5. Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching is influenced by experiences as a student, veterinary student, veterinary practitioner, clinical resident and graduate student. A respect for the individual learner and desire to improve the quality of human and animal health motivate me to teach to the best of my ability. My opportunities to educate and influence students have been tremendously diverse. I have taught undergraduate students in the college of agriculture via classroom lectures and labs, second-year veterinary students via classroom lectures and problem solving sessions, third-year veterinary students via classroom lectures, fourth-year veterinary students via guided discussions and clinical rotations, and graduate students via mentorship in field or laboratory research. While my teaching philosophy is unchanging throughout diverse teaching opportunities, the application of my philosophy varies greatly with educational maturity of the student, instructional setting and the goals of each educational event. Three core beliefs characterize my teaching philosophy: (1) My teaching content is of the highest quality when I am actively researching (experimentally or via current literature) and clinically applying the subject matter. (2) Students learn best when they understand the relevance of concepts and information being taught. (3) Learning can be maximized by carefully orchestrating the presentation of prioritized material in a variety of formats (written, verbal and visual) because individuals within most groups will vary in their capacity to rapidly assimilate material presented in various ways. I attempt to continually investigate and apply the subject matters that I teach, as this causes me to select, filter and organize optimal educational content and present material with the greatest enthusiasm. I believe that students’ pragmatic needs to understand and apply concepts and information to be presented should be made evident at the outset of any educational event. Then, to maximize learning in a classroom lecture, I provide organized, concise and well-written notes that are complemented by a PowerPoint presentation with images, diagrams and tables. Planned verbal and nonverbal communication is used to explain, illustrate and emphasize the prepared material. In undergraduate laboratories, my teaching is optimized when students have previously studied well-written protocols, receive appropriate verbal instruction and participate in organized experiences that effectively demonstrate the relevant concepts to be learned. During problem solving sessions, verbal comments are provided to encourage students, visual images of case material are presented, and student-selected references are scrutinized to maximize student-directed learning. During guided discussions, topics are assigned for prior investigation, available case material is used for visual emphasis, initial questions are asked and student responses are affirmed, redirected, or corrected with humility to maximize learning. During rotations in the teaching hospital, learning is maximized when I carefully lead students in maintaining medical records, communicating with clients, obtaining case histories, performing physical exams, selecting diagnostic assays, interpreting diagnostic results, choosing treatment options, and evaluating therapeutic responses while ensuring the provision of exemplary medical care. Graduate students learn best by first reading, hearing, and experiencing the strategies, philosophy, and ethics of science and then applying the techniques needed to perform science within the initial context of close mentorship by advisors. The educational maturity of students greatly influences my application of teaching philosophy. Undergraduate lectures are directed by the teacher and focused on the class as a group. Graduate education is student-directed and focused on the individual learner. Graduate students in the research laboratory are strongly encouraged to develop and exercise independence in solving problems throughout the educational process while undergraduates in the teaching laboratory are more carefully guided by the instructor. In essence, I strive to teach recently investigated, appropriately prioritized, relevant concepts and information by maximizing organization and clarity of written, verbal and visual communication.

7. Synopsis of Prior Research

The focus of the candidate’s research has been to clearly discern the potential for transmission of viruses by natural and assisted reproduction and to develop and validate control strategies of minimal constraint that would prevent transmission of pathogens. This research has primarily focused on bovine reproduction and pathogens of ruminants. Previous research has significantly impacted the health of cattle and the economic sustainability of the cattle industry. This research has focused on (a) developing and validating new diagnostic tests to detect virus associated with semen and embryos, (b) assessing the epidemiologic risk of disease transmission associated with common techniques to assist reproduction, (c) discovering and evaluating the in vitro efficacy and safety of novel antiviral agents, (d) describing characteristics of a unique method of viral persistence within breeding bulls, and (e) evaluating the potential of commercially available vaccines to cause or prevent prolonged infections and disease. This previous work has developed and established the candidate’s expertise in pathogens affecting bovine reproduction.

C. EXTENSION/OUTREACH 1. Commentary

The candidate served 2.5 months each year as a teaching clinician in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital until the summer of 2008. The candidate developed considerable expertise in the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and control of reproductive pathogens of cattle. This expertise enables him to advise producers, veterinary clinicians, and industry in methodologies to diagnose and effectively control specific pathogens.
