Aan de rand van Delft staat al meer dan 140 jaar een beeldbepalend fabriekscomplex. Lange tijd heette dat de Nederlandsche Gist- en Spiritusfabriek, later Gist-brocades en sinds 1998 DSM. Innovatie in biotechnologie is altijd het sleutelwoord geweest en is dat nog. Hier is penicilline ontwikkeld, zijn giststammen ontdekt en worden nieuwe smaakstoffen uit natuurlijke gist gemaakt. Vandaag de dag is DSM in Delft een centrum voor onderzoek en biotechnologische productie van voedingsingrediënten, grondstoffen, antibiotica en enzymen.Biotechnologie heeft de toekomst. Het is een duurzame manier van omgaan met grondstoffen en reststoffen. Door gebruik te maken van micro-organismen en hernieuwbare grondstoffen kunnen nieuwe productieprocessen en producten worden ontwikkeld. De locatie van DSM Delft wordt in hoog tempo ontwikkeld tot een biotechnologiepark dat open is voor andere bedrijven en onderzoeks- instellingen op het gebied van biotechnologie. DSM Delft heeft daar alle benodigde vergunningen voor. Het biotechnologiepark wordt in samenwerking met de Technische Universiteit Delft ontwikkeld onder de naam Biotech Campus Delft.

Biotechnologie iS De BaSiSDe locatie in Delft is het biotechnologiecentrum van DSM en een interessante werkgever voor biotechnologietalent van over de hele wereld. Op de locatie van DSM in Delft werken zo’n 1200 mensen, waarvan bijna de helft in Research & Development. Zij ontwikkelen en verbeteren producten en productieprocessen op basis van biotechnologie. De andere helft van de 1200 werken in productie, management, verkoop of ondersteunende diensten.

gisten, bacteriën en schimmelsHet toepassen van micro-organismen (schimmels, gisten en bacteriën) voor producten en in productieprocessen, dat is biotechnologie. Bij DSM in Delft worden schimmels gebruikt voor de productie van antibiotica, en doen we onder meer onderzoek om voedingsingrediënten te maken uit gistextracten. Met micro-organismen kunnen we ook enzymen produceren die op natuurlijke wijze chemische processen kunnen uitvoeren, wat voordelen heeft voor het milieu. Dit biotechnologisch onderzoek wordt in de laboratoria van DSM in Delft uitgevoerd in samenwerking met andere DSM-locaties over de hele wereld.

onderzoeken en toepassenDe onderzoekers werken ook aan processen om natuurlijke restproducten zoals landbouwafval om te zetten naar grondstoffen voor farmaceutische en chemische producten, zoals bijvoorbeeld bioplastics. Die worden nu nog vaak uit bijvoorbeeld aardolie gemaakt. Aangezien veel van deze processen nog heel nieuw zijn, worden ze ontwikkeld in de laboratoria van DSM en daarna getest in de Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF). BPF is een zelfstandig bedrijf op de DSM-locatie waar DSM en externe bedrijven kunnen testen of de nieuwe processen ook op grotere schaal werken. Dat testen is nodig voordat grootschalige productie kan plaatsvinden in fabrieken.

Hoe dat werkt, onderzoeken we bij DSM met behulp van de nieuwste apparatuur en technieken. Dat maakt Research & Development tot een buitengewoon boeiende bezigheid!”

Einte-Karst Dijk, productiemanager:“Met onze unieke biotechnologische processen kunnen we op milieuvriendelijke wijze hoogwaardige voedingsmiddelen en medicijnen maken. De gebruikte schimmels, gisten en enzymen zijn zeer selectief, hierdoor is het gebruik van energie en chemicaliën laag. Onze professionele teams zoeken altijd naar verbeteringen en nóg slimmere manieren om met elkaar samen te werken. Deze combinatie maakt ons een grote speler in de wereldwijde markt voor antibiotica en voedingsingrediënten.”


hernieuwbare grondstoffenDSM zoekt naar mogelijkheden om hernieuwbare grondstoffen te gebruiken, in plaats van fossiele grondstoffen. We doen dat omdat hernieuwbare grondstoffen duurzamer zijn, minder energie kosten en natuurlijker zijn dan (traditionele) chemische stoffen en processen. Een voorbeeld is de productie van bio-ethanol. Uit landbouwresten en houtsnippers worden nuttige suikers gehaald. Hoe hiermee de bouwstenen voor bio-ethanol worden gemaakt, wordt onderzocht bij DSM en de BPF. Hernieuwbare grondstoffen worden in de natuur steeds opnieuw gemaakt. Zo sluit de natuurlijke kringloop zich, en gaan we zuiniger om met onze hulpbronnen.

innovatie in onderzoek en omgevingHet DSM Biotechnology Center is gehuisvest in een ultramodern gebouw met laboratoria en kantoorplekken voor onze onderzoekers. Door het transparante ontwerp van het gebouw worden mensen aangemoedigd om veel met elkaar samen te werken. Immers, door ideeën en informatie uit te wisselen ontstaat innovatie.

grootSchalige proDuctieDe voedingsmiddelenindustrie en geneesmiddelenindustrie zijn twee grote afnemers van producten van DSM. We maken in Delft geen eindproducten die je in de supermarkt of bij de apotheek vindt, maar ingrediënten welke door de voedingsmiddelen- en geneesmiddelenproducenten verder worden verwerkt en op de markt gebracht. Bij DSM in Delft produceren we gist en gistextracten. Deze worden gebruikt in bijvoorbeeld soepen en sauzen. Ze geven een hartige smaak aan producten en kunnen worden gebruikt als alternatief voor zout. In onze laboratoria worden allerlei producten ontwikkeld voor voeding, onder meer met behulp van enzymen. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn producten die meer sap uit fruit halen, kaas en yoghurt de gewenste smaak geven of lactosevrije zuivel mogelijk


maken. De kwaliteit van brood kan worden verbeterd en gebak kan langer houdbaar worden gemaakt. Onze enzymen worden ook gebruikt voor het produceren van glutenvrij bier of het besparen van energie tijdens de productie van bier en wijn.

een schimmel die antibiotica maaktEen andere belangrijke activiteit is de antibioticaproductie. De DSM Sinochem Pharmaceuticals antibioticafabriek op het terrein is een van de grootste ter wereld. Daar wordt een schimmel gekweekt, die een essentiële bouwstof produceert voor antibiotica. In het productieproces maken we gebruik van enzymen in plaats van chemicaliën. De enzymen die we produceren, maken het productieproces duurzaam en milieuvriendelijk. Daardoor kan deze fabriek concurreren op de wereldmarkt voor antibiotica. In de fabriek werken zelfsturende teams. Een professioneel team van operators neemt verantwoordelijkheid voor de productievoortgang en verbeteringen in de fabrieken. Dat geeft veel motivatie en trots op het werk.

DuurzaaMheiD, hoog op De agenDaDSM besteedt veel aandacht aan duurzaamheid. Dat doen we omdat we vinden dat we goed moeten zorgen voor huidige en toekomstige generaties . Door de ontwikkeling van duurzame producten en processen draagt DSM bij aan het voorkomen en oplossen van mondiale problemen, zoals voedsel- en energievoorziening en het verminderen van afvalstromen. Bij DSM in Delft dragen vele initiatieven er toe bij om de locatie duurzamer te maken. Bijvoorbeeld de gistextractendroger, waar de geproduceerde gist wordt gedroogd en klaargemaakt voor verdere verwerking. Door dit direct naast de productie te doen, wordt de CO2 uitstoot veel lager. We zuiveren al het water dat op de locatie gebruikt wordt in een eigen biologische afvalwaterzuivering. Met behulp van micro-organismen wordt de vuillast in het water met ca. 95% gereduceerd. Het biogas dat hierbij vrijkomt, wordt gebruikt om een deel van de stoom en stroom te maken die voor de gistproductie nodig zijn. Het resterende slib is van hoogwaardige kwaliteit en wordt als meststof gebruikt in de landbouw.

ook in de eigen werkomgevingHet nieuwe laboratorium van DSM Biotechnology Center heeft het BREEAM ‘very good’ keurmerk voor duurzaamheid en milieuvriendelijkheid gekregen. Daarvoor is aan hoge eisen voldaan. Zo is de verlichting binnen én buiten het gebouw uiterst efficiënt. Het energieverbruik is daardoor meer dan 10% lager dan de regelgeving vereist. In het gebouw zijn duurzame materialen toegepast. Het binnenklimaat is gezond en er komt veel licht binnen door de glazen gevels en de grote lichtkoepel op het dak. Door het toepassen van ‘paperless office’ daalt het papierverbruik tot een minimum.

Koeling en afvalstromenWe hebben water nodig voor onze productieprocessen, bijvoorbeeld om te koelen. Daarvoor gebruiken we grondwater dat op de locatie wordt opgepompt. Er komen geen producten of afval in het koelwater. Het water blijft dus schoon. Na gebruik pompen we het af naar de Noordzee. Hiermee helpen we ook de gemeente Delft om het grondwaterniveau in de stad op peil te houden. DSM heeft steeds minder grondwater nodig omdat er koeltorens zijn gebouwd voor efficiënte koeling. DSM in Delft heeft uiteraard ook afval, variërend van koffiebekers tot productie- resten. Meer dan 99% van het afval wordt hergebruikt.

VeiligheiD Voor alleSVerantwoord ondernemerschap is een belangrijk aspect van duurzaamheid. Daarom besteden we veel aandacht aan veiligheid. Om zo veilig mogelijk te werken, hebben we uitvoerige procedures en heldere regels. Het is nodig dat iedereen zich daaraan houdt. Daar spreken we elkaar, en ook samenwerkingspartners en bezoekers, op aan.

In het geval van een incident is de veiligheid van omwonenden, medewerkers en gasten het eerste waar onze aandacht naar uitgaat. Daarna naar het milieu en dan

pas naar de continuïteit van onze productieprocessen. Om een incident zo snel en effectief mogelijk te bestrijden wordt samengewerkt met de Veiligheidsregio.

overlast bestrijdenDe productieprocessen en het onderhoud kunnen overlast veroorzaken voor de omwonenden. DSM Delft heeft vergunningen voor bepaalde hoeveelheden geluid en geur, en is aangewezen als een Hoge Milieucategorie bedrijventerrein. We proberen hinder naar de omgeving zoveel mogelijk te voorkomen en proactief te bestrijden. Is er toch overlast, dan kan het gratis milieuklachtennummer worden gebeld en wordt direct actie ondernomen om de oorzaak te onderzoeken en passende maatregelen te nemen.

MiDDen in De SaMenleVingDSM Delft staat dichtbij het centrum van Delft. Veel mensen uit Delft en omgeving hebben bij DSM of het voormalige Gist-Brocades gewerkt, of hebben belangstelling voor wat we op het terrein doen. Jaarlijks organiseren we een avond voor omwonenden en belangstellenden, waarbij bezoekers worden rondgeleid en we uitleg geven over onze productieprocessen en plannen. Twee keer per jaar wordt het blad DSM Delft Nieuws breed verspreid.De gepensioneerden van DSM en Gist-Brocades worden ook elk jaar ontvangen. In samenwerking met scholen en universiteiten geven we gastcolleges voor studenten en scholieren die interesse hebben in chemie en biotechnologie. Zij zijn wellicht onze toekomstige collega’s!

For more than 140 years, an iconic factory complex has been standing on the outskirts of Delft. For a long time it was known as the Nederlandsche Gist- en Spiritusfabriek [Dutch Yeast and Spirits Factory], later Gist-Brocades and, since 1998, DSM. Innovation in biotechnology was always the keyword and today that is still the case. This is the place where penicillin was developed, yeast strains were discovered and new flavorings were made from natural yeast. Nowadays, DSM Delft is a center for research and the biotechnological production of food ingredients, raw materials, antibiotics and enzymes. Biotechnology is the future. It is a sustainable way of dealing with raw materials and residues. Using microorganisms and renewable raw materials makes it possible to develop new production processes and products. The DSM Delft site is rapidly being developed into a biotechnology park that is open to other companies and research institutions active in the field of biotechnology. DSM Delft has all the required permits. The biotechnology park is being developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft under the name Biotech Campus Delft.

BiotechnologY iS the BaSiSAs DSM’s biotechnology center, the Delft site is an interesting employer for biotechnology talent from all over the world. Nearly 1200 people work at the DSM Delft site, about half of whom are in Research & Development. They develop and improve products and production processes, using biotechnology as a basis. The remainder of the 1200 employees work in production, management, sales or support services.

Yeasts, bacteria and fungiUsing microorganisms (fungi, yeasts and bacteria) for products and in production processes is what biotechnology is all about. DSM’s work in Delft includes using fungi in the production of antibiotics and conducting research into using yeast extracts to make food ingredients. With microorganisms, we can also produce enzymes which are able to carry out chemical processes naturally, which benefits the environment. This biotechnological research is conducted in DSM Delft’s laboratories in conjunction with other DSM sites worldwide.

research and applicationThe researchers are also working on processes for converting natural residual products such as agricultural waste into raw materials for pharmaceutical and chemical products, such as bioplastics. At present, plastics are still often made from petroleum. Since many of these processes are still very new, they are developed in the DSM laboratories and then tested in the Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF), an independent company on the DSM site where DSM and external companies can test whether the new processes are also effective on a larger scale. This testing is necessary before large-scale production can take place in factories.

At DSM, we use the latest apparatus and techniques to research how that works, making Research & Development an extremely fascinating occupation!”

The fungi, yeasts and enzymes we use are highly selective, thus reducing energy and chemicals consumption. Our professional teams are always looking to make improvements and develop even smarter ways of cooperating with one another. This combination makes us a major player in the global market for antibiotics and food ingredients.”

renewable raw materialsDSM is looking for opportunities to use renewable raw materials instead of fossil raw materials. We are doing this because renewables are more sustainable, require less energy and are more natural than (traditional) chemical substances and processes. One example is the production of bio-ethanol. Useful sugars are obtained from agricultural residues and wood chips. DSM and the BPF are carrying out research into how these can create the building blocks for bio-ethanol. Nature is constantly recreating renewable raw materials. In this way the natural cycle is closed and we are using our natural resources more economically.

innovation in research and environmentThe DSM Biotechnology Center is housed in a state-of-the-art building with laboratories and office space for our researchers. People are motivated to cooperate more readily with one another due to the building’s transparent design. Indeed, innovation takes place by exchanging ideas and information.

large-Scale proDuctionThe food industry and the pharmaceutical industry are two major consumers of DSM’s products. In Delft, we do not make any end products that you will find in the supermarket or at the pharmacy, but we do make ingredients which are further processed and marketed by food and pharmaceutical manufacturers.At DSM Delft we produce yeast and yeast extracts, which are used to make soups and sauces, for example. They give products a savory flavor and can be used as an alternative to salt. Our laboratories develop all kinds of products for food, including by using enzymes. Examples include products that extract more juice from fruit, give cheese and yoghurt the desired taste or make it possible to obtain lactose-free dairy products. The quality of bread can be improved and pastry given a longer shelf life.

Our enzymes are also used to produce gluten-free beer or save energy when producing beer and wine.

a fungus that makes antibioticsAnother important activity is the production of antibiotics. The DSM Sinochem Pharmaceuticals antibiotics factory on the site is one of the largest in the world. At this factory, a fungus is cultivated which produces an essential building block for antibiotics. We use enzymes instead of chemicals in the production process. The enzymes which we produce make the production process sustainable and environmentally friendly. As a result, this factory can compete in the global market for antibiotics. Self-managed teams work in these factories. A professional team of operators is responsible for the progress of production and for improvements to the factories. This leads to a high level of motivation and pride in the work.

SuStainaBilitY, high on the agenDaDSM pays a great deal of attention to sustainability. This is because we think that we should take good care of present and future generations. By developing sustainable products and processes, DSM is helping to prevent and solve global problems, such as providing food and energy and reducing waste flows. At DSM in Delft there are many initiatives which help make the site more sustainable, for example the yeast-extract drying facility where the yeast produced is dried and prepared for further processing. By doing this directly alongside production, CO2 emission is reduced. We purify all the water that is used on the site in our own biologic waste-water treatment facility. Using microorganisms, the waste load in the water is reduced by approximately 95%. The biogas that is released is used to produce some of the steam and electricity needed for yeast production. The remaining sludge is of a high quality and is used as fertilizer in the agricultural industry.

even in our own work environmentDSM Biotechnology Center’s new laboratory has been awarded the BREEAM ‘very good’ label for sustainability and eco-friendliness. The requirements it had to meet were high. The lighting inside and outside the building, for example, is extremely efficient, thus making energy consumption more than 10% lower than the regulations require. Sustainable materials are used in the building. There is a healthy indoor environment and glass façades and the large skylight on the roof let in a lot of light. By creating a paperless office, paper consumption is kept to a minimum.

cooling and waste flowsWe need water for our production processes, for example for cooling. For this, we use groundwater which is pumped up on site. No waste or products are discharged into the cooling water, so it remains clean. After it has been used, we pump it into the North Sea, thus also helping the municipality of Delft to maintain the town’s groundwater level. DSM’s need for groundwater is constantly decreasing because cooling towers have been built to provide efficient cooling. DSM also produces waste, of course, varying from coffee cups to production residues. More than 99% of the waste is recycled.

SaFetY FirStCorporate responsibility is an important aspect of sustainability. This is why we pay a lot of attention to safety. In order to work in as safe a way as possible, we have extensive procedures and clear regulations, and it is necessary for everyone to comply with these. We call each other, and also cooperation partners and visitors, to account on this matter.

In the event of an incident, the safety of those living near the site, employees and guests is our first priority. Afterwards our attention turns to the environment, and only then to the continuity of our production processes. We cooperate with the Safety Region to combat incidents as quickly and effectively as possible.

combating nuisanceProduction processes and maintenance work can cause the local residents inconvenience. DSM Delft has permits for a certain amount of noise and odor and is designated as a High Environmental Category business park. We try as far as possible to avoid and proactively counteract any nuisance. If, however, there is any inconvenience, please call the environmental complaints freephone and we will act immediately to identify the cause and take appropriate measures.

at the heart oF the coMMunitYDSM Delft is close to the center of Delft. Many people from Delft and its surrounding area have worked at DSM or the former Gist-Brocades, or are interested in what we do on the site. Each year we organize an evening for residents and anyone who is interested, when visitors are taken on a tour of the site and we explain our production processes and plans. The DSM Delft Newsletter is widely distributed twice a year.DSM and Gist-Brocades pensioners are invited each year. In collaboration with schools and universities, we hold guest lectures for students and school pupils who are interested in chemistry and biotechnology because they may well be our colleagues in the future!DSM Delft wants to be a good neighbor to the residents of Delft and Rijswijk and get involved in its social life.
