Randstad2Randstad plays a pivotal role in the world of work. We were founded in 1960 by Frits Goldschmeding in the Netherlands.

I will be presenting a case from Randstad where I was the Market Intelligence and Analytics expert. Randstad is the number 2 player in HR in the world, and was founded in 1960, in the Netherlands.

Some numbers on Randstad We employ 580 thousand people every day, resulting in a lot of revenue, and this is done by our staff in more than 4000 locations.

Large research study re-inventedFrom one-offs to structural deployment

Research monitor of 2,500 people, four times a yearSince 2010 Labour market topics and more

4

Randstad runs a very large labour market survey. It runs every quarter, since 2010. Resulting in more than 50.000 respondents to date.

Some of the labour topics are

What is your profession?5Currently looking for a job?Motivations for a new job?Where do you look for a new job?Desired travel time? But also:Area, type of contract, Specific recruitment intel!

Some questions and facts from the research study..

With this info we analyse different target groups for our recruitment consultants and our clients.

This is what happened6Goal: Delivering insights to recruitment, sales and eventually our clients

Weeks instead of hoursWhat do financials seek in work? How can we find 50 constructors?Losing strategic analytics focusStuck between sales and IT

OK perfect but Why am I here then This is what happened

Time to market too long the response from MI to consultants and clients took to long Our target groups were not understood knowledge stayed within MI Tailor made solutions for standard tasks, - demand increased which lead to a growing workload and dissatisfied consultants.. Stuck between sales and IT - Focus on short-term solutions and not long-term development hard to get this on the agenda Unusual long-term project most people are not interested in

Sort of upside down of benefits Alteryx talks about hours instead of days [Picture] This felt Kind of embarrassing like trying to fix a car while driving..

Process in place7

Looking at the process, we saw we were too dependent of the two partners in this project. A research panel partner runs the questionnaires. Another partner processes the data and Randstad MI can access it through a web portal. It used predefined filters and was not very flexible.

In the end it was only possible for MI to use it and not by others.

We came up with a new process which made it possible to self-service the organisation.

8No data ownershipNo history of changes to questionnairesLots of complex (multiple response) questions unusual data and calculationsMetadata hardly availableFocus on last survey results, not analysis of all dataNo descriptive labels in SPSS-filesLarge dataset containing multiple yearsMultiple data quality issues incl. need for recoding and formatting

Complications

Looking at the data.. All sort of complications because of a history of several years concerning the survey and its development.

It was never intended first place as a data source many research studies dont. It is a mistake I believe. Also, complications because IT (regular engineers) are not familiar with survey data and preparing it. especially Multiple Response questions.

9

Can we turn it around? Maybe start a revolution?

OK so we needed a small revolution to fix this

9

How Data processing 1. Define and combine data2. Output0. Data sources

3. Share

Can we focus on long-term and short-term results at the same time? Yes, we did. My goal was to self-service more and more colleagues with facts and figures on the labour market.

We created an agile process with short sprints and deliverables. I started using Alteryx for prepping the data, because nobody (IT) could help me with it And it was the fastest way to get my data in Tableau dashboards.!

But we had a complication with Alteryx and the survey data.

A bit of magic11On a Friday morning, Alteryx wroteHave a look at this example and see if it does the trick for you.

It was the beginning of what we now know as the SPSS Input Tool!

Complications with Alteryx and Tableau:

Initially, opening SPSS files in AlteryxAnd processing of complex questions in Alteryx.

I contacted Alteryx and in november 2014, Scott wrote me back. !!

And after some hours of work 12

New process14

We created a new experience around the end user! Its all about taking control back into our own hands to maximise flexibility and response to our consultants. Less dependent on external partners to create more speed.

Best of both worlds: Less customized work of MI neededFaster time to marketConnections made possible that never were numbers and motivations combined on the level of demograpics or professions..

Annual cost savings250 consultants having to make their own recruitment reports, 15 per year, costing 10 hours of work each we can easily take that out of their hands

21

An example of just one of the benefits too many consultants spending time on wrong things.. I did a quick calc on the savings we could reach with a self-service BI approach for this project 21 FTEs!

And other benefits like all reports look the same and level of knowledge is on par throughout the whole organisation. 15

Solved16MI capacityMI advisor roleTime to sales and marketKnowledgeable partner Introduced new agile experimental Analytics process (Alteryx/Tableau) before securing it by ITMoving from analysis to fast dashboarding self-service BI

A lot of the complications are now solved..
