    March Deaf Club

On Friday 1stFebruary, the usual members turned up to listen to a talk given by agardener but unfortunately, it was cancelled for the second time. Instead GodfreyPalmer talked about learning gardening at Gorleston Deaf School which was veryinteresting. He said he was given a plot of land at the school, Billy Rodwell and Rod

Hopkins were also given plots, they learned how to work on an allotment, what togrow and so on. Godfrey said they were very proud to grow lots of vegetables but asit was summer holiday, it was all gone, probably the Headmaster took them!!Questions were asked about gardening by everyone at the club meeting such as howto prune roses, how to get rid of ants, moles etc.

Later, we had an interesting conversation about the flooding on the coast fromLincolnshire to Essex because it was the anniversary of the terrible floods. Ithappened 60 years ago, we were asked if we had stories about it. One member fromKings Lynn talked about the floods there, another member recalled her relatives were

affected in Mablethorpe. We also discussed the latest news about the discovery of theburial and whether it was King Richard III. (On Monday 4thFebruary, it was confirmedon the main news that it was indeed the bones of Richard III found underneath a carpark in Leicester).

Tea/coffee and biscuits wereprovided by Catherine Palmer, thanks to Catherine.

    It was an enjoyable evening

despite the speaker could notcome. The discussions by themembers were interesting andintelligent too.

    ELAINE HEATH

Quite a lot of people came to ourclub even though the weather was not so good. However, inside the hall it was warmon Friday 4thJanuary 2013 and we had a whist drive. The winners were Ron Baileyand Elaine Heath. Those not playing had a chat.

Editors articleIt had been a long cold winter and it is only a matter of time before we have somewarmer sunnier weather. I am looking forward to Spring and then Summer. I am sureyou will have plans for the coming Summer. As you can see in front page of the newsletter, we have two new members of staffwho started at CDA recently - Catherine Martindale (Admin Officer) and Liz Hilton

(Finance Officer). We wish them all the best in their new posts and I am sure they willdo well. Also there had been some changes on the Trustee Board which I am sureJanie will mention in her report. We are very pleased to see a very good number of Deaf people attending theAfternoon Coffee get together at Care Home in Wisbech, (home of one elderly deaflady) so far we had two sessions and twice twelve people attendedI thought the Dementia Presentation at CDA went very well and it was very wellattended. I would like to say a big thank you to Sally Skeldon and Christine Tarrantfor organising and doing their part. You can see Sallys report somewhere in thenewsletter. We hope this will be the first of many more presentations to come.

The BSL Walks are back with two new dates. Please do make an effort to come andjoin us. It is fun, healthy and a good way to keep fit!JAMIE BILLAM

Deafness & DementiaEmma Fergusson- Coleman, a researcher from The Deaf Dementia project based atManchester University, delivered a fascinating presentation on the 26th February, concentrating on Deaf people who have Dementia. The research project focuses onthe Deaf Community, who predominantly use British sign Language as their preferredmethod of communication access the right support, diagnosis and information relating

to this illness. This project identifies the lack of BSL awareness that is demonstratedin society that creates barriers and prevents the Deaf community accessing supportand information. This presentation provided a group of people the knowledge torecognise not only the signs and symptoms, but also how to support individuals in thecommunity who may show either early or latter signs of this progressive illness andalso to sign post to access appropriate support. On behalf of Cambridgeshire Deaf Association, I would like to thank Emma for thisinsightful presentation. This was a successful event and hopefully the beginning ofmore to come. Please check the website for future information events.SALLY SKELDON

Cambridge Hard of Hearing ClubTHE CAMBRIDGE HARD OF HEARING CLUB HELD THEIR MONTHLY MEETING ATTHE MEADOWS CENTRE STARTING AT 2.30 PM ON THURSDAY THE 28TH OFFEBRUARY 2013

Chairman Brian Downham welcomed those present and after some club noticesand a short delay introduced Lee Searle from CBM. Originally known as ChristianBlind Mission, Lee explained that CBM is the largest worldwide disability charityassisting 36 million of those experiencing disability last year. The CBM are theonly disability charity that works with the UN. Over the last 18 months CBM havehelped over 2 million children with deafness impairment. The CBM was started 120 years ago by German Minister Pasteur Christofel whenhe saw in Turkey people giving to beggars who could see but not to blindbeggars.

Lee informed us that there are over 275 million children in the world experiencingdeafness 80% in Africa because there is little treatment there. CBM run their owntreatment centres and Lee enlarged on the work of one in Kenya. The untreatableare taught along with family members to sign and given solar powered hearingaids, running costs 60p each pa. Letters of thanks from the children explainingtheir, circumstances were passed round the meeting. Examples of howprofoundly deaf children have excelled in African life once treated were given. On average CBM perform 14800 ear surgeries each month to prevent deafnessand with partner National Institute for the Deaf teach 89,000 children to sign.Only one person in the meeting had heard of CBM. CBM only opened in the UK 15years ago and went to churches at first and churches flooded them with money.CBM do not pay for advertising or for celebrities to advertise their work. After answering a number of questions, the chairman invited the meeting tothank Lee in the usual manner for his talk, which he gave at very short notice. There was a hearty response. The meeting then closed after being reminded ofthe next meeting on 28th of March when Peter Carter will deliver a talk onPoaching. For club contact phone Val on 01223 233273 or text Chris on 07876108963 oremail: [email protected] http://groupspaces.com/CambsHOHClubCHRIS TURNER (

Peterborough Coffee MorningHello everyone! The move to Ricos was the best thing we did!!The room at Asda was not ideal. The

atmosphere in Ricos is fantastic and the ownerhas allowed us to use an area of the caf wherewe will not be in the way of customers. About25-30 people attend the Coffee Morning. If weget more people we will take over the caf! Theowner is very pleased as it is bringing extrabusiness for them. Everyone buys their owndrink much better than Debbies Tea andCoffee!! We have had some laughs at theCoffee Morning. For the last two sessions I

arranged a quiz, the first one was a General Knowledge quiz, the second one wasa Flag Quiz. Everyone enjoyed the quizzes and I think they are expecting oneevery time now! I asked for help for topics so at the next Coffee Morning we aredoing Famous Faces quiz. We had a lot of quiz ideas - thank you :-) One and ahalf hours is not long enough for Deaf Coffee Morning a few people stayafterwards. If they anyone wants to stay after the Coffee Morning has finished please buy adrink and/or something to eat. I dont want to upset the owner thank you.

It was good to meet the new Chaplain for the Deaf Andrew Taylor-Cook . If you

havent met him yet I am sure you meet him in the Deaf Community soon. The Coffee Morning will be open on the 1st April even though it is a Bank Holiday(Easter).Looking forward to the next Deaf Coffee Morning, see you there.DEBBIE POWELL (Co-ordinator)

    Personal Independence Payment (DLA)

From 8 April 2013 the Government is introducing a new benefit called PersonalIndependence Payment (PIP) to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) foreligible working age people aged 16 to 64.

The Government is committed to supporting disabled people to lead independent

and active lives. It recognises that disabled people can face additional challengesto leading independent lives and is committed to maintaining an extra-cost, non-means-tested disability benefit to support disabled people.

The short address for this page is: www.dwp.gov.uk/pip

PIP Toolkit for support organisations and advisers

Claimants seek information about benefits and services from a range of sourcesother than DWP. This toolkit for support organisations and advisers providesgeneral awareness, fact sheets about PIP, copies of PIP letters and suggestedtext to use in your own communication. It also includes some practical steps you

could consider as part of your preparations for PIP.

Personal Independence Payment (DLA) (Cont)What the change means

Disability Living Allowance will end for everyone of working age even if they havean indefinite period award. By working age we mean everyone who is aged 16 to64 on the day Personal Independence Payment is introduced.

There are no current plans to replace Disability Living Allowance for childrenunder 16 and people aged 65 and over who are already receiving Disability LivingAllowance.

Personal Independence Payment is based on an assessment of individual need. The new assessment will focus on an individuals ability to carry out a range ofkey activities necessary to everyday life. Information will be gathered from theindividual, as well as healthcare and other professionals who work with andsupport them. Most people will also be asked to a face to face consultation with atrained independent assessor as part of the claim process.

    When will PIP be introduced

    New claims

April 2013 Personal Independence Payment will be introduced for newclaims in Merseyside, North West England, Cumbria, Cheshire and NorthEast England. During this period new claimants in all other parts of thecountry will continue to claim Disability Living Allowance as now.

June 2013 new claims for Personal Independence Payment will be takenfrom all parts of the country.

    Existing DLA claimants

Existing Disability Living Allowance claimants who are aged 16 to 64 on 8 April2013 or reach age 16 after that date will be affected by the introduction ofPersonal Independence Payment, even if they have an indefinite or lifetimeaward of DLA.

We will write to all existing DLA claimants in February and March 2013 with moreinformation about PIP in their usual annual letters that tell them what their newbenefit rate will be.

Personal Independence Payment is being introduced in stages over a number of

    years.

October 2013 if an individual reports a change in how a health conditionor disability affects them, they reach the end of an existing award of DLA(and havent already received a DLA renewal letter), or they areapproaching the age of 16, then we will invite them to claim PersonalIndependence Payment.

From 2015 we will start to contact everyone else receiving DLA (unlessthey report a change in how their health condition or disability affectsthem, or if their award is due to end). We will write to individuals in plentyof time and they do not need to contact DWP now.

There is no automatic transfer from Disability Living Allowance to PersonalIndependence Payments

    BSL - 10th year recognitionanniversary (18thMarch)

In this anniversity year, the BDA isworking to get politicians to focus againon BSL.

This March sees ten years since the government first recognised British SignLanguage as a UK minority language. Now the British Deaf Association (BDA) isworking to get BSL back onto politicians' radar screens.

David Buxton, Chief Executive of the BDA, said,

"Ten years on from recognition, we need the government to re-engage with the

many thousands of people who use British Sign Language, whether as their firstlanguage or alongside English. There are still too many barriers that prevent Deafpeople from participating in, and contributing equally to, society."

"We must keep campaigning for a BSL Act to improve Deaf people's lives in thelong term. In the short term, we must also campaign to get some specificimprovements to Deaf people's lives. There are lots of changes that localauthorities and health services could make - we will need a campaign on theground as well as at Westminster."

"In this anniversary year, we want to work with the Deaf people across thecountry who are crying out for change. We want to give them the training andthe campaigning tools to win improvements to services where they live."
