Op de kruizing van de Minervalaan met de Apollolaan was ooit door H.P. Berlage een grootstedelijk knooppunt bedacht met als absolute hoogtepunt de Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten. Door verschillende invloeden is deze er nooit gekomen, maar verrees uiteindelijk onder de noemer ‘The New Way of Life’ het Hilton op deze locatie. Iets wat het hotel al decennia lang niet meer waar weet te maken. De opgave voor de locatie aan het einde van de Minerva-as is tweeledig. Enerzijds moet het programma sterk bijdragen aan een levendiger geheel op deze grootstedelijke locatie, anderzijds moet het gebouw aansluiting vinden in zijn stedenbouwkundige context.

Met de Rietveld Academie als programma wordt terug gegrepen naar het oorspronkelijke Plan Zuid van Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Hij beoogde als tegenhanger van het Station Zuid, wat in zijn ogen symbool stond voor de Arbeid, dat aan de andere kant van de as als sluitstuk het symbool voor de Kunsten moest komen te staan: ‘De Academie voor de Beeldende Kunsten’. Door beide met elkaar te verbinden ontstond in zijn ogen de complete samenleving, en kreeg ieder zijn plek binnen Plan Zuid. De ontwerpopgave focust zich op het ontwerpen van de Nieuwe Rietveld Academie. Waarin onderscheid deze Academie zich ten opzichte van andere kunstscholen, en hoe wordt dit ruimtelijk tastbaar? En hoe gedraagd de Rietveld zich ten opzichte van zijn omgeving?

ConceptDe Rietveld Academie focust zich op het conceptmatig denken. Het conceptmatig denken wordt gevoed en versterkt door inspiratie. Door het creëren van ‘Chaos’ worden ogenschijnlijke zekerheden weggehaald zodat de student gestimuleerd wordt op onderzoek uit te gaan en zijn eigen weg te kiezen, inspiratie. Het generieke archetype school voldoet niet aan deze eisen. Door dit archetype uit elkaar te trekken ontstaat er een inspiratievol landschap gecreëerd door studenten in de tussenruimtes van het programma. In deze ruimtes komen verschillende disciplines elkaar tegen waardoor kruisbestuiving gaat ontstaan.

OntwerpHet ontwerp is opgebouwd uit verschillende modules,concentratie, die in een grid doormiddel van tussenruimtes, patio’s en pleinen met elkaar verbonden zijn. Het grid is ten opzichte van de stedenbouw 45 graden gedraaid. Hierdoor wordt de Rietveld duidelijk tastbaar in zijn omgeving. Door de draaiing wordt het ‘dwalen’ door het inspiratie landschap versterkt omdat naar oriëntatie binnen het landschap gezocht dient te worden. De hoofdrouting is als cirkel uitgevoerd waardoor er geen verschil meer is in hiërarchie tussen de verschillende richtingen. Aan de randen van het gebouw levert het gedraaide grid een getande gevel op. Hierdoor zijn diepe zichtlijnen in het gebouw mogelijk geworden waarmee de school flarden van zichzelf laat zien. Voor de benodigde concentratie kan de student zich ontrekken aan het landschap. Dit kan door voor de lichte ruimtes te kiezen, een stilte ruimte in het dak landschap, of een van de vele ‘foxholes’ in de studenten studio’s. In de donkere ruimtes onder het inspiratie landschap is plek voor het werken met audio en video.Door de Minerva-as in het gebouw te laten grijpen verankert het gebouw zich op de locatie. Door de as als helling uit te voeren wordt het dak ontsloten en ontstaat de plek voor een openbaar landschappelijk dak met ruimte voor veel kunst. Op de helling is de entree van de Rietveld gesitueerd, alsmede ook de entree van het publieke restaurant, het Student Art Hotel en het Sandberg instituut.

Architects, urban designers and landscape architects learn the profession at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture through an intensive combination of work and study. They work in small, partly interdisciplinary groups and are supervised by a select group of practising fel low professionals. There is a wide range of options within the programme so that students can put together their own trajectory and specialisation. With the inclusion of the course in Urbanism in 1957 and Landscape Architecture in 1972, the academy is the only architecture school in the Netherlands to bring together the three spatial design disciplines.Some 350 guest tutors are involved in teaching every year. Each of them is a practising designer or a specific expert in his or her particular subject. The three heads of department also have design practices of their own in addition to their work for the Academy. This structure yields an enormous dynamism and energy and ensures that the courses remain closely linked to the current state of the discipline.The courses consist of projects, exercises and lectures. First-year and second-year students also engage in morphological studies. Students work on their own or in small groups. The design projects form the backbone of the cur riculum.

Master of Architecture / Urbanism / Landscape Architecture Amsterdam Academy of Architecture

On the basis of a specific design assignment, students develop knowledge, insight and skills. The exercises are focused on training in those skills that are essential for recognising and solving design problems, such as analytical techniques, knowledge of the repertoire, the use of materials, text analysis, and writing. Many of the exercises are linked to the design projects. The morphological studies concentrate on the making of spatial objects, with the emphasis on creative process and implementation. Students experiment with materials and media forms and gain experience in converting an idea into a creation.During the periods between the terms there are workshops, study trips in the Netherlands and abroad, and other activities. This is also the preferred moment for international exchange projects. The academy regularly invites foreign students for the workshops and recruits well-known designers from the Netherlands and further afield as tutors.Graduates from the Academy of Architecture are entitled to the following titles: Master of Architecture (MArch), Master of Urbanism (MUrb), or Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA).
