to penetrate.

In Surat a set of five audio clips of a phone conversa-tion purportedly between a 19-year old voter and the city’s municipal corpora-tion candidates is being circulated on WhatsApp. This “first time voter” calls himself “Manish” and rings up candidates to test them their basic knowledge about the state, its districts, talu-kas and villages, the CM, governor, etc., and then he expresses concern “about not wasting his vote”. To the Patidar candidates he promptly says, “No, don’t worry I won’t ask about Patidars.’’ While the Su-rat social media voice

The Supreme Court to-day issued notice to Gu-jarat government on a plea challenging the High Court order declaring ‘right to fly’ as funda-mental right of the birds which effectively banned keeping them in cage. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dat-tu sought response from the government on the PIL filed by Pet Lovers Association on the issue. Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for the association, said that

there are already laws in place to protect birds who can be domesticated. He said that the High Court order that they have the fundamental right to fly is a flawed one and re-quired to be struck down. The Gujarat High Court, in 2011, had held that the birds cannot be caged as they have the right to fly. Earlier, the court had refused to entertain an appeal against the High Court order on the ground of delay and had rather suggested to Khurshid to file a PIL instead.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today warned party candidates that if anyone of them gets 100-150 more votes compared to other par-ty candidate in panel, then he/she would not be given any post in five years of rule, including the post of Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman. Anandiben said, “You need to take care that cross voting don’t take place any-where. If there’s a gap of 100-150 votes, no post will be given to winning candidate for five years, whether it’s Mayor’s post or Standing com-mittee.” She was speak-ing in Rajkot in public meeting held for Rajkot Municipal Corporation

election, polling for which is going to take place on 22 November along with five other municipal corporations in Gujarat. It should be noted that in 2010 mu-nicipal corporation elec-tions, BJP had made rule that any candidate who gets 300 or more votes compared to any other candidate in panel, such winning candidate would not be given any post by party in civic body for next five years as a pun-ishment. This rule was made to prevent individ-ual campaign by power-ful candidate, which may result into defeat of par-ty’s weaker candidates in panel. There’s panel of four candidates per ward in municipal corporation elections from BJP.

clips might not have any bearing on this election, they do indicate that the Patidar agitation has cre-ated a voter who is aware of his rights. From the Surat sub-jail Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor Hardik Patel who is booked for

sedition and is unlikely to be out on bail anytime soon, has announced his successors – a team of 11 Patidars who will lead the agitation and the anti-BJP campaign, even as his father plays his spokes-person since he went to jail. In the absence of any

major infrastructure proj-ect for the government to show off, this time the Pa-tidar vote might be a re-ality check for the BJP in the forthcoming munic-ipal and panchayat polls on November 22 and 29, respectively. For Chief Minister Anandiben Pa-tel, the toughest test is to neutralize the impact

of the Patidar unrest, es-pecially in the panchayat elections. In 2010, Nar-endra Modi led the cam-paign and ensured victory for the BJP. He set a prec-edent for the chief minis-ter’s active involvement in local body elections. That was also the year when projects under the UPA’s Jawaharlal Nehru

National Urban Renew-al Mission (JNNURM) like the Bus Rapid Tran-sit Systems (BRTS), river front drainage and urban housing projects in Ahmedabad, Vadoda-ra, Surat and Rajkot had touched people’s lives, and Modi smartly showed them off as his achieve-ments.
