Het afgelopen najaar was essayist Bas Heijne te gast bij het Studium Generale. Over het niveau van debatteren over immigratie en integratie in ons landzei hij het volgende: Als je opgesloten raakt in je eigen belevingswereld en niet langer erkent dat er een wereld buiten jouw hoofd bestaat waar je rekening met anderen moet houden, dan ben je al snel permanent woedend. […] Je wilt niets leren, geen argumenten uitwisselen, alleen maar je eigen gelijk bevestigd zien. Er is helemaal geen integratiedebat, alleen maar een markering van je emotie en een natte dweil in het gezicht van je tegenstander.

Ik ben blij dat ik bij elke lezing van het SG mensen tegenkom die elke dag willen leren, naar elkaars argumenten luisteren en hun gelijk ter discussie stellen. In de recente Pietje Bell-lezing verklaarde kunstenares Tinekebell dat ze graag om de provincie Limburg een muur wilde laten optrekken. Hierdoor zou onze provincie aan het zicht van de rest van Nederland worden onttrokken. Wij van onze kant zullen echter de wereld buiten ons blijven aanschouwen, mede dankzij al die reuzen uit ons programma op wier schouders wij geregeld mogen staan om over onze muren heen te kijken.

Snellere computers. Slimme medicijnen. Een trui van waterafstotend materiaal. De nanotechnologie belooft veel. De uitdaging zit erin dat ze verschillende disciplines bij elkaar brengt. Ze gebruikt nieuwe effecten die op atomaire schaal kunnen worden opgeroepen. Dat biedt ongekende mogelijkheden voor het ontwikkelen van nieuwe materialen. Denk aan medische meetinstrument-jes die in een druppel bloed van alles kunnen meten, een “lab op een chip”, en slimme nanodeeltjes, die in je lichaam naar tumoren op zoek gaan. Nanotechnologie zal unieke nieuwe applicaties opleveren en ons leven veranderen. Hoe, dat probeert Blank duidelijk te maken in deze lezing.

Aan de hand van filosofen en schrijvers als Plato, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Stendhal, Saul Bellow en Amos Oz laat Jan Drost zien hoe allerlei ideeën over liefde en romantiek in ons hoofd terechtkomen en daar doorwerken, zowel ten goede als ten kwade. Seks, jaloezie, vreemdgaan, trouw, romantische idealen - het komt allemaal aan de orde. Drost is ervan overtuigd dat onze manier van denken ons voelen en handelen beïnvloedt en dat anders denken tot anders handelen kan leiden. Denken kan ons vermogen tot liefhebben een goede dienst bewijzen, bijvoorbeeld door het ontmaskeren van romantische idealen die onze liefde in de weg staan. Veel liefde gaat verloren aan romantiek en misverstand, en wij kunnen zoveel beter.

Vrijwel iedereen denkt in staat te zijn tot kritisch denken. Toch wijzen de feiten uit dat het veel lastiger is dan het lijkt. Zeer veel mensen hangen totaal ongeloofwaardige opvattingen aan. Vaak denken die mensen dat zij meer kritisch zijn dan anderen. In deze voordracht bespreekt Braeckman de mogelijke verklaringen voor de menselijke kwetsbaarheid voor onwaarschijnlijke opvattingen. Diverse wetenschappelijke disciplines tonen aan dat we niet te snel onze waarneming, ons geheugen en ons redenerend vermogen mogen vertrouwen. Braeckman il-lustreert dit met voorbeelden en geeft aan hoe we op een evenwichtige manier tot kritisch denken kunnen komen.

Mannen en vrouwen hebben een zeer lange evolutie doorgemaakt om, althans in de westerse cultuur, tot een redelijke gelijkwaardigheid van de seksen te komen waar-binnen een liefdesrelatie tot ontwikkeling kan komen. Om echter al te vaak voorkomende ontgoochelingen te voorkomen is het belangrijk om te beseffen dat menselijke liefde beperkt is in intensiteit en in tijd en dat de liefde van mannen en vrouwen verschillend is. Binnen de liefdes-relatie krijgt ook de seksualiteit een andere dimensie, ze wordt een sacrale beleving in de fysieke en emotionele versmelting die de instinctieve seksualiteit van de prima-ten overstijgt. Evolutionair gezien is liefde een recente eigenschap van het menselijk brein en daarmee ook het object van de hersenwetenschap geworden. Liefde is daardoor weliswaar een feit aan het worden, maar het mysterie ervan blijft en dat moeten we koesteren.

Eeuwenlang zag Europa zichzelf als het hoogtepunt van beschaving. Maar kunnen de westerse idealen vandaag nog steeds overtuigen? Op zoek naar een antwoord maakte Jan Leyers een lange reis van het land waar het menselijke avontuur begon, Ethiopië, naar waar hij woont, Europa. Over deze weg naar het Avondland vertelt Jan Leyers: een tocht door woestijnen en miljoenensteden, door arme en rijke landen, door democratieën en dictaturen. Hoe kijken de mensen langs de route naar hun verre neven uit het westen? Waar benijden ze het westen om en welke westerse verworvenheden verafschuwen ze? Tegelijk gaat Leyers op zoek naar wat wij zelf zijn kwijtgespeeld op onze lange weg naar het Avondland.

We reageren op stress door in de hypothalamus zenuw-cellen te activeren, die een stof (CRH) naar de hypofyse sturen, welke op haar beurt de bijnier stimuleert tot het afgeven van het stresshormoon cortisol. CRH en cortisol zorgen ervoor dat ons lichaam en de hersenen de stressvolle situatie kunnen doorstaan. Bij depressie is er een ontwikkelingsstoornis van de hypothalamus. Als de stress-as door de genetische achtergrond van een persoon en zijn ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis in een hogere versnelling staat, dan reageert hij veel te sterk op een stressvolle gebeurtenis. Dit kan resulteren in een depressie. Er zijn verschillende soorten depressie, zoals de bipolaire en de unipolaire depressie. De verschillende hersensystemen die betrokken zijn bij een depressie en de therapeutische consequenties daarvan bespreekt Swaab vanavond.

In de criminologie wordt traditioneel een onderscheid gemaakt tussen financieel-economische misdaad (White Collar Crime) en georganiseerde misdaad (Maffia). Waarom is dit onderscheid niet zo helder en bruikbaar als het lijkt en waarom lopen de twee categorieën misdaad meer en meer in elkaar over? Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de controle van de Italiaanse maffia op de legale econo-mie in Zuid-Italië, de kartels in de Europese Unie en de grootschalige fraudes in vastgoed. Welke consequenties moeten deze ontwikkelingen in de zware misdaad hebben voor het beleid in Nederland en de Europese Unie?

De moord op zes miljoen joden door nazi-Duitsland geldt als één van de zwartste bladzijden uit de geschiedenis van Europa en van de wereld. Tevens is het een soort referentiepunt: wat kan in gruwelijkheid de gaskamers en crematoria van Auschwitz nog overtreffen? Een terugblik levert drie vragen op. Hoe kan men naar de Holocaust kijken? Hoe leefde de Holocaust na de oorlog in de herinnering voort? En vooral: kan men in feite wel lessen trekken uit het verleden?

Na afloop van de lezing brengt de cellist Mirel Lancovici Slawa Ulanowski Erinnerungen; in memoriam holocaust victims (cello solo) ten gehore.

Sinds 1998 herdenkt men in Duitsland jaarlijks op 27 januari de Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus. Vanaf 2006 wordt op initiatief van Kofi Annan, de toenmalige secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, de bevrijdingsdatum van het concentratiekamp Auschwitz wereldwijd herdacht.

Marathonvoorstelling van dit documentaire-meesterwerk over de holocaust. Regisseur Claude Lanzmann spendeerde elf jaar aan dit project. Hij reisde over de hele wereld op zoek naar overlevenden van de kampen, ooggetuigen en oorlogsmisdadigers. Zonder veel franje, louter met gebruik van getuigenissen geeft Shoah een gedetailleerd beeld van de wijze waarop de nazi’s de Endlösung der Judenfrage stap-voor-stap uitvoerden: de details van dienstregelingen en financiën, de logistiek van de gaskamers en de bureaucratische procedures om het doden van miljoenen mensen te registreren zonder het vermelden van de woorden “doden” of “mensen”. Shoah is een confronterend meesterwerk, maar door Lanzmanns manier van werken geen morbide of ontmoedigende ervaring.

Met de woorden traditie en vernieuwing kenschetste prof. dr. L. M. de Rijk - terecht - de filosofie in de histori-sche periode van de Middeleeuwen. Enerzijds wordt daar voortgebouwd op de Antieke wijsbegeerte, zowel rechtstreeks uit het Grieks als ook via het Arabisch overge-leverd en vertaald, anderzijds worden er nieuwe wegen ingeslagen, waarbij de geloofsgegevens een - meestal stimulerende - extra kennisbron vormen. Hierdoor laat de periode van de Middeleeuwse wijsbegeerte een fascinerende, bonte verzameling zien van pogingen de wereld en de mens beter te begrijpen.

Tijd is het verschijnsel waardoor alles wat bestaat, onophoudelijk in een verleden duikt waaruit het nooit terugkeert. Hoe komt dat? Waarom kan de tijd niet omkeren? Of stilstaan? En verdwijnen de dingen wel die in het verleden schuiven, of liggen ze alleen maar buiten het bereik van de waarnemer die nog in het heden bestaat? In deze collegereeks behandelen we enkele fundamentele filosofische en wetenschappelijke problemen betreffende het verschijnsel tijd. Meer bepaald komt de vraag aan bod of de tijd een intrinsieke eigenschap van de fysische werkelijkheid is, ofwel een manier waarop de waarnemer deze werkelijkheid ervaart. Zoals blijkt, werpt de relativiteitstheorie een bijzonder licht op deze kwestie en op het verband tussen een in de tijd verlopend en een tijdloos bestaan.

Last fall, essayist Bas Heijne was our guest at Studium Generale. He stated the following about the level of debate on immigration and integration in our country:

If you are trapped in your own imagination and you no longer recognize that there is a world besides yourself to take into account, you will be permanently furious.[…] You do not want to learn, or share arguments, you only want to be confirmed in your own right. There is no integration debate at all, just emotion on your face and a splash of cold water against the face of your opponent.

I am glad that at every reading of SG I meet people who want to learn every day, who are willing and eager to listen to each other’s arguments and are ready to put them up for discussion. During the recent Pietje Bell lecture, artist Tinekebell stated her desire to build a wall around the Province of Limburg. This way our province would be out of sight from the rest of The Netherlands. As far as we are concerned, we will remain connected to the outside world thanks to all those giants in our program on whose shoulders we can stand in order to look beyond our walls.

Corruption is unknown, unloved, and omnipresent. Financial figures show that corruption is more prevalent in rich countries than in poor. Most corruption is invisible as it is not money that flows through accounts. It is trading in power and influence that leaves no paper trail. Costs to the world economy are enormous, macro-economic costs overshadow the micro-profits of some individuals. Van Hulten will go into questions as: How deep is corruption rooted in society? What are the misconceptions about it? Do we really want to eradicate corruption, fraud and the like or can society actually not exist without it?

Most people think they know how to think. Most of us believe we have good reasons and arguments, and we tend to be skeptical about belief systems that are strange from our perspective. In other words, we think that we are able to think critically. Research shows, however, that clear and critical thinking is much harder than we presume. All of us are vul-nerable for mental infection with bad, pseudoscientific and superstitious ideas. In this lecture we discuss the psychology behind all this. We give many examples to prove the point that our brain can easily be fooled (or rather: fool itself), and we offer ways to enhance our critical thinking skills.

Die Liebe erscheint in moderner Zeit schwierig wie nie. Viele wollen sie nicht mehr nach Vorgaben der Religion und Konvention leben, also müssen sämtliche Fragen des gemeinsamen Lebens erst “ausdiskutiert” werden. Manche sprechen schon vom “Ende der Liebe”, Andere wollen eine neue “Nüchternheit”. Es ist ja wahr: Die Liebe ist kompliziert geworden, aber ist das etwa ein Grund, es nicht dennoch zu versuchen? Die Liebe bietet was Menschen heute zunehmend entbehren: Sinn. Sollte sie am Ende sein, ist es Zeit für eine Renaissance der Liebe. Sinnvoll erscheint, ihre Romantik zu retten, sie mit einer neuen Lebbarkeit auszustatten und sie neu zu erfinden: Als atmende Liebe, die zwischen Romantik und Pragmatik hin- und hergehen kann.

In March 2012 the Russians will choose a new president. Or rather, they may agree to a choice that the Kremlin has already made for them: Vladimir Putin. So why are elections then still held in an authoritarian country like Russia? Why do the rulers put so much effort in putting up a show, to make believe Russia is a democracy? And why is there so little resistance from the Russian people against their rulers? Shortly, how stable really is the political order in Russia?

We are in the midst of a crisis which is calling into question the future of our capitalist system. Capitalism is a system where resources are most often lacking where they are required for either production or consumption. These resour-ces need therefore to be borrowed, and the loan rewarded through the payment of interest. The mechanism of interest makes capital “grow” which leads to an inescapable concen-tration of wealth. So far, capitalism has survived the crises which regularly arise from these wealth concentrations. But is it possible that the current crisis is one too many? Capi-talism does not live in isolation: it is combined within our current economic and political system. The twentieth century was one of the most significant and exciting periods ever witnessed in philosophy, characterised by intellectual change in a challenging context. These lectures present a colourful picture of the intellectual heroes and key themes of twentieth century philosophy. The central ideas of six philosophers will be introduced. Although it is impossible to focus on every philosophical detail, the lectures cover the main move-ments of philosophy over the last hundred years. These movements will be woven together with a narrative history that accounts for the influences of art, science and politics. The lectures prove that the world’s oldest intellectual stone will keep on rolling.

In series of five or six lectures, various topics that contribute to the academic education of Maastricht University students will be addressed. The first feature-length documentary about the Tunesian revolution, No More Fear was selected for a special screening at Cannes last year. The film brings together news footage of the demonstrations with a variety of players in the revolution, providing a diverse picture of the groundswell that rose up to topple the dictatorial regime. While filmmaker Ben Cheikh focuses largely on the educated middle class, interviews with people on the street make clear the cross-class alliances that brought down authoritarian President Ben Ali after 23 increasingly repressive years.

In this series of five lectures we will explore popular film as an art form by analyzing it through the literary, dramatic, and cinematic gazes. In november vond het prestigieuze International Docu-mentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) plaats, waar ruim driehonderd documentaires werden vertoond. Aanvang en einde van de activiteiten De lezingen beginnen om 20.00 uur. Rond 21.00 uur is er een korte pauze. De avonden worden afgesloten om uiterlijk 22.15 uur. Voor de overige activiteiten gelden vaak afwijkende tijden.

Toegang Tenzij anders staat aangegeven zijn de activiteiten gratis toegankelijk.

Reserveren en kaartverkoopVoor SG Podium activiteiten zijn kaarten aan de zaal verkrijgbaar. Verkoop start 45 minuten voor aanvang. Reserveren is niet mogelijk. Soms wordt er gewerkt met reserveringen: dan reserveren via het Studenten Service Centrum (043) 388 5 388 of via www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/studiumgenerale. Lezingen: voor sommige lezingen vragen wij een bijdrage. Soms is het nodig hiervoor te reserveren, of er zijn kaarten bij aanvang aan de zaal te verkrijgen. Vol We moeten ons houden aan de brandweervoorschriften en kunnen niet meer mensen in de zaal toelaten dan is toegestaan.

Roken In de gebouwen van de Universiteit Maastricht mag niet worden gerookt.

Garderobe De garderobes op de UM zijn niet bewaakt. Het SG is niet verantwoor-delijk voor diefstal of beschadiging van jassen, tassen en paraplu’s.

GSM’s GSM-toestellen dienen uitgeschakeld te worden vóór aanvang van de activiteiten.

Parkeren Behalve op donderdag is parkeren in de buurt na 18.00 uur gratis. Tijdens de activiteiten in de Tongersestraat 53 en de Minderbroedersberg 4-6 kan gratis
