Lateraal denken is gebaseerd op het opnieuw (anders) ordenen van bestaande informatie om op deze manier nieuwe informatie te laten ontstaan.

Normaal is de mens geneigd om een zo recht mogelijke lijn te volgen van begin naar einde via bekende wegen. Als ergens in deze lijn een onmogelijkheid of een schijnbare onmogelijkheid zit, gooien veel mensen de hele oplossing weg om een nieuwe te zoeken.

Iemand die lateraal denkt gaat verder met de ingeslagen weg met de gedachte "Stel dat het wel mogelijk zou zijn".

Hierdoor ontstaat een middel om verder te kijken dan die positie waar het schijnbaar onmogelijk leek. Dit kan leiden tot geheel nieuwe inzichten.

This approach is in large part a response to the increasing complexity of modern technology and modern business. That complexity takes many forms. Design thinking employs divergent thinking as a way to ensure that many possible solutions are explored in the first instance, and then convergent thinking as a way to narrow these down to a final solution.

Unlike analytical thinking, design thinking is a process which includes the "building up" of ideas, with few, or no, limits on breadth during a "brainstorming" phase.

The design thinking process has seven stages: define, research, ideate, prototype, choose, implement, and learn.
