In het reguliere onderwijs is in het algemeen onvoldoende ruimte voor het behandelen van levensvragen, terwijl het leven zelf toch het allerbelangrijkste is in ieder levend wezen. We zien door de dagelijkse drukte in ons leven gemakkelijk over het hoofd dat onze intellectuele geschiedenis een schat aan ideeën bevat die bruikbare antwoorden op levensvragen kunnen geven.

Het Maastrichtse Studium Generale, dat bijna veertig jaar bestaat, heeft in het verleden alleen al daarom een keur aan wetenschappers, filosofen, schrijvers en kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland carte blanche gegeven op een breed toegankelijk podium. Dit seizoen, mijn laatste bij het SG, staat met de meet in zicht meer dan ooit in het teken van het behandelen van onderwerpen die ieder van ons aangaan: de ontwikkeling

in de baarmoeder, existentiële leegte, ongelukkig zijn, omgaan met verlies en verdriet, vergankelijkheid, ik en de ander, samen leven, de kosmos, buitenaards leven, moraal, depressiviteit, levenskunst, waanzin, de eindigheid van het leven, onsterfelijkheid.

Tien jaar geleden werd in London The School of Life opgericht door de Britse filosoof en schrijver Alain de Botton. Ik ben haast geneigd het Maastrichtse Studium Generale te kronen met de titel: The University of Life, ware het niet dat de enige echte University of Life het leven zelf is. Let’s celebrate it!

In regular education, there is generally insufficient scope for dealing with the big issues of life, while life itself is surely the most important thing in everyone’s existence. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that our intellectual history comprises a wealth of ideas that can give useful answers to existential questions. If only for this reason, the Maastricht Studium Generale can look back on almost forty years of giving carte blanche on a widely accessible platform to a variety of scientists, philosophers, writers and artists from the Netherlands and abroad. With the starting line in sight, this season – my last with SG – focuses more than ever before on dealing with subjects that concern us all: development in the womb,

existential emptiness, being unhappy, dealing with loss and grief, mortality, the self and the other, living together, the cosmos, extraterrestrial life, morality, depression, the art of living, insanity, the finiteness of life and immortality.

Ten years ago, the British philosopher and writer Alain de Botton founded The School of Life, in London. I am almost tempted to honour the Maastricht Studium Generale with the title The University of Life, were it not that the only true University of Life is life itself. So let’s celebrate it!

De relatie tussen voeding en gezondheid is evident en met een goed samengesteld dieet valt veel gezondheidswinst te beha-len, maar een uitgebalanceerde voeding is vaak een probleem. Veel informatie is ook tegenstrijdig. Dieetgoeroes varen er wel bij en de een na de ander vertelt ons wat nu weer het beste is om gezond en fit te blijven, en vooral ook slank. Maar ook de wetenschap staat niet stil. Er wordt steeds meer onderzoek gedaan naar de relatie

tussen bepaalde voedingsstoffen en be-paalde ziektes en vele gezondheidsclaims worden onder de loep gelegd. In deze reeks kijken we naar een aantal van die claims en gaan we dieper in op de invloed van voeding op bijvoorbeeld stress, ziektes en gezondheid.

In reaction to scandals about fake news, digital services have been developed, such as “Full Fact” which flags up dubious content online. Such initiatives suggest that the problem with the internet is the content. In this lecture, however, Noortje Marres will argue that the design principles be-hind social media also play a role. Plat-forms like Twitter rely on social algorithms to select sources for disclosure, rewarding content that is widely shared with visibi-lity. However, such algorithms suffer from a blind spot. They may be social, but they are not sociological: they do not sufficient-ly appreciate the political effects that arise from interactions between media, techno-logy and people.

To mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution, this illustrated lecture by Orlando Figes will look back on the ways in which the commemoration of the Revolution developed in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1991. It will explore the role of propaganda myths in Russia's histo-rical memory and discuss what use can be made by Russia today of its revolutionary past. Orlando Figes is a British historian and writer known for his works on Russian history. He has written eight books, which have been translated into 28 languages.

Philosophy is often called the mother of all sciences. Disciplines like physics and psychology originated from philosophy. For a long time, philosophers were the only scientists trying to understand reality, whether physical or social. But philosophy is more than that, as it explores important issues that go beyond scientific research, actively engaging with the most important issues of our lives. What does it all mean? Can we decipher what is good and evil? Does it make sense to distinguish between mind and body? What does a social and international order look like in which basic freedoms can be fully realised? Is art important to our happiness? These ques-tions correspond to five interrelated sub-disciplines of philosophy: philosophy of language, ethics, philosophy of the mind,

political philosophy and philosophy of art. This series addresses these disciplines. It aims for an appreciation of Western philosophy through an exploration of its history, the main issues and the major philosophers. The series is a general introduction, showing that the mother of all sciences can be fascinating, interesting and broad-minded.

Verdriet en verlies staan steeds om de hoek in ieders leven. Iedereen weet dat verlies tot het leven behoort en toch bereiden weinig mensen zich hierop voor. Zowel de rouwenden als de omgeving stellen zich allerlei vragen: ‘Is het normaal dat je je na maanden nog zo verdrietig voelt? Kun je nog ooit opnieuw genieten van het leven? Rouwen mannen anders dan vrouwen? Hoe kun je kinderen opvangen in verdriet of kun je hen beschermen tegen verdriet? Is het wel goed dat ze zoveel over haar overleden man praat? Zullen mensen er niet sneller overheen zijn als we hen helpen er niet meer aan te denken? Kunnen mensen na een echtscheiding of andere belangrijke verliezen een gelijkaardig rouwproces doormaken?’ Op al deze vragen geeft Keirse een antwoord. Meer weten kan je helpen

om als werkgever, vriend, buur, docent of familielid mensen met verdriet te onder-steunen. Mensen die zelf een belangrijk verlies te verwerken hebben, kunnen vanuit inzicht tot vernieuwd uitzicht komen. Je leert hoe je een meer zorgende omgeving kunt creëren. Keirse luisterde meer dan 40 jaar naar mensen met verdriet en reikt suggesties aan die helpen om verdriet te overleven en om mensen met verdriet beter te begrijpen en te helpen. Het gaat niet over de dood maar over het leven.

Indiase visies op vergankelijkheid, aftake-ling en dood – gericht op serene aanvaar-ding – zijn bij ons vrij goed bekend. We weten echter minder af van duizendjarige Chinese ideeën en praktijken ter zake. Gelaten aanvaarding is er niet aan de orde: het geschrevene genereert levenskrachtige energieën die ’s mensen sterfelijkheid zo lang mogelijk buiten de deur houden. De kernboodschap van het Chinese denken ligt in zijn uiteindelijke overbodigheid. In het niet-denken ontvouwt zich een stille, transformationele voortgang die de oer-wanorde van lichaam, bewustzijn en maatschappij geleidelijk moet omvormen tot een spontane orde van adamanten on-verzettelijkheid. Wij westerlingen kunnen onvergankelijke oneindigheid nauwelijks bevatten. We bannen liever onze wezenlij-ke eindigheid uit, ten einde jachtig te leven in de illusie van dagelijkse onsterfelijkheid

Recent work has shown that general intel-ligence is not limited to humans, but also found in many animals. Between-species variation in general intelligence is closely linked to brain size. Brains have two pecu-liarities that affect the evolution of intel-ligence. Firstly, they are energetically expensive, so the ecological ability to sustain larger brains constrained the evolution of intelligence. Secondly, brains must be trained before they are useful. Therefore, species that can rely during development on social inputs that make skill-learning more efficient are more likely to evolve larger brains. These two princi-ples also apply to human evolution.

The past sixteen years have seen western interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya lead to endless war while non-intervention in Syria has seen hundreds of thousands killed and millions flee in the world's greatest humanitarian crisis. The refugee crisis in Europe has brought these wars to our shores.

In the Tans Lecture 2017 Christina Lamb will talk about covering these issues as a female war correspondent, finding inspi-rational people like Malala and Nujeen, who crossed from Aleppo to Cologne in a wheelchair, and why Christina Lamb belie-ves it matters to tell these stories.

Christina Lamb is one of Britain’s leading foreign correspondents and a bestselling author. She has reported from most of the world’s hotspots starting with Afghanistan after an unexpected wedding invitation led her to Karachi in 1987 when she was just 22. She moved to Peshawar to cover the mujaheddin fighting the Soviet Union and within two years she had been named Young Journalist of the Year. Since then she has won 14 major awards including five times being named Foreign Correspondent

of the Year and Europe’s top war reporting prize, the Prix Bayeux. She was made an OBE (Order of the British Empire) by the Queen in 2013 and is an honorary fellow of University College, Oxford.

Currently Chief Foreign Affairs Corres-pondent for the Sunday Times as well as a Global Fellow for the Wilson Centre for International Affairs in Washington DC, Christina has been based in Islamabad and Rio de Janeiro for the Financial Times and Johannesburg and Washington for the Sunday Times. She is on the boards of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) and Afghan Connection.

She has written eight books including the bestselling I Am Malala with Malala Yousafzai, named Nonfiction Book of the Year in the British Book Awards; The Af-rica House; Small Wars Permitting and Farewell Kabul: From Afghanistan to a More Dangerous World. Her latest book is Nujeen: One Girl's Incredible Journey from War-torn Syria in a Wheelchair co-written with Nujeen Mustafa.

Strengthening Biomedical Discovery Science

The world is awash with massive amounts of data, but data scientists are stymied in their ability to efficiently find and reuse this digital gold. In this talk, Professor Dumontier will discuss his efforts to de-velop computational frameworks that wrangle knowledge into simple, but effec-tive representations that are FAIR - Find-able, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-useable - and how we use other people's data to reproduce studies, validate salient findings, and make new discoveries.

Benefit of Nano Biology for Medicine

Prof. Peter PetersProfessor of Nano Biology, UM

In this lecture co-director of the Maas-tricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging Insti-tute M4I, Peter Peters, will show how the Division of Nanoscopy investigates cell structures at macromolecular level. Inside cells, proteins work together in complex structures and are responsible for virtually all processes in the human body, including diseases such as cancer. To understand the working mechanisms of protein com-plexes, three-dimensional imaging of normal and disease-causing protein com-plexes is essential. Peters will show how this could ultimately lead to more effective treatments.

Addiction expert Lewis relates his own past experiences and those of others who have lived through addiction with neu-ropsychological theory and data. He ar-gues against the prevalent view that ad-diction is a chronic brain disease. He reasons that addiction emerges from cycles of desire, satisfaction, and loss that reinforce synaptic patterns and corre-sponding psychological habits. 100 jaar Russische OktoberrevolutieDr. Peter van NunenRuslandkundige, Maastricht

In november 1917 greep te midden van de puinhopen van het tsaristische Rusland, een revolutionaire socialistische partij in Petrograd de macht. De nieuwe macht-hebbers waren jonge idealisten na de oorlog de “Unie van de Socialistische Sovjetrepublieken” konden uitroepen. Pas toen konden zij beginnen met de opbouw van een welvarender maatschappij met meer individuele vrijheid en grotere soci-ale gelijkheid. De praktijk bleek weerbar-stiger. Het experiment ontspoorde en de Sovjetunie werd een afschrikwekkende totalitaire dictatuur, die miljoenen slacht-offers vergde, het land economisch ruï-neerde, geen vrijheid toestond en geen gelijkheid tot stand bracht. In december 1991 hief de Sovjetunie zichzelf op. Hoe belangrijk was die gebeurtenis van 100 jaar geleden voor de Europese geschiede-nis en welke invloed heeft die vandaag de dag nog op onze tijd?

Alles vergaat. Wat geweest is, is voorbij en verdwijnt in de vergeetput van het verle-den. Dat is de indruk waaraan niemand ontkomt, maar is het ook werkelijk zo? Wie begrijpt wat tijd is? Door de herinnering kunnen we iets uit het verleden ophalen en weer naar het heden brengen, en door anticipatie iets van de toekomst nu al te voorschijn halen. Alleen wat nù bestaat, bestaat. Of niet? Volgens de oude Parme-nides kan niets dat bestaat ooit verdwij-nen, en vijfentwintig eeuwen later was Einstein het met hem eens. Oude natuurfi-losofie en moderne natuurkunde bevesti-gen elkaar. Uit Einsteins relativiteitstheorie volgt dat verleden, heden en toekomst relatief zijn. Wat in het verleden ligt, of nog in de toekomst, bestaat even reëel als wat nu bestaat; het bevindt zich alleen maar buiten het nu-moment van de waar-nemer. Niets verdwijnt uit het grote geheel dat het universum is. Al het vergankelijke bestaat in eeuwigheid.

De mens is de slimste diersoort die ooit op aarde heeft geleefd. Maar hoe meer we leren over onszelf, hoe minder we begrij-pen. Draulans gaat vanavond op zoek naar de oorzaken en patronen van het menselijk gedrag. Zijn we veroordeeld om door het leven te gaan als botte egoïsten? Of moe-ten we ons meer bewust zijn van onze drang om toch te zorgen voor elkaar? En hoe komt het toch dat we elkaars gedrag zo slecht kunnen inschatten? 10.000 jaar geleden waren er 6 miljoen mensen, van-daag 7 miljard. 10.000 jaar geleden was de wereld onoverzichtelijk groot, vandaag brengt Facebook ons in real time in con-tact met mensen op alle continenten. We hebben ons met succes aangepast aan de groeiende complexiteit van ons sociale leven. Draulans beschrijft hoe dat in zijn werk is gegaan en komt tot verrassende conclusies.

In deze reeks van de gezondheidsuniversi-teit wordt gekeken naar hoe we groeien en aftakelen en hoe onze gezondheid zich ge-durende ons leven ontwikkelt. Hoe vinden verouderingsprocessen plaats en kunnen we daar al dan niet op ingrijpen?

De Gezondheidsuniversiteit van het Maas-tricht UMC+ is een initiatief van studenten die hun kennis en vaardigheden graag wil-len delen met geïnteresseerden. SG onder-steunt dit initiatief van harte en heeft het

daarom opgenomen in het programma van de collegereeksen. Elke avond begint met een college van een expert. Daarna volgt een informatiemarkt en wordt een casus voorgelegd, die in een miniworkshop met collega-studenten wordt aangepakt. Er is geen specifieke vooropleiding vereist. Kerstmis is van oudsher bij uitstek een familiefeest: ruim 75% van de Nederlanders viert het met de familie. Het is echter niet alleen maar een feest. Aan het eind van het jaar wordt de balans opgemaakt, van vreug-de maar ook van verdriet en rouw: De eerste kerst na een overlijden of na een echtschei-ding. Vaak ontstaan er ruzies die soms jaren doorwerken. Het vertrouwen in familiever-banden neemt dan af en er kunnen klachten over depressiviteit ontstaan. Er worden rekeningen opgemaakt en juist dan gepre-senteerd. Oud zeer en familiegeheimen blijken immers op de achtergrond aanwezig te zijn. De plaats in de familie zoals zonde-bok en zondagskind wordt weer actueel. Rituelen worden blind opgevolgd of her-nieuwd. Er zijn natuurlijk ook kansen voor verbondenheid. Van den Eeerenbeemt belicht de onderliggende dynamiek van de kracht en de kwetsbaarheid van families zoals deze cumuleren tijdens de kerstdagen.

Human rights are universal. Yet at the same time, there are enormous differen-ces among human beings. Today, in coun-tries such as the Netherlands, some of these differences are at the centre of many debates relating to human rights. This lecture will explore what it means to realize universal human rights in contexts of human diversity. How can we deal with diverging interpretations of human rights between majority and minority cultu-res?  How should we address situations of conflicting rights? Where should we draw the line between respect for minority cultures and the need for cultural change in the name of human rights?
