Voorwoord
MSc-opleiding Applied Earth Sciences loopt hier-
bij voorop. Deze opleiding biedt samen met een
aantal Europese universiteiten de ‘European Mineral
Engineering Course’ en de ‘European Mining Course’
aan als varianten van de Delftse opleiding. Deze
vorm van internationalisering wordt verder ontwik-
keld op het gebied van Applied Geophysics. Per 1
september 2006 bieden wij met de andere univer-
siteiten van de IDEA League (Imperial College
London, TU Delft, ETH Zurich, RHS Aken) een geza-
menlijke MSc-opleiding Applied Geophysics aan.
Voorwoord 7
Niet alleen tussen landen, ook tussen disciplines
overschrijden wij grenzen.

In vele gevallen
ruimd. In de bundel zijn alle aangeleverde samen-
vattingen opgenomen, ongeacht de honorering van
het bij het afstudeerproject behorende verslag.

Porous Asphalt Concrete or PAC is applied in high
quantities on the Dutch motorways as a wearing
course since 1987. The main problem of PAC is its
lifespan. The distribution of the lifespan of PAC
surfaces can vary from 4 to 16 years. Its ravelling
resistance mainly determines the durability of a PAC
wearing course. Ravelling or loss of aggregate from
the wearing course is a form of fatigue that occurs
in surface layer of the pavement structure. Due to
the open structure of PAC oxygen, water and salt
can easily penetrate into the asphalt layer. This
can lead to deterioration of the properties of the
bitumen and break up the bond between bitumen
and the aggregate structure. This results in loss of
surfacing material. Improvement has to be found in
improving size, shape and properties of the contact
bridges between the aggregate particles.
C-Fix is a special binder with low temperature
susceptibility, very good ageing behavior and
environmental benefits. At the same temperature
and load condition the material appears to have a
much higher strength and a higher elastic modulus
than normal pen grade binders. The name of C-
Fix is an abbreviation for Carbon Fixation. C-Fix
is in essence a very carbon-rich residual fuel.
Considering the cycle factors such as the burning
of fuels in transportation, heating, mixing etc, the
net CO2 saving is reduced to around 150 kg / ton
of asphalt mix. C-Fix contains more asphaltenes
than a 100 pen bitumen and it behaves as a gel
type bitumen. C-Fix contains long chains of carbon.
This makes the material a hard binder with higher
viscosity and reduced temperature susceptibility
compared with 70/100 pen grade bitumen. Asphalt
mixtures containing C-Fix are less susceptible to
viscous deformation.
The main objective is to determine whether C-Fix is
a good binder in PAC mixtures and can be used as a
replacement for 70/100 pen grade bitumen, with a
few comparative tests.
Possible use of C-Fix in Porous Asphalt
More C-Fix binder can be applied in the mix, with
less drainage, according to test results. Adding more
binder into the mix can increase the film thickness
in the upper part of a porous asphalt layer. The
strength properties for C-Fix are better than
those of the normal pen grade binder; it has been
shown that the C-Fix mix performs well and even
better than normal mixtures at normal and high
temperatures. But at lower temperature the C-Fix
shows a brittle behavior.
Whereas the pure C-Fix binder shows a brittle
behavior it becomes more ductile by adding filler
into it. Relaxation tests at low temperature shows
that C-Fix mixtures have significant more residual
stress than a normal pen grade bitumen mix.
The C-Fix can be a replacement, but more research
into the low temperature behavior must be
conducted; even some modification of the mix is
recommended.

Spoorvernieuwing in de London Underground
In 1863 werd de eerste ondergrondse treinverbin-
ding gerealiseerd in Londen, waarmee ‘s werelds
vernieuwing. De omstandigheden waaronder de
spoorvernieuwing plaatsvindt, zijn zeer complex.
Vooral de spoorvernieuwingen in de diepe geboorde
tunnels, de zogenaamde “Tubes”, zijn zeer kostbaar
en tijdrovend. Zeer beperkte ruimte, korte beschik-

Damping of vibrations in slender tubes of arch bridges
Since the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in 1940,
wind engineering researchers have made great
efforts towards understanding the aeroelastic
phenomena associated with longspan bridges:
vortex shedding, galloping, divergence, flutter, and
buffeting response. Wind-tunnel tests have been
widely used for that purpose and considerable
understanding has been obtained using this tool.
In addition, with progress in computer technology,
analytical prediction methods in combination
with wind-tunnel testing are now more commonly
used. The analytical methods yield a great deal
of information about the aeroelastic phenomena
and have made it possible to design much longer
bridges.
Also in shortspan bridges like arch bridges
aeroelastic phenomena may occur. On October 22,
2002, during heavy autumn winds and only two
months after the final floating-in of the bridge,
vibrations were recorded in the diagonals of the
Werkspoor bridge in Utrecht. In the field, vibrations
of the first mode were visually recorded. They
had an amplitude of 25 to 50 mm at wind speeds
between 5 and 10 m/s.
This master thesis is about control of vibrations
(mainly vortex-induced) of tubes in shortspan
bridges. In Chapter 1 an overview is given of
vibration phenomena in bridges. Chapter 2 focuses
on the internal dynamic characteristics of structures.
In the past several methods have been developed to
suppress vibrations in bridge decks and cables. In
Chapter 3 some of these methods are reviewed.
For the engineering of bridges in The Netherlands
the NEN and the Eurocode are applicable. In
Chapter 4 a tubular diagonal is examed using these
codes and some suggestions are made.
In Chapter 5 two analytical models are formulated.
These models can be used to verify the numerical
models which are used in Chapter 6.
The numerical method which is used in Chapter 6 is
the method of finite differences. Using this method
several damping techniques for tubular diagonals
are examined.
In the last chapter the conclusions are summerized
and some suggestions are made for further
research.

Lifespan enlargement of deck plates of movable steel bridges
A considerable number of orthotropic steel bridge
decks suffer from fatigue cracks in their relatively
slender deck plate. In case of fixed bridges, the
Dutch Ministry of Transport designed an effective
bridge deck repair method, by replacing the asphalt
surface layer by a 60 mm heavily reinforced high
strength concrete layer. This bridge deck repair is
already executed at a few Dutch bridges, including
the Caland and Moerdijk Bridge.
In case of movable bridges, such a repair method
is not an option because of weight restrictions.
These limit the repair height to 30 mm, only to be
applied on the heavy traffic lanes. The very small
height of the concrete layer results in the need for
a rather effective reinforcement. This implies that
the reinforcement has to be very dense and stiff,
and the internal lever arm between steel deck plate
and reinforcement has to be as large as possible.
This can be realised by reducing the concrete
cover depth and the bar spacing. The use of ultra
high performance concrete and non-corroding
reinforcement materials is a promising option.
However, such a design cannot be based on regular
standards. Therefore, tests have to be performed in
order to research the design possibilities and verify
the assumptions made.
Repair heights of 25 and 30 mm are investigated.
The reinforcement alternatives which are considered
for the design are:
• Smooth stainless steel bars
• Ribbed stainless steel bars
• Carbon fi bre reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars,
sprinkled in with sand
• CFRP laminates, glued on top of the concrete layer
Two types of experiments are performed. Pull-out
tests are performed to study the bond behaviour
between concrete and reinforcement and to obtain
information about the minimum concrete cover
required to prevent splitting of the concrete.
Furthermore, bending tests are performed to obtain
more knowledge on the actual bending behaviour
(stiffness, cracking behaviour) of steel plates
covered with various repair alternatives.
The most promising alternatives are CFRP bar
and ribbed stainless steel reinforcement. The
recommended rebar diameter is 6 mm. Furthermore
a concrete cover depth of 6 mm and a rebar spacing
of 12 mm are recommended. In Table 1 the most
important characteristics are listed for steel deck
plates covered with 25 and 30 mm concrete overlays
reinforced with ribbed stainless steel (RS) and CFRP
bars.

onderzoek.
Het voortraject naar het uiteindelijke ontwerp
is tweeledig.

Connections Pile with Upper Structure for Concrete JettyNumerical analysis and design proposal
Delta Marine Consultants has made wide use of
steel pipe piles connected to concrete pile caps as
substructures of jetties (See Figure 1). However,
there are no well-developed and validated design
procedures that account for the large bending
moment on the connection, which is generated
by lateral loads (wind, wave, or earthquake).
During the service period, the moment should be
transferred to steel pile by the interface between
concrete core and steel pile.
Since the load transfer mechanism in the interface is
not clear, it is obligatory to design the connections
based on the conservative assumption that the
moment is totally resisted by the interface shear
force. The contribution of interface normal force is
excluded in the moment resistance, due to the lack
of knowledge. The current design concept requires
welding shear keys inside the steel pile, to ensure
the large shear stress can be transferred in the
interface Welding on site costs cumbersome labor
work and still the quality can not be guaranteed.
Therefore great need rises to understand the load
transfer mechanism.
In this thesis, the load
transfer mechanism
is studied analytically
and validated with
numerical simulation.
The contributions of
interface normal and
shear force to the
moment resistance are compared, and the result
shows that the interface normal force can resist
up to 70% of the moment. Based on the numerical
analysis, a design proposal is recommended
to taking into account of the interface normal
force in moment resistance. At the end, a new
construction method, to glue particles in the
interface, is suggested on account of the ease of
the construction procedure. Numerical models are
developed for the refined method and the structural
capacity is compared with the current design.
The refined method shows advantages in tensile
capacity, especially when shrinkage occurs in the
structure.

gelijkwaardigheidbegin-
sel aan te tonen dat de
flexvloer op afschuifdraag-
vermogen voldoet aan de
norm.
Met diverse handbere-
keningen is de dwars-
krachtcapaciteit berekend volgens de Nederlandse
normen. Tevens is met behulp van het eindige-
elementenprogramma DIANA het bezwijkgedrag
van vier proefstukken gesimuleerd in zowel 2D- als
3D-modellen. Van de vier proefstukken is vervolgens
de dwarskrachtcapaciteit bepaald met behulp van
een drukbank bij Dycore. De dwarskrachtcapaciteit
van de proefstukken was maximaal 40% lager dan
berekend.
dwarskrachtcapaciteit. Echter met een aanpassing
van de sterkte- en stijfheidparameters voor de
verbinding, kunnen de proefresultaten nauwkeurig
worden gereproduceerd in DIANA. Opmerkelijk is

On Isogeometric Analysis for Crack Modelling
Isogeometric analysis is a new method for the
analysis of problems governed by partial differential
equations. A geometric model is represented
exactly by basis functions generated from NURBS
(Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines). These basis
functions also represent the displacement field
of the problem. Advantages compared to the
finite element method (FEM) are for example
the elimination of errors in the analysis due to
geometrical approximations and the potential for a
new refinement concept, denoted by k-refinement,
next to adaptivity techniques as h-refinement and
p-refinement.
As isogeometric analysis is a new method, the
potential for crack modelling has not yet been
examined, even though this is a very interesting
topic in solid mechanics. Therefore, the aim of this
thesis is to examine the potential of isogeometric
analysis for crack modelling. As B-splines are easier
to work with then NURBS, only geometries based on
B-splines were considered.
Two different methods, the Partition of Unity
Method (PUM) and enhanced isogeometric analysis,
were investigated. In both methods, enrichment
functions were added to describe the discontinuous
displacement field. In PUM, the enrichment
functions are defined as the multiplication of the
Heaviside function with all basis functions whose
supports are intersected by the crack. In enhanced
isogeometric analysis, the definition of the
enrichment functions was based on remeshing.
The Partition of Unity Method was able to represent
a discontinuous displacement field in case of an
arbitrary crack geometry. Also, in case of thin
plates, PUM did not show any problems. On the
other hand, enhanced isogeometric analysis had
some difficulties with representing a discontinuous
displacement field in case of cracks crossing knots.
Nevertheless, enhanced isogeometric analysis
showed enough potential to warrant further
investigation.

A Very Large Floating Container Terminal
Floating structures may bring a flexible solution to
changing requirements regarding the location, size
and function of the port infrastructure. During this
thesis the technical feasibility of a floating container
terminal has been researched in co-operation with
Van Hattum en Blankevoort. A conceptual design
has been made of the floating container terminal
and its floating elements. Special attention has been
given to the hydrodynamics of the terminal and to
the connections between the floating elements. The
conceptual design is based on a case study of the
Western Scheldt Container Terminal. This location
has a tidal difference of about 4 m. Furthermore the
location is characterized by strong tidal movements,
currents and mainly short waves. The main loads on
the terminal are wave loads, container storage loads
and gantry crane track loads. The terminal may be
moved to a near-shore location in the course of its
lifetime.
The terminal consists of 120 rectangular pontoon
shaped elements with dimensions 180 * 50 *
16 m, resulting in a terminal of 2100 * 500 m.
The pontoons are connected rigidly to each
other in a stretching bond configuration. The
concrete pontoons are composed of rectangular
compartments. Inner walls are positioned
underneath the crane tracks.
The hydrodynamic behaviour
of the terminal and the
single elements has been
studied using the computer
application DELFRAC. The
terminal has been modelled as
a rigid single-body platform.
Response motions, wave forces, wave elevations
round the terminal and connection forces between
the pontoons have been determined with spectral
analysis of the results from DELFRAC. There is a
slight possibility that standing waves will occur
in front of the terminal. The wave transmission
towards the lee side of the terminal is small. The
response motions of the terminal are very small due
to the large dimensions of the structure.
The corner pontoon of the quay directly facing
diagonal wave attack has to resist the largest loads.
Therefore, this pontoon has been designed. The
design is based on simple manual calculations of
the internal forces of the pontoon. All structural
parts will be prestressed in two directions. A
rigid connection between the pontoons has been
developed. The selected concept is a vertical needle
vs. peg connection with discontinuous trapezoid
concrete studs. The studs (ca. 3000*3000*2500
mm) are constructed on the sides of the pontoon
and located on the inner walls.
The results from DELFRAC
have been translated into
static loads. The studs
are prestressed with 6
curved tendons, which are
distributed over the height
of the stud. Consequently, no sensitive anchors are
installed at the front of the connectors. The tendons
introduce the connection forces into the inner walls
and the top and bottom slab of the pontoon. The
tendons are anchored at a cantilever beam behind
an inner wall. The connection is tensioned by jacks,
which are constructed at the sides of the pontoon.
Thus, the pontoons can be easily disconnected. The
pontoons will be towed from the construction dock
to the site and coupled using a temporary structure.
During coupling, the pontoon will be de-ballasted
and towed into position horizontally.
The designed terminal is considered to be
technically feasible in the Western Scheldt. The
terminal is most suited for locations with shallow
waters with restricted wave and wind loads.

Laser welded steel bridge decks
This thesis discusses the fatigue problems in steel
orthotropic bridges. Also the problems with respect
to the road surfacing are discussed. The goal of
this thesis is to look for new materials and welding
techniques. The fatigue strength of orthotropic steel
bridges can be improved using new materials like
multiphase steels. The main subject of this thesis is
laser welding. Laser welding can be used to improve
the fatigue strength of orthotropic steel decks.
However, the geometrical layout and the flexible
behaviour of the steel deck have not changed. This
was the reason to investigate new deck geometries.
The application of laser welded
sandwich panels offers good
opportunities to improve the
deck layout. Sandwich panels
have been known for quite a
long time and have been used in
several applications such as ship
hulls, yachts and special parts
of cruise ships.
Laser welding makes processing sandwich panels
from one side possible. Till now, the application
of laser welded sandwich panels is limited to the
construction of ships’ decks. Jos. L. Meyer Werft,
Papenburg, Germany, developed the I-core panel.
Meyer was one of the first companies introducing
laser welding into the fabrication of sandwich
panels. Other applications of the I-core panel can be
found in balconies and footpaths in bridges.
To date there is little data available concerning the
fatigue strength of laser welded joints. Especially
regarding stake welds. The fatigue properties
of laser welded joints differ from conventionally
welded joints considerably. At this moment, the arc
welded joints are designed using hot spot stress,
nominal stress or the notch stress method. There
is no clear understanding of the applicability of
existing fatigue approach methods for the design
of laser welded joints. There is no understanding of
the applicability of the nominal, hot spot or notch
stress methods for the design of laser welded joints.
The test results available have been used to derive
design stress levels according to the Eurocode.
Much attention has been paid to the available laser
welding equipment and the metallurgical aspects of
laser welding.
Applying the I-core panels as top plate, supported
by stiffeners may be a good way to add stiffness to
steel bridge decks. The mechanical behaviour shows
a large reduction of the stresses in the top panel
which enhances the endurance of the road surfacing
significantly.

oude beweegbare bruggen, zoals ophaal-bruggen,
len. De ontwerpen met pultrusieprofi elen bestaan uit
kokervormige pultrusie-profi elen, driehoekvormige
structuur. Deze voorlopige ontwerpen worden met
behulp van eenvoudige rekenmethoden en een FE-
programma geanalyseerd.
Uit bovenstaande analyse volgt dat het beste
ontwerp het brugdek bestaande uit driehoekvormige
pultrusieprofi elen is.
onderzocht.

Design of an integral bridge by FE modelling
The most common design concept for bridges
consists of using expansion joints. Because of
variation in air temperature and time dependent
concrete effects, the bridge structure will change
in dimension in its longitudinal direction. Using
expansion joints makes it possible to change
dimension freely. Experience however has indicated
these expansion joints often do not perform
as well as expected. They require considerable
maintenance, which undermines the economical
operation of the bridges. As an answer to these
problems the jointless bridge was introduced, the
integral bridge.
To analyse integral bridges, in the current situation
of practice, several software tools are used in the
course of which the results obtained are combined.
The study performed, deals with an alternative
analysis procedure where, as a first step, a single
FE-package is applied. Preceding a preliminary
investigation is performed, describing the most
important input data on the behaviour of integral
bridges. Besides the most important advantages
and disadvantages of the integral bridge concept,
an extensive description is given of the actual
granular soil behaviour behind the abutment wall.
With it, an important phenomenon, the ratcheting
strain, is discussed. Ratcheting strain implies, a
wedge-shaped portion of the retained soil moves
toward each abutment during the annuals winter
contraction of the superstructure and concomitant
movement of an abutment away from the soil.
When the superstructure expands towards its next
summer maximum, this soil wedge does not return
to its original position. This is due to the inherent
non-linear behaviour of soil which might occur with
any type of soil, no matter how properly it is placed.
As a result of this soil movement, the lateral earth
pressure tend to increase over time. The preliminary
investigation treats the most important factors,
influencing the ratcheting strain process.
To initiate the design of integral bridges with
a single FE–package, an overview is given of
the different types of integral bridge modelling
techniques as applied in the past. A distinction is
made between the conventional spring model and a
non-linear spring model using a FE-package.
Part II of the thesis study performed, contains a
case study where a single FE package is used to
apply the integral bridge design concept. Therefore
a three span integral bridge is modelled with FE
program, MSC Marc Mentat. Both bridge deck
geometry and piles have therefore been modelled
with solid elements, containing appropriate concrete
characteristics. The non-linear soil behaviour has
been modelled with bi-linear springs in order to
reflect the soil behaviour sufficiently.
To evaluate the pile-soil interaction, a separate
analysis is performed to improve the non-linear
soil-pile behaviour. Therefore a single pile is
modelled with MSC Marc Mentat in the course of
which the pile head is both translated and rotated.
Subsequently, the same is done applying Msheet as
a single design tool, developed to analyse retaining
walls or piles. Both results have been compared
after which the FE 3D model is adapted such, similar
results are obtained. The case study continues
with a general description of the most important
load situations which have to be applied analysing
integral bridges. Subsequently both bridge deck
and pile have been checked in Ultimate Limit State
and Serviceability limit State. Maximum stresses
have been taken from FE 3D model by considering
contour bands.
Finally a parametric study is performed to evaluate
the influence of independent soil characteristics
to the entire FE 3D model. With it the increase of
lateral earth pressure coefficients, arising from the
ratcheting strain for instance, is studied as well.

Larch Round Wood and its applications
heden dunningshout vrij. Dit hout wordt voorname-
lijk verbrand voor de energiesector of versnipperd
voor bospaden, terwijl het ook uitstekend geschikt
is voor constructieve toepassingen. Vanwege de
kleine diameter (tot 150mm) wordt het dan slechts
terug gefreesd tot een uniforme diameter en
toegepast als rondhout. Om het gebruik hiervan te
stimuleren, is het internationale CONIFERS project
gestart dat de beschikbaarheid, sterkte-eigenschap-
pen en mogelijke constructieve toepassingen onder-
zoekt.
Voor dit afstudeerproject worden deze onderwerpen
toegepast op inlands Japanse lariks. Hiervoor is
ontworpen uitkijktoren, uitgevoerd in lariks rond-
spanningsniveaus.
Om een
betere rela-
tie te lunnen
leggen tussen
de Site-index
en dichtheid
van inlands

lariks, zullen
verdere tests uitgevoerd worden op stammen
afkomstig van verschillende lokaties in Nederland.
Hiermee kan dan ook het opgestelde selectiecrite-
rium gecontroleerd en eventueel aangepast worden.

Adaptive Anticlastic Membrane StructuresPrestressed by Edge Cables and Actuators
Frequently, initial membrane analysis will indicate
overstress in one or more areas under one or more
load cases. Conventional strategies to decrease
these critical stresses until the allowable values are:
- adjusting the initial prestress
- altering the support conditions
- changing the fabric
- adding cables
The disadvantage of these methods (except
altering the prestress) is that adjustments of
the critical stresses can only take place during
the design stage. This implies the tensioned
membrane structure cannot actively react (adapt)
to unanticipated loads. In this Master’s Thesis, a
method has been presented to actively alter the
overstresses due to wind uplift for a given saddle
shape without changing the prestress-level and
the membrane’s shape. To keep in touch with
reality, a case study has been done of a simple
saddle shape inspired on an existing pavilion
in San Sebastián, Spain. The dimensions of the
design were on purpose chosen larger than what
would be considered as ‘normal’ for such a shape,
namely to make the use of an active control system
necessary. After analysis followed wind load
(uplift) was decisive. The critical stresses were
way above allowed for the chosen fabric type. The
deformations were large too, even for membrane
structure standards. As the purpose of this project
was to dynamically alter the structural solicitation
during the life span of the structure, a solution as
changing the type of fabric was no option. A first
attempt to realize stress decrease was by unloading
of the edge cables through a swivel. Due to the
limited strain capacity of the cables, the achieved
corrections were not sufficient. After several other
unsuccessful attempts finding a method to control
the stresses, the solution was found by moving the
foundation point of the tension cable at the decisive
area of the fabric (Fig. 1).
As the figure shows, an actuator replaces the
tension cable. The main requirements regarding the
type of actuator is that it has enough force capacity
(a minimum of 380 kN) and a minimum stroke
(linear travel) of 800 mm. A movement ‘to the left’
(Figure 1) has –till the boundary is reached where
stability can be reached- a positive effect on stress
decline. Due to the changing angle that the actuator
makes with the ground level, the length of the
element has to change; this is possible due to the
minimum stroke demand.
What also has to be considered is how the actuator
can move in y-direction. There are several possible
solutions. Two have been briefly analysed, namely
a rolling and a sliding system. In both cases the
actuator is placed on a trolley, which is connected
by two actuators at both far ends. Depending on the
necessary movement, one of them is activated.
The results of the effect of this adaptive system
were rather positive; a decrease of the maximum
stress (and hence critical stresses) due to the
decisive load case, i.e. wind uplift, of 22% is
considerable. However, controlling the deformations
through this method appeared less successful, the
positive effect was negligible.

Gekromde Hoogbouw
Steeds hogere gebouwen worden gerealiseerd,
ook met bijzondere gebouwvormen. In het afstu-
deeronderzoek zijn de (on)mogelijkheden van een
gekromd hoog gebouw onderzocht. Het gebouw-
volume slingert hierbij om de verticale as. Een
randvoorwaarde was dat het percentage
verhuurbaar vloeroppervlak (VVO) niet
nadelig beïnvloed werd door de
aanwezigheid van de constructie.
In het onderzoek is gebleken
dat naast windbelasting ook het
eigen gewicht van het gebouw,
door de steeds wisselende excen-
triciteit, voor grote zijwaartse
vervormingen zorgt. Vooral in de
bouwfase ontstaan hierdoor problemen
omdat deze vervormingen onregel-
matig en dus moeilijk te controle-
ren zijn.
Er is een constructief concept
ontwikkeld dat deze vervor-
mingen volledig voorkomt. Het
concept berust op druppelvormige
modules die ten opzichte van hun
eigen middellijn in evenwicht zijn.
Twee rijen met gestapelde modules
geven samen de gewenste uiter-
lijke vorm van het gebouw.
Door de twee rijen tijdens
de bouw fysiek geschei-
den te houden zal het
geheel alleen verticaal
zakken. De modulevor-
men, en daarmee de
gehele gebouwvorm,
kunnen willekeurig geko-
zen worden. Dit geeft
ontwerpers veel vrijheid.
In een casestudie is dit
concept middels een eigen
ontwerp getoetst.
den. In de andere richting is de kern smaller en
wordt geholpen door de centrale kolommen van
de modules middels een outriggerconstruc-
tie. Lokale liften zijn afwisselend links en
rechts aan de kern gehangen, zodanig dat
de gekromde vorm van het gebouw niet
aangetast wordt en veel ruimte bespaard
wordt. Twee vleugels aan weerszijden
van de kern zijn opgebouwd met het
moduleconcept en geven het gebouw
de gewenste gekromde vorm.
Constructief en technisch gezien
is een dergelijk gebouw goed
mogelijk. Daarnaast is het
percentage VVO dat gehaald kan
worden gelijk aan een vergelijk-
baar verticaal gebouw, wat zeer
verrassend genoemd mag worden.

Optimizing future risk management at Fluor based on historical project data
Background
Fluor is one of the world’s largest global EPC
(Engineering, Procurement and construction)
contractors, with 2005 revenues of US$ 13,2 bn.
The company serves five main industries: Energy
& Chemicals, Power, Industrial & Infrastructure,
Government and Global Services. The Haarlem
office is mainly involved in projects in the Energy
& Chemicals business line. As a result of recent
changes in the market situation of the EPC sector,
the projects that Fluor undertakes are becoming
ever riskier.
Objective
The objective of this research was to extract
valuable, risk knowledge and experience from a
large pool of underutilised, historical risk data
covering all project phases. With the re-use of this
information, risk management at Fluor can be made
more effective in the future.
Research and Methods
The research distinguishes two major phases in the
risk management process:
• Pre contract award – initial risk analysis
• Post contract award – continuous management of
risks
In order to establish how this process can be made
more effective, both qualitative and quantitative
research methods have been used:
• Qualitative:
- Literature research
- Involvement in the Haarlem offi ce’s risk process
- Interviews
- Case studies
- Brainstorm sessions
• Quantitative
- Analyses of historical risk database
Conclusions
Fluor’s ongoing effort to re-use historical
information in order to optimize the risk
management process ensures that:
“The future of risk projects at Fluor is bright if
we learn from all the risk projects of the past and
present, and creatively apply what we have learned
in our new pursuits”.

partijen. Bovendien schept wet- en regelgeving een
beperkend kader waarin een weginfrastructureel
werk moet worden gerealiseerd.
Door verschillende projecten in samenhang te bekij-
ken kunnen rendabele en onrendabele projecten
financieel en/of ruimtelijk gecombineerd worden tot
één financieel haalbaar project. (Zie figuur 1)
Een dergelijk combinatieproject kenmerkt zich
door grootschaligheid en complexiteit. Betrokken
partijen hebben een duidelijk spelregelkader nodig
waarin zij kunnen acteren. Om daarin te voorzien
is een publiek – privaat samenwerkingsmodel (PPS
– model) een oplossing.
In het PPS – model treden gebruikers, opdrachtge-
ver en leverancier gezamenlijk op als opdrachtgever
voor verschillende (deel)projecten. (Zie figuur 2)
Partijen plaatsen hun belang in een grotere context.
Zo ontstaat een mogelijkheid om vanuit verschil-
lende belangen aan één gemeenschappelijk doel te
werken.
ming is vooraf gegaan.
ren. Private partijen willen vroegtijdig bij planont-
wikkeling van publieke projecten worden betrokken

Shaping the Virtual Wind Tunnel
Development of a general approach for computational wind engineering (CWE)
In the design of buildings, wind load has become
an important parameter. Methods to accurately
predict the magnitude of these loads are needed
to design and construct buildings in an economic
way. For complicated designs this is not an easy
task, since the building codes and standards do
not apply to these designs any more. Using wind
tunnel experiments works well for nearly completed
designs, but in the earlier design stages they are
not useful, since they are expensive and time-
consuming. As a solution, computer modeling
is proposed, using a technique referred to as
Computational Wind Engineering (CWE), which is a
sub-domain of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
This report describes the fields that are involved
in CWE: fluid dynamics, wind engineering and
computational methods (such as finite volume
methods and turbulence modeling) and gives
an overview of numerous tests that have been
performed with the use of FLUENT, which is a CFD-
software package. These tests where performed
within the Van Nalta domain, which has been slightly
modified to improve both range of applicability and
accuracy.
The goal of this thesis was to improve the Van
Nalta domain and make it fit to be the basis for a
design tool that enables the structural engineer
without much knowledge about wind engineering
to predict wind loads in the early design stage and
to quickly calculate and compare several alternative
geometries, finally making shape optimization with
respect to wind load possible.
It is concluded that a coarse grid, with cells in the
order of magnitude of 12x12x12 m3, is necessary to
be able to quickly perform series of calculations, for
example to determine the governing wind directions.
The coarse grid, when certain demands on grid
density and quality are met, is able to perform this
task. For actual determination of the drag and local
pressure distributions, a medium grid with cell sizes
in the order of magnitude of 6x6x6 m3, performs
reasonably well, the improvements found with the
fine grid (3x3x3 m3) are not large enough to state
that this grid is necessary for design calculations.
The main problems still lie in the limited computer
power, which limits the cell size, and the poor
turbulence modeling, which limits the range of
applicability.

Construction of Prefab Concrete Shells
Morphology – Surface Segmentation – Concrete Composition – Production Method
The construction of prefab concrete shells has
stagnated. This, in the decennium that much
research is performed on different innovative
concrete compositions, on the area of integrated
computer design and manufacturing and on efficient
and low-cost production methods. An integral
and optimal design-production process for prefab
concrete shells, lacks.
The aim of this Master’s Thesis is to make a step
in advance in the optimisation of the design-
production process of prefab concrete shell in order
to produce mass-customised shells and stimulate
their re-flourish.
The goal will be reached by;
- Optimisation of the aspects of the design-
production process
- Recognition of the relationships between the
aspects
- Defi ning an integral design-production process
by linking the design, segmentation and the
production
The studied aspects of the process from design until
the final assembly of the prefab concrete shell’s
segments are the subjoined five steps;
The design and definition of the shape of the thin
shell structure
Calculation of the structure plus meshing of the
structure to perform a FEA
The choice of concrete composition
The segmentation of surfaces in order to derive
individual producible elements
The final production of the elements in a formwork
Results
It is concluded that;
• There is not one solution for the optimal design-
production process as all described possibilities
of morphology, surface segmentation, concrete
composition and production method are options
for an optimal design-production process. When
the right choice is made between the possibilities
for a certain aspect of the design-production
process, the design-production process will be
optimised.
• The mass-customisation of simple, as form-
finding as well as free-formed shells, is realistic.
• The defining of the optimal design-production
process is to be performed by trial-and-error of a
relation scheme.
• When emphasis is on the morphology of the
shells, recommended is to start the process by
defining morphology, followed by defining the
concrete composition, and the calculation. The
order of the next steps to be followed is variable.
These next steps are the surface segmentation,
choosing a production method and defining the
connection system. After each decision, feedback
must be performed to the related aspects.

Kinetic Space Frames
An exploration into double curved multiple stable space structures
Static structures are designed for maximum
imposed loads which rarely occur. Due to this
strategy these structures are 99% of their lifetime
over-dimensioned. In these periods of low imposed
loads the structure could with the same construction
materials create more challenging configurations.
The efficiency of the used materials increases.
Besides, the re-configuration can be used to
optimise the building qualities for the fast changing
user demands, one of the main arguments for
Kinetic Architecture.
The goal of this Master’s Thesis was to develop
a dynamic space frame. This space structure
can transform it shape but is still stable in all its
configurations. The re-configuration of the space
frame is a result of lengthening and shortening of
some of the tubes. Therefore one needs adaptive
elements which can change lengthwise.
A statically undetermined kinetic space frame
is designed, according the square-offset-square
configuration with in its top layer mainly static
bars. Of each pyramid, of four bracings, three are
static; the bottom layer consists of only adaptive
elements. A parametric system is developed which
determines the configurations for the space frame,
which are infinite. The speed of length-adaptation
is for every adaptive element different during the
transformation.
In a case study the kinetic space frame is applied
as large scale kinetic roof. The application as
large kinetic space roof demonstrates that the
total amount of steel used for tubes can be
reduced with 36% compared to a conventional
space frame. Therefore the structure can create
the same configurations as conventional space
frames with less material. For the short term this
only compensates
the investments
when it is applied
on extraordinary
buildings like
pavilions. However,
the implications for
the long term are
an unknown factor
and dependent of
further research, also
on claddings, and
economics.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics
In this graduation project the Smoothed Particle
Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is explained
and demonstrated for some simulations in the
application field of hydraulic engineering. SPH is a
Lagrangian particle method which uses a smoothing
function to find spatial dependencies between
particles. The particles carry all the quantities
and no grid is needed. Because the particles can
move themselves the total material derivative of
quantities can be used, this avoids problems with
advective transport. SPH can be used to solve the
non-hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations to model
water motion. The fluid in SPH is made slightly
compressible (density variations maximal 1 %) to
get a time derivative of the density and calculate
the pressure explicitly from the density. The fluid
is not approximated as incompressible because an
implicit Poisson equation for the pressure needs
to be solved then, which is cumbersome to do in a
particle method. Viscous stress terms are simulated
with an artificial viscosity. The artificial viscosity is
also needed for numerical stability. The free surface
in SPH simply is the transition between an area
with particles and an area without. Fast varying or
intersecting surfaces like in overtopping waves are
no problem to model. Boundaries are modeled with
boundary particles with a repulsive force for all fluid
particles coming close. Ghost fluid particles are
created outside of a boundary to prevent artificial
boundary effects.
A 2D version of SPH is programmed and used in
several simulations from the hydraulic engineering
practice. Some viscosity benchmark problems
showed that the artificial viscosity approach indeed
works like a viscous stress term. Furthermore SPH is
used to simulate some problems with a free surface.
These include:
• Breaking dam
• Bore at a wall
• Standing wave in a closed basin
• Spilling and plunging waves on a beach
• Flow over a sharp weir
In these simulations SPH gave realistic results.
he simulations in this thesis show that SPH can
be used in many different situations in hydraulic
engineering. Especially in problems with large
pressure gradients, fast varying water levels and
intersecting free surfaces the advantages of SPH
show to full extend. Unfortunately a small time
step is needed for stability, together with many
particles needed for enough resolution, this leads
to considerable calculation times. The application
of SPH is therefore restricted to local and short
phenomena. SPH can be used in situations where
many other methods fail, for instance wave
overtopping can be simulated in great detail.
Although SPH is a relatively new technique in the
field of hydraulic engineering, its future looks
promising.

Feasibility of IGW technology in offl oading hoses
Since the late 1950’s offloading hoses are used for
the offloading of crude oil in the offshore industry.
The main problem with the current offloading hoses
is the limited flexibility and the low resistance
against fatigue which results in a short lifetime (1
to 12 years). A composite technology called Integral
Geodesic Winding (IGW) has been developed at
Delft University of Technology which concerns a
new type of composing artificial fibres and rubbers.
This results in a tubular structure which resists high
pressures and is flexible and lightweight.
The main topic of this research is whether or not the
use of IGW in offloading hoses is feasible, because
the technology shows potential for implementation
due to the expectation that IGW leads to higher
flexibility and a longer lifetime. An important part of
the research is to find the influence of the varying
diameter that is inherent to the technology on the
loss of pressure in the hose. Finally the feasibility is
determined by the advantages and disadvantages
it offers for two different types of players in the
industry: the hose manufacturer and the system
engineer / end user who respectively design and
use the offloading facility.

“3D numerical simulation of a harbour fl ow, applied to Waalhaven, Port of Rotterdam”.
The Port of Rotterdam has requested to investigate
siltation problems and the silt trap in the Waalhaven
(figure 1). There has been started with the
simulation of the flow in a small scale model harbour
(figure 2) to investigate the flow features and the
way they can be modelled. Measurement data of
this model harbour have been used for calibration.
The value of the chosen horizontal eddy viscosity is
of major influence on the resulting flow pattern.
The application of two
vertical grid-models,
the σ-model and the
Z-model, has been
compared. Harbours
with entrance angles
of 90 and 45 degrees
have been modelled.
For the ‘slanting’
harbour two methods for the calculation of the flow
along staircase boundaries have been compared.
With the ‘Cut Cells’ method the control volume
of the cell is truncated and the velocity is only
calculated for the two non-boundary sides of the
grid cells. For the ‘45 degrees closed boundary’
method the advection terms are corrected as well.
This method can only be applied to 45 degrees
boundaries with Z-model grids. This method shows
the largest improvement of the flow along the
boundary.
The Cut Cells method only shows a small
improvement compared to not applying any method.
Both methods are also applied at a 1:1 scale model
for the same harbour geometries and for a 71
degrees ‘slanting’ boundary. The application of the
‘Cut Cells’ method shows a larger improvement
than at scale 1:200, especially for the 71 degrees
slanting harbour. With this knowledge a model
has been made for the Waalhaven. Due to the
lack of necessary data the model has also been
calibrated with help of the scale models. This
qualitative Waalhaven model shows that tidal filling
and the mixing layer are both important exchange
mechanisms. Sediment and density flows need to be
investigated, they can be of major influence. This
can only be simulated by a three-dimensional model.
Conclusions which can be drawn from this
investigation are that the application of ‘Cut Cells’
or preferably ‘45 degrees closed boundary method’
shows a large improvement on the flow along
staircase boundaries. The choice for a vertical Z
or σ-grid model does not influence the result a
lot. It is possible to model the flow at the surface
of the Waalhaven with DELFT3D (figure 3). It is
questionable if the flow along the bottom, which
is important for modelling sediment flows, can be
modelled representatively, because the boundary
conditions are dominant. In a sequence to this
investigation the major issues will be the gathering
of data for the calibration of the Waalhaven model
and to find out the dominant exchange mechanism.
Findings and results will be presented in dutch
during this master thesis presentation.

Estimating Freak Wave Occurrence Probability in the Agulhas Current
Strong ocean currents, such as the Agulhas
current, have been related to the occurrence of
freak waves for quite some time, as many ships
encounter high waves in these areas. Non-linear
self-focusing (or modulation instability) of wave
groups has been suggested as the cause of these
events. This process can be described by the non-
linear Schrödinger equation, and numerical results,
supported by laboratory observations, confirm that
waves can be generated with this equation that
may be described as freak waves: a single wave as
part of a monochromatic wave train growing rapidly,
while extracting energy from the surrounding
waves.
The occurrence probability of such a wave can be
expressed in terms of the Benjamin Feir Index (BFI),
the ratio of steepness and spectral bandwidth of the
wave spectrum. This index can be estimated from
wave fields that are predicted with (linear) spectral
wave models from predicted wind field.
In the present study, the effect of large-scale ocean
currents on the evolution of the BFI in such a model
(SWAN) is investigated. The SWAN calculations show
that the evolution of both steepness and spectral
bandwidth of incoming waves is affected by the
current field (by energy bunching, current-induced
refraction and frequency-shifting), with the results
depending on the wind conditions. The combination
of the increased steepness and local decrease of
spectral bandwidth induces a considerably increase
of the BFI (compared to a situation without an
ambient current), at locations with strong counter
currents and at locations with high velocity
gradients.
In storm conditions in the Agulhas current, the
increase of the “freak wave” probability (a wave
height exceeding 2 times the significant wave
height of the local wave field), can be one order of
magnitude compared to the occurrence probability
of Rayleigh distributed linear waves.
Based on these results, a freak wave forecasting
system as operated at ECMWF, would therefore
locally underestimate or overestimate the
occurrence probability when strong ocean counter-
currents are not taken into account.

Infl uence of a secondary channel on bed morphology and sediment distribution at a river bifurcation
For the river forelands “Huissensche Waarden”,
situated at the south of Arnhem, a project
is started with an aim for riverbroadening,
nature development, recreation and ecological
improvement. The most important part of this
project consists of a secondary channel, a river
bypass alongside the summerbed. Besides
advantages like the decrease of the waterlevel
in case of extremely high water situations, the
construction of such a secondary channel has also
some negative consequences.
In this thesis, the main subjects of research are the
resulting morphology changes in the summerbed
as well as the distribution of water and sediment at
a bifurcation point (IJsselkop), which is situated in
the area. Two complementary studies are added:
the influence of variation in the distance between
the bifurcation point and channel outflow point
and the influence of variation in channel outflow
angle on the water- and sediment distribution at the
IJsselkop.
The research is executed by using Delft3D, a
numerical software package in which flow and bed
morphology can be modelled, using a home-made
orthogonal grid. An inflow distribution is made from
a flow data range of 25 years and geographical
terrain information is added to the grid. All model
computations are made by using an approximation
of the shallow water equations and a sediment
transport formula.
Construction of a secondary channel in the
river forelands will lead to sedimentation in
the summerbed alongside it, because of the
decreasing flow velocities. The largest volumes of
sedimentation will appear in front of the channel
inlets during high waterlevels. In spite of their
downstream transport and diffusion, they will
cause navigability problems. The erosion, which
is visible in front of the channel outlet during high
waterlevels, is behaving in a comparable way,
with the risk of causing instability problems near
(groyne) structures.
There will be measured less transport at the
beginning of both branches (Nederrijn & IJssel),
because of the decrease in flow velocities. The river
tries to recover the sediment transport capacity
of the branch and will erode. The mentioned
sedimentation and this erosion are temporary
effects: after many years a new bed level
equilibrium is reached.
Variation of the distance between the IJsselkop
and the channel outflow point and the variation
of the channel outflow angle do not have a large
impact on the distribution of water and sediment at
the IJsselkop, even if very wide angles and a large
secondary channel discharge are chosen.

Smart Nourishment of the Frisian Inlet
Morphodynamic analysis of an innovative way of nourishing
The integrity of the Dutch Wadden Sea is
threatened by the effects of sea level rise and
subsidence due to gas extraction leading to sand
deficits in the tidal basins. An innovative idea to
mitigate these effects by nourishing the ebbtidal
deltas, thereby promoting sedimentation of the tidal
basin, has been put forward in recent years. This
thesis studies the morphodynamic behaviour of
these so called smart nourishments for the ebbtidal
delta of the Frisian Inlet.
To investigate if nourishing the ebbtidal delta
leads to sedimentation in the basin the following
questions are addressed:
• How do the hydrodynamic forcings infl uence the
morphological behaviour of the nourished sand,
and how do the morphodynamics of the nourished
ebbtidal delta and the tidal basin interact?
• Where should a smart nourishment be placed in
such a way that natural processes redistribute the
sand relatively quickly to the benefi t of the basin?
A model of the Frisian Inlet has been set up
in the process based modeling environment of
Delft3D. Three situations are studied: (1) a “fixed
bottom” with the hydrodynamic forcing of the
tide, (2) a “fully” morphological situation with the
hydrodynamic forcing of the tide and (3) a “fully”
morphological situation with the forcing of tides
and waves. For these situations the morphological
evolution of seven smart nourishment alternatives is
investigated.
For a fast redistribution of nourished sand it is
advised to nourish the channels. This results in
a near immediate effect during flood (import of
sediment with flood flows). Exported sediments
may be imported in a later stadium when they are
brought back into the sediment transport paths
(e.g. by wave action). The nourishment alternatives
on the ebbtidal delta depend on wave action.
Sediment first needs to be stirred up by wave
action before it is transported by tidal flows and
redistributed over the ebbtidal delta.
The current study is an interesting first step in the
investigation of this new type of nourishment only.
To develop increased insight it is recommended to
(1) model longer time spans (5 to 10 years) and (2)
investigate the behaviour of smart nourishments
with a larger volume. Furthermore our knowledge
on modeling complex coastal inlets in a realistic
manner for a longer term needs to be improved.

Sand Balance “Loswal Noord” - The Net Contribution of “Loswal Noord” to the Sand Budget of the Dutch Coastal Foundation
The port and waterways of Rotterdam need
constant dredging to maintain a nautical depth.
The spoil from these dredging works was dumped
from 1964 till 1996 on “Loswal Noord” (LN), a
dumpsite North of the “Maasgeul”. LN is located in
the dedicated so-called “Dutch Coastal Foundation”
(DCF), which by definition stretches from dunes till
-20 m NAP. The sand budget of this DCF needs to
be maintained to provide the Dutch coastal defence
with sufficient sand. The objective of this thesis is
to investigate the net contribution of LN to the sand
budget of the DCF.
Sand emission from LN which is transported
southwards is assumed to be deposited in the port
and waterways of Rotterdam. Sand emission from
LN transported northwards remains in the DCF,
as no net transport cross -20 m NAP is assumed.
The sand part of the dumped spoil is from 1964 till
1996 captured in the DCF. However since 1996 the
spoil from the port and waterways of Rotterdam
is dumped offshore the DCF. Hence sand emission
from LN southwards after 1996 is lost for the sand
budget of the DCF.
Sand from capital dredging, dredging works offshore
-20 m NAP and from river discharge can have a net
contribution to the sand budget of the DCF. In 1996
the net contribution of LN to the DCF was 132,4
Million Tons Dry Solids (MTDS) or 82,8 Million m3
(Mm3) sand in-situ.
The total amount of sand of LN is determined with
soundings and geological surveys and is in 1996
140,3 MTDS. A part of this will be transported
southwards in time. This part is determined by the
asymmetry in sand transport from LN in a direction
South and North alongshore.
The asymmetry is sand transport from LN is
determined by analyzing the probability of
exceeding a certain value of seabed shear stress (by
combination of waves and currents) in a direction
South and North alongshore. From this is concluded
40 % of the sand emission from LN is transported
South and 60 % North alongshore. 40 % of the
total sand amount of LN determined in 1996 will be
lost for the DCF and equals 56,1 MTDS. Analyzing
the mass balance of LN leads to the prediction
that it will take more than 100 years before LN is
completely eroded. By then the total contribution
of LN to the sand budget of the DCF will be 132,4 -
56,1 = 76,3 MTDS or 47,7 Mm3 sand in-situ.
The results of this investigation should be
interpreted with a certain degree of uncertainty.
Geological surveys with representative drillings can
determine the actual amount of sand of LN more
accurately. The distribution of the sand emission
from LN should be further investigated with a
morphological model.
It is recommended to create a wide basis of
consensus for the net contribution of dumping spoil
to the sand budget of the DCF. Further research
on the distribution of artificial sand piles within the
DCF is recommended to analyze the contribution to
coastal defence on short to long term. With these
recommendations the dumping policy for assigning
optimal dump locations should be reviewed.

Geomatrically open fi lters in breakwaters
A breakwater with a sand core and an unstable
geometrically open filter can be a more economical
solution than a ‘conventional’ breakwater with
a rock core. Also more flexibility is obtained in
designing a breakwater when it is possible to design
a breakwater with an unstable geometrically open
filter. For such a breakwater, insufficient knowledge
is available to design geometrically open granular
filter constructions, which allows an acceptable and
a predictable loss of core material under certain
conditions. At this moment no proper design tool is
available to design a geometrically open filter for a
breakwater with a sand core.
The Master thesis has two objectives. The first
objective is to get an insight in the transportation
of sandy material out the core into a very open
granular filter under influence of wave load.
The second objective is to obtain a relation ship
between; transport rate of material, initiation of
transport, grain diameter base material, grain
diameter filter material, thickness of filter layer and
the hydraulic load. In order to reach the objective,
more insight is necessary in the transport process
inside the filter
layer and at the interface of core and filter. To
obtain that, some model tests have been conducted.
These model tests have been executed in a wave
flume.
Nine process based model tests have been
performed with regular waves with a height of 10
cm and a period of 1.2 s. The first two experiments
were used to tune the test setup. The other seven
experiments had different thickness of the filter
layer (df) and different grain size
(Df50) of the filter material. Due to
limitations in time and availability of
the facilities other parameters then
the df and Df50 such as the wave
height and the slope steepness have
been kept constant at a value which is
typical for breakwaters or wind waves.
During these seven tests, the profile of the core
was measured and visual observations have been
made. Based on the visual observations the erosion
process was described. The transport of core
material was governed by sheet flow transport
and suspension transport. With a thick filter
layer and a small grain size the core material was
mainly transported by sheet flow transport. With
a decreasing thickness of the filter layer and an
increasing grain size of the filter layer, the transport
of core material was increasing and the transport
was shifting from sheet flow transport to suspension
transport. During the tests, a profile develops which
resembles a bar profile of a sandy beach. The
profile of the core was measured by making every
300 waves a photo through the wall of the flume.
These photos were interpreted with the computer
in order to measure the profile of the core. The
amount of erosion was dependent of the grain size
and the filter thickness. An important parameter
is the dimensionless parameter m (m = the filter
thickness divided by the grain size of the filter
material (df/Df50)).

Vetiver grass as bank protection against vessel-induced loads
In many parts of the world, bank erosion in rivers,
canals and other waterways is a major concern
for engineering as well as environmental reasons.
Hundreds of hectares of land on riverbanks have
been lost annually and thousands of kilometers of
dykes are threatened by wave erosion caused by
motorized boats in for example the Mekong Delta,
Vietnam.
In a number of tropical countries Vetiver
grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) is a well-known
bioengineering species for decennia now. Recently,
some exploratory tests have been executed to see
if Vetiver grass is suitable as erosion protection.
There is, however, still a lack of both qualitative and
quantitative knowledge on the protection of banks
by Vetiver grass.
This M.Sc. thesis study consisted of a theoretical
investigation of all possible influences of Vetiver
grass on bank erosion, which resulted in a couple
of aspects to be investigated by experiments. The
following experiments were carried out:
The influence of phreatic level and soil type on
the growth rate of Vetiver grass was investigated
by an experiment carried out in the Botanical
Garden. Significant differences were observed on
the influence of soil type and phreatic level on the
growth rate of Vetiver grass.
Laboratory tests were executed in order to examine
the influence of Vetiver grass roots on some
relevant soil parameters related to mass failure. An
increase in the factor of safety of approx. 20% was
found, although the result was not significant.
The influence of Vetiver grass on so-called “small
scale mass failure” (pushing off of material and
shallow seated failure planes) was tested using
a physical model test. The drawdown caused by
passing ships was modeled a large number of times
in succession by a wave flume at the Laboratory
of Fluid Mechanics. The amount of erosion of a
representation of a bank (with and without Vetiver
grass) was determined and compared. The presence
of Vetiver grass on a cohesive soil resulted in a
reduction of the amount of erosion by 8-10 times on
cohesive soil.

Design of granular near-bed structures in waves and currents
This MSc project studies the design of near-
bed structures, more specifically horizontal bed
protections and offshore pipeline covers. The
present design methods are all based on the
approach developed by Shields (1936), which is
strictly speaking not applicable in non-uniform
flow (such as flow around a structure, offshore
conditions with a combination of waves and
currents, and increased turbulence rates). Also,
the Shields approach results in a ‘critical stability’
design philosophy in which no movement of the
stones is allowed; it does not allow for other, more
flexible ‘damage-based’ design approaches in which
some movement of the stones is accepted. Many
suggestions to overcome these issues have been put
forward in literature, especially in the last decade
or so. This MSc project reviews a selection of these
suggestions and analyses the most promising among
them against a dataset of scale model tests.
The main results from this research are summarised
as follows:
• The damage to horizontal bed protections is likely
to be related to the transport of the stones that
make up the protection; this transport is caused
by the current and enhanced by the presence
of the waves. Unfortunately nearly all existing
(morphological) transport formulas have been
developed to predict transport rates of sand,
not stones. The transport of stones is essentially
different: occasional rolling or sliding along the
bed as opposed to bulk transport in suspension.
In addition, these formulas use the bed shear
stress as the governing parameter, so in order
to make them work for a combination of waves
and a current the combined bed shear stress
must be calculated. This is not straightforward
as the current and the waves infl uence each
other in a nonlinear way; various wave-current
interaction models to account for this interaction
have been put forward in literature. This thesis
investigates some of these. The main conclusion
is that the rock transport formula of Paintal (1967)
can also be used in the combination of waves
and a current, provided that the resulting bed
shear stress is calculated with the wave-current
interaction model by Fredsøe (1984)
• For pipeline covers an alternative design approach
must be followed, in which the damage to the
structure is expressed as a dimensionless erosion
area and directly linked to the hydraulic boundary
conditions. Several design formulas of this type
have been put forward in literature, but there is
little consensus on which (structural and hydraulic)
parameters must be included in such a formula
and the overall goodness-of-fi t of these formulas
on a dataset of scale model tests is low. In this
MSc project the individual (sometimes confl icting)
elements of these formulas are all tested against
the dataset using a regression analysis; eventually
a new design formula is presented that shows less
scatter. Also, some practical recommendations on
how to interpret the resulting damage parameter
(S-value) are given.
• The critical stability approach (Shields approach)
is also studied for a combination of waves and
a current. It follows that the wave-current
interaction model by Bijker (1969), already
commonly used in engineering practice, can best
be used in this case in combination with a critical
Shields parameter Ψcr = 0.030.

Run-up Reduction through Vetiver grass
Vetiver grass is used in tropical regions to stabilize
soil structures and arable land. Because of its stiff
stems and firm roots, flow velocities are reduced
and the soil retained. The application of Vetiver
grass on the outer slope of a dike is investigated
in this report. The objective is to determine the
effect of Vetiver grass hedges on the run-up. Also
the effect of different planting configurations on the
run-up has to be discussed.
Different research shows that the layer thicknesses
and velocities on a location on the outer slope
depend on the maximum run-up height and the
height of the location. The overtopping volumes
over a dike depend mainly on the fictitious run-up
height and the crest height.
A dense hedge of Vetiver grass is able to pond
water. A relationship can be found between the
water depth behind the hedge and the specific
discharge through the hedge. About the failure
of Vetiver grass hedges little is known, however
research shows that a Vetiver grass hedge is able to
pond water up to 40 cm.
Tests are conducted on small-scale. Vetiver grass
hedges is modelled as vertical plates with vertical
slits. The blocking factor is determined by use of
the relationship between the water depth and the
specific discharge of a Vetiver hedge. A blocking
factor of 75% corresponds with a Vetiver hedge.
Different plates with different slit widths are used to
determine the effect of the width of the slits on the
results.
The measures in the tests are chosen so that the
dependency of the results on the openings are is
negligible. For tests it can be derived from theory
that the relative reduction of the run-up height only
depends on the blocking factor. The theory that the
reduction of the run-up for the tests is independent
of the run-up height could not be rejected. The
results of the tests show a constant reduction of
the overtopping volumes. The breaker parameter is
important for the reduction of the run-up height. It
is assumed that the different amount of turbulence
in the run-up tip with different breaker parameter,
causes the dependency of run-up height on the
breaker parameter. With a blocking factor of 75% a
reduction of the run-up volume of more than 55%
is measured. A blocking factor of 60% causes a
reduction of the volume of 40%.
The flow through the openings in the tests is drag
dominant. For larger run-up the flow remains drag
dominant. Thus modeling a Vetiver hedge by a plate
with larger openings is allowed. An example with the
use of Vetiver grass on a dike in Vietnam is worked
out. This example shows that with the use of two
Vetiver grass hedges on a dike a reduction of 90 cm
of the crest height is feasible. This corresponds with
a reduction of 20% of the costs and material use in
this example.

Equilibrium and stability of a double inlet system
Coastal features that are much seen over the world
are barrier island coasts like the Wadden coast of
The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. These
coasts constitute of barrier islands separated by
tidal inlets with at the landward side a tidal basin.
Characteristic for the Wadden Sea is that the tidal
basins of each system are not completely separated,
but are divided by a topographic high which allows
some exchange of water between the basins. As
a result the tidal basins and the tidal inlets that
connect the basins to the North Sea will interact.
The focus in this thesis is mainly on the effect of
this interaction on the cross-sectional equilibrium
and stability of the tidal inlets that are part of a
double inlet system in order to develop rational
management plans for this kind of systems.
In determining the equilibrium values and stability
of cross-sectional areas use is made of flow
diagrams. With the help of these flow diagrams
for two situations the stability conditions are
determined:
1. A double inlet system where the basins fl uctuate
uniformly
2. A double inlet system with partition and opening
simulating a separately fl uctuating water level
between the basins
To verify whether the
model presented in
this study generates
plausible results an
application to the Texel
and Vlie basins in the
western Wadden Sea is

Siltation of Incheon Terminal basin and the Approach Channel
Seoul Metropolitan Area is the heart of the fast
growing South Korean economy.
Nowadays, Incheon Port is the only harbour for
this area and is expanding very fast. The present
harbour capacity already causes delays for ships
that have to wait for berthing.
Subsequently, all the goods must be transported
from Incheon Port to their final destination. This
causes large congestion problems on the roads from
Incheon Port to Seoul. To solve these problems
the Korean government decided to investigate the
feasibility of an inland waterway to Seoul.
On August 28th 2004 a contract was signed for the
feasibility study and master plan of the “Kyung-In
Canal project” between the Korean Water Resources
Cooperation (KOWACO) and the consortium DHV
Environment and Transportation and SAMAN
Engineering Consultants Co. The project consists of:
1. The Kyung-In Canal connecting the sea with the
Han River;
2. Two terminal areas, named Incheon Terminal and
Seoul Terminal, at both ends of the canal;
3. The dredging of an Approach Channel.
This study focuses on the siltation of Incheon
Terminal basin and the Approach Channel.
The annual siltation is an important factor in the
economical feasibility of the project. To guarantee
sufficient water depth for vessels entering Incheon
Terminal maintenance dredging or other measures
are required. These measures are money consuming
and may form an obstacle for navigation.
The siltation of Incheon Terminal basin depends
on the amount water that enters the harbour basin
per tidal cycle and the sediment content of the
water. This sediment influx in Incheon Terminal
basin is governed by three mechanisms: tidal prism,
horizontal eddies in the harbour entrance and
density currents. Given a tidal range in Kyunggi Bay
that is reaching up to 9 metres in the Project Area,
the study mainly focuses on the siltation caused by
tidal filling. This mechanism includes two processes.
The tidal filling via the Approach Channel into
Incheon Terminal basin and tidal filling via the inter-
tidal area in front of Incheon Terminal basin. The
latter is involved with the sediment influx in Incheon
Terminal basin caused by the flood current across
the inter-tidal area.
For this study use is made of the one-dimensional
network model ‘SOBEK River & Estuary’ (SOBEK
RE). The model SOBEK RE provides insight in
the mechanisms that are caused by tidal filling.
Although SOBEK RE is suitable to simulate the tidal
wave, the capabilities of SOBEK RE with respect to
predicting siltation rates in Incheon Terminal basin
are questionable. Therefore the suitability of SOBEK
RE to improve the understanding of siltation in
Incheon Terminal basin caused by tidal filling is part
of this study.

Uncertainty in the application of Bay Shape Equations
From the several existing empirical equations that
describe the planform of a bay, the Parabolic Bay
Shape Equation (PBSE) is the only one that explicitly
assesses an equilibrium bay shape. Research has
been performed on the uncertainties regarding
the static equilibrium planform (SEP) plotted by
this equation but results have been of qualitative
nature. By means of an expert elicitation an attempt
was made to quantify this uncertainty by applying
the PBSE on two existing bays in southern Brazil:
Taquaras/Taquarinhas and Bay of Imbituba. The
elicitation was held under experts in the field of
coastal/hydraulic engineering and the software
program MEPBAY, was used to translate the position
of the control points into the SEP’s corresponding to
the bay. The distribution of the location of the SEP
along certain profiles of the bay was determined.
The overall bias of the location of the SEP calculated
over the four profiles in the case of Taquaras/
Taquarinhas Bay is in the order of 40m (landward)
and the average bandwidth is 116 m. The bandwidth
and standard deviation of the SEP increase when
moving alongshore toward the curved section of the
bay, meaning that the uncertainty in the application
of the PBSE is dependent on the particular point
of interest along the bay. From the elicitation was
also observed that when volunteers are directly
confronted with the result of the placement of
the control points (a plotted SEP) a much smaller
variation in the position of the SEP occurs. This
in turn means that the PBSE is a robust method
provided the user sees the result of his/her choices
in placement of the control points.
After quantifying the uncertainty when applying
the PBSE to a stable bay an unstable situation
was analyzed. For this case the bay of Imbituba in
southern Brazil was chosen. The construction of a
breakwater to shelter the port of Imbituba in the
south of the bay was accompanied by an increase
in sedimentation of the port. Superimposed plots of
the coastline of the bay of Imbituba from different
years confirm a general trend of accretion of the
southern part of the bay accompanied with a
retreat of the coastline in the northern part. After
the application of the PBSE it was clear that the
breakwater caused a change in the equilibrium
state of the bay. Between 1947 and 2001 the Bay of
Imbituba has changed from a dynamic equilibrium
to a close to static equilibrium in the northern part
of the bay and an unstable equilibrium status in the
southern part. The tendency of the sedimentation
of the southern part of the bay can be explained by
looking at the SEP belonging to the new up coast
diffraction point (tip of the breakwater):
The seaward position of the SEP predicts a need for
sediment in order to achieve a stable planform.

nodig is).
Barrierdeur.
(5 m).

uitgewerkt.
145m toegepast. Er is onderzocht in hoeverre deze
sectordeuren geschikte afsluitmiddelen zijn voor de
scheepvaartopeningen in de Westerschelde en wat
de gevolgen zijn van de schaalvergroting.
Tijdens het onderzoek is onder andere gebleken
dat het bestaande hoofddraagsysteem niet meer
voldoet.
leiden.

Door grond horizontaal belaste palen
In met name West-Nederland bestaat de ondiepe
ondergrond uit slappe klei- en veen-lagen. Indien
verticale belastingen op het maaiveld worden
aangebracht ontstaan in weinig draagkrachtige
gronden naast verticale verplaatsingen ook hori-
zontale grond-verplaatsingen. Bestaande en nieuwe
palen in de omgeving ondervinden hierdoor hori-
zontale belastingen waardoor buigende momenten
en dwarskrachten in palen ontstaan. Door deze
belastingen kunnen de palen ontoelaatbare scheur-
vorming vertonen of bezwijken, hetgeen ongewenst
is.
In Plaxis 2D is gebruik gemaakt
van geavanceerde materiaal-modellen; Soft Soil (SS)
en Hardening Soil (HS). De invoerparameters zijn
aan de hand van samendrukkings- en triaxiaalproe-
ven bepaald.
Grond-paal interactie:
Aan de hand van een eenvoudig
fictief geval zijn de methoden
met elkaar vergeleken. Als gevolg
hiervan kunnen geen absolute
uitspraken over de resultaten
gedaan worden. Met behulp van
een schema met de mogelijke
modelcombinaties, zijn verschil-
lende berekeningsvarianten door-
gerekend. Begemann-DeLeeuw
geeft over het algemeen grotere
momenten en is sterk afhankelijk
van de randvoorwaarden. MSheet
Single Pile vertoont een grote
spreiding die afhankelijk is van
de gekozen invoerparameters. Plaxis 2D is geschikt
Plaxis 3D Foundation modellering is relatief eenvou-
dig en biedt veel mogelijkheden. Er wordt sterk
aanbevolen de grond-paal interactie ook aan de
hand van een praktijkmeting te valideren.

Capacity study for the port of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Due to global growth of container transportation
the port of Buenos Aires handles more and more
containers. Now in the year 2005 the throughput is
almost at its highest levels and changes to the (wet)
infrastructure are necessary in order to keep up
with the increase of the container throughput.
No reliable description exists of what the waterway
capacity will be for the Port of Buenos Aires with
respect to the future Port improvements. Based
on present plans for development of the port,
detailed analyses must be made of the congestion
of the port of Buenos Aires related to the expected
increase of traffic.
The main goal of this Thesis is to determine the
capacity of the port of Buenos Aires, with the
computer model Harboursim, in relation to future
growth of ships and container throughput.
The first stage the present traffic flow is simulated
to get a base case. Six scenario’s with each a
different future traffic growth were implemented in
the model with the actual traffic Port configuration
(2004). These simulations lead to the main
conclusion that when traffic is increasing minor Port
improvements are necessary to avoid unacceptable
w aiting times.
In the second stage four different Port
improvements are simulated. The improvements
consist of:
1. Dredging the access channels
2. Introducing better handling equipment
3. Filling up a basin and constructing a new longer
quay wall
4. Changing the navigational rules for passenger
ships
At last these four improvements were subjected
to a Cost-Benefit analysis to find the return on
investment and to decide which one is the most
beneficial for the port of Buenos Aires

Dynamic Response of a Transatlantic Tunnel to a Hypersonic Train
A transatlantic tunnel from New York to London
has been designed in order to create a fast train
connection between these two cities. The tunnel
floats at a depth of 300 m and is attached to the
seabed by cables. The train will be magnetically
levitated and travel in vacuum to minimize friction.
The tunnel geometry is determined by balancing the
horizontal and vertical forces acting on the tunnel:
the drag force from ocean currents, buoyancy,
gravity and the force from cables. The resulting
structure is a steel tunnel with an inner diameter of
10 m and a wall thickness of 0.317 m. The Kevlar
cables (Ø 50 mm) are attached to the tunnel under
a 22.5˚ angle with the vertical in sets of two. The
centre-to-centre distance between the cable sets
equals 500 m. Ocean current and a difference
between gravity and buoyancy cause the tunnel to
bend 0.084 m upwards and 0.010 m horizontally
between two cable sets. This bending combined
with the hydrostatic pressure from the ocean yields
a maximum stress of 52 Nmm-2 in the tunnel shell.
Based on the proposed tunnel geometry, a dynamic
analysis is carried out to determine the tunnel’s
steady-state dynamic response to
a high velocity train. The tunnel is
modeled as an elastic circular cylindrical
shell. The water around the tunnel is
accounted for by a velocity potential
field to model fluid-tunnel interaction.
The cables are modeled as two
continuous springs along the tunnel.
The train is represented as a moving
and periodically varying distributed
load. The obtained dynamic problem is
solved in the frequency-wavenumber
domain by applying Fourier transforms
to the tunnel’s equations of motion.
The results are transformed back
into the time-space domain using a
FORTRAN program to obtain the tunnel
displacements.
A critical train velocity of 18.9 ms-1 is found using
a dispersion analysis. At this velocity, resonance
occurs and the vertical tunnel displacements grow
large. For lower velocities, the displacements are
localized close to the moving load and decrease
exponentially from it. The maximum vertical
displacement of 52 m is found at the train’s position
for a train velocity of 10 ms-1. For supercritical
velocities, elastic waves in the tunnel shell will travel
away from the train. Behind the train, long waves
with large amplitude can be found. In front of the
train, short waves with small amplitude are present.
The maximum vertical displacement is 34 m for a
train velocity of 50 ms-1 and can be found 6000 m
behind the train. For a train velocity of 2200 ms-1,
the maximum displacement is 0.80 m. The maximum
stresses caused by the dynamic response of the
tunnel for a train traveling at 50 ms-1 are as small as
6 Nmm-2 and even lower for higher velocities. The
calculated stresses and displacement do not raise
major structural concerns.

ning in SIMGRO.
In
een watersysteem zijn allerlei ingrepen mogelijk. In

The infl uence of compartmentalisation on fl ooding in Central Holland
Door recente ontwikkelingen, onder andere de
overstromingsramp in New Orleans (USA), krijgt
de overstromingsproblematiek in Nederland bijzon-
dere aandacht.
Centraal Holland in kleinere compartimenten. Hierbij
men, zoals zeer goede evacuatieplannen en –routes.
(of compartimenteringsplan) zal dus zeer robuust

Suitability of natural tracers for determination of runoff generationA study in the Maisbich catchment (Luxembourg)
Many hydrological models contain different modules
to estimate storm flow and base flow, but calibration
of these modules is often problematic. With tracer
calculations it is possible to separate the total runoff
into different contributions, thus calibrate common
hydrological models. A branch of the Maisbich in
Luxemburg was chosen for research. This area is
about 0.33 km2 large and mainly agricultural.
Many sources are located and investigated.
This resulted in an initial classification and
conceptualization of three source water types,
each linked to a different runoff mechanism and
reservoir, namely subsurface water, groundwater
and surface runoff. To verify this concept and to
conduct a hydrograph separation with these water
types, measurements were taken of discharge and
several chemicals. Chemical measurements indeed
seem to sustain the concept.
Each source has been monitored for a number of
chemicals. These chemicals are tested for their
suitability in tracer calculations. This analysis led
to two chemicals, which are suitable as a tracer:
calcium and potassium. For these chemicals a first
hydrograph separation has been conducted. The
results of these first separations look promising and
provide a basis for further research.

Land Subsidence and Water Management in ShanghaiA study into the reason, prevention methods and future development of land subsidence in Shanghai.
Land subsidence is a geological process that is
accelerated by man through long-term exploration
of the groundwater. Land subsidence combined
with sea-level rise creates a serious environmental
problem in coastal regions.
Land subsidence is an international hot issue
because it threatens many large cities. This thesis
is about land subsidence in Shanghai. In Shanghai,
land subsidence leads to permanent loss of ground
elevation, lowers the standard of flood prevention
measures, and increases the risk of natural disasters
such as typhoons, rainstorms, floods and spring
tides. In summer, due to the complex interactions
of land subsidence, flooding of the Yangtze river,
local rainstorms, typhoon surges, and annual high
tides, the impact of flood and water logging can be
very severe. Urban land subsidence occurs in active
regions of economic growth between areas which
gives rise to a heat island and an associated rain
island. In all, land subsidence is an important factor
which affects city development in Shanghai.
In this thesis, land subsidence theory is explained in
detail. Historical data on land subsidence are used
as a reference. Subsequently, present measures are
evaluated. Trends in land subsidence are predicted
and some suggestions are given on how to solve
this problem in the future.

Hergebruik van Afvalwater: Duurzame bron of onnodig risico?
In this MSc thesis a case study has been carried
out about the possibility of re-using the secondary
effluent of a waste water treatment plant (WWTP)
as a source for the production of drinking water
in Amsterdam. Amsterdam has two drinking water
production locations. The ‘river dune’ production
line takes water from the Lekkanaal (near
Nieuwegein) and transports it to Vogelensang.
The infrastructure of this production line is about
50 years old and Waternet is confronted with the
question whether or not they should continue with
this water transport. A new, large WWTP is being
built at the west side of Amsterdam and will start
operation in 2006. This WWTP will produce an
amount of secondary effluent that could be used for
the production of drinking water.
Generally spoken there are three ways to re-
use wastewater for drinking water supply: the
production of drinking water out of secondary
effluent (direct, planned re-use) artificial recharge
with waste water effluent (indirect, planned re-use)
and the current situation with artificial recharge
of surface water (unplanned re-use). These three
alternatives were studied for the drinking water
supply of Amsterdam. Basic design considerations
resulted in a block and process diagram.
For all three alternatives the risks, the costs and
the environmental were calculated. For the risk
calculation a Monte-Carlo simulation was used
and (extreme) scenarios were subjected to the
designs. A closed dune extraction proved its value
during these extreme circumstances while the
direct re-use of wastewater resulted in
high health risks. The calculated costs
and environmental impact did show
that the direct re-use could have some
advantages.
The re-use of waste water for the
drinking water supply is besides a
technical challenge but also a sensitive
social subject. For the consumer the
continuity of drinking water supply and
the quality of the supplied water are
issues of their concern.
It can be concluded that in the
Netherlands there is no shortage of water
and therefore the re-use of wastewater
adds an unnecessary (microbiological)
risk to the drinking water treatment.
The re-use of waste water is not necessarily more
sustainable than situations without re-use. The
advantage of decreasing the discharge of secondary
effluent is balanced by the increased energy
consumption, since the treatment plants for re-use
need membranes.

Substandard Supply Minutes in relation to risk management for water supply
The design of drinking water systems, production
and distribution included, should be designed in
adequate manner to keep functioning in hazardous
or emergency situations. As time passes systems
loose their ability to fulfil their function and
maintenance, corrective and preventive, becomes
necessary. Decisions on design as well as on
maintenance are often taken based on previous
experiences, as there may be a lot of uncertainties.
To cope with decision making under uncertainties
risk management is introduced. A risk management
approach is introduced. This approach is a cyclic
process consisting of the following phases: risk
analysis, risk evaluation and prioritisation, risk
control, and evaluation of risk control measures.
Performance and costs are two key concepts in
asset management. The level of performance can
be divided in the level of delivery of water and
the level of customers’ services. The quantitative
and qualitative aspects of the level of delivery are
the main focus in the second part of this report.
The term OLM was introduced to make the level
of performance of delivery towards customers
measurable. OLM is a Dutch term that stands for
minutes of insufficient delivery per customer per
year. Activities, which could lead to OLM incidents,
were registered. These activities were divided into
activities, which lead to disruption of supply (in
transport, distribution and connection mains), and
activities leading to pressure and quality incidents.
In a pilot study, of which the results are discussed,
it became clear that the average OLM value for
2005 was about 36:20min. After this a case study
was conducted looking more in depth at the OLM
data of 2 companies who participated in the pilot.
The objective of this case study was to look more
in depth at the main activities causing OLM and
possible ways to reduce OLM. For both companies
a list of top 3 causes, as well as suggestions for
reducing OLM are included in the conclusions. The
general conclusion was that the main causes of OLM
were activities leading to disruptions in distribution
mains. Recommended was that improved
maintenance reducing the occurrence of leakages
could decrease OLM.
Finally OLM is looked at in the broader perspective
of risk management, in which decisions are based
upon uncertainties. Something is first said about
larger production incidents, such as calamities and
disasters. These incidents lead in certain situations
to high values of OLM, which hold some ground for
including these incidents in the future when talking
about the OLM approach.
Another factor decision are often based on is an
economic optimum. A start is made to find an
appropriate economic optimum for a single main.
The economic optimum was between corrective
maintenance and costs for replacement and
renovation. Based on the outcome of this calculation
some recommendations are done.

Development of Indirect Potable Reuse in impacted areas of the United States
Later resources are in short supply in many areas
of the United States. Water supply is impacted by
the increasing risk of periodic droughts and on-
going development. In response to both concerns,
additional water supplies are being developed.
Water reclamation is viewed as a new source of
water and is being rapidly developed in many
areas, particularly in Southern California, Arizona,
and Florida. Despite the need for additional water
and the promise of water reclamation, there are
technical and institutional barriers that challenge its
implementation and development.
In order to quantify the amount of reclamation
and the problems associated with its development,
a survey of both successful and failed projects
in California, Arizona and Florida was performed.
These three states were selected because of the
need for reclamation due to arid conditions and
rapid development, as well as previously attempted
successful and unsuccessful projects. Affiliation
with Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR) was the main
criterion for selecting projects. IPR is a method of
reusing treated waters and wastewaters for potable
use through at least one environmental barrier that
serves to isolate, as well as protect consumers.
Examples of barriers include a groundwater basin
or reservoir providing more than one-year retention
time. Projects involving IPR are much harder to
implement because of the public’s concern and
there are many noteworthy examples.
A survey was conducted by collecting historical data
on each plant as well as visiting the plant. Current
records were obtained including assessments
of their evolving water treatment technologies.
Twenty-six projects were reviewed and nineteen
of the projects were visited. The relevant laws and
regulations that governed the project were also
reviewed. The various projects were categorized by
size, technology, goals, successes and failures. The
results are presented in tabular form and patterns
of successes and failures are identified. Relative
costs are presented.
Technological barriers were not a limiting factor.
Institutional barriers and challenges, such as public
perception, local politics, risk communication,
and impacts of confusing or partially developed
regulations were most often limiting. The most
successful projects involved the public and other
stakeholders before the conception of the project.
Lower water reuse objectives (Non-Potable Reuse
(NPR)) were more easily implemented than higher
use projects (IPR). There were no examples of
successfully implemented Direct Potable Reuse
(DPR) found in the United States. In some cases,
projects that began with IPR goals were converted
to or augmented with lower use goals by displacing
potable water with reclaimed water.
A review of the technologies of successful projects
reveals a declining use of traditional water
treatment technologies, such as granular media
filtration, carbon adsorption, lime clarification,
ammonia stripping and chlorination with membrane-
based technologies, such as (submerged) Micro
Filtration (MF), Nano Filtration (NF), Reverse
Osmosis (RO), disinfection with Ultra Violet (UV)
light, and advanced oxidation with hydrogen
peroxide.

Netwerkconcepten in Ruimtelijke Planning

Machine Learning techniek, namelijk Decision Tree
Learning.
beslisbomen is.
(OHRA) of 4 (Delta Lloyd) jaar.
(zie figuur). Bovendien kunnen de bomen bepaalde
combinaties die leiden tot een specifieke schade-
kans distilleren, maar niet relevante combinaties
achterwege laten. De regressieformules gebruiken
altijd allemaal alle combinaties van eigenschappen
in hun voorspelling.
ling is echter begrensd.

mobiliteit. De verhoogde mobiliteit is voornamelijk
bereikt door een toenemend autogebruik. Echter
vervoersaanbod in ruimtelijke zin
te spreiden door het ontwikkelen
tangentiële lijnen. Daarnaast is

bepaald punt concentreert (puntevenementen),
afspeelt (lijnevenementen). Puntevenementen zijn
verder te verdelen in gecontroleerde en ongecon-
troleerde puntevenementen. Bij gecontroleerde
puntevenementen, zoals concerten, is het aantal
bezoekers redelijk tot goed voorspelbaar en zijn
aankomst en vertrek geconcentreerd in tijd. Voor
ongecontroleerde puntevenementen, zoals beurzen,
steld. Op topdagen komen ca. 60.000 bezoekers,
waarvan de helft met de auto. Gevolg: congestie
en parkeeroverlast in woonwijken. Uitgangspunt is
must is.
drukte afhankelijk eenrichtingsverkeercircuit i.c.m.
tieve) spitsen.

of verkeerskundige projecten is veelal complex.

zoomen. Hierdoor kan men de oorzaak van proble-
men beter achterhalen.

Concrete LNG FPSO
Natural gas is the fastest growing energy source in
the world’s fuel mix. The most economic solution for
its long distance transport is to liquefy it. Liquefaction
reduces the volume by approximately 600 times. The
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is shipped by dedicated
vessels at a temperature of approximately –163 oC.
Remote gas fields (far away from existing
infrastructure) fail to be produced due to technical
and economical reasons. Technology development
in gas processing and market developments may
make production of these remote gas fields feasible.
However production of these fields would require a
Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel
(FPSO), which would produce and liquefy the gas. The
LNG would then be loaded into shuttle tankers, which
deliver the LNG to the gas markets.
Construction of the LNG containment system is
time-consuming and constructing a LNG FPSO with
its large dimensions will impose restrictions on the
shipyard capacity to also execute other (LNG) projects
simultaneously. The increasing demand for LNG
carriers will cause the construction prices to rise. Also
taking into account current high steel prices, it may be
interesting to look for feasible alternatives for a steel
FPSO.
As concrete FPSOs may be a solution, Single Buoy
Moorings (SBM) and Gusto liked to investigate the
feasibility of a design for a concrete LNG FPSO.
Two concepts
have been
considered.
One concept
is based on a
state-of-the-
art concrete
(Compact
Reinforced Composite) and
one is based on a more
conventional type concrete.
Compact Reinforced
Composite (CRC) is a high
performance concrete,
which incorporates small
steel fibres and a very
dense reinforcement mesh.
Constructing in CRC allows
for very slender cross-
sections compared to constructing in conventional
concrete. However the material costs of CRC are
considerably higher than the costs of conventional
concrete.
The hull design also includes production methods
and a cost estimate. The prospective owner is not
dependant on a shipyard to construct a concrete
hull. The hull can be constructed in an excavated
construction site. It was concluded that the costs of
an FPSO hull in conventional concrete are competitive
with the costs of a steel hull of comparable size.

Offshore LNG (liquefied natural gas) import terminals
provide safe and cost-effective alternatives to shore-

FSRU uptime is mainly related to performing a
successful offloading cycle. Environmental conditions
may reduce the FSRU availability when motions of the
concerning vessels rise above the limiting criteria. The
present study provides insight in the hydrodynamic
responses in the hold-station, offloading and sail
away stages of the offloading cycle and consequently
improves the quality of the prediction of terminal
availability.
In the hold-station phase, the LNG carrier is kept on a
stationary position, 150 m aside of the FSRU, by means
of two assisting tugs. Maintaining control over the LNG
carrier is a key parameter. The required tug forces and
pull angles are computed for every 3-hour timestep of
a hindcast weather database. The tug performance in
waves is addressed by analyzing the wave field around
the free-floating LNG carrier. Tug operations at the
carrier’s bow end appear to be hardly affected but
the stern tug operates in an effective significant wave
height of 0.2 to 1.8 times the undisturbed incident
wave height. As a result, the available bollard pull from
the tug decreases with 10-16% per metre effective
significant wave height.
During the offloading stage of the cycle, the carrier is
moored alongside the FSRU by means of 16 mooring
lines and 4 pneumatic fenders. The maximum loads
in the mooring lines and fenders, together with the
maximum relative motions at the offloading point,
form the limiting criteria. This approach is fast and
straightforward but does not account for the detailed
environmental data that is available from a hindcast
database.
Time domain simulations of several 3-hour intervals
from a database have shown that actual maximum
responses may be significantly differing from values
resulting from the lookup tables. However, full time
domain (low and wave frequency) simulations for
a complete database are unfeasible due to long
computation time.
As an alternative to full time domain simulations,
the responses can be computed by a combining time
and frequency domain simulations. Wave frequency
responses are derived from the frequency domain,
in which calculations are 150 times faster than in the
time domain. Non-linear low frequency wave drift
responses are computed in the time domain and stored
in tailor-made lookup tables. Non-linear effects are
less notable in low waves and therefore calculations in
the frequency domain only (low and wave frequency)
can be used to determine the maximum responses for
significant wave heights up to 2.0 meters.
In the sail away stage of the offloading cycle, the LNG
carrier is pulled away from the FSRU once all loading
arms and mooring lines have been released. Two tugs
assist the carrier in this operation. The tug forces and
pull angles, needed to compensate for environmental
loads, are computed for every 3-hour timestep of an
environmental database. The forces and angles can
be evaluated against limiting criteria in order to obtain
statistics on sail away stage feasibility.

Extension of pipelay capacity on Allseas’ Solitaire by S-lift implementationDeepwater projects, which now are commercially attractive for oil companies, require installation of pipelines.
Allseas continuously seeks for technical improvement
and for the extension of their pipelaying capacity in
deep water. A possibility for further capacity extension
of the vessel Solitaire is the addition of the S-lift
system. The name S-lift applies to the S-lay installation
method where the system has an additional lift
capacity. After the pipe has left the stinger in almost
vertical direction, two clamps are attached to it. These
clamps are suspended from the cantilever by means of
cables. The combination of S-lift system and tensioners
hold the total pipeline weight. The benefit of S-lift is to
reduce the axial strain in the pipeline sections on the
stinger. Furthermore, the S-lift system adds tension
capacity, enabling heavy pipeline installations and
flooded installations for deep-water projects.
On one hand, the pipelay capacity depends on the
tension capacity of the S-lift and tensioners. On the
other hand, the maximum strain in the pipeline has to
stay within certain limits. Highest strain, a combination
of axial and bending strain, is found in the curved
pipeline on the stinger. Axial strain is generated by the
suspended weight of the pipeline. The bending strain
depends on the cross section radius of the pipeline and
the stinger radius.
The influence of the vessel motions on the pipeline
tension and maximum strain is included. The motions
considered are surge, heave and pitch, each motion
with a different phase. Sway, yaw and roll motions
are left out of consideration in the thesis, so a 2D
approximation is evaluated.
The three considered motions create a forced vibration
of the pipeline on the stinger. Inertia and drag forces
are determined by means of a quasi-static catenary
model. The S-lift system and tensioners holding
the pipeline possess flexibility, or spring stiffness.
Accordingly, the four described elements, namely the
forced vibration, inertia force, drag force and spring
force, are constituting a damped mass spring system.
The response of the pipeline to imposed ship motions
is determined by means of this damped mass spring
model. For all types of pipeline installations, the
natural frequency of the damped mass spring system
is higher than the frequency of the vessel motions. As
a result, forces are spring dominated and the response
of the pipeline is nearly equal to the forced vibration.
The S-lift clamps and the tensioners jointly absorb
the variable load. The load distribution between S-
lift and the tensioners depends on the stiffness ratio
between the two systems. Generally, the stiffness of
the tensioner system is higher than stiffness of the S-
lift system. Hence, the tensioners absorb most of the
tension variation. Increase of the S-lift stiffness has
little influence on the varying load on the tensioners.
Therefore, efforts for stiffness improvements for S-lift
are not recommended.
The implementation of S-lift has little influence on
the maximum diameter that can be installed. S-lift
enables a 10 to 20 % larger diameter installation. Yet,
the water depth capability is highly extended, with
40 to 60%. In terms of strain and tension limits, pipe
installation stays workable for wave heights that are
10 to 30% higher. The advantage of S-lift is limited
for dry installations, but it becomes larger for flooded
installations. Furthermore, benefits of S-lift are mostly
achieved for installations with a static tension of more
than 500 tons.
