Cambridge Deaf ClubCambridge Deaf club is still going well. I had to cancel the deaf club on December18th due to heavy snow. We were planning to have small Christmas party but have

moved it to January 15th. We shall go out for New year meal first then to deaf club.Limited Seating only.Hope you all had a good Christmas and enjoyed the snow and food. The next deaf club meetings are on January 15th, February 19th& March 19th.HELEN PERRY

Deaf & Hearing Clubs (Huntingdon and Cambridge)The last three months for both Huntingdon and Cambridge Deaf & Hearing clubsmeeting had been very well attended. We had different people organising the gamesand involved doing tea/coffee etc. Many thanks to these people and it is good to know

that these two clubs are still popular. For the coming new year, Huntingdon Deaf & Hearing club will continue as normal butfor Cambridge Deaf & Hearing club, this will stop until after Easter when we willmonitor the numbers attending. The reason for this is that a new CDA Social clubhas been set up for January and March which means this will clash with CambridgeDeaf & Hearing club twice so I thought it would be wise to wait until after Easter as Icouldnt find any other evening available at CDA premises.JAMIE BILLAM

Supporting Deaf People ProjectThe Project has again been busy during the autumnand winter months providing our service to D/deafpeople across the county. Just a reminder that wework with D/deaf, hard of hearing, deafened,

deaf/blind people living in Cambridgeshire and weaim to ensure that people are enabled to live asindependently as possible. We can help with things like dealing with day to dayissues, budgeting, help with correspondence, developing social skills etc. Oneof the workers is usually available at the drop in sessions across the County. Please contact us if you would like to make a referral.

John Smith, Deaf comedian, came to the CDA in December and it was anevening to certainly remember and really made me think about the issues ofD/deaf and hearing culture and putting it across in humour made a strong

impact! The Digital switchover is almost here and just to remind you that if you are inreceipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Attendance Allowance (AA) ConstantAttendance Allowance or are blind or partially sighted you are eligible for theHelp Scheme, which helps people with the switchover and includes:

    easy-to-use digital equipment; home delivery and installation if you wish; an aerial check and replacement if needed, where we can; a helpline and retuning advice;

a 12 month digital TV aftercare service.

There is a charge of 40 for this UNLESS you are also in receipt of PensionCredit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA(IR)), IncomeSupport or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance. Then there is no charge - it isfree. You will get a letter about the switchover if you are getting benefits.

Fans of David Beckham (there must be more than just me!) will be interestedto know that David his wife, Victoria and their children are learning British SignLanguage to help them communicate with a deaf friend.

We met several Romford Deaf people at Romford Deaf club.We played good bingo, raffles with very good prizes. We had sandwiches, cakes

and tea. At 4pm, we left Romford and we arrived at March about 5.30pm. Wereally had a good time at Romford Deaf club.On Dec 7th, about twelve Deaf people arrived at Fenland Deaf Drop-in forspecial dinner party. The dinner menu were Tomato soup, Chicken withsmash/roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, peas, sausage/bacon roll etc, thenChristmas pudding, gateaux cake, and fruit salad. Christine Tarrant workedhard in organising and she cooked the food very well. Also big thanks to othervolunteers who helped. After dinner, there were 30 good raffle prizes and allDeaf people were given a Christmas present. Wow! They really enjoyed theparty very much.

    On Dec 9th

, there was a buffet lunch and over twenty deaf people turned up. Itcould have been more as some had flu, one persons car broke down and thevery cold weather. Christine Tarrant made all the sandwiches etc for buffetlunch. Well done to her and big thank you to Christine. We really had a goodparty. It was the coldest December since 1890!!MICHAEL PAPE

prizes but I suppose he deserved it simply because he spent morethan anyone else on raffle tickets! Linda managed to raise 60 whichwas very good. We do appreciate her efforts and also those who helped to dothe washing up and tidied the room afterwards. Every little bit of help makes alot of difference. A million thanksJAMIE BILLAM

Cambridge Deaf Youth GroupHi Everybody!Theres so much to report, weve been busydoing lots of fun activities since the summer!

In September we went Go Ape in ThetfordForest and lots of teens and the supervisingadults conquered their fear of heights to jumpfrom a platform and swing into a net likeTarzan It didnt pour with rain like it had theprevious day so we were very lucky! We still gota bit dirty from the bark at the bottom of the zip wires and there was a slightcompetition going between us all to see who could land without falling over andmaking bark fly everywhere!

In October we joined up with the Peterborough Deaf Youth Group to go Ice

Skating and this doubled the usual numbers of teenagers attending so this wasgreat. Lots of teens made new friends and got a few bruises from falling overon the ice! There were lots of complaints that the time they had to skate on theice was too short, so well probably do this again in the New Year. :o)

On November 20thwe had a party at the Cambridge Deaf Centre, with pizza, chips and games. The Peterborough Deaf Youth Group joined us again for thisand a lot of our time was spent chatting to each other whilst ducking flyingtable tennis balls! We played lots of old traditional games such as musicalchairs (switching the lights on and off instead of using music) and also played

    Splat which was great fun!

Next month were going to Peterborough again to go bowling and eat a 4 courseChristmas dinner at PizzaExpress!

In January well be going to aTheme Park and in February toMepal Outdoor Centre. If youknow any deaf teenagers aged11+ or their siblings that would

like to join us, just e-mail me [email protected] text meon 07736279239! I also have aprofile on Facebook and most ofthe teens keep in touch with mein this way My profile picture isof my cochlear implant, underthe name Sarah Clark.SARAH CLARK

training e set up very soon, in January 2011. Please see the article elsewhere inthe newsletter and I very much hope this will be successful.I would like to say we are working hard to maintain our services to Deaf peopleand we will continue to do so in 2011 as our service is unique for the local DeafCommunity. We are one of very few Deaf Associations in the country who canprovide a unique service and it is absolutely critical that this service continues. At the time of writing, there are few places still available for BSL Level One andI think Level Two course is 95% full, both courses start in 2nd week January2011.We would like to thank David Fairey for making the stage for Hope Hall in time

for the JohnSmith comedyevening. This jobwas very welldone. We havebeen told that wecan keep it and Iknow that it is

Heart attack!Let's say it's 6.15 pm and you're going home (alone of course) after an unusually hardday at work. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing

severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw.You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately youdon't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but theguy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself!

How to survive a heart attack when alone:Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the personwhose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselvesby coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken beforeeach cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum

from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every twoseconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beatingnormally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movementssqueeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heartalso helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to ahospital.

Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!A cardiologist says that if everyone who passes this information on to 10 people, youcan bet that we'll save at least one life.

HAPPY NEW YEAR BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL!We hope you have managed to stay warm and dry during the weeks ofsub-zero temperatures. Spring is coming!!

Bishop David sends to you all his Blessing and this message:I had the privilege recently, during the vacancy in see, of attending theopening of the new General Synod by Her Majesty the Queen. At the ceremonyin Church House, Westminster, the representatives and signers of the DeafChurch were right in the centre of the circle, just a few yards from Her Majesty. It was a powerful reminder of our need to take active and visible steps to

include the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing in our church life, as indeedothers whom we easily leave at the margins, lest our circle be found an emptyone. So as I write this, on Christmas Eve, I give thanks that God has in Christ comeinto the very heart of that circle too sharing our weakness, but transforming itinto a new kind of strength. I would like, then, to send my very warmest goodwishes for the New Year to all our friends in the Deaf Church and wider deafcommunities, and ask in return for your prayers for us as a diocese as wewelcome our new Bishop, and also as we continue to work actively to discernthe best way to show our support for ministry among you and among thosewith disabilities of many kinds.
