Do you know how todevelop and producea unique game?

Creative The games industry is very different from the ICT industry.Creativity is a critical aspect. You need to be visually oriented and you need to have good drawing andcomputer skills. What’s also important, is a sense of aesthetics and spatial aptitude.

CompetitiveGame development is a highlycompetitive field. You have to be good at managing your time and followinginstructions to measure up to the academic demands of theprogramme.

2

Ambitious, practical, highly skilled

PassionThe most important thing is probably that you have to be enthusiastic, passionate even, about game development andprogramming. There is no placefor a 9 to 5 mindset, neither inyour studies, nor in your futurecareer. Working long hours is therule rather than the exception.

What determines the success of a new game? Why do people of all agesfind themselves glued to their computer screens for hours on end, trying to get the hang of a game? Are the graphics so compelling, is the storyline so captivating or is it the audio quality that mesmerises the user? As a game programmer or visual artist, you will become an expert in developing high-quality games, using creative design concepts and graphicdesign skills and technology.

educational visionAndrew Paquette, lecturer in 3D Visual Art

Andrew Paquette has been working professionally as an artist since1986 and in the game industry since 1994. He worked in the UnitedStates for three of the biggest game developers: THQ, Sony and Universal Studios. He began his career as an editorial illustrator forTime Magazine. Later he worked as an artist on comics such as Hell-raiser and Daredevil. Additionally, he worked as an art director inthe video games business on games including Scooby-Doo and Unreal.Furthermore, he contributed special effects work for the movies ‘Space Jam’ and ‘Spider-Man’.

‘I have a great deal of work experience in video games and themovie industry and I discovered that it was quite difficult to findyoung talent. Applicants often did not have the appropriate skillsto develop and design 3D computer games. When I heard about thiscourse in the Netherlands, it seemed like a great challenge to me tolift the students’ skills to a higher level. What I enjoy enormously, is that the first-year students have already learned so much. They really have a great passion for this field.‘
