Hurling the ATOM toward peaceful uses. A life-saving breakthrough in radiation therapy,

plus production of radioisotopes which will foster a new era in diagnostic medicine, are among the brightest promises of the nuclear research capability at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility, Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Here, the nucleus of the atom can be explored with accuracy never before possible. A high intensity beam of protons, stripped from hydrogen atoms, shooting down a half-mile long linear accelerator at 84 per cent of the speed of light, slams into tiny metal targets and blasts their atoms into sub-nuclear bits of matter which can be put to work for mankind. In practical application, some of these secondary particles may be re-directed at the precise energy and penetration levels needed to destroy inoperable tumors without damaging healthy tissue.

Flow components in the facility's hydrogen injection system must be leak-proof and re l iab le . . . in both vacuum and pressure service...in the purest sense of these familiar terms. This is why the components shown at left are found at all connections and critical control points: (a) SWAGELOK Tube Fittings, (b) SWAGELOK Flexible Metal Hose, (c) NUPRO Bellows Sealed Valves (d) CAJON Metal-Glass Connections, fe) CAJON Stainless Steel Flexible Tubing.
