The Old
Church Bell
The old church bell, what memories - I love to tell.
You, too,
may recall.. .
an
old church bell:
Pictures
of old
begin
stirring in your soul.
What lovely thoughts: (remember?) an old church bell.
Your
old church bell may
have
been bright
and

Beautifully
cast
in bronze as well;
Strong and
bold, elegant
and
old;
Apriceless object(thosememories),

My old
church
bell is different, but, oh well
It 's an
old
tire rim we wer e
unable
to
sell.
Valueless
(not
new) that may be true.
But
it 's still my wonderful, noble old church bell.
Your
bell
and
mine resemble

than we
might

for miles and miles across the dell.

DEAR CHRISTIAN FRIENDS,
To say that this
letter
is difficult to
write
is a vast understatement. We ar e leaving Zambia soon
decisionto leave isnot one

been

haste, nor has itbeenmadewillingly; the door seems to be cl
Deep within th e ministry (the governing body) which controls non-profit organizationsthere is a perv
desire
for
all groups
and
organizations
to
have
a
headquarters
(or
governing
body)
which
would include
to p a single dictatorial position of authority. To state it simply, we (as we understand local congregation
Biblical sense) do not fit into their mold. Congregational autonomy is
being
severely
threatened
(basic
political move) without regard to democratic principles, not to mention religious freedom. The i rony in all
is that
th e
country of Zambia
has
been
declared
a Christian nation.
Consequently,

We

th e
fact that
th e
huge majority of our congregations remain committed to
th e
independent, autonomous
n
of th e local church, and we see
that
our
Zambian
Christians genuinely appreciate all of the missionary wor
assistance
that
has
been rendered to
them
down through the years.
We, all of us,
must
begin
now an
extended season of prayer for our
Zambian
brothers
and
sisters inc
the congregations. We pray
that
they will remain steadfast in their resolve to be Christians first and only
pray for
strength
as they
resist the
powers of
darkness.
We now come to our situation. Our
plan
as you know had been to continue o\ir labors for th e Kingdom
in Zambia for another five years or so. As we
return
to th e
States
(soon) we
are
faced with
some
question
demand decisions. Do we locate to another foreign mission field? Do we search for a local ministry of serv
home? Do we go into the market place? Please pray with us concerning these things. Traditionally, as
term
missionaries
return
home from th e field to decide
their
future, they have been granted a period of su
of
up
to a year while
they travel
to their supporting congregations and
speak
with supporting individuals
a
time
ofreflecting on goals achieved
and
goals
not attained.
It
is also a
time
of deciding
where
to go anchor
to do. We respectfully request and pray
that
you will continueyour fmancial support as you uplift us in p
THE FUTURE FOR NEW
BUILDINGS
The congregations
at
Sanse, Chitahtasokwe
and
Malende still wish to construct their own
permanent
of worship. We have redesigned (scaled down) our basic buildingplan in such a way
that
may allow our p
to proceed (without th e presence of the missionary).
The
people will bum bricks for th e building (inst
making cement blocks). I
have
been able to
transport
(to a central location) iron roofing
sheets,
pockets ofce
steel door frames (with burglar bar) and steel trusses which will be enough for three new biiUdings.
Ther
be fewer seats, less windows and no permanent floor.

to serve as evangelists. These men
travel occasionally
to
their
sister
congregations
for preaching (and advice when asked). Bi
cycles
have
been provided for
these
four
men
to
assist
them in their
travels. We are extremely pleased
with
how well this
program
is
working.
TRAINING
SCHOOL
The men s
Bible training school has been operating
very
successfully
the
past
few months. Approximately twenty men (a
few from
each
of ten congregations)
gathered at
th e
Kabile building
for a full week of classroom i ns tmct ion. Eve ry other week was
spent in
their
home
village.
We
pray
that the
leaders
might
be
able
to continue with
this
training program (which is
scheduled
for
August and September).

Saying
goodbye is
never
easy. Yet
that
is
what
life is all
about
. . . changes.
We can look back over th e last fifteen years and
see the
Lord s
Hand
at
workbringing changes: in
th e
lives
of
Zambianswho
have lef t
darkness
for light as they have accepted Jesus Christ as
Lord
and
Saviour;
in
th e
churches as they have dug deep into
the
Word; in
th e
livesofchildrenbeing
taught
by Christian teachers
and
parents;
in
th e
lives of non-believers
as
Christians witness
to
them.
Even
though we
are
leaving God isstillatwork
in
His
church and in
His people here. There is an appointed time for everything. And
there is a
time
for every event under heaven. . . (Ecc. 3:1). Zambia
ChristianMission has been
working
for th e Lord here in Zambia for
around
thirty-five years. People
have
been reached
and taugh^
chxurches and
schools
have
been built.
There are many mature
Christians
who are able to
carry
on
with
the Lord s
ministry
of
reconciliation. The
time
to leave is right. Our lives have been
enriched and changed by the privilege of serving here. As we look
towards home we are excited about the
opportunities
that we
know
ar e
awaiting
us . Pray for
us
as we say goodbye to
brothers
and
