In 1982 as a concrete follow-up of a consultation among activists, organized by
Ishvani Kendra, to discuss the problems and the unmet needs of women in our country.
Fr. E. Zeitler SVD was the inspiration behind this effort and he wanted to stimulate
a wider and deeper awareness of women's problems and their causes in view of working
out viable solutions.
Dr. Frances Maria Yasas, an American who has worked for the U.N. and a well
known social worker is the co-foundress and the first directress of Streevani. She
continues to be a pillar of strength for this organization.
Streevani aims at exploring the image women have of themselves in their multiple

SAI\ITULAI\
I. Vision:
SANTULAN (Social Animation Towards United Liberative Action) is a grass root
social organization established in the year 1977 with a vision of working towards the
"Liberation of socio-economically disadvantaged and marginalized section, with their
active participation and involvement towards building just egalitarian and humanitarian
society".
Ir. Focused Groups:
Santulan's focused groups are the children, child laborers, adolescents, lower
educated-unskilled mining youth, marginalized-landless women and men workers of Stone
Mining Sector, Rural and Urban slum women in the state of Maharashha India.
IIr. Major Programmes for women:
1. Wonen's Empowerment:
Women from lower socio-economic strata of Rural, Urban Slums and Stone
Quarries are getting organized with the stategy of Self help Groups. Over 100 SHGs are
been formed and various activities towards their empowerment are been conducted.
Women are advancing in self-emplo5rments, takittg up cornmon issues, reaching out tofamilies in difficulties and experience supportive attitude from family members and
society. Several women from the SHGs have been elected as the Panchayat members and
some have acquired places in various village committees.
Organization of widows and destitute is one of the important prograrnmers recently
undertaken. Workshops are been held and concern Government persons were been invite.d
to share on various schemes and programme. With the tedious follow-up over 50 widows
and destitute women have benefited from various Government schemes and programme.
2. 'Women's Credit Cooperative:
To make big money available for women the SHG members initiated a Credit
Cooperative of their own. The board of directors is being the common women as model
the entire business is managed by themselves and the progress ls remarkable-
3. Adolescent and youth development:
The youth girls of stone quarry have no skills and deprived of education due to
and siblings responsibilities they face problems such as child-maniage, sexualhouse
304
harassment, child labors etc. The youth being lower educated and unskilled find no
opportunities than in the stone qtrarries. We need to initiate technical skills training for the
adolescents.
4. Free Legal Aid cum Counseling Center:
The rate of atrocities on women and weaker sections in the target area is very high.
The SHGs at their level solve numerous cases. Incase of severe case the free legal aid cum
counseling center comes to teach out to the poor women and families.
So far'over 500 cases have been registered with the cell and over 96Yo cases are
solved amicably at our level. Legal awareness camps. Distribution of leaflets. Follow-up
of cases at the Police and Courts.
5. Awareness building cun Training Activities:
Santulan under takes various Awareness meetings, Rallies, Marches, Agitations
and Training prograrnme such as Aid awareness, water purification, Anti-liquor etc,
towards the empowerment of the focused target people by Santulan.
