QUOTE OF THE

DAYPackaging laws for tobacco products can’t be restricted to rich nations

In the WHO South-East Asia Region (SEAR), nearly 1.3 million people die every year due to tobacco usage. That’s 150 deaths per hour. Nearly 246 million adults smoke this cancer-causing agent while 290 million consume its smokeless forms. One of the most pow-erful ways to curb tobacco use is to opt for plain pack-aging. This means that logos, colours, brand images or promotional information are removed from the prod-uct packet. Instead, tobacco packaging features black-and-white or other contrasting colour combinations, a brand name, a product name and/or a manufacturer’s name and most importantly, graphic health warnings on it. The net result: The product will be less appeal-ing. Australia is the pioneer of the plain packaging initiative since December 2012. Research shows that plain tobacco packages have diminished appeal and have resulted in declining rates of tobacco use. Today, Australia’s daily smoking rate among in the 14+ age group has declined from 15.1% to 12.8% (2010-13). At present, France, Britain and Ireland are following the Australian example. The passage of plain-packag-ing legislation has been limited to high-income coun-tries. This needs to change. While tobacco consump-tion is on a downward trend among these countries, the opposite is true in low- and middle-income coun-tries. The developing economies of SEAR remain key markets for tobacco companies, who will fight to retain influence, brand loyalty and expand their markets. The cost of allowing this will be disastrous: Economies will be less productive; health care costs will increase; and the tobacco-poverty cycle will be-come entrenched. Important steps have been taken to control tobacco use across the SEAR. Ten of the re-gion’s 11 member countries are parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and they have implemented tobacco control legislation in line with the Convention’s provisions. Nepal, for exam-ple, has decided to have health warnings cover 90% of the principal display area of tobacco packs, while in Thailand health warnings cover 85% of cigarette packs on both sides. India recently increased the size of warnings from 40% on the front to 85% on both sides of all tobacco products packs. But there is con-siderable room for improvement. Children, youth and adults in countries across SEAR continue to be subject-ed to pro-tobacco messages in media. This must stop. The Seventh Session of the Conference of Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (COP7), hosted by India in November 2016, will be an opportunity to do that.

“Therefore from Uttar Pradesh, I want to announce this to my countrymen that this week our government’s Cabinet will take a decision and the retirement age of our doctors, whether in states or government of India, would be made 65 years instead of 60 or 62,”

- Citing shortage of doctors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced raising the age of retirement of government doctors to 65 years and said the Union Cabinet will give its nod to the decision this week.

cles doesn’t help the box office collections of Indi-an films. Neeraj Ghawy-an’s much-acclaimed Masaan, which was screened in the Un Cer-tain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festi-val, besides winning two awards, made a little over Rs.3 crore. SPORTS ROUNDUPLANXESS raises guidance for 2016 after strong first quarter

flipkart Offers rs 1.5 Lakh Bonus To Campus recruits Amid Joining Delay

Facing flak for postponing the joining dates of stu-dents hired from IITs and IIMs, Flipkart has offered Rs 1.5 lakh as an additional joining bonus to all campus recruits to ease their “financial burden” in case they are to pay back loans. Bengaluru-based Flipkart has cited restructuring of its businesses as the reason behind the deferring of joining dates for campus recruits from June this year to December. However, it did not disclose the number of campus offers made this year. There are, however, reports that suggest the move to defer the joining of re-cruits comes as a part of Flipkart’s efforts to cut costs amid funding crunch and falling valuations. “As we work on redesigning this programme, we have taken a decision to postpone the joining of new recruits by a few months. Instead of June 2016, the new recruits will now be part of the im-proved campus program in December 2016,” Flip-

kart has said in a blogpost.

Following a good first quarter, specialty chemi-cals company LANXESS has raised its earnings forecast for fiscal 2016. The company now expects to achieve EBITDA pre exceptionals within a cor-ridor of EUR 900 million and EUR 950 million. Previously, LANXESS had assumed earnings of between EUR 880 million and EUR 930 million. “We started fiscal 2016 with a good first quarter and the second quarter has begun well. For this reason, we are raising our guidance for the full year,” said LANXESS Chairman of the Board of Manage-ment Matthias Zachert. EBITDA pre exceptional’s climbed by around 14 percent in the first quarter of 2016 to EUR 262 million, compared with EUR 229 million in the prior-year quarter. This positive development was largely attributable to increased volumes, higher capacity utilization, positive cur-rency effects and the absence of the ramp-up costs incurred in the first quarter of 2015 for the new rubber plants in Asia. The EBITDA margin pre ex-ceptionals rose to 13.6 percent from 11.2 percent a

year earlier and was thus at a good level.

Reliance Retail’s Lyf brand seems to be gearing to launch the Flame 3 smartphone in India, which is now listed on a third-party online retailer. Priced at Rs. 3,999, the Lyf Flame 3 is currently ‘out of stock’ from the online retailer. At the time of writing, the Lyf Flame 3 was not listed on the company’s site. We can expect the handset to be available from the company’s site soon. The Lyf Flame 3 listing comes merely a few weeks after the launch of the Flame 2 and Wind 4 smartphones. The biggest highlight of the Flame 3 smartphone is it supports VoLTE (voice over LTE) with HD voice call compatibility. It sup-ports both 4G LTE bands in India - FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800MHz) and TDD-LTE Band 40 (2300MHz). The dual-SIM Lyf Flame 3 smartphone features a 4-inch WVGA (480x800 pixels) display and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box. The company says both SIM slots are 4G enabled; though, at one time only one SIM can use 4G while the other will work on 2G. The handset is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor clubbed with 512MB of RAM. It packs 4GB of inbuilt storage and supports expand-able storage via microSD card (up to 32GB). The Lyf Flame 3 sports a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash along with a 2-megapixel

front-facing camera.

Kolkata Knight Riders missed an impact player in their IPL eliminator against Sunrisers Hyder-abad at Delhi’s Kotla on Wednesday night. Gau-tam Gambhir’s ‘home’ advantage came to noth-ing as the two-time cham-pions failed to chase down a modest target (163) in innocuous batting condi-tions and lost by 22 runs. KKR’s reputation as a ‘solid’ team lay in tatters after Gambhir’s team missed a special player, who like Royal Challeng-ers Bangalore’s AB de

Villiers did not have the caliber to steer the former champions over the line.

Andre Russell’s absence in a crucial game left KKR in the lurch. The West Indian all-rounder, who was expected to play against SRH, was not on the playing XI. Gambhir said injured Russell’s absence hurt his team. “When you lose someone like Russell, it is difficult to replace,” said Gam-bhir in a post-match chat. Russell’s firepower down the order and his abili-ty to pick wickets have been big positives for

Shweta Singh and Shri Nivetha Paramanantham , the other Indians in the event shot 378 and 377 to finish 47th and 52nd respectively. With an aim to reduce injuries and enhance per-formance of the coun-try’s pacemen, Australian cricket team have been using the ‘torpedo tech-nology’, which is more commonly used in mil-itary settings, for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. According to the Guardian, sports scien-tists at Australian Cath-olic University’s School of Exercise Science have developed the revolu-tionary algorithm as the current method of report-ing of professional crick-eters’ workloads, which only measures the num-ber of deliveries bowled and not the intensity and effort required to do so,

Yet 160 wasn’t an impossible to-tal to get on a pitch that wasn’t a minefield. Gam-bhir agreed. “I thought it was a very good wicket to bat on, 160 was cha-seable. I thought Colin (Munro)’s run-out was a turning point,” Gam-bhir explained. Knock-out games like the one between KKR vs SRH expose big match temper-ament and ability. While Yuvraj Singh proved his class with a robust 30-ball 44 at No. 4 for Hyderabad, KKR missed a man who could play the role of an anchor. The sci-entists have, instead, rec-ommended in the British Journal of Sports Medi-cine that coaches should use missile-guiding mi-crotechnology implanted in newly-developed wear-able devices, which would run the so-called ‘smart algorithms’. According to sports scientist and co-author Dr Tim Gab-bett, the same technology is used to navigate sub-

marines, guided missiles and spacecraft. Reflecting more on this technology, fellow ACU sports scien-tists Dean McNamara said that measuring bowling intensity for individual balls or sessions will pro-vide context for the acute and chronic workload of the individual bowler, and ultimately the prepared-ness of the bowler for the maximal workload of the immediate competition.

‘Congress-mukt Bharat’ has become a buzzword for political discourse in the country after the state election results earlier this month saw the Congress party lose its government in two of the three major states (out of the 20 such major states in the coun-try) that it had held till re-cently. Now it is left with just Karnataka till 2018, when the elections are due there. If anti-incum-bency catches up with this southern state – given the Kannadigas’ recent elec-toral preference to throw out the incumbent gov-ernment after five years – then the wash-out of the Congress would be, more or less complete. The par-ty would be then left with a couple of tiny north-east-ern states to draw its sus-tenance from. Narendra

CM wants research on Centre and State govt schemes

Modi’s call in 2014 for a Congress-mukt Bharat would then become a virtual reality before the next General elections in 2019. The Congress’s predicament is such that it is wilting under the weight of anti-in-cumbency where it is in power and it is not able to bounce back to power where it is in the opposi-tion. It is a predicament that is symptomatic of a death-wish. For the Con-

gress, it is turning out as if electoral decimation is a self-fulfilling prophe-cy. Is the decline of the Congress an irreversible process or is it that it is just a temporary blip for the century-old party and will it come round to its winning ways sooner rather than later? Those who have already writ-ten down the obituary of the Congress would tend to agree with the first as-sumption.

to schools in this smart era. She further said that the education department is playing a blame game instead of working in a coordinated effort. The kindergarten section does not think of colleges and primary sections, while the management in col-leges and universities do not play any role in shaping the children in schools, she said.
