    ABOUT THIS FAMILY

HOW FAMILIES LIKE THIS EARN THEIR HOUSE

ROAD REPAIR - Repairing roads is incredibly important in an area with constant mudslides, landslides, anddownpours. More than a thousand people use this road daily and the hazardous conditions make it very

dangerous for pedestrians. This also makes it possible for emergency services to access communities thatwere previously cut off from life-saving police, fire, and medical services.

SERVING NEIGHBORS - Neighbors coming together to serve each other is one of the most powerful ways totruly break the chains of poverty. When members of a community begin to serve each other, there is almost noend to what they can accomplish together.

SCHOOL REPAIR - Imagine sending your child to school wondering if shell fall into a latrine today. This is thereality of so many in this area because of the moisture on the ground, holes dug for latrines cave in regularly. Many families serve at a local school digging deeper and safer holes for new latrines.

Wilmer and his family live in a bamboo, plastic, and cardboardlean-to situated on the side of Wilmers fathers house. Wilmerworks as a mason assistant but when construction jobs areunavailable he and his wife rely on the meager amount of cornand beans they grow to feed their family.

According to Wilmer, the lack of job opportunities have notallowed him to provide a better life for his wife and children.

During the rainy season, it is difficult to go to sleep, especiallyduring heavy storms when rain saturates the walls and the wind threatens to flatten their home. The worstaspect of the rainy season, however, is when the children get sick due to the constant humidity. The moneyspent on medicine creates even more hardship.

Wilmer and his family are excited to begin the process of earning a house because he sees this as the onlyopportunity for his family to have a new beginning.
