IntroductionHammer and Forge is a sourcebookon dwarves. The goal is to giveadditional options for players usingdwarven warbands. We are planningsimilar books for all the fantasy racesfound on Norindaal, the AdvancedSong of Blades and Heroes world. Thisbook contains useful material evenfor those not using dwarves. Theprofiles in this book are based on thelooks and equipment of miniaturesfrom many manufacturers in avariety of scales, including our 28mmfigures (see www.songofblades.com)

Black PowderMany dwarves use firearms,grenades, or cannons and display atechnological level similar to that ofthe late Renaissance. As dwarves arecreatures of earth, metals, andminerals, it is fitting for them to bethe masters of those weapons.Accordingly, this book includes rulesfor firearms and explosives. If youfeel that black-powder weapons do

not belong to fantasy, you are notforced to use them. As long as no onedoes, play balance is not affected. Inour game world, gunpowder is a rarealchemical compound, too expensiveto be mass-produced.

On the An Mòr continent, blackpowder is produced only byalchemists in Dorantia. TheDorantian empire has a smallforce of arquebusiers, whichhas many dwarves in its ranks.Some of them are expatriatedwarves. You can assume thatfirearm-equipped dwarves inyour games come from thisforce.

Big GunsCannons are meant for larger games(800+ points). Allowing them in smallgames may create unbalancedbattles.

Background: KestarKell, the Half Ring

East of the Sun-Kissed Vale and theEverflowing River (described in Fightin’Fungi) lies a chain of mountains calledKestar Kell, which in D’harris (thedwarven language) means “the HalfRing”. This is an area of temperateclimate with forests of evergreen treesand snow-capped peaks. To the East ofthe mountains is an area of dry steppes,perpetually swept by winds andinhabited by aggressive, nomadichobgoblin tribes.

Each mountain contains a differentcommunity of dwarves. Some caves arealso inhabited by goblins, as well as theoccasional antediluvian lizardman,dragon, or wyvern. In addition to fightingagainst these creatures, the clannish,stern nature of dwarves creates a lot ofanimosity between communities. The

most common foe of a dwarf is anotherdwarf, or an undead dwarf!

In Kestar Kell, the dwarves exist in twomajor cultural groups: the Miners andthe Pelters. In addition, there are somebreakaway groups or sects, such as theDragonslayers, Possessed, and Thrallsof the Lich King. Other parts ofNorindaal have dwarves as well, butonly those clans in Kestar Kell aredescribed in this book.

The Story of the MinersThe Miners (also called Grimstones)are the largest group. Ruled by theirnear-immortal King Thumas Ven,Miners practice gem magic and havethe most powerful Runecasters.

Thumas Ven, the son of a famousdragonslayer, became king when, in adream, he saw the location of theEverBounty — an inexhaustiblemother lode of gold, silver, andgemstones, deep in the bowels of theKestar Kell mountains. Instead ofclaiming the treasure as his own, hechose to share its wealth with all theclan — unusual behavior for a dwarf.In truth, the riches of the EverBountywere simply too many for a singledwarf to mine and carry home, soThumas thought of using his discoveryto gain political power. His choicemade him a hero of the masses. Hewas the first King to be elected throughpublic acclamation instead ofpatrilineage.

But Thumas’ dream of gold was notinspired by Father Hulla and MotherFari, the dwarven gods of earth and
