QUOTE OF THE

DAYthe rapid rise of Patanjali AyurvedIn the case of Patanjali Ayurved, a home-grown firm with interests in businesses such as food, consumer packaged goods and healthcare. IIFL Institutional Eq-uities, for instance, in a recent report termed Patanjali a credible threat for consumer goods firms—not try-ing to beat others at their game but changing the game for them. It expects the company to clock revenues of Rs.20,000 crore by fiscal year 2020. Patanjali is estimated to have more than doubled its sales to about Rs.5,000 crore in the current fiscal year. These are big numbers and the firm’s growth trajectory is reported to be spreading nervousness in some boardrooms as well. It is also one of the biggest advertisers on Indi-an television. Patanjali Ayurved started in 2007 and has benefited from close association with well known yoga guru Baba Ramdev. The company is different from a typical business and the stated philosophy is to plough back profits into the company or to be used for social causes. The idea is to be present in as many cat-egories as possible in order to give consumers more choices, and profits are to be reinvested in innovation and capacity expansion so pricing can be made more competitive. The firm, in fact, has priced its product at a significant discount to others in a number of cat-egories, which is helping drive sales. Patanjali is also said to be benefiting from a shift in consumer prefer-ences towards herbal and ayurvedic products which are considered to be closer to nature. It has also posi-tioned itself as a swadeshi brand, which has an appeal among a category of consumers. However, the critical question now is, what does the rapid rise of Patanjali mean for other businesses in categories where it has a marked presence or plans to enter? To be sure, the rise of Patanjali has increased competition for incum-bents in a number of product categories. But the effect of competition is likely to be different for different companies. While the impact is likely to be more pro-found on smaller businesses with a limited product portfolio, the effect on established companies with leadership positions and strong balance sheets is like-ly to be limited for a number of reasons. For instance, Patanjali is currently focusing on adding more cate-gories and products, which will give time to compa-nies with scale and depth to adjust if required. Firms with leadership positions in respective categories are there for good reasons and not necessarily because of lack of competition—they can always adjust their product portfolios if consumer preferences actually begin to shift. There are also potential difficulties that Patanjali could face as a business. For instance, it has ventured into too many products and categories and all may not do well. It is not clear what the company will do in that case.

SPORTS ROUNDUPDollar bulls retreat as Yellen stresses need for caution

Modi govt cuts e-commerce price advantage to save retail

Pvt investment, rural consumption must for India’s growth: ABD

Agency | New Delhi

At first sight, it seemed like a simple three-page document that arrived by post. A closer look, however, showed how it was capable of having a far-reaching effect on the country’s retail sector and e-commerce marketplace. The press note titled Guidelines for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on e-commerce, issued by the Department of Indus-trial Policy and Promotion on Tuesday evening, made a policy-level attempt to rein in the Indian e-commerce business by creating a ‘level-playing field’ in the overall Indian retail market. The stated intention of the note was to clarify that the gov-ernment allows 100% FDI in business-to-business e-commerce companies but not in business-to-con-sumer ones. This also means that the said automat-ic approval applies only to companies that do not hold any stock, but act as a marketplace where

vendors can sell their products and services.

Dollar bulls were on the defensive on Wednesday after Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen’s cautious tone left markets wondering if there will be even one hike to US interest rates this year. In a speech to the Economic Club of New York, Yellen stressed the need to be cautious in raising rates and high-lighted external risks, including low oil prices and slower growth abroad. Her stance was in contrast to some of her colleagues who last week suggested another tightening may be around the corner. “The communication from global central banks at the moment is causing a bit of consternation for mar-kets in terms of consistent policy signals, or lack thereof,” said Sue Trinh, senior currency strategist at RBC Capital Markets in Hong Kong. “But Yel-len has spoken, and that’s seen a reversal for the

A revival of private investment and rural consump-tion is critical for India if growth is to remain strong in 2016-17 and the following year, Asian Develop-ment Bank (ADB) said Wednesday. Unveiling the economic prospects for India in its Asian Devel-opment Outlook (ADO) 2016, ADB said: “While, public investment and urban consumption were the major drivers for growth last fiscal, a revival of private investment and rural consumption is crit-ical if growth is to remain strong in 2016-17 and 2017-18, given the likely sluggish recovery in the advanced economies and the anemic outlook for global trade.” ADB said India’s economic growth is expected to decline to 7.4 percent in the 2016-17 fiscal, from 7.6 percent in the current financial year ending tomorrow, due to weak global demand and falling exports. India’s urban consumption may be boosted due to impending salary hike for government employees, however, revival of rural consumption hinges on the quality of the monsoon because a major part of the rural economy contin-ues to depend heavily on agriculture.

West Indies captain Dar-ren Sammy on Wednes-day insisted that his side would be no pushover in the World Twenty20 semifinal clash against India on Thursday even though it seems like a “David vs Goliath con-test”.“I think it is 80-20 to India, so it feels like David vs Goliath contest but people tend to forget David won the fight, so it’s something similar to that,” said Sammy on the eve of the clash in Mum-

bai. “We haven’t played the perfect game yet. We are stressing on rotation of strike. It is clear that we are a big boundary -hitting team. We look at the dot-ball percent-age, probably it is 40-50 per cent for us, and we could improve on that. So far, we have bowled really well in the tourna-ment and on a few occa-sions, one batsman has taken responsibility,” he said. Sammy said he has a feeling that it is going to be West Indies’ year.

“It (tournament) means a lot. No team has won the event twice. Later today, we will know if New Zealand or England wins, if we will have a possibility of that. Our game tomorrow creates that opportunity as well. For me, I have always enjoyed playing for the West Indies. “I think this year could be the year for the West Indies. The Under-19 team started it in Bangladesh (by win-ning the U19 World Cup) and both the men and the women’s teams took that as inspiration. “Come tomorrow, we have two West Indian teams (men and women) vying for a spot in the final. I really wish both teams could go to the finals and win it. So, 2016 could be the year where West Indies take home everything,” he concluded.

That really put the brakes on the scoring and allowed us to come back into the game,” Shastri said. “After the first four overs it was a no-con-test, because at one stage it looked like 200-plus which would have been very difficult to chase on that surface. So he will be missed. Unfortunate it’s an injury that happened during the game. Looking to take off, he did his an-kle in and I believe it’s a minor tear in the ankle.” Yuvraj’s injury will mean the Indian team manage-ment will have to decide on whether to draft in a specialist batsman – Pan-dey or Ajinkya Rahane – or get in a spin-bowling all-rounder, like Pawan Negi, in the eleven. Shastri said the team composition was yet to be discussed.
