Reactions 1065 - 20 Aug 2005 Loperamide Paralytic ileus in an infant: case report An 18-month-old girl received oral loperamide [Imodium] 8mg in four doses administered over < 24 hours for diarrhoea; her mother had administered the drug, which is contraindicated in infants < 2 years of age, without seeking medical advice. She subsequently developed paralytic ileus, with abdominal pain, anorexia, cold extremities and pallor. Loperamide was discontinued and her symptoms improved.
