For millennia the symbol of the city of Venice and for-merly of its Republic, the winged lion represents the evangelist St. Mark, ergo its name. It appears in the symbols of the Municipality and the Province of Veni-ce, the Veneto Region, and on military naval flags of

the Italian Republic, usually depicted with a halo, a sword and a book. These symbols have a precise significance in Christian ico-nography: the lion symbolizes the power of the Evangelist’s word, the wings spiritual elevation and the halo Christian holiness. It should not be surprising that the lion, symbol of majesty and power, has always fascinated Venetians, a proud and solemn peo-ple…so much so that according to legend real lions could also be found in the gardens of some Venetian palaces. In fact, it is said that in 1316 a lioness had cubs in the courtyard of the Doge’s Pala-ce! And a lion, not in flesh and blood but in gold, is the prestigious award traditionally given every year to the winner at the Venice In-ternational Film Festival.

De gevleugelde leeuw, het eeuwenoude symbool van Venetië en de antieke Venetiaanse Republiek, is een symbolische weergave van de evangelist Marcus, waar-naar de naam verwijst. Doorgaans wordt de leeuw in de symbolen van de gemeente en de provincie van Venetië en de scheepsvlag weergegeven met een aureool, een zwaard en een boek. Deze weergave heeft een exacte betekenis in de christelijke iconografie: de leeuw staat voor de kracht van de woorden van de evangelist, de vleugels verwijzen naar spirituele elevatie en de aureool verwijzen naar christelijke heiligheid.

Men moet er niet verbaasd om zijn dat de leeuw, een synoniem voor grootsheid en kracht sinds heugenis de Venetianen, een trots en fier volk, inspireert... Vol-gens de legende kon men in de tuin van bepaalde palazzo's echte leeuwen vinden. Men vertelt dat in 1316 een leeuwin in het binnenhof van het Palazzo Ducale van welpen beviel!

Elk jaar wordt aan de winnaar van het filmfestival van Venetië een gouden leeuw geschonken.

Venetië, een unieke stad, domineert land en water, kunst en cultuur. De ar-chitectonische bouw van de stad geeft haar dit typische karakter dat over de hele wereld wordt bewonderd. De waterstad Venetië werd gebouwd op 100 eilanden in de moerasachtige lagune. Om de problemen verbonden aan deze bouwomstandigheden te verhelpen, moesten de eerste Veneti-aanse bouwers ingenieuze oplossingen vinden. De stad werd gebouwd met waterafstotende stenen die werden ondersteund door palen van dennenhout en vlotten van larikshout. Een fragiele, instabiele en onzekere installatie voor een stad die in een wankel evenwicht op het water? Het te-gendeel is waar: de palen werden dicht op elkaar in de grond geplaatst en vormen daarom een stevige en veilige fundering. De palen rotten niet, ook al staan ze in de modder omdat er geen zuurstof is waardoor schadelijke bacteriën niet kunnen groeien. De Venetiaanse gebouwen en de wonderli-jke palazzo's steunen niet op de grond, zoals in alle andere steden over de wereld, maar drijven al eeuwenlang...

Undisputed queen of land and sea, Mistress of art and culture, Venice is a unique city in the world. Its archi-tecture, renowned worldwide, also contributes to making it so special. Not by chance defined the “city of water”, Venice was built on a group of over 100

small islands, in the middle of the marshy lagoon. In order to overco-me the difficult construction conditions, the first Venetian builders had to be clever. The entire city was built with waterproof stones,

supported by pinewood piles and larch foundations. A fragile, unsta-ble and unsafe system for a city precariously balanced on the water? The contrary: the closely spaced piles are a solid and firm foundation, and even if submerged by water they do not decay because the oxygen-poor conditions prohibit the proliferation of harmful bacteria. Therefore all the Venetian buildings, including its marvelous palaces, do not rest on land, as in all other cities in the world, rather they have been floating above it, tireless, for centuries …

A nother reason tourists throughout the world dream of visiting Venice is its multitude of museums and chur-ches, witnesses to centuries of history, art and culture. It would be impossible to list all of them, though a few must be mentioned. The Neoclassical rooms of Napole-

onic Wing and the Procuratie Nuove of the Correr Museum, in St. Mark’s Square, hold paintings and maps of Venice from the 15th to the 19th centuries, works and sketches by Canova and artistic finds dedicated to the Doges. The Doge’s Palace, a masterpiece of Gothic art, preser-ves works by Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo, among others. Of all the churches, the first to be mentioned is the Basilica of St. Mark, the ca-thedral of Venice, erected in 828 to guard the fruit of a theft (the relics of St. Mark). Also renowned is Santa Maria dei Miracoli, a masterpiece by Pietro Lombardo and the only Venetian Church that has a sole ar-chitectural style.

Venetië is een geliefde bestemming voor toeristen die afkomstig zijn van landen over de hele wereld, mede dankzij de vele kerken en musea die getuigen van de kunst, cultuur en een eeuwenlange geschiedenis. Het is onmogelijk om alle kerken en musea op te sommen. Toch noemen we een aantal ervan. Het Museo Correr aan het plein Piazza San Marco waar in de neoklassieke omgeving van de napoleontische vleugel en de Procuratie Nuove uitzichten over en kaarten van Venetië uit de 15e tot de 19e eeuw, schilderijen en tekeningen van Canova en kunstwerken gewijd aan de Doge (de bestuurder van Venetië) kunnen worden aanschouwd. Het Pa-lazzo Ducale, een meesterstuk van de gotische kunst waarin onder andere schilderijen van Tiziano (Titiaan), Tintoretto en Tiepolo worden tentoonge-steld. Onder de kerken melden we met name de Basiliek van San Marco, de kathedraal van Venetië die in 828 werd gebouwd om de gestolen re-likwieën van St.Marcus te herbergen. Een andere beroemde kerk is Santa Maria dei Miracoli, een meesterwerk van Pietro Lombardo, de enige Vene-tiaanse kerk met een unieke architectonische stijl.

ArT TreASUreS Venice is not only a city that takes refuge in its past and traditions. Over time it has been able to preserve but also renew, with an enterprising and avant-garde spirit, its role as the cradle of art and culture. Evidence is the Biennale, a cul-tural institution that has been promoting new artistic trends and prestigious events dedicated to contemporary art for over a hundred years, arousing great interest worldwide. Some of the biggest names in international art have passed through here, from Marinetti, the father of Futurism, to Picasso, through Stra-vinsky up to Marina Abramovic and Clint Eastwood. Not by chance names that recall different art forms: in fact, since its birth in 1895, the Venice Biennale has

been a multidisciplinary event, which embraces visual art, cinema, music, theater, architecture, and dance, establishing itself as a universal and visionary voyage through the complex and stratified world of art.

Venetië leeft niet alleen in het verleden en van tradities. De stad heeft haar positie als wieg voor kunst en cultuur met de tijd weten te behouden en heeft bovendien de ondernemingszin en de vooraanstaande rol vernieuwd. Een bewijs daarvan is de Biennale, een culturele instantie die meer dan honderd jaar lang op wereldniveau nieuwe artistieke tendensen en prestigieuze evenementen op het gebied van moderne kunst bevordert. Hier zijn de bero-emdste namen op het gebied van kunst zijn tentoongesteld, van de vader van het futurisme Marinetti tot Picasso, van Stravinskij tot Marina Abramovic en Clint Eastwood. Het is geen toeval dat deze namen verschillende vormen van kunst uitoefenen: sinds de oprichting in 1895 is de Biennale gericht op diverse kunststromingen, waaronder visuele kunst, film, muziek, theater, architectuur en dans. De Biennale presenteert zich als een universele en visi-onaire reis door alle lagen van de kunstwereld.

Created in 1932 from a rib of the Biennale, the Venice International Film Festival is the oldest in the world, always hovering between culture and glamour, art and fan worship. Each year on the island of Lido, in late August and early September, the Palazzo del Cinema, palace of all the film fans in the world, hosts a frenetic and intoxicating succession of premieres, retrospectives, celebrity guests, and fashionable events. On the red carpet, among the photographers’ flashes and fans crowding for hours, old and new glories of international cinema parade by, while inside the screening rooms each year the history of cinema is literally made. Up to the final act, the awarding of the Golden Lion, as prestigious as the Golden Palm of Cannes and the Golden Bear of Berlin, won over the course of the years by names of the calibre of Theodor Dreyer, Wim Wenders, Jean Luc Godard, Mario Monicelli and Michelangelo Antonioni, just to cite some of the most famous.

Het filmfestival ontstond in 1932 uit de Biennale. Dit is het oudste filmfestival ter wereld, en is een combinatie van cultuur en glamour, kunst en verering. Elk jaar aan het einde van augustus en het begin van september wordt in het Palazzo del Cinema in het Lido het festival georganiseerd. In dit 'paleis' dat door alle filmliefhebbers over de hele wereld wordt vereerd, worden films gepresenteerd, worden retrospectieven gehouden en worden beroemde gasten onthaald en mondaine evenementen georganiseerd. Sant’Erasmo Where relaxing is a mustOne of the biggest islands in the Lagoon, Sant’E-rasmo is known by all as “the vegetable garden of Venice”. In fact, thanks to particularly fertile soil, in part sandy and in part clayey, the most esteemed vegetables in the entire Lagoon are grown here. A typical example is the violet ar-tichoke of Sant’Erasmo. The Island also boasts considerable production of excellent wine, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of October at the “Must Festival”, among the most famous in the Lagoon. Sant’Erasmo, however, is not just a wine and food treasure… another feather in the cap of the island is the Massimiliana Tower, da-ting back to 1830-40, where you can enjoy a 360° view that spans from the Treporti coastline to the island of Murano and beyond.

Burano the Island of laceApart from the 16th-century bell tower of San Martino Church, with its original “leaning tower of Pisa” effect, the most striking characteristic of this island is its multi-colored houses. It is said that the houses on Burano are painted so many different colors so that the fishermen could reco-gnize their homes at night. Equally famous is the lace of Burano, which has been imitated around the world. An overview of this family craft can be found at the Lace Museum on the island. Muranothe Island of blown glassThe Island of Murano is famous for the glass pro-duced in its furnaces. The birth of Murano as the glassmaking center dates back to 1295, when the rulers of Venice, worried about the danger of glass furnaces starting fires, preferred to move all the workshops to Murano. From the 9th cen-tury until then Venice had been the most impor-tant center for glassmaking art in Italy, thanks to experience gained from nearby Aquileia, as well as Oriental suggestions from Byzantium. Glassmaking on Murano is still entirely artisan and you can take part in the glassmaking pro-cess.

Visitors eager to discover the secret aspects of the Lagoon must definitely move past the boundaries of Venice to immerge themselves in the fascinating and at times naïf world of the lagoon islands. A must-see is the island of Torcello. With origins even older than Venice, today the island counts just 14 inhabitants. But it has a lot to offer visitors, who passing through the narrow streets dotted by shops and restaurants, can easily reach the “Ponte del Diavolo” (Devil’s Bridge), a rare case of a bridge without railings. Further on is the Locanda Cipriani, which over the years has hosted celebrities from Maria Callas to

Charlie Chaplin, and even Ernest Hemingway, who particularly loved Torcello and wrote his novel “Across the River and into the Trees” the-re. Another gem of the island is the Cathedral, a typical example of Venetian-Byzantine art with the famous mosaic of the Last Judgement.

Much more than a mere beach, Lido is a small island in the Lagoon, which rises exactly in front of Venice and stretches for 12 km. By now renowned as “the golden beach”, it owes its fame to the Belle Époque period, when it became the favorite seaside destination of the most prestigious personalities of the world, whether sovereign or celebrity.

The marvellous coast, the superb Liberty villas and the colourful beach huts contribute to making Lido a picturesque landscape, in the imagery of many artists (Thomas Mann used Lido as the setting for his famous novella “Death in Venice”). The set par excellence for the Film Festival, Lido has even more to offer visitors… from the San Nicolò monastery, the historic heart of the island, to the protected reserve of the Alberoni Dunes, apart from obviously being one of the best bathing establishments in Italy, in fact it obtained the international Blue Flag recognition in 2013.

Een interessante combinatie van tradities en verschillende culturen vormt de basis van de typische gerechten uit de keuken van de Lagune, waarin producten uit de omgeving en exotische elementen - die hier zijn terechtgekomen dankzij de histo-rische band van de afgelopen eeuwen tus-sen de Venetiaanse Republiek en de Oriënt - samenkomen. De geur van de zee mengt zich met producten uit de tuinen van de Lagune en kruiden zoals gember, kaneel, nootmuskaat, kardemom, met een buitengewoon resultaat. Typische eerste gangen uit de Lagune zijn onder an-dere visrisotto met mosselen of zeevruchten, met langoustines of paling, maar ook 'Risi e bisi', een gerecht van rijst en doperwten of 'pasta e fasioi' (pasta met bonen).

Als tweede gang worden lever op zijn Ve-netiaans - gesneden in dunne plakjes en gebakken in olie en boter met peterselie en veel ui -, maar ook smeuïge klipvis en sar-dientjes en saor - een gerecht afkomstig uit Constantinopolis dat is gebaseerd op azijn, ui, rozijnen en pijnboompitten - ge-serveerd. En verder de heerlijke producten die uit deze omgeving afkomstig zijn, zoals de paarse artisjok van S. Erasmo, roodlof uit Chioggia en 'moeca' een normale zee-krab - tegenwoordige voorzien van het Slowfood-kenmerk - die bijzonder mals is als de schaal wordt verwisseld en die op de ondiepe bodem van de Lagune wordt gevangen.

Chioggia, de tweede stad ten tijde van de Dogado della Serenissima (de Republiek van Venetië onder leiding van de doge) bevindt zich in het zuiden van de Lagune. Tegenwoordig is dit één van de grootste visserscentra van Italië. De bezoeker aan deze stad voelt onmiddellijk de aantrekkingskracht van de zee en de veelkleurige vismarkt waar een dertigtal mògnoli (visboeren) elke dag hun vis van een on-geëvenaarde kwaliteit aanbieden. Chioggia wordt gekenmerkt door een van de breedste zandstranden van de Adriatische zee en een oud bos dat het laats-te restant is van maquis (het Nordio bos). De stad is gelegen in een uniek landschap waarin zee en land elkaar ontmoeten. Daar waar de natuur niet reikt, heeft de mens ingegrepen, zoals gezien kan worden in het oude centrum van de stad met een stadsplan in de vorm van een "visgraat". Wegens het unieke landschap en het historische-culturele erfgoed is Chioggia uitgeroepen tot "kunststad".

A curious and tasty combination of tradition and multiculturalism is the main ingredient in the typical dishes of lagoon cuisine, which skilfully blend local products with exotic ele-ments, thanks to the historic tie developed

over the past centuries between the Venetian Republic and the Orient. The scent of the sea mixes with the flavours

from lagoon vegetable gardens and the aromas of spices such as ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom, cre-ating extraordinary combinations. Among the typical lagoon dishes are seafood risotto, prepared with ‘peo-ci’ (mussels) or shellfish, with scampi or ‘al bisato’ (eel), as well as ‘Risi e bisi’, a first course joining rice and peas,

or ‘pasta e fasioi’, a soup with pasta and beans. Main dishes include Venetian-style liver, which is thinly sliced

and cooked in oil and butter, with parsley and a good deal of onion; baccalà mantecato (creamy salted cod), anchovies

or sardines ‘en saor’, a marinade from Constantinople made of vinegar, onion, raisins, and pine nuts. Finally, the excellent local

delicacies, such as the violet artichoke from Sant’Erasmo island, the ‘rose’ (due to its shape) radicchio from Chioggia and ‘moeca’, a soft-shell

crab found on the lagoon floor, today an Italian Slowfood presidium.

Dankzij de organisatie van het park kunt u op verschillende ma-nieren kennis maken met de natuur. Een van deze manieren is vis-sen. U geniet van uitzichten over een ongerept landschap waarin de rijke flora en fauna hun eerbetoon bieden aan de drooglegging en het behoudt van het natuurlijke erfgoed. Voor het vissen moet u in het juiste seizoen (in de zomer) kiezen voor een van de vierent-wintig valleien die dankzij een bijzonder systeem van sluizen zijn gevuld met zoet en zout water. Hier leven een heleboel vissoorten (steuren, palingen, graskarpers, zilverkarpers, snoeken, rivier-baarsen)... Het water wordt omlijst door een variërende vegetatie van riet, wilgen, populieren, vlierbessen en steeneiken. Velden vol kleurige bloemen wisselen zich af met casoni, de typische plaats-elijke woningen. In deze vegetatie en in de lucht erboven leeft een rijke fauna: vossen, egels, roze flamingo's, reigers, steltkluten, zwaluwen... De natuurlijke pracht van het natuurpark kunt u in een boot, op de fiets of te paard ontdekken. De excursies in het park volgen talloze plattelandswegen, dijken en stranden.

Acknowledged as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this city can boast possessing some of the most important architectural treasures in the world, fruit of the genius of the outstanding architect Andrea Palladio. Among all of them, the Palladian Basilica, which permits enjoying

an excellent view of the three squares below it, and the splendid Log-gia del Capitanio. Palladio’s work, however, is best expressed in Palazzo Chiericati, which houses the Art Gallery and Civic Museum, in Palazzo Barbaran da Porto, home to the Palladian Museum, and finally in Palaz-zo Valmarana. At the gates of Vicenza, we find ourselves before one of the most renowned Palladian symbols: Villa Almerico-Capra, called La Rotonda, famous for the particular layout of the central plan that per-fectly merges with the natural frame of the Beric Hills. A worthwhile end to your visit is a stroll on the hill where the Basilica of Monte Berico stan-ds, a destination for pilgrims who worship the Madonna and home to important works of art, such as the painting of the Cena di S. Gregorio Magno by Paolo Veronese.

In the mid 70’s a group of entrepreneurs from the Veneto, after a trip to California where they were inspired by the success of Disneyland, decided to join forces and design something similar on the shores of Garda Lake. And so Gardaland, the first amusement park in Italy, opened on July 19, 1975.Today there are hundreds of amusement parks in our country, mainly smaller family-run ones, though parks that rival the most important European ones are not lacking.

garDaLaND is the biggest Italian amusement park. It is located in Castelnuo-vo del Garda, on the famous lake, outside Verona. The complex hosts “Gardaland Park", "Gardaland Sea-Life", "Gardaland Hotel" and "Gardaland Waterpark". Each year it is visited by around 3 million people.Castelnuovo del Garda – Verona

mirabiLaNDia, an amusement park divided into seven theme areas, is deve-loped around a central lake. Apart from numerous attractions, it hosts the Mira-bilandia Beach water park. It is located in Savio, Ravenna, on the Adriatica state road, and can easily be reached from our resorts.

iDroFoLLie, in Sottomarina Lido, very close to Villaggio Isamar, stands this ex-tremely fun water park with over 200 meters of slides, Jacuzzi tubs, swimming pools, volley courts and games for children.

In het waterpark in het centrum van het vakantiedorp kunnen volwassenen en kinderen zich ontspannen en ver-maken. Grote zwembaden, regenererende bubbelbaden, zonovergoten eilanden, glijbanen en waterspel voor onze kleine gasten die maar niet genoeg kunnen krijgen van het duiken in het water. Het nieuwe zwembad is het pronkstuk van het waterpark. Het bad is 25 meter lang en 12,50 meter breed, is 120 cm diep en biedt volwassenen de mogelijkheid om een paar baantjes te drukken: men voelt zich fit in het water.

The most popular bridle paths are the “Ippoorbitale” path in Rosolina, which starts from the Adige River and leads to the Caleri lagoon, up to reaching the Po di Levante and the Po di Brondolo, the Grand Tour of Albarella, a circuit that crosses the entire island, and the Due Popillie that goes through the municipalities of Taglio di Po, Ariano nel Polesi-ne and Corbola. The advantage of touring these areas on horseback is that the rider has a privileged view, given the height of the riverbanks and the further height of the horse. In addition, horses can freely tran-sit in these areas where hundreds of species live together. Villaggio Barricata opens its doors to the ado-red four-legged friends, who, often when we leave for vacation, are forced to stay at home because not many hotels are willing to wel-come them and beaches accessible to dogs

are a rarity. We, on the contrary, are thrilled to have them, together with their owners, because we know how difficult it is to be separated from Fido, above all for our children, and instead how much joy having them by your side in a ‘dog- friendly’ environment can bring. Therefore we have dedicated some areas of the resort to people who come with their pets: cottages, bungalows and special lots, green areas where you can walk them, the beach where they can freely run and swim in the sea. Furthermo-re, in order to best take care of them also on vacation, near-by you can find specialized pet stores, a vet and everything you need to keep them healthy and vivacious, even far from home.

I t is the largest lagoon in the Delta, located in the southern part, in the mu-nicipality of Porto Tolle, very close to Villaggio

Barricata. Connected to the sea, the Scardovari inlet has a medium-low depth and navi-gable canals. This destination is renowned for fishing, harve-

sting clams and for the “peo-ciare”, that is mussel farms. It hosts an exceptionally rich ar-ray of fauna, above all birds. In its oases, which boast various typologies of vegetation (reed thickets, marshes, rice fields, and medicinal herbs…) you can come across birds of prey, sea-gulls, terns, passerines, ibises,

common cranes, and ducks. Easily visited by boat, you can admire it in its entirety only by bicycle along the panora-mic riverbank road that coasts the whole inlet, equipped with binoculars you can watch the birds up close. From November to February the scenery chan-ges and the lagoon is transfor-

med into the ideal habitat for birds belonging to Nordic spe-cies. The lagoon is surrounded by a row of “pile dwellings” (houses for fishermen, the main occupation in the area) with co-lorful boats tied to the support piles, giving a fairy-tale touch to the landscape.

An extensive itinerary that permits visiting the three most typical villages in the Delta: Ca'Venier, Pila and Boccasette. Three small towns made up of a little church and some rows of low houses, isolated from everything. Pila is the furthest point by land on the Po Delta. From its dock you can reach, only by boat, the lighthou-se of Pila and the semi-submerged ruins of the blockhouse.

The Po Delta Park has ecological characteristics that make it unique. Without a doubt the natural element it is most associated with is water. With an overall surface area of over 52,000 hectares, considered among the richest in biodiversity, it conserves the

largest expansion of protected wetlands in Italy. It is the unsta-ble relationship between water and land, and their constant preca-rious balance, that have determined such a changeable landscape in the Po Delta, where woods, pinewoods and forests alternate with fresh water and salt water wet lands. The biodiversity in the Del-ta territory is extraordinary, in particular for the presence of over 280 bird species.

The best way to discover this world is by navigating along its rivers and lagoons. On the river routes you can admire the grey herons, black-crowned night herons and egrets; crossing the Scardovari Inlet you get an up-close view of the typical “cavane” (fishing huts) of the fishermen, or circumnavigate islands that are still intact un-til reaching the delta of the Po di Goro and its beautiful lighthouse.

A boat trip down the Great River to see the sun set where the Po meets the sea. An experience that cannot be missed.

One of the most fascinating excursions is offered by the Barricata Diving Center: in the late afternoon a platoon boat leaves the wharf of the Barricata beach with snorkeling gear.

During the boat trip you can admire the Scardovari inlet, which was formed by the flood in Polesine in 1951, immediately after you go into the natural canals to reach the second branch of the Delta: the Po di Goro. Here you can see the old lighthouse of Goro, today an observation point for ornithologists, and testimony of the place where the great river flowed into the sea in the last century. The excursion continues and the boat goes around the island Mezzanino until reaching the new lighthouse of Goro, built in 1950. The buil-ding is located at the tip of the scannone di Goro, made famous by its nickname “Island of Love”. Here you take a break to dive into the clean and transparent water, then a tasty cocktail with fresh clams and excellent Prosecco you can savor while watching the sun set and meet the sea. Finally, a walk along the beach to collect seashells to take home as souvenirs. And if you are truly lucky you can come across a loggerhead sea turtle. During the trip back you can enjoy the sun setting into the sea.

Humans have always interacted with nature, attempting to mediate that balance that enables a reciprocally advan-tageous coexistence. The Regional Land Reclamation Mu-seum in Ca’ Vendramin, located in the municipality of Taglio del Po, is an example of this pledge between humans and

water, which permitted the land reclamation of the Delta by the Civil Corps of Engineers in Rovigo between 1886 and 1900. Subsequently, in three ye-ars the plant to remove the land reclamation water was built in Ca’ Vendra-min, and it was kept running until 1969. The Museum is therefore the ideal starting point for understanding the value of a truly particular territory. The Museum exhibits a large water-scooping machine (a particular pump suited for removing large quantities of water, above all in land reclamation works or after flooding) and has various rooms dedicated to boilers, pumps and the workshop. You walk into the past to rediscover, in the machines displayed, the great intelligence of their inventors, and you come to understand how difficult it was for the people who worked on the land reclamation with the means of the times. Moreover, looking at the walls and ceilings, you can see the sophistication of the builders, who used friezes as decorative elements to give warmth to the rooms. The travel through time then continues with the exhibition of a myriad of finds from farm life, its environments and tools.

Was built in the 1500’s, commissioned by the last Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II, in honor of his third wife, Margherita Gon-zaga. The last of the Estense "delights", this castle stands out for its austere yet

elegant look. At the center of an immense game reserve, the Castle used to be surrounded by a 12-km-long wall, though there are no remnants of it today. Instead, the service struc-tures built in a semi-circle around the Castle remain and have been transformed into stores and restaurants. A trip to the Gran Bosco della Mesola is worth taking. Stretching over more than 1,000 hectares, this natural reserve is populated by a rich vegetation dominated by holm oaks, typical of Ma-quis shrubland. It is also inhabited by only 120 of the rare and indigenous Mesola red deer.

In de zestiende eeuw liet de laatste hertog van Ferrara, Alfonso II, het kasteel Castello Estense della Mesola bouwen ter ere van zijn derde echtgenote, Margherita Gonzaga. Nicknamed "little Venice ", is the most original and charming historic center in the Po Delta. It dates back to the dawn of the Middle Ages, was founded on thirteen islets and based its urban and economic development solely on the water. Fishing, lagoon fish breeding and salt pro-duction were the sources of its prosperity and also of its set-backs, due to conflicts arising from rivalry with Venice. Today the city stands out for its intact and unique architecture, its ca-nals, palaces, and monumental bridges.The historic center preserves considerable testimony to the past: churches and monuments suspended among bridges that dominate the canals, first among them the 17th-century Trep-ponti, the old gate to the city.

Comacchio, ook klein Venetië genoemd, is het meest originele en fascine-rende historische centrum in de delta van de Po. The history of the Abbey, which is found on the Romea Road in the stretch between the Po di Goro and the Po di Volano, dates back over one thousand years. The first documents that attest its existence are dated 874 A.D. Many centuries passed, bearing witness to the deve-

lopment of this oasis of silence ad prayer, which at the end of the 13th century had 21 dominions in the territories of Ravenna, Comac-chio, Adria, and central-northern Italy. The period of maximum and merited splendor was during the abbacy of San Guido, at the time

Guido degli Strambiati, monk at Pomposa from 998 and abbot until his death in 1046. In that period the great Library was built, which preserves a large quantity of secular works from the classic world, to the point that a priest in 1096 wrote that not even Rome "can com-pete with Pomposa, fortunate for the abundance of blessed books". Here Guido Monaco invented the musical notes. Unfortunately, over the centuries the abbey experienced a slow yet constant decay, due to poor management, until the climax in 1671, when the few monks left abandoned the monastery.

Dit is een stadje, de geboorteplaats van Giacomo Matteotti, dat werd gesticht aan een tak van de Po die tegenwoordig is verdwenen. Must-sees are the Church of San Francesco, where church music concerts, exhibits and meetings are held, and the Church of SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo, decorated with frescoes, precious wooden inlay and Venetian sculptures.

ravenna is the second largest Italian city in terms of terri-tory. It comprises nine beaches along the Adriatic coast, and was the capital of Italy three times during the Roman empire of the West from 400 to 750 A.D. An immense ar-cheological heritage remains from its glorious past, which

makes the city unique in the world, so much so that its territory hosts 8 World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. This archeological wealth is contained in the conservation and restoration of the 5th and 4th century mosaics, the inheritance of Byzantine glory, which is unrivalled by any other Ita-lian or foreign city. Walking through the city center you can purchase original modern mosaics or faithful reproductions of the ancient ones. The city is full of handicraft shops, which also promote artistic activities, thanks to the experience gained through contact with and preservation of the small vitreous weaves. Must-sees are the Basilica of San Vitale, da-ting back to the 6th century, with its two large mosaics depicting the em-peror Justinian and his wife Theodora; the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, from the 5th century, with its blue mosaic vault; the famous Baptisteri-es; the archiepiscopal chapel where the mosaics reproduce the fauna of the pine forests outside Ravenna. Two basilicas are dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, patron saint of the city: one in the city center, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, with the marvellous theory of the Virgins and Martyrs, and just a few kilometers away, Sant'Apollinare in Classe, with its magnificent apse half-dome; also worth visiting is the Mausoleum of Theodoric, built by the king of the Ostrogoths in 520 A.D. Finally, a visit to the Dantesque area, which includes the Church of Saint Francis and the tomb of Dante Alighieri, the great poet.
