QUOTE OF THE

DAYBihar polls: divisive politics dominated the Bihar campaign

The strangest things happen in politics, especially at election time and particularly in the state of Bihar where, in essence, the fight is between Prime Min-ister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Ku-mar. To the best of my knowledge and belief, no PM has ever spent so much time and energy on holding rallies during a state assembly election as Modi has done in Bihar. For his part, Nitish has entered into an alliance with his bitterest rival, Lalu Prasad, who cannot contest the election because of his convic-tion in the massive fodder scam case. He is busy, therefore, promoting his dynasty. In this context, it is surprising that the reservation of seats in leg-islatures and government jobs for Dalits, Adivasis and OBCs should have become such a big bone of contention between the two sides. In all fairness, it must be acknowledged that the starting point of the escalating dispute was a statement by Mohan Bhag-wat, the chief of the Sangh Parivar, at the beginning of the election campaign. He blandly suggested that the time had come for the appointment of a commit-tee to review the entire system of reservations. He added that economic plight, rather than caste, should be the deciding factor in this regard. From the RSS point of view, this makes sound sense. There can be no Hindu Rashtra if Hindu society is not solidly united. Caste will surely be an instrument to frag-ment it. But Bhagwat seems not to have realised that his plea would create a huge problem for Modi and his righthand man, Amit Shah. They moved fast to slam the jubilant cry of caste leaders that the BJP had served notice that it would abolish the existing reservations. They emphatically iterated that their party favoured caste-based reservations and would stick to them. At his next election rally, the PM spoke about a “quota conspiracy”. Lalu and Nitish, he declared, were “conspiring” to snatch away a pro-portion of reservations from the Dalits, Mahadalits, OBCs and EBCs to give these to “another commu-nity”. He must have had reasons not to name the community. But Shah removed all ambiguity on this subject. He proclaimed that if the BJP lost the elec-tion in Bihar for any reason, Pakistan would explode crackers. He explained that in order to placate his “vote bank”, Nitish never arrested terrorists, which endeared him to Pakistan. Even if Nitish and Lalu win by a landslide, they will not be able to amend the Constitution, which is Parliament’s job. In any case, why would they “snatch from the plates of Dalits and backwards and serve it to the minorities”?

“First time in the history of our country, a fascist organisation that is openly opposed to the ideology and values of the Indian Constitution has acquired decisive power over the union of India.” - Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday

Selena Gomez’s life has been constantly under scrutiny ever since she started her showbiz jour-ney at the age of seven and the former Disney star says it is strange to grow up in the pub-lic eye. The 23-year-old singer, however, is keen to prove herself despite the constant focus on her personal life. “I have lived some life. I now get it. My goals have sur-passed me. I just want to keep striving. There have been a lot of ups and downs. “It is really awk-ward growing up in front of everybody. I am just

trying to figure out how to do it,” Gomez said in an interview in Cancun, Mexico while promot-ing her latest film “Ho-tel Transylvania 2”. Her romance with pop star Justin Bieber was a con-stant fodder for paparaz-zi but Gomez says she does not regret it and her song ‘Heart Wants What It Wants’ was her way of talking about it. “It is ob-vious I have been in love. I don’t regret anything. I wholeheartedly loved someone and I don’t re-gret that at all. “The song was my way of talking about what everybody was talking about. It was not bashing. It was like

‘I don’t care what peo-ple say, this is what I felt, this is what I feel and this is how I am going to say it’. Then I left it alone.” Gomez says “Revival”, her latest album which released last month, has been a “big goal” for her. “This album has been a big goal of mine. I am executive producing it. I wrote more than half of the album. Now I can say ‘I have been through things because when I am 15, why am I singing about heartbreak? I don’t know what it is. I don’t think I have even re-motely felt that’. But the kind of life I have lived, I have a lot to say.”

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Saturday led a march to Rashtrapati Bhavan alleging that the “award-wapsi” campaign over the ‘growing intol-erance’ was to defame the country by projecting a “wrong” picture of the situation. “India is a very tolerant country. Some people have coined the term ‘growing intoler-ance’. They are very few. Not every Indian thinks like that. We are secular people. We do not believe in pseudo-secularism, se-lective outrage or selec-tive patriotism,” Kher,

who is the spouse of BJP MP from Chandigarh Kir-ron Kher, told reporters. “We had a meeting with a lot of writers, artistes, filmmakers and they also believe that there is no in-tolerance in the country... This march is a symbolic gesture on part of a lot of people over here who say India is one and free of intolerance,” the 60-year-old said. Many filmmak-ers and artistes from the fraternity including Mad-hur Bhandarkar, Ashoke Pandit, Priyadarshan, Manoj Joshi, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and writer Madhu Kishwar joined

the march to hand over a memorandum signed by more than 40 person-alities including actress Raveena Tandon. Bhan-darkar, a National Award winner, alleged that those involved in the protest over intolerance had op-posed Prime Minister Narendra Modi before he was elected, which raised questions about their in-tention. “The projection that is happening for the past few days is very sad. Arun Jaitley says it is a matter for the executive to decide. nion Finance Minister Arun Jaitley spoke out against the fact that the Supreme Court is de-liberating on the issue of Aadhaar being universally implemented saying that it is up to the government to decide the methodology of governance, not the courts. “The need for this (Aadhaar) and the util-ity for this has been universally recognised across States. We are at a situation where there is a chal-lenge pending in court and normally courts entertain a challenge which are judicially determinable. As to what should be the methodology adopted in gover-nance is not a judicially determinable matter. It is a matter for the executive government to decide,” Mr. Jaitley said while summing up the day’s proceed-

ings at the Delhi Economic Conclave on Friday.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has sold over a million units in the quarter ended September 30, growing about 45 percent sequentially. “We have had our best ever quarter (July-September) with sales of more than one million units. We have been witnessing about 45 percent sequential growth for the last three quarters,” Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain said. However, the sales numbers are in con-trast to data shared by research firm Counterpoint Research which in a report said Xiaomi had seen a drop in shipments sequentially due to fierce com-petition from Lenovo and Micromax’s Yu. Jain said the sales were led by a strong demand for Redmi 2 Prime smartphones that are assembled at a plant run by Foxconn in Andhra Pradesh. He, however, declined to give specific shipment details. Mi.com site, which sells Xiaomi smartphones and other accessories to consumers through a marketplace model, was attracting millions of customers, he said. Xiaomi had started its own e-commerce por-

tal in June this year.

Would the other, non-partner chipset makers be upset? One of the first things I’d hope Goo-gle includes in a chip design is more security at the hardware level; something BlackBerry has attempted to do with the Priv. So every flagship from every smartphone brand this year will sport a Snapdragon 810 chipset. So yeah, it actually makes a lot of sense for Google and its Android team to approach someone like Qualcomm and say, “Yo, guys, we think we have some really good ideas as to how your processors could run a hell of a lot better on Android, you know, the operating system we control”. If Google is work-ing on its own processor project, then it’ll have to find a willing partner.

Shikhar Dhawan might have had a nightmarish time with the bat in the ongoing first cricket Test against South Africa, but former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday came in support of the opener, saying going by his record the left-hander deserves another chance. Shikhar has been strug-gling for runs of late and was dismissed for ducks in both the innings of the Mohali Test. For any visiting cricket team, playing Test crick-et in the sub-continent is always challenging. It becomes even more so when India object to De-cision Review System (DRS), citing less than 100 per cent accuracy. Having taken such a hard stand against DRS, it has always been expected from the Board of Con-trol for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the game is played in the fair-est of manners on home grounds. However, when Ravindra Jadeja had AB de Villiers caught at slip in the 45th over of the South African innings on Friday, with the bats-man on seven, the third umpire’s decision could have created a huge con-troversy, courtesy the callousness of the host broadcaster. I have been bowling against him for last 15 years and I was not look-ing forward to bowling against him, to be hon-est,” a cheerful Akhtar. On why he did not want to play against Tendulkar, Akhtar said, “Tendulkar is a brutal force, he is the

But what happened in the next two minutes was just shocking. The third umpire was trying to check Jadeja’s front foot – whether it was within the legitimate limits – as the official broadcaster played

The first re-play clearly showed that Jadeja bowled a No Ball, the first one of his 12-Test long career – and De Vil-liers was not walking back to the pavilion. Fr Valles had taught mathematics at St Xavier’s College for near-ly three decades. He said he felt his only achievement was the fact that he had been able to establish a unique relationship with his stu-dents at St Xaviers. During a two-hour-long chat with former colleagues, readers and current students of St Xaviers, Fr Valles said on an emotional note that his bonding with the renowned mathematician of Gujarat, P C Vaidya, was such that he cannot help but think of him whenever he thinks of his days in Ahmedabad. While Iyer hit five sixes and 14 fours in his 110-knock that lasted three hours, Sharma – re-leased from the first Test team after failing to make the eleven at Mohali – utilised the opportunity to occupy the crease for 194 minutes while strik-ing one six and 13 fours in 128 balls. Both the batsmen played strokes all round the wicket and hardly looked in trouble against UP attack that was without left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar, who took ten wickets in their previous game against Gujarat at Valsad. The polls had to be de-layed owing to the quota agitation led by Hardik, who will now remain in custody till completion of polls. During the hear-ing Friday, the bench

said it would adjourn the matter to enable police to conclude the probe and submit a report to the court. The police, it added, will not file a chargesheet or closure report in the case. Attor-ney General Mukul Ro-hatgi, appearing for Gu-jarat government, sought one-and-a-half month for state police to complete the probe. Senior advo-

cate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for Hardik, did not press for interim bail as the bench observed that investigation must be allowed to go on and that it is setting a dead-line for the police to con-clude it. The top court also refused to interfere with proceedings of Gu-jarat High Court, which is conducting an inquiry into a case in which Har-dik has been accused of stage-managing his own abduction. Indian Army successfully test-fires land attack missile ‘Brahmos’

tack version of Brahmos has been operationalised in the Army since 2007. The fire-and-forget Mis-sile has the capability to take on surface-based targets by flying a com-bined high-low trajecto-ry, thus evading enemy air defence systems. In-clusion of the powerful weapon system in Indian Army has given it a dis-tinct operational advan-

tage to knock down any enemy target even in the most difficult and hid-den terrains, the officials said. The missile, having a range of 290-km and a Mach 2.8 speed, is ca-pable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against sea and land targets. BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO of India and NPOM of Russia.
