Agency : Kabul Harbhajan Singh’s burn- ing desire to win his India jersey back was answered in the affirmative on Wednesday as the BCCI selectors picked the vet- eran offspinner for the one-off Test during the Bangladesh tour. Harbha- jan has had a successful IPL 8 for Mumbai Indians, picking up 16 wickets and leading them to the final of the tournament. Harbha- jan last played for India in March 2013, so he will be returning to India colours after a gap of more than two years. However, it re- mains to be seen whether skipper Virat Kohli picks him in the eleven consid- ering R Ashwin is also part of the squad. “We have named two offspinners since Bangladesh have six left-handed batsmen in their squad. Other young offspinners were also dis- cussed with the skipper Virat Kohli,” said chief se- lector Sandeep Patil. “We received requests for ‘rest’ by some of the players, but considering Bangladesh’s recent form, we wanted to have bench strength on tour,” Patil added. Patil and BCCI secretary Anu- rag Thakur also informed that the names of Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gam- bhir were not discussed. Contrary to reports, the selectors didn’t rest any of the seniors and picked the best squad available. Two noticeable change in the Test squad was the absence of MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja. While Dhoni retired from the lon- ger format during India’s tour of Australia last year, Jadeja has reportedly been dropped on form. Suresh Raina too has been left out of the Test squad after his miserable return to the whites with a pair in Aus- tralia. Legspinner Karn Sharma, however, has re- tained his place. Dhoni’s retirement means Wrid- dhiman Saha becomes India’s first-choice Test wicketkeeper. Gavaskar said the selection of top-choice players shows that India are not taking Bangladesh lightly. Mukesh Ambani Keeps Salary Capped at Rs 15 Crore for 7th Year Agency : New Delhi Reliance Industries’ Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani kept his annual salary capped at Rs 15 crore for the seventh year in a row even as the remuneration of most directors declined marginally. His remuneration for 2013- 14 included Rs 4.16 crore as salary, perquisites and allowances of Rs 60 lakh, retirement benefits of Rs 83 lakh and Rs 9.41 crore as commission on profit. In the previous year, while his salary and perquisites and allowances were the same, he got commission of Rs 9.42 crore and Rs 82 lakh in retirement benefits. Mr. Ambani voluntarily capped his compensation at Rs 15 crore in October 2009 amid a debate over right-sizing of CEO salaries. Jung annuls AAP govt’s appointments; Kejriwal banks on public support Agency : New Delhi Escalating his confronta- tion with the Aam Aad- mi Party government, Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday cancelled all appointments made by it in the last four days, as- serting he was the sole au- thority in matters of order- ing transfer and posting of bureaucrats. In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Lt Governor challenged AAP govern- ment’s order to bureau- crats not to follow his di- rectives without securing approval from the CM or any other minister, main- taining he has the power to decide on transfers and postings. Mr. Jung also contested AAP govern- ment’s instructions to the officials to not route files through his office, saying he has been vested with power to decide on ma- jor policy issues. In the letter, Mr. Jung explained constitutional provisions and norms laid down in Government of NCT of Delhi Act and Transaction of Business rules of the Delhi Government, and asked the AAP govern- ment to follow the rules and procedures. Mr. Jung said orders pertaining to transfers and postings by AAP govt in the last four days were not valid as they did not have his ap- proval. In a directive on Monday, Mr. Kejriwal had asked the bureaucrats including the Chief Sec- retary to first consult him and other Ministers before acting directions from the LG. On Tuesday, both Mr. Kejriwal and Jung had taken their bitter fight to President Pranab Mukher- jee, accusing each other of violating the Constitution and overstepping their re- spective jurisdictions. QUOTE OF THE

DAY

Editors’ Picks

An unsurprising first year in powerA year after coming to power, Narendra Modi hasn’t proved his critics wrong; he is failing his support-ers. Narendra Modi remarkable victory last year was possible because he made the Bharatiya Janata Par-ty attractive beyond its core Hindu nationalist vote. From a low base of 7.74% in 1984—the first year the BJP fought elections in its current form—the par-ty’s popular vote had risen to about a fifth of India’s electorate by 2009 (when it got 18.8% of the vote). Its share had otherwise hovered around 20-22%; its highest share had been 25.59% in 1998. Modi took the BJP’s vote to 31%, a 13 percentage-point shift over 2009. Modi did so by attracting new voters, some of whom included those too young to know about the massacres in Gujarat in 2002. Many felt India needed to respond robustly to terrorism and believed Modi would do what Manmohan Singh wouldn’t. This generation had grown up in post-re-form India, taking an India of malls and cellphones for granted, impatient when the growth rate slowed. Modi also attracted many older voters who professed to be pro-markets and who felt the solution to India’s myriad problems lay in private enterprise. (Business can indeed create the prosperity that can help solve those problems, but solving those problems is not necessarily business’ responsibility). These new supporters gave the BJP that extra edge, which gave the party a parliamentary majority. To win in 2019, the BJP will need them and build on that vote. How-ever, if the BJP returns to power in 2019, it will be because of the opposition’s failures. A year after the elections, it’s surprising that many are surprised and disappointed with the government. I’m not. Forget the unattainable rhetoric of bringing black money from Switzerland back home. Recall instead what the experts thought Modi would do: streamline the bureaucracy, make it easier to do business, and make development his priority. Other than progress on a nationwide goods and services tax, which the pre-vious government had worked hard to legislate but which the BJP-ruled states—including Modi in Gu-jarat—resisted, there have been few concrete gains. Even the amendment to the land acquisition law, which the BJP would like passed, and which is os-tensibly pro-business, actually violates a core prin-ciple of free market economics—property rights. It is puzzling to see the number of business leaders and economists, who seem to think nothing wrong with the idea of compulsory purchase of land, who cite the doctrine of eminent domain, as though it is a desirable doctrine even if the acquisition may not serve a public purpose. To disregard the customary rights of the poor and appropriate land they use or work on at a price that may bear no relation to what the market price might be a few years hence after the land has been developed (after being financed by loans and public debt) and allow gains to accrue to a private business, is hardly free market economics.

Bollywood fashionis-ta Sonam Kapoor made all heads turned as she made her first appear-ance on the red carpet at the French Riviera. Flaunting her cobalt blue

floor-sweeping gown, created by designers Ralph & Russo, Bol-lywood actress Sonam Kapoor took the centre stage at the 68th Cannes International Film Fes-tival. The 29-year-old,

who made her fifth Cannes appearance on Saturday representing L’Oréal Paris, sent the shutterbugs in frenzy as she walked the red car-pet in the striking blue gown paired with a matte orange lip colour. The flowing gown was com-plemented with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti san-dals and dainty Chopard earrings. Sonam looked diva in its true sense. The “Khoob-surat” actress has mostly impressed fashion crit-ics worldwide with her sartorial choices every year. Inside Priyanka Chopra’s diary: Being a ‘TV virgin’ and confessions on ‘Quantico’

Agency : New Delhi

Here’s a scene: a famous actor, at home, sleeping. News comes in that she’s got a coveted role in an upcoming TV series. Will she be woken from her slumber by a personal valet carrying a silver tray with a sealed envelope? Would an army of domestic help and personal assistants wait in pin-drop silence for the actor to wake up and then pop champagne bottles? If you’re Priyanka Chopra, then what happens is what’s happened to almost every kid, usually on the morning of exam results being announced -- her mum beat her door down and yelled at Chopra to get up already. “Wake

up, wake up, wake up!” I could hear my mom calling out to me as she simultaneously banged my bedroom door down. I somehow stumbled out of bed, suddenly worried that something bad had happened. These lines are from Chopra’s diary, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, Chopra

decided to keep a record of what was going on in her life earlier this month. “It’s an old-school version … no laptops or iPads for this one,” Chopra told THR. “I simply pen my thoughts, emotions and experiences … I believed it would help me relive and also relish some of the finer moments.”

MI canters into the final with a handsome victory

Mumbai Indians soared on wings of confidence into its third IPL final, beating league-toppers Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier. CSK was on course before plunging downhill, managing only 162 in 19 overs to hand the home team an exhilarating 25-run victory. Dwayne Smith flicked and missed at a Lasith Malinga deliv-ery on the leg stump, and then looked around be-mused as the MI fielders ran towards the Lankan in celebration of a leg-before dismissal. Mike Hussey turned aggressor, swing-ing an effortless six off Vinay Kumar high into the mid-wicket stands. The bowler got his man, slanting across for a nick behind. Rohit Sharma de-

The last time Mumbai FC won an I-League match, the weather around the country was cooler, Ne-pal hadn’t been struck by an earthquake and Aus-tralia were still to win the cricket World Cup. As many as 80 days have passed since Mumbai FC posted a win - a 3-1 ver-

dict over Salgaocar - on the last day of Febru-ary. Thereafter, Mumbai FC have drawn six and lost one -0-6 to Shillong Lajong. Mumbai FC’s struggle to avoid getting drowned in the deep end of the I-League pool has continued. For the record, they are seventh in the 11-team table with 18 points,

but have just one point more than bottom-ranked team Salgaocar. Mum-bai FC, having drawn their last six games, have just two more matches to play. If they don’t win against East Bengal at the Cooperage on Wednes-day, they could be in real danger of facing the axe. East Bengal will be no pushovers. The Kolk-ata team, with 26 points, won’t surely be in the mood to hand any free-bies to Mumbai. They do not have the services of their pivotal player Me-htab Hussain, but they are here to win and earn those three points to en-sure they finish as “high as possible”.

Pakistan umpire wants to forget 2009 attackAgency : Lahor

“ Ahsan Raza is look-ing forward to umpiring Pakistan’s match against Zimbabwe, putting be-hind him the morning when he was shot twice in an attack that slammed the door closed on inter-national cricket in Paki-stan. The 2009 ambush by gunmen on Sri Lanka’s team and match officials on their way to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium killed six people and one of the bullets left Raza with a damaged lung. “I don’t want to look back and

recall what happened six years ago, it was dread-ful,” Raza told The Asso-ciated Press on Wednes-day. “It was not easy (to recover) with so many stitches all around my stomach and one of the bullets even damaged my right lung.” The attack in this eastern Pakistani city killed six police officers and brought a sudden stop to international cricket in the country, one of the world’s leading cricketing nations. Raza was travel-ing in a small bus behind the bus carrying Sri Lan-

ka’s team. That bus was bravely driven through intense gunfire to the protection of the Gaddafi Stadium. The smaller bus also came under intense fire. It was carrying in-ternational umpires Si-mon Taufel, Steve Davis and match referee Chris Broad, as well as Raza. Six years on and 40-year-old Raza wants to forget that dreadful morning of March 3. It took Raza nearly a year to recover completely but he was back on the field as um-pire in 2010.

Gold monetisation scheme: Interest on deposits to be tax-free

Agency : New Delhi

The draft gold moneti-sation scheme also pro-vides for incentives to the banks, while individuals and institutions can de-posit as low as 30 gms of gold, while the inter-est earned on it would be exempt from income tax as well as capital gains tax. The stock of gold in India that is held by peo-ple of the country that is ‘neither traded nor mon-etised’ is estimated to be over 20,000 tonnes, which would be worth about Rs 60 lakh crore at the current market price. A large amount of gold is also held by temples and other religious in-stitutions. However, the

draft scheme does not specifically mention the kind of institutions that would be covered under it. India is one of the larg-est consumers of gold in the world and imports as much as 800-1,000 tonnes of the metal each year. As per the draft guide-lines, a person or institu-tion holding surplus gold can get it valued from BIS-approved hallmark-ing centres, open a Gold Savings Account in banks for a minimum period of one year and earn inter-est in either cash or gold units. The Finance Minis-try has sought comments from stakeholders on the draft gold monetisation scheme by June 2.

Facebook’s plan for WhatsApp: To help businesses to reach out to customers

Agency : New York

Facebook is looking at how WhatsApp can help businesses reach new customers. According to a Bloomberg report, Face-book might allow brands to contact customers through WhatsApp. “We think that enabling that B2C messaging has good business potential for us,” David Wehner, Face-book’s chief financial of-ficer, said at a JPMorgan technology conference Monday in Boston, re-ports Bloomberg. “As we learn those things, I think there’s going to be opportunities to bring some of those things to WhatsApp, but that’s more longer-term than the near-term.” The Bloomberg report adds, “WhatsApp may use

some functions that are being tested with Face-book Messenger.” Face-book bought WhatsApp last year for $22 billion, the biggest deal in tech-nology history so far, and for investors the biggest question has been how Facebook plans to convert WhatsApp into a viable business idea. WhatsApp lost $232 million in the first half of 2014 alone. With WhatsApp, one of the key features has been that the app remains ad-free. Also after the first year users are expected to pay $1 for the app but many of them get an extension to con-tinue using WhatsApp for free. Where busi-nesses connecting with WhatsApp goes, this is not radically new. In In-dia, many restaurants, home delivery services have turned to WhatsApp and users can just send a message via the app plac-ing their order and it will be delivered.

BCCI technical committee proposes several changes to domestic cricket structure

Agency : Mumbai

The technical commit-tee of the BCCI met in Mumbai on Tuesday, proposing several chang-es to structures and sys-tems in domestic cricket. First, the Ranji Trophy points system seems set to be overhauled. It has been proposed to abol-ish the current system of awarding 3 points for the first innings lead and 1 point for the other side. Instead, a bonus point will be awarded to a team scoring 300 runs in 85 overs, and a bonus point to a team taking 7 wick-ets in 85 overs. Howev-er, the current system of awarding 6 points for an outright win and a bo-nus point if applicable, will continue. The Du-leep Trophy for 2016 has also been postponed, be-cause India will host the ICC World Twenty20 in March-April 2016. It was also proposed to revamp the current format of the

Deodhar Trophy and have three teams partici-pating - the winner of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and two teams picked by the national selectors. The Committee praised the ef-forts of the BCCI to curb the menace of ‘chucking’ (illegal bowling actions) and the remedial steps taken in this regard. It has avowed to follow ICC protocols in this regard. The One-Day Inter-State Seniors’ tournament and the Syed Mushtaq Ali

T20 tournament will also be reformated by forming four groups from across the country, as against the current zonal system. “It was a fruitful discussion with an increased focus on strengthening domes-tic cricket. We hope that some of the measures suggested will make do-mestic cricket more inter-esting and challenging,” Anil Kumble , who is the chairman of the Technical Committee, said accord-ing to a press release.

The state government has decided to launch a statewide drive to curb malnutrition, and address common health problems among children in the state in the 0-6 age group. 6 Rajasthan tigers in Kuno, MP afraid of losing lions

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Rajasthan seems to be losing its tigers to Mad-hya Pradesh. The move-ment of tigers from Ranthambore national park in Rajasthan to Ku-no-Palpur wildlife sanc-tuary has established the natural corridor be-tween the two sanctu-aries is functional. In April 2013, the Supreme Court had ordered trans-location of Asiatic lions from Gujarat’s Gir sanc-tuary to Kuno-Palpur. Interestingly, instead of rejoicing over the grow-ing number of tigers in Kuno, forest officials of the state are worried in view of a petition filed by a Gujarat-based NGO, Wildlife Conservation

Trust-Rajkot, pending in the Supreme Court. The NGO has joined as par-ty to the petition filed by the Rajasthan govern-ment claiming that there is a possibility of conflict between the two big cats because a natural corri-dor of movement exists between Kuno and Ran-thambore. Sources in the Gujarat forest department said that the tigers named, T-38 and T-71 — the latter is cub of the tiger named, T-30 — was first pho-tographed in Kailadevi wildlife sanctuary. The same T-71 tiger has now established its territory in Kuno. (Kailadevi national park is a part of the Ranth-ambore tiger reserve.)

Science admission in GU to be onlineSunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Gujarat University has be-gun online admissions for the 2,800 seats in seven science colleges in the city, barring St Xavier’s Col-lege. GU stated that stu-dents seeking admission to first year BSc courses will have to apply online, while

allotment of seats at these colleges will be offline. GU has decided to call 500 students every day and will allocate seats according to merit from June 20 to June 27. Officials said science admissions are taken up after the first round of allotment of

seats for the degree en-gineering colleges. Vice chancellor M N Patel ad-mitted that this year there might be problems in ad-missions for students of the Biology Group as around 55,000 students took the board exam against 41,000 last year.

3,000 forms filled for BCom, BBA, BCA coursesSunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Around 3,000 students have filled in forms in first two days of admissions to first-year Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Computer

Administration and five-year integrated MSCIT courses. Admissions be-gan on May 18. The uni-versity got around 35,000 admission forms against the 50,000 forms printed last year. The authorities said that last year about 37,000 forms were filled and hence the universi-ty got only 35,000 forms printed this year. Univer-sity authorities said stu-dents will have to fill at least 15 choices of college in the form. “If a student doesn’t provide 15 choic-es, his form will not be accepted by the system,” said vice chancellor M N Patel. He further said that there are 71 colleges with a capacity to admit 71,000 students. Based on the success of these procedures, Gujarat Uni-versity will also imple-ment them for Master of Commerce admissions.

Patel said there will be no separate sports quota reserved, but the univer-sity will give priority to students who have rep-resented the state or dis-trict at the national level or at state-level sports competitions. The vice chancellor said that since students commit errors in filling forms, GU has decided to organize sem-inars at 10 colleges in the city. The first seminar will be at GU senate hall on Thursday. Patel said that the first allotment of seats will be done on June 26, and students will be informed via SMS about their admission. The sec-ond merit list will be de-clared on July 5, he said. Officials said academic studies for the first year will begin from July 1, while second and third year studies will begin from June 15.
