Kobbegem, February 5th 2018Environmentally friendly MAN buses for Hansea

Last week (January 31st), the first MAN Lion’s City buses supplied as part of a major order were handed over to owner Hansea in the setting of Antwerp Port House. With a fleet of 805 vehicles and a workforce of 1,130, Hansea is the largest private bus company in Flanders. The firm operates as a lessee for De Lijn and the TEC, the Flemish and Walloon public transport companies, in urban and regional transport, school and staff transport and coach services.

In 2017, Hansea put in an order for no fewer than 72 MAN scheduled service buses, the largest order ever placed since the introduction of the Bus & Coach sales department of MAN Truck & Bus in Belgium, 13 years ago. In addition, MAN also supplies the technology for an approved workshop for MAN and Neoplan buses, including training, components and the installation of ManCats diagnosis equipment.

Seven MAN Lion’s Coach and MAN Lion’s Intercity coaches were also ordered in 2017. The cooperation is clearly set to continue smoothly in 2018 and eight scheduled service buses have already been ordered for De Lijn, along with eight for the TEC.

A stylish vehicle handover

It goes without saying that this first vehicle handover was accompanied by the necessary pomp. In the presence of Managing Director Marc De Baerdemaeker and Rudi Kuchta, Senior Vice President Product & Sales Bus of parent company MAN Truck & Bus AG, a delegation from Hansea was given a fitting welcome. The event took place in the heart of Antwerp harbour, in the Port House. As well as a presentation, which further confirmed the value of the cooperation, a guided tour was organised around the harbour. By bus, of course.

Euro 6c environmental standard

The new Hansea buses are all equipped with a Euro 6c engine, meeting the very latest environmental standard. Euro 6c represents a huge step forwards in reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides(NOx) and dust particles. The new buses are replacing older Euro 3 buses, with a significant positive impact on (urban) transport. The emission from one Euro 3 equals that of no fewer than 25 Euro 6c buses.

“The switch to the Euro 6c standard is a win-win situation. Not only is it in the interest of the environment, but the Euro 6c diesel technology also ensures maximum performance,” declares Hansea CEO Luc Jullet. “What’s more, we firmly believe in alternative drive options, such as hybrid and electric engines, and we are intensively examining the possibilities in this field, including with our partner MAN. Euro 6c is certainly not our ultimate goal, but rather a step towards more environmentally friendly vehicles.”

Focus on aftersales of paramount importance

Apart from the product itself, the aftersales activities obviously play a role that is equally or possibly even more important. “Looking beyond just making sales, MAN proactively supports our thought process. Fully in line with our expectations, for example, MAN provides solutions in the area of aftersales,” according to Mario Provez, CTO at Hansea. “Consistent with the MAN standards, they invest in the continuous training of our technicians. This allows our work locations to get up to the level required for recognition as authorised workplace.”

MAN Lion’s City

The MAN Lion's City is the MAN best seller for urban transport and is available in various models. The 72 Hansea buses include 70 MAN Lion’s City standard buses (12 metres) and two MAN Lion’s City articulated buses (18 metres). Each one has a low floor throughout and a horizontal engine.

MAN can also supply the MAN Lion’s City in a version with a vertical engine. In addition, the MAN Lion’s City is available in different lengths (10.5 – 12 – 13.7 – 14.7 – 18 and 18.75 metres) with various door configurations (from two to five double doors).

As well as the standard Euro 6c diesel, MAN offers CNG engines as an alternative. An electric hybrid version of the 12-metre model is also available. Moreover, models running on hydrogen have already been successfully tested, although this technology is currently not yet available on a large scale.
