Editorial

Dear readers,

The school’s mission is to prepare its students for the world. In the classroom, they receive knowledge and concepts with this in mind. We do not learn about the world just in theory; knowledge is much more efficiently acquired in real life and also through practical activities.

At the SIS Swiss International School, learning outside the classroom environment is a central tenet of our teaching proposal. We look to provide our students with a number of out-of-class learning experiences, whether through the study weeks or the field studies, where the students truly live enriching experiences such as: relating with the class and teachers, learning what it means to be part of a group and also, putting into practice what has been learned in the classroom. These trips strengthen the students’ independence and self-esteem, which is vital for healthy development, and also provide some unforgettable memories. The activities that involve the school community, such as sports days with the parents, are all part of this programme as well.

Throughout the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, our students develop projects and undertake community service, which stimulates them to be proactive and highlights that each person can make a difference and contribute to society in a significant and unique way.

Each child has an in-built curiosity to try to understand the world, and it is our challenge to provide them with activities that can keep this curiosity burning so that students can become “life-long learners.”

The following issue of SIS News presents a selection of activities that are part of our curriculum and of others that take place outside the classroom.

ESB Rio de Janeiro

O aluno Fabio Leocata, do 1º ano do Ensino Médio, passou para a última etapa da Olim-píada Brasileira de Alemão, que foi realizada nos dias 27, 28 e 29 de abril, no Instituto Goethe, em São Paulo, como o único representante do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Na final, em São Paulo, ficou com o 2º lugar, entre todos os estudantes de alemão do Brasil.

Amanda Martello Sampaio de Abreu escreveu a melhor monografia de sua geração na ESB Rio de Janeiro e concorreu, nessa categoria, do SIS Best Extended Essay Award, que premiou as melhores monografias de todas as escolas SIS. Ela ficou em 2º lugar! Sua monografia foi na língua e literatura portuguesa, com o título “O sabor dos sentimentos,” de que forma se pode perceber, através das protagonistas femininas dos romances “Dona Flor e seus dois maridos”, de Jorge Amado, e “Como água para chocolate,” de Laura Esquivel, a relação entre culinária e sentimento?

No 11º concurso de leitura para os alunos das escolas com ensino de alemão, ganhamos duas medalhas de ouro, nas três categorias oferecidas. As alunas contempladas foram: Marina Pezzino e Victória Dias.

Intense Competition and Buoyant Sportsmanship at the SIS Cup 2016This June for the first time, the SIS Cup was held at SIS Basel. 72 boys and girls from three countries and twelve schools came together to compete in different team and individual sports and to experience what happens when the school network of SIS becomes lived reality. After two days of intense competitions, a lot of sweat and fun, and many new bonds formed, the team of SIS Zürich took home the stately cup.

After giving their best at the SIS Cup, the Brazilian team from Rio de Janeiro received the opportunity to take part in the curriculum of SIS Basel for the rest of the week. During their stay, they encountered hospitality and wide acceptance by their Swiss peers.

Now everyone is already looking forward to the next SIS Cup when the cup holder will be challenged at SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach on 29 and 30 May 2017.

SIS Best Essay Award 2016 Shows Impressive DiversityStudents of our SIS Colleges had the chance to compete for the SIS Best Essay Award 2016. The extended essay has to be written as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

After a tight run for the best places, the SIS Best Essay Award 2016 was given to Marc-Oliver Sommer from SIS Stuttgart-Fellbach who dealt with the question “Thomas Aquinas: Does he really show five ways to God?” Marc-Oliver wins a week’s stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Amanda Martello Sampaio de Abreu from ESB Rio de Janeiro comes in at second place with her Portuguese literature essay, “O sabor dos sentimentos.” She explores the relationship of cooking and sentiments of female characters in two South American novels. She finds that in the two novels this relationship is given a very different but equally important function in shaping the interaction of the women with the male characters closest to them.

In third place is David Zollikofer of SIS Zürich with a “Mathematical Investigation of the Properties of Sums of Consecutive Natural Numbers.”

All three essays have in common that the students chose problems that were far from being mainstream issues but nonetheless questions that fascinated them. We at the SIS are proud that our students engage with so much commitment and passion in their topics and produce outstanding papers for their diplomas on an impressive level.

SIS Expands Network in Germany and in SwitzerlandSIS Swiss International School has been operating bilingual schools in Germany at five locations so far. With the takeover of International School Villa Amalienhof, SIS opened its first school location in Berlin in September. More than 200 students currently attend the school, which now carries the name “SIS Swiss International School Berlin”.

In Switzerland, too, the school year 16/17 started with a new SIS location in Pfäffikon in the canton of Schwyz.

ESB Rio de Janeiro

Paralimpíada na Casa da SuíçaNo dia 12 de setembro, os alunos do 7º ano conheceram o atleta suíço Philipp Handler, na Casa da Suíça, na Lagoa. Eles aprenderam muito sobre a prática de esportes de pessoas com deficiência visual, correram com ele e se divertiram na pista de patinação. Visitaram, também, as exposições da Cruz Vermelha e da Nestlé, ambas de origem suíça. No final, degustaram um delicioso raclette, oferecido pelo Consulado Suíço.

Semana do livroA primeira edição da semana do livro aconteceu entre os dias 12 e 16 de setembro. O objetivo foi estreitar os laços entre o universo da literatura infantil e as aulas de língua portuguesa e inglesa. Durante a semana, foram realizadas várias atividades, entre elas a visita de pais para lerem para as turmas de seus filhos.

O encerramento da semana foi o “Dia do personagem”. Todos os estudantes e funcioná-rios da escola, inspirados em um personagem de sua preferência, caracterizaram-se e levaram seus livros para compartilhar a história com todos!

Outdoor Experiences

Let’s begin with Will Nixon who reminds his readers, “Using the real world is the way learning has happened for 99,9 % of human existence. Only in the last hundred years have we put it into a little box called a classroom.” 1

Imagine the following traditional sequence of a class: The teacher teaches what “an ant” is. He shows a picture, he draws on the board, tells the facts about this animal, describes it, tells stories, writes a text for the students to copy, gives a Q&A exercise as homework, and finally applies a test.

What sort of experience have the students had? Let’s not forget that just outside the classroom those little animals are crawling by, loaded with pieces of leaves, many times bigger and heavier than them. They crawl down trees and cross large distances until they reach their colony with their heavy load. And what do they do there? This could well be an investigative question to engage learning with the real world.

To go further than just teaching the students the names of things and how they work, whether at school, on excursions or at home with their families, they must always have the opportunity to experience things as they are. Only this way will they be able to acquire real knowledge. And not only knowledge, but skills that are useful way beyond the classroom walls. As Richard P. Feynman (1918–1988), Nobel Prize winner in physics, puts it: “You can know the name of a bird in all languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird. So let’s look at the bird and see what he’s doing – that is what counts. I learned early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.”

Learning outside the classroom needs a special approach. The UK Early Years Framework Stage, which outlines best practice in early years teaching, asserts that “Outdoor learning is more effective when adults focus on what children need to be able to do rather than what children need to have. An approach that considers experiences rather than equipment places children at the center of learning and ensures that individual children's learning and developmental needs are taken account of and met effectively.” 2

A cultura é a expressão da construção humana e é constituída através do diálogo no dia a dia das pessoas, que, com o passar do tempo, constroem símbolos significativos que dão sentido a elas, e são compartilhados por elas. São esses elementos que formam a cultura de um determinado povo e região. A escola faz parte da construção dessa cultura.

A escola é um local de conhecimento, mediadora dos conhecimentos teóricos e da prá-tica, e a cultura é uma forma dela. Nas escolas, são trabalhadas muitas vivências, a fim de proporcionar ao aluno um repertório para a vida. O conhecimento é mais do que o conteúdo passado em sala de aula, ele também é composto pelas experiências fora dos portões da escola.

No Ensino Fundamental I, iniciamos com as minissemanas de estudo. Na 3F, realizamos o grill party, que se caracteriza com uma noite do pijama. Na 4F, realizamos a minissemana de estudo para Teresópolis e Friburgo, com o intuito de, entre outras coisas, investigar sobre a imigração suíça para o Brasil e conhecer o motivo pelo qual os suíços deixaram sua pátria. Na 5F, os alunos viajam para Paraty e Rio das Flores, nesta minissemana de estudo, abordamos temas ligados aos grandes ciclos econômicos brasileiros.

No Ensino Fundamental II, a proposta pedagógica permanece em total alinhamento à do primeiro ciclo. Nesse estágio, o aluno, munido de maior autonomia e independência, pes-soal e acadêmica, adquire e desenvolve habilidades específicas, que passam pelas cinco matrizes de ATLs (Approaches to Learning) do Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Na 6F, o trabalho de campo na Costa do Sol permite o conhecimento da geologia da re-gião. Na 7F, ao clima agradável da serra, a Cidade Imperial de Petrópolis possui o dom de despertar sentidos e percepções, aflorando, assim, sentimentos e emoções memoráveis. Na 8F, viajando por Minas Gerais, os alunos, através do olhar sensível das artes, tem a oportunidade de vivenciar elementos constituidores da História do Brasil Colonial, a partir do contato com igrejas, museus e objetos dos séculos XVII e XVIII, relacionando aspectos econômicos, políticos e sociais com a temática da Inconfidência. Na 9F, em Ubatuba, Picinguaba, Paraty e Ilha Grande, os alunos participam de expedições históricas, geográ-ficas e científicas, delineadas por aventuras, compartilhando a vivência a cada momento. E, em Salvador (no primeiro ano do Ensino Médio e último ano do MYP), os alunos es-tudam sobre um importante território para o desenvolvimento do período econômico do açúcar, do café, do cacau, além de ter sido a primeira capital do país.

As semanas de estudo

Ao chegar aos últimos anos de escolaridade, os alunos, já acostumados com viagens pe-dagógicas e estudos do meio, são convidados a enfrentar novos desafios e a sair da zona de conforto através das viagens CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service).

Todo ano, são sugeridas duas viagens: um acampamento; em um ano os alunos visitam a região de Ubatuba, na divisa entre os Estados do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, e acampam na praia, enquanto que, no ano seguinte, são levados à cidade de Ibitipoca, em Minas Gerais, e acampam em uma belíssima área cercada por montanhas e cachoeiras. Durante os acampamentos, as três vertentes do CAS são trabalhadas.

Para a segunda viagem, há um revezamento de destinos. Isso ocorre porque, como o curso do International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma tem duração de dois anos, cada aluno poderá desfrutar de quatro roteiros distintos ao longo de seu curso. Em um ano é esco-lhido um destino nacional e, no outro, um destino internacional. Além de explorar todos os aspectos do CAS, os alunos, também, são acompanhados pelo professor de história, que aproveita para trabalhar alguns conceitos históricos no local em que os mesmos ocorreram.

Participando das semanas de estudo e das viagens CAS, o aluno adquire a prática social, muito importante como formadora de opiniões consistentes, reflexivas e problematizado-ras. Ensinar não é apenas transmitir conhecimento, mas, é permitir ao aluno momentos de reelaboração do saber dividido, permitindo o seu acesso a esses saberes e contribuindo para a sua atuação como ser criativo no processo histórico-cultural da sociedade.

The Olympics at SIS Brasília

Rio de Janeiro became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These were the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely in the host country’s winter, the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. Here at SIS Brasília on the 12th of August, we were the first to have an SIS Olympics day.

During the lead up to this event each class was given a country to represent from all the five continents in the world. Each class then studied their chosen country and designed flags that the children would wave during the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony was attended by almost two hundred parents and family members. They witnessed a variety of exciting events such as a gymnastic display by Isabela Toscano Anhezini de Sousa from Year 3, and an exhibition of wheelchair rugby including parents and children by the Brazilian Paralympics rugby team.

During the opening ceremony the national anthems of both Brazil and Switzerland were played with the national flags of each country raised by the children. The actual Olympics event took place with the goal of encouraging healthy competition and participation of all students and their families.

Children competed with great enthusiasm in a variety of sports events like running, long jump, jump rope, football and basketball to name a few. After the event we had an awards ceremony where all children were presented with a medal to represent their participation in the games. The winning country was also announced after tallying up the points and received a special mention in our school assembly.

Finally, the children learnt that it is by participating in competition and giving our best that we all “win” new knowledge and new understandings. The following quote from the great American sports journalist Howard Cosell says it all: “The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give.”

Se estudar na Suíça

De repente, todos os pequenos símbolos de uma identidade nacional assimilados durante anos vividos em uma escola suíço-tropical, tornam-se elementos do cotidiano. Assim, do dia para noite, desavisadamente, questões de exames de Schweizerkunde transfor-mam-se em idiossincrasias regionais, que já são parte da sua vida. Logo os cantões, tão extensivamente referenciados, com suas respectivas bandeiras estampadas na entrada da escola, são o cenário real do seu dia a dia. Logo, durante seu primeiro verão, que para a sua surpresa é surpreendentemente quente e agradável, você está se banhando em um dos muitos lagos, cujas formas e nomes foram exaustivamente memorizados em alemão. Logo sair para comer um fondue moitié-moitié é algo banal, e já se acredita que quem deixa cair o pão na panela paga a conta e que quem bebe algo gelado com o prato corre o risco de criar uma bola de queijo sólida dentro do estômago (uma típica emergência helvética). Logo estão se comprando pacotes instantâneos de rösti e raclette – aquelas iguarias só vistas uma vez ao ano na festa da Suíça – para se comer em casa num do-mingo preguiçoso. Logo suas viagens de finais de semanas e feriados são para descobrir os berços da civilização ocidental, pois, agora se vive no centro do Velho Continente e tudo é um pulo. Logo se descobre que o lindo inverno que traz a neve abundante racha também os lábios e causa escorregões e tombos. Logo se entende que a pontualidade dos trens, ônibus e relógios é um reflexo da rigorosa disciplina suíça, patrimônio nacional, que às vezes, paradoxalmente, dá saudade da desordem de casa. Logo se está sozinho no mundo e o mundo agora é feito de lindos alpes desconhecidos, ao invés de praias, de curiosos costumes alheios, ao invés dos nossos, de novas definições de privacidade, ao invés do samba. Logo se é gringo e, mais do que nunca, brasileiro. Pela primeira vez se enxerga o mundo com outros olhos e, de repente, ele é tão imenso que nunca se sabe e tão pequeno que tudo se pode.
